  • Hublot - Maria Höfl-Riesch

Hublot has always had close links with the mountains and skiing. This is, of course, due to its origins and the fact that Swiss culture is so firmly entrenched in its values, but also due to its close links with the world of sport in general... The rapport between the skier Maria Höfl- Riesch and Hublot's management, Jean-Claude Biver and Ricardo Guadalupe, in October 2010 was immediate.

Since then, Hublot has paid homage to the brand's ambassador, who is at the peak of her sport - double Olympic Champion and Double World Champion - by creating a "Snow Leopard" Big Bang for her in snow-white ceramic, featuring a dial set with 8 diamonds and limited to 50 pieces. It was unveiled to coincide with the Baselworld trade fair during a special press conference on 26th April 2013, attended by Maria Höfl-Riesch, Jean-Claude Biver, Chairman and Ricardo Guadalupe, CEO of Hublot.
Maria Höfl-Riesch explained why she specifically chose this model: "The snow leopard is my favourite animal, as we have such similar characters. It is a solitary creature, but a fighter, and it emanates this calm strength. Sadly, they are at risk of extinction and there are now just a few remaining. I am delighted that Hublot has created a watch inspired by this animal - and the fact that it bears my name fills me with pride".

Hublot has built close links with competitive skiing. By 2011, the brand was already the "Official Timekeeper" of the Alpine World Ski Championships at Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It also supports the world's greatest cross-country skier, Switzerland's own Dario Cologna, and has also formed a partnership with Verbier SPORT+ (Ski school and TeleVerbier), the Tourist Office in Zermatt and the Courchevel Ski Schoolto encourage the passing on of expertise, thus reaffirming its b attachment to the values of sharing and respect.

  • Hublot - Magic Gold

    WORLDTEMPUS - 16 December 2011

Hublot CEO Jean-Claude Biver was at his animated best yesterday morning. He had gathered about one hundred journalists from all over the world to witness the very first clump of unscratchable gold exiting the foundry he has installed on the ground floor of the Nyon factory.
The project, which sounds like a dream come true, was begun three years ago by Biver and Professor Andreas Mortensen of the Mechanical Metallurgy Laboratory of the EPFL's (the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne) Institute of Metals to find a way to make an 18-karat gold that is harder than tempered steel.
This will henceforth be known as Magic Gold; Hublot owns the only patent on it and will be the only user of it for the time being.

    The path to unscratchable
A major drawback to wearing a gold watch is that sooner or later it will need to be polished, particularly if it was highly polished to begin with. Gold is soft and scratches appear very quickly. This is the reason that 24-karat gold has never been used for watch cases and that only recently have 18-karat cases come into use. Historically, 14-karat gold cases have been most popular; though they have a lower gold content, they scratch less easily.
Basically, what the passionate technicians have done is to combine pure liquid gold with boron carbide, a powder that is compacted and pressed to make ceramic. The porous molded ceramic allows enough space to be filled with the liquid gold to the tune of 75 percent of the emerging composite metal. It has even been certified by the Central Office for Precious Metals in Bern, allowing Hublot to stamp it with the 18-karat mark - if it could be stamped.
The Magic Gold alloy is so hard that it indeed cannot be stamped. Pure 24-karat gold is usually between 25 and 50 on the Vickers scale of hardness, while regular 18-karat gold is 350-400 Vickers on average. Stainless steel usually has a hardness of 600 Vickers, while both Magic Gold and ceramic come in at around 1000 on the Vickers scale. Diamond - the hardest substance known to man - is 10,000 Vickers hard.

    Manufacture
One of Mortensen's graduate students working on the project was a creative thinker by the name of Senad Hasanovic. This young man came to Hublot along with the advent of the foundry to oversee its operation and continue the project. Though Hublot has not yet created a Magic Gold object, the composite has passed the experimental stage and the company expects to launch the first watch case made of the substance by Baselworld 2012. "The color of it will be gold, but it will be easily distinguishable from regular gold," Biver explained. "The color is not yet finalized in its definition, but the idea is to have a special color for our new Hublot Magic Gold." He also said that the precious material will be used to make watch components as well.
Despite not having actually manufactured a case out of Magic Gold as yet, Biver also insists that Hublot will also be able to use the process to make unscratchable platinum, palladium, aluminum, copper, nickel and even silver. "It will never have a scratch or even oxidize," he promised. "And this is only the beginning."

  • Hublot - With Alinghi to defend the 33rd America's Cup!

Hublot's CEO, Jean-Claude Biver, is proud to be in Genoa today alongside Ernesto Bertarelli to announce Hublot's commitment to supporting Alinghi's extraordinary campaign in the 33rd America's Cup. A marriage of excellence, technology and passion to defend the Swiss colours together!
This is a new, prestigious partnership for the watch brand, which will today join the race campaign alongside the Swiss defender Alinghi. The Swiss yacht's bid to win the America's Cup in February 2010 against the American BMW Oracle yacht has inspired Hublot's CEO, Jean-Claude Biver. His meeting with Ernesto Bertarelli revealed the many values shared by the brand and Team Alinghi. Both are at the cutting edge of technology in terms of brand new materials and innovations, and are engaged in a constant search for excellence. Partnerships with research and development centres such as the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, or EPFL) reveal a common passion for the quality and precision characterised by "Swissness". The two owners of Alinghi and Hublot also share a vision of work as a team effort, and a respect for tradition.

Hublot has always had close links with the world of yachting - firstly through its name, which means 'porthole' in French, through its partnerships with prestigious sailing clubs such as Yacht Club Monaco and Real Club Nautico de Palma, or through sponsorship deals with numerous races and yachts. This new alliance with Alinghi seems the obvious choice for the brand. Next February it will embark on an adventure with all the energy and passion for which it is renowned, in a race taking place in the waters off Ras al-Khaimah, aboard a truly remarkable catamaran.
Jean-Claude Biver is thrilled: "We had the chance to admire the yacht as it left the yard, and when it first took to the water on Lake Geneva. It is a magnificent boat and it represents the essence of Swiss expertise, with nearly 200 Swiss companies having worked on it. The "Swiss Made" label has never been more appropriate! The Swiss people - myself included - have shown no hesitation in displaying their admiration for Team Alinghi, and I am even more proud that we are the first brand to become one of the main sponsors of this incredible adventure. I am delighted to be able to help Switzerland win the Cup once more, this time against the USA."
Hublot will produce an exclusive limited edition watch in the Alinghi colours, made from materials similar to those used in the construction of the yacht itself.
