  • Longines - Stefanie Graf, Longines' golden retiree

Steffi Graf became Stefanie Graf in 1998. The nickname of a tennis prodigy is today the patronym of a 45 year-old lady who goes about her life far away from the tennis court but close to children, to whom she has dedicated her foundation. Longines supports it as part of a well-balanced sponsorship strategy.

"Tennis doesn't really interest me any more. That chapter is now closed." Stefanie Graf leaves little room for doubt when asked about her life in 2015. Visiting the Roland Garros tournament the former world number one acts as an ambassador for Longines in aid of children who have been traumatised by exile, war and violence. "Children for Tomorrow" her foundation, has been supported by Longines since 2008.

Such partnerships are not that common in the business of sport. Stefanie Graf, who earned some 22 million dollars in her career, married Andre Agassi in 2001, himself a winner of an additional 31 million. So it's by no means a question of money.

Furthermore, both spouses manage their own foundation, both have retired from their sport and therefore offer much less media exposure than the current champions. So why engage with a couple that is doubtless still glamorous but much less visible than any other ambassador who is still active in the sport?

    The key word is elegance
The official reply from Longines comes as one word: "elegance". The brand groups its ambassadors under this heading, without necessarily communicating what the objective criteria for judging such "elegance" are.

In reality, the balance among the Longines ambassadors is subtle and comprises a mixture of visible stars and lesser-known but highly active personalities, in other words a mixture of form (media exposure) and substance (work on the ground by those who have retired from their careers).

This strategy started in 2007, when Longines took over tennis from its sister brand Rado. Andre Agassi signed up with the brand in the same year and was followed by his wife the following year. High-profile actors such as Simon Baker and Kate Winslet later joined the committed duo. And the Longines sponsorship model was born.

    From Roland-Garros to Kosovo
Stefanie Graf's commitment is as deep as it is tangible. "We are based in Hamburg but we also work in Cape Town, Eritrea and Kosovo," she points out. "We work with children who are sometimes not even two years old, with the help of psychologists and translators. We have a permanent team of 20 people who have already helped some 350 children."

It's easy to imagine what a return to the world of tennis by Steffi Graf would generate in terms of enthusiasm...and visibility for Longines. But the woman concerned dismisses this out of hand: "As a player, there is no question of it, I don't play any more and in any case my body would not be able to withstand it (Editor's note: Steffi Graf had already suffered major injuries and undergone operations to her back and knees in 1997 and 1998As a coach I would be on the road for around 30 weeks of the year but today I have a husband, two children and a foundation. My life is already busy enough!" So only the legend of Steffi Graf remains, but given that she still has a loyal following of fans from 7 to 77 years old, it is still b even 15 years after her retirement.

  • Longines - Longines Positioning System

During a press conference held in the Longines Owners Pavilion at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, Australia, it was announced that the new LPS technology will be officially installed and used for the first time today at Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes Day, the second day of The Championships held in April.

Longines has an illustrious history in equestrian timekeeping dating back to 1878. The innovative new LPS incorporates a permanent or portable, easily deployable system that sets a new standard for accurate, reliable and repeatable timekeeping and tracking results that will provide huge benefit to both the horseracing industry and enthusiasts.

Mr. Juan-Carlos Capelli, Vice President and Head of International Marketing of Longines said: "For Longines, investing in technological advancements is the latest step in our long term relationship with horseracing. The Longines Positioning System delivers a number of benefits to the sport and is a game-changer for the racing industry (...). We are excited to see how the LPS technology can be utilised in the future to improve the experience for racing spectators, TV viewers and even smart phone and tablet users. There is no question that live performance data enhances viewing experience and depth of understanding."

The LPS tracking and timing provides instant data on the exact position of horses during a race, race rankings, the distance between horses and speed. It boasts accuracy down to 5 centimetres and features up to 1,000 measurements per second.

In a further major announcement, Longines confirmed that it has also become the Official Partner, Official Timekeeper and Official Watch for Rosehill Gardens, specifically for the prominent Longines Golden Slipper Carnival from 2016. • Longines - China Equine Cultural Festival

Hohhot, a north-central city, known for its nomadic history and natural scenery, experienced tremendous excitement and elegance thanks to eight flat races on Saturday and to the presence of Aaron Kwok, Longines Ambassador of Elegance.  On Saturday, Longines was also the Title Partner of the Longines Mile race that saw the victory of Danny Beasley on Nassau.
The running of the first internationally endorsed thoroughbred race represents the first step towards a renaissance of flat races in Mainland China. • Longines - The Asthmometer-Pulsometer Chronograph

The Longines Asthmometer-Pulsometer Chronograph demonstrates the fact that the precision of a chronograph is necessary not only in sport. This new instrument is based on a model brought out in 1963 which was intended essentially for medical use. The new product not only shows the time but also measures heart rate and respiration. While the pulse and respiration scales can be extremely useful in a sports context, during training sessions for example, they also provide a doctor with valuable information as to the patient's vital functions.

The Longines Asthmometer-Pulsometer Chronograph echoes the principal design features of the product on which it is based. The red heart rate scale and the blue respiration scale can be easily read off from the outer edge of the silvered dial. The 12 numeral and the eight gilded applied indices blend with the hands and the counter circles, which are also gold-plated. The steel case, which has a diameter of 38.50 mm like the original model, is enhanced by the bevelling of the horns. A black alligator strap adds the final touch to this doctor's watch.

  • Longines - Returns to Kitzbuhel

This year, the famous Swiss watchmaker reprises its role as the official timekeeper for the International Ski Federation's (FIS) Alpine Ski World Cup and World Championship races.

Longines will be celebrating its return to Kitzbuhel and is extremely proud to be responsible once again for timing the Hahnenkamm races. Longines will also partner with the 16th KitzCharity Trophy. This season the brand launched the Longines Rising Ski Stars prize, which reflects the company's commitment to supporting young athletes. The official watch for the season will be the Longines Saint-Imier Collection chronograph, a model that exemplifies the links that bind the brand to the town where it was founded in 1832 and where its headquarters remains.
Longines' longstanding association with competitive skiing started in Chamonix in 1933. The Swiss watchmaker began timing the Hahnenkamm races in Kitzbuhel in 1948 and has carried out this task more than 50 times since then. In 2013 Longines, which is the official timekeeper for the International Ski Federation's (FIS) Alpine Ski World Cup and World Championship races, will be back in the popular Tyrolean resort. Kitzbuhel is well known for its demanding Streif piste - renowned as the most difficult and fastest on the circuit. Many great champion skiers have tackled this legendary piste where Longines has helped to develop the technical side of the competition for several decades, introducing a number of innovative ideas to improve the timing and the public's enjoyment of the race. In 1993, for example, Longines introduced a new technology whereby the racers' intermediate times could be shown on television alongside the time of the fastest competitor for comparison.

In addition to its role as official timekeeper, Longines will partner with the famous KitzCharity Trophy, a race where professional skiers compete against celebrities on a section of the Streif piste. In order to help the event raise funds to improve the life of local needy mountain farmers and their families, Longines will compete in the race with its own team of skiers, made up of Richard Strohmeier, Longines VP Finance and two Austrian celebrities, Armin Assinger and Matthias Lanzinger.
At the end of the 2012/2013 ski season, Longines will present its Longines Rising Ski Stars prize to the two leading young skiers who take part in the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup. The best female skier under 21 years-old and the best male skier under 23 will each receive a trophy, a Longines watch and a cheque for CHF 20,000. This new award reflects Longines' continued commitment to supporting young athletes. The brand already shows its commitment through the Longines Future Tennis Aces tournament in Roland Garros for children under 13, as well as the Longines Future Racing Stars at the Prix de Diane Longines for promising young jockeys from France, the UK, Germany, Ireland and Italy.

Launched in Adelboden at the beginning of 2013, the Ski Live - Live Alpine Skiing by Longines app offers the possibility of watching races in real time thanks to the live timing feature. At the same time, users can catch up on the latest news concerning the World Cup and the World Championships, receive alerts and exclusive information on skiers and consult the results and rankings, including those for the Longines Rising Ski Stars.
The official watch for the season - the Longines Saint-Imier Collection chronograph - features the L688.2 column-wheel movement developed and produced exclusively for Longines. The 41 mm diameter case is made of steel and the black dial displays the hours and minutes with a small seconds at 9 o'clock, a calendar between 4 and 5 o'clock and of course the chronograph functions: a centre sweep seconds, a 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock and a 12-hour counter at 6 o'clock. This model is mounted on a steel bracelet with a folding safety clasp.

Finally, Longines would like to wish its ambassador of elegance Aksel Lund Svindal the very best of luck in his future races. The Norwegian has already got off to a b start this season.

  • Longines - Prix de Diane

Danedream and jockey Andrasch Starke won the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe run over a distance of 2,400 meters at Longchamp racecourse in a record time of 2'24''49. Danedream, that had also captured the Longines Grosser Preis von Baden in September, easily won the race and broke the racecourse record time dating back to 1997. Longines has the honour of being the official timekeeper of this Parisian racecourse, where the prestigious race is run. During the tremendous raceday, under a sunny sky, the Swiss watch brand also handed over to the jockey, trainer and owner of Dream Ahead, winner of the Qatar Prix de la Forêt, a model that embodies its philosophy as well as its famous slogan "Elegance is an attitude": The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph.

Having been involved in the world of sport since 1878, Longines has a vast experience in timing equestrian events. As part of its partnership with France Galop, the organisation responsible for national flat racing and steeplechase in France, Longines is present at Chantilly, Deauville and Longchamp racecourses as official timekeeper. The brand is also the title partner of the Prix de Diane Longines.

With a passionate involvement in equestrian sport, Longines is also an official partner and timekeeper for many equestrian events, such as most of the CSIO Nations Cup show jumping competitions as well as the various competitions organised by the Arab Equestrian League. In addition, apart from its traditional involvement in the Melbourne Cup Carnival, which includes the Longines MacKinnon Stakes, Longines is also the official timekeeper for other major meetings such as the Longines Singapore Gold Cup, organised by the Singapore Turf Club, the Dubai World Cup and the traditional Kentucky Derby, which is held at the Churchill Downs racecourse. Moreover, Longines has the honour of being a partner in Royal Ascot. The brand has deliberately chosen to be involved in equestrian events because they demand concentration, precision and experience.

    The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph
Longines took the opportunity to present a watch that embodies its philosophy as well as its famous slogan "Elegance is an attitude". The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph gives priority to classical and refined beauty. The column wheel that forms part of the movement serves to steer the functions of the chronograph mechanism. This model has a stainless steel, 39 mm diameter case that surrounds a silvered dial with 13 hour symbols. It displays the hours and minutes with a small seconds at 9 o'clock, as well as the date plus of course the chronograph functions. This model is fitted on a dark brown alligator strap and is water- resistant to 3 bar (30 metres).

  • Longines - The Column-Wheel Chronograph Record

Longines has passed a new milestone in its exploration of timepieces fitted with authentic technical features by creating, The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph Record, which has a direct-drive second hand with a vernier scale. Back in 2008 the company used a chronograph movement with a column wheel in the design of a contemporary embodiment of its expertise in mechanical chronographs this new model showcases the horological development and elegant appeal in the same vein.

The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph Record combines various elements that make this brand-new watch a modern descendant of the timing instruments created by Longines in the past. Thanks to its exclusive column-wheel movement, it joins the lineage of equipment developed by the brand since 1878, when Longines produced its first chronograph. Moreover, The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph Record has a centre direct-drive second hand with a vernier scale - echoing a mechanical chronograph counter designed by the company in 1966. This system allows the user to read off the time measured easily and precisely using the position of the centre seconds hand with its vernier scale relative to the fixed scale on the dial. The centre direct-drive seconds hand with its vernier scale brings it into line with the most up-to-date mechanical timing equipment available today.

The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph Record has a sporty design which complements its chronograph functions. The self-winding movement is housed in a stainless steel case with a diameter of 41 mm. The cream or black dial has a 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock, a 12-hour counter at 6 o'clock, a small seconds at 9 o'clock and a date aperture between 4 and 5 o'clock. The hands are coated with Super-LumiNova while the red centre dragging seconds hand with its vernier scale is complemented by a fixed scale on the dial which enables the user to read off eighths of a second. Echoing the timing equipment produced by Longines in the 1960s, The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph Record is fitted on an elegant black alligator strap.

Fitted with 27 jewels, the L688.2 movement is a self-winding calibre with a diameter of 30 mm and a height of 7.90 mm. The column wheel which is part of the movement serves to steer the chronograph functions (start, stop, return to zero). This system, and in particular the column wheel that was designed by engineers at ETA on Longines' request, makes this mechanical chronograph exceptionally easy to use, requiring only a light pressure to start and stop the timing function and to return the hands to zero. The blued steel column wheel is a work of art and the whole movement is a stylised revamping of a traditional technical system. Apart from its sophisticated design, the construction of the L688.2 calibre has been especially created to meet the requirements of timing.

With its combination of timing functions and a beauty that is characteristic of timing equipment dating from the 1960s, The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph Record is a contemporary timepiece steeped in the great tradition of mechanical timing.

  • Longines - Twenty-Four Hours

These timepieces, which had been developed specifically from the brand's aviators' watches, had a very distinctive 24-hour dial. This technical characteristic met the needs of navigators who, at the time, had to determine the position of the aircraft and set up a flight plan. Longines has now re-issued this watch for both historical and functional reasons, as well as for the aesthetic attraction it still holds. The new version has been given the name Longines Twenty-Four Hours.
In 2009, Harry Hofmann, a retired navigator from the old Swissair, visited the Longines Museum. He took advantage of this visit to present the company with a Longines watch that he used to wear when he was working for Swissair. This watch, with its 24-hour dial, is part of a series of timepieces produced by Longines in the 1950's especially for Swissair navigators.

In mid-20th century aviation, one of the responsibilities of the navigator was to determine the aircraft's position and to set up a flight plan. A reliable watch was therefore an essential part of his equipment. The fact that the flight crossed different time-zones in both directions and that the sun was not always visible as a point of reference necessitated instruments that could immediately indicate the correct part of the day. With a 24-hour dial navigators had no problem in this respect.
The watch that Harry Hofmann wore when he was a navigator for Swissair, flying DC-4s, DC-6s, DC-7s, DC-8s and Coronados up until 1974, had been specifically manufactured for the Swiss national airline by Longines in the early 1950's; it bears the number 8237331. It is fitted with a Longines calibre 37.9N with a centre seconds hand, which had been designed in the 1940s and used in Longines watches intended for pilots. The back cover of the steel case of Mr Hofmann's watch is engraved with the Swissair brand-name. Longines' archives reveal that it was one of a series of 70 pieces manufactured between 1953 and 1956 exclusively for the Swiss national airline. Technically, it is related to the aviator's watch - the Longines Weems Second-Setting model, produced in 1927, or the Lindbergh Hour Angle watch made by Longines from 1932 on. The Swiss watch manufacturer has chosen this watch as a re-issue for both historical and functional reasons, as well as for the aesthetic attraction it still holds. It has been given the name Longines Twenty-Four Hours.

The Longines Twenty-Four Hours is fitted with calibre L704.3, a self-winding movement whereby the hands make one full circle of the dial in 24 hours. The stainless steel case has a diameter of 47.50 mm; the dial is matt black with 24 white Arabic numerals coated with Super-LumiNova and has a railway-track minute circle. The time is indicated by hands coated with Super-LumiNova and the watch has a centre seconds hand, all for ease of use, like the original model. There is a date aperture at 3 o'clock. A sapphire glass covers the dial and this timepiece also has a transparent caseback, with its own cover, which reveals the delicate details of the movement. The inside surface of the cover is engraved with the words "Re-edition of a Longines navigation watch exclusively made for Swissair navigators, 1953-1956" plus the watch number. The Longines Twenty-Four Hours is mounted on a black alligator strap and is water-resistant to 3 bar (30 metres).

  • Longines - Prestigious partnership

Dubai (UAE), 11 January 2011 - Longines is delighted to announce its new partnership with the HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid al Maktoum Endurance Cup. On the strength of its long standing involvement in equestrian sports and sports timing, the famous Swiss watchmaker will now be official partner and timekeeper for this prestigious event. In endurance competitions, the rider must be in perfect harmony with his or her horse in order to manage its pace over the set distance. Endurance riding requires intensive training, fine concentration, good judgement and a great deal of experience. In keeping with the noble character of this discipline, The Longines Master Collection Moon Phases in rose gold is the official watch for this event.

Taking place on 15 January in Dubai, the HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid al Maktoum Endurance Cup by Longines will bring together the world's leading endurance riders for the fourth consecutive year. Organised by the Dubai Equestrian Club, the competition will start at 6 a.m. in the Dubai International Endurance City and will be attended by a host of prestigious guests who will be able to follow the riders into the desert in vehicles provided specially for this purpose. Longines is proud to announce its involvement in this elegant event which demands tremendous discipline on the part of the riders, in terms of the training, precision and the total mastery of their horses' ability throughout the event.

During the competition the riders have to cover a distance of 160 km, managing their pace to the best advantage, which demands a high level of discipline and precision - values which are of great importance at Longines too. The rider must know his or her horse extremely well and be totally at ease with him in order to manage his pace. The competition is divided into 5 stages; between each stage the horses are refreshed and checked by a vet to ensure that they are not over-exerting themselves. It is not necessarily the first past the post who wins the competition; the horse's condition must also be checked by a vet and passed - only then will it be a true winner. In addition to the winner, the first 10 riders who cross the finishing line in the following hour may be awarded the prize for the Best Condition horse.

As a perfect example of its famous slogan "Elegance is an attitude", the Swiss watchmaker has chosen its Longines Master Collection Moon Phases as the official watch for the event. The rose gold case houses a self-winding L678.2 calibre. The silvered dial shows the phases of the Moon at 6 o'clock and the date at 12 o'clock as well as having a 24-hour hand at 9 o'clock. This watch also offers chronograph functions and is mounted on a brown leather strap or a rose gold bracelet with a folding safety clasp.

  • Longines - Column-Wheel Chronograph

    The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph

On the strength of its long experience in timing, Longines has designed a timepiece that pays tribute to the various timing mechanisms developed during the company's history. Named the Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph, this model houses a brand new calibre whose exclusive development by ETA was mandated and financed by Longines and other brands within the Swatch Group. This self-winding, chronograph movement has a column wheel which drives the mechanism that measures periods of time - a technical device used by the famous St. Imier brand since 1878.
Longines started manufacturing timing equipment in 1878 with the launch of a simple 20 line chronograph; reference number 20H, that had a column wheel (covered by a washer) that governed the chronograph mechanism. Following Longines' progression into the field of timing, almost all the measuring equipment devised by the company used this same principle. Both calibres for pocket chronographs made by Longines, such as the 19CH (1889), the 19.73 (1887), the 19.73N (1909) and the 19.73N with a split-seconds function (1922), the 18.72 (1929) or the 24 line calibre intended specifically for sports timing (1939) and movements for the brand's wrist-chronographs, such as the 13.33Z (1913), the famous 13ZN (1946) or the 30CH (1947) thus all incorporated column-wheel systems for controlling and activating the chronograph functions, which varied according to the specific calibre.
This collection of timing equipment formed the foundation for Longines' history of involvement in timing and the world of sport. The mechanical, column-wheel chronograph thus became a traditional and authentic technical device at Longines. The new Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph model continues this horological heritage into the 21st century.
Having identified the modifications that have affected the world of mechanical timepieces over the past few years (a marked demand for high-quality mechanical watches, the popularity of mechanical chronographs and a fascination for traditional horological devices among the general public), Longines and other brands within the Swatch Group mandated and financed the exclusive development of a self-winding movement with a column wheel for a wrist-chronograph which has now been produced by ETA. This calibre is a contemporary embodiment of a long tradition of mechanical timing which is Longines' heritage.
Fitted with 27 jewels, the L.688.2 movement is a self-winding calibre with a diameter of 30 mm and a height of 7.90 mm. The blued steel column wheel controls the chronograph functions (start, stop, return to zero) and is part of a work of art that is a stylish update of a traditional technique. Beyond its sleek design, the L.688.2 calibre is an inspiring creation designed specifically to meet the demands of timing.
To house this brand-new, exclusive movement the watchmaker has chosen classical and elegant lines that are reminiscent of the timepieces that contributed to its success during the 20th century. The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph has a stainless steel case with a diameter of 40 mm that houses the L.688.2 calibre whose intricate workings can be admired through the transparent case back. The gold-plated Dauphine-style hands are mounted on top of a silvered dial featuring, gold-plated applied hour symbols, a small seconds at 9 o'clock, a 30-minute continuous action counter at 3 o'clock and a 12-hour continuous action counter at 6 o'clock. The timing features of the Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph combined with a classical design make this model a contemporary watch that echoes the great tradition of mechanical timing.
Based in St. Imier in Switzerland since 1832, the watchmaker Longines can look back on more than 175 years of non-stop craftsmanship, as well as a solid heritage as timekeeper for world championships in various sports and collaborator with different international sports federations.
