After the SIAR, SalonQP and Belles Montres, one of the world's biggest regional watch fairs will open its doors on 6th December. The Masters of Time exhibition in Macau, organised by DFS Group, one of the world's biggest watch retailers, attracts customers from around the world to view some 400 timepieces from 40 of the world's major watch brands. WorldTempus interviewed Christophe Chaix, Senior Vice-President of the DFS Group, about the show and the current buying trends in the industry.

As part of our Christmas gift guide, we asked the world's leading watch retailers to offer their advice on buying a watch as a Christmas present. In the first of a two-part series they share their tips on how to pick a model from among the thousands available (WorldTempus has over 10,000 watches in its watchfinder), especially if you are buying it for someone else.

The past few weeks have also seen the first SIHH previews in Geneva, with a number of brands presenting a selection of their 2015 models. We published our first previews last Friday with the new Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Ceramica (PAM580 for the Paneristi) and Cartier's new skeleton Crash model, whose movement has been sculpted to match the unusual form of the case. We will, of course, bring you more over the coming weeks.

  • Cartier - Rotonde de Cartier Earth and Moon watch

The Rotonde de Cartier Earth and Moon watch is the fruit of a technical and creative ambition that for Cartier consists of bringing together two complications in a daring display. A tourbillon has been incorporated into a moon phase complication, each depending on the other.

    An innovative blend of complications
The moon-phase mechanism of the Rotonde de Cartier Earth and Moon watch is founded on a creative and complex design that combines a tourbillon, moon phase on demand and a second time zone.

Because it appears in its original form and exists only when its user wishes it to, the moon phase on the Rotonde de Cartier Earth and Moon watch reveals a technical creativity that is doubly innovative.

By pressing the push-button situated at four o'clock on the side of the case, a panel goes down and partially obscures the Tourbillon carriage. The crescent thus formed reproduces exactly the moon's shape in the sky.

The second time zone of the Rotonde de Cartier Earth and Moon watch is indicated by a 24-hour disc that was entirely redeveloped by for the calibre 9440 MC due to the sophistication of its disc display.

Exceptional finishes in an ode to craftsmanship and creativity
Polished lapis lazuli is used for the dial and the moon panel on the Rotonde de Cartier Earth and Moon watch. The hours and the second time zone are surrounded by a polished grid in 18-carat white gold. A three-dimensional dial is one of the signature features of the Cartier Fine Watchmaking collection, alongside Roman numerals that are openworked and chamfered by the hand of a master decorator in a manner akin to a skeleton movement.

The exceptional finishes of the 9440 MC are all the more remarkable because the semi-skeletonised bridges on the back of the movement are structured in a star shape, echoing this precious timepiece's lunar and terrestrial character on the case back.

With the the Rotonde de Cartier Earth and Moon watch, the Maison Cartier has created a timepiece that displays an exceptional level of creativity and craftsmanship.

Edition limited to 50 numbered pieces.

  • FHH - Men of Passion and Talent

    WORLDTEMPUS / 15 November 2012

Two short years ago, Eugenio Zigliotto passed away. Born in 1940, he was a connoisseur of the finer things in life and a professional sports reporter. In 1986, he did something no one else had done to that moment in time: he founded a magazine dedicated solely to modern mechanical wristwatches.
As you can see from the date of the founding, Orologi da Polso was far ahead of its time, published before the mechanical renaissance was broadly underway. Zigliotto was also the first to create a group of international magazines in licensed format: forms of Orologi da Polso were published over the years in France, the U.S.A., England, Portugal, Japan, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany and China.
The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie has introduced a new award in honor of Zigliotto's memory, one destined to show respect to two personalities in the world of high watchmaking. The inaugural prizes, decided by a jury formed by the Cultural Council of the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie, were bestowed upon the recipients by Cultural Council founder Franco Cologni during an awards ceremony dinner on November 14 in Lausanne. They were received in the presence of Franca Zigliotto, Eugenio Zigliotto's widow, and Olivier Baudry of Banque Julius Bär, the award's main sponsor.

    Hommage a la Passion
Awarded to an outstanding personality who has contributed to fine watchmaking over a number of years, Jean-Claude Biver was the first recipient of Hommage a la Passion award. Rarely has any industry had the pleasure of such a communicative, controversial, passionate and talented marketer and businessman as Biver. His business acumen and sense of communication exhibited since the 1980s has been instrumental in turning the world's attention back to the ticking treasures of Switzerland. Omega, Blancpain and Hublot have not only benefited from his expertise, but absolutely flourished. Today, in this age of media and Internet, Biver continues to stand out with his colorful remarks, incredible ideas and brilliant marketing.

    Hommage au Talent

Awarded to a personality who has used his or her talent to make a significant contribution to fine watchmaking, for many the masterful Giulio Papi of Audemars Piguet Renaud et Papi was likely a natural choice. Not only has this talented and genuine man created a business indispensible to the world of fine watchmaking (among others, creating some of Audemars Piguet and Richard Mille's most complicated timepieces), but he has also patiently mentored some of the most high profile and talented watchmakers in our industry - men and women (yes, Carole Foresteri-Kasapi of Cartier counts among them) - who have gone on to their own successes.
The physical award was designed by ECAL (University of Art and Design Lausanne/Ecole Cantonale d'Art de Lausanne) in collaboration with the Baccarat fine crystal company.
