Sotheby's sale of Important Watches in Geneva saw enamel pocket watches at the centre of fierce bidding battles. Two important collections of pocket watches both eclipsed their pre-sale high estimates, with modern watches, especially those by Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin and Rolex, also performing well. The sale attracted buyers from around the world, with some 261 clients having registered to participate - many relaying bids over the phones through Sotheby's Russian and Mandarin speaking staff. The sale realised CHF 5,110,600 / US$ 5,022,595 - well within the pre-sale estimate of CHF 4,150,000-5,706,500 / US$ $4,078,537 - 5,608,234. The sale was 80.9% sold by lot, and 84.6% sold by value. Over 62% of the lots sold achieved prices in excess of high estimate.
The top-selling lot of the evening was a Fine and Very Rare Yellow Gold Perpetual Calendar by Patek Philippe, Ref. 2499/100J, with moon-phases, dated 1948. Part of a limited series retailed by Beyer, this fine example of one of the most important perpetual calendar wristwatches ever made by Patek Philippe sold for CHF 374,500 (US$ 368,051 USD).

Commenting on the sale, Geoffroy Ader, Sotheby's European Head of Watches said: "Pure passion and unbounded enthusiasm is what we saw at work tonight. Collectors wanted the best, and they fought hard to get it. We were thrilled to see so many superb pocket watches command prices commensurate with their beauty and importance. Similarly, the Patek Philippe solar-powered desk clock with cloisonne enamel was a piece of outstanding beauty and craftsmanship - qualities which spurred potential buyers to drive the price up to more than double the top estimate."
 
Daryn Schnipper, Worldwide Head of Watches at Sotheby's, said: "If ever evidence were needed of the global nature of the watch market, it was here in Geneva tonight. As we already saw this season in our sales in Hong Kong and New York, there was a tremendous depth of bidding. The excitement in the room was tangible, with collectors from all corners of the globe competing for top quality pieces with great provenance. New buyers locked horns with long-established collectors, regularly driving prices well beyond estimate in order to secure the pieces of their choice."  
Central to the excitement this evening was the extraordinary performance of rare and important pocket watches. The sale included two particularly b groups of such watches - both of which surpassed pre-sale expectations by a wide margin:
The first collection, comprising some 43 lots from a European Estate, realised a combined total of CHF 630,500 (US$ 619,656) - almost double the pre-sale high estimate for the group (Est: CHF 248,000-342,000 / US$ 243,729-336,111). 42 of the 43 pieces offered sold, with over 95% of these realising prices in excess of their pre-sale high estimate. Bidding came predominately from the Middle East, with Asian and European buyers also securing pieces for their collections.
Many of the pieces in this collection sold for multiples of their pre-sale estimates: with both lots 49 (a fine gold and enamel half-hunting cased verge watch made for the Turkish market, circa 1820) and lot 54 (a rare gold and porcelain verge watch from Farine & Racle made circa 1770) selling for CHF 28,750 / US$ 28,255 against pre-sale estimates of CHF 8,000-12,000.
A second collection of pocket watches (lots 143-155) attracted similar excitement, with collectors battling it out to acquire some of the finest examples of their type to have appeared on the market in many years. 11 of the 12 pieces offered this evening sold, realising a combined total of CHF 465,550 / US$457,533 - well in excess of pre-sale expectations of CHF 190,000-276,000 (US$186,728-271,247).
Chief among them was lot 155, an exceptional gold enamel and pearl set watch made for the Chinese market, circa 1800, which realised CHF 206,500 /202,944 (est: CHF 60,000-80,000 / US$ 58,500-77,500).
Among the historical timepieces offered, lot 156, the "The Negus Watch" made for Ethiopian Emperor Menelik II (1844 - 1913), circa 1893 exceeded high estimate, selling for CHF 52,500 ($ 51,596).
One of the stand-out pieces in tonight's sale was a Rare and Unique Gilt-Brass Solar-Powered Patek Philippe Desk Clock with Cloisonne Enamel Scene -Ville de Geneve - by Madame Luce Chappaz, dated 1978 (lot 198). It sold for CHF 128,500 / US$ 126,287 - the second highest price ever achieved for a watch of this type at auction.
In time-honoured tradition, Patek Philippe dominated the top prices among the vintage wristwatches: lot 199, a fine and extremely rare pink gold Patek Philippe perpetual calendar wristwatch with moon phases, dated 1948, ref 1526R, made CHF 254,500 / US$ 250,188
