    Mr Juan-Carlos Capelli, Vice President of Longines and Head of International Marketing, and Mr Christophe Ameeuw, Founder and CEO of EEM, announced a new partnership during a press conference held on Tuesday 23 June 2015 in Ecaussinnes.

    This important agreement sees the Swiss watch brand becoming the Title Partner, as well as the Official Timekeeper and Watch of the Longines Masters. From now on, the three show jumping events set up by the Belgian organizer and held in Los Angeles, Paris and Hong Kong bear the name of Longines and become the Longines Masters of Los Angeles, the Longines Masters of Paris and the Longines Masters of Hong Kong.     Seth Hancock of Claiborne Farm and the late Marcel Zarour Atanacio, the former chairman of OSAF (South American Organization for the Promotion of Thoroughbreds), have been chosen as the recipients of the 2015 Longines and IFHA International Award of Merit, presented by Longines, Official Partner and Official Watch of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities.

    The award was given by Juan-Carlos Capelli, Longines' Vice President, Head of International Marketing, and Louis Romanet, chairman of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA), at the Gala Dinner of the Pan American Conference, on 5 June, in New York.

    Seth Hancock oversaw Claiborne Farm from 1972 through 2013. Soon after he became president, he syndicated Secretariat for a then record $6.08 million before the champion 2-year-old colt had begun his 3-year-old campaign, a campaign that saw him become the first American Triple Crown winner in 25 years.   • Longines - Future Tennis Aces

    The draw ceremony for the 6th edition of the Longines Future Tennis Aces 2015 was held on the 28th of May under the attendance of Arnaud Clement, patron for the 2015 edition. The event, hosted by journalist and former French tennis player Sarah Pitkowski, along with Vice-President and Longines International Marketing Director Juan-Carlos Capelli, provided the opportunity to officially introduce the public to the tournament program, organised by Longines since 2010.
    This year, 16 young boys under the age of 13 and from 16 different countries will have the opportunity to compete on a court installed at the foot of the Eiffel Tower under conditions identical to those of the Roland-Garros tournament, for which Longines has been the Official Partner and Timekeeper since 2007.

    Prior to the tournament, held between May 28 and 30, Longines invited the 16 players to a training camp at the Châtaigneraie Tennis Club - the "Longines Academy" - where they received valuable advice from Remi Barbarin and Julien Boutter, two specialists in the field.

    After spending the entire week alongside event sponsor Arnaud Clement, these young champions will enjoy a unique experience, while two finalists will get to take part in an exhibition match in his and Michael Llodra's company. At the end of the tournament, the winner will receive a cup straight from the hands of FFT President Jean Gachassin, along with a watch from Longines.   • Longines - Longines Future Tennis Aces 2015

    For the sixth successive year, Longines is inviting 16 promising young tennis players under the age of 13 - coming from 16 different countries - to showcase their talent in a competition worthy of the very greatest professional players: the Longines Future Tennis Aces tournament.
    Held from 28th to 30th May, the 2015 tournament, enhanced by former French tennis player Arnaud Clement as its patron, will pit 16 youngsters against one another on a clay court installed in front of the Eiffel Tower. The winner will be awarded with a Longines watch, the tournament cup and an annual scholarship until his 16th birthday.
    In addition, the final of the "Rendez-vous a Roland Garros" circuit, with which Longines has partnered for the first time this year, will be held on the very same court. The winners will receive a Wild Card, allowing them to compete against the best international players in the French Open's Junior tournament.

    The visit to Paris for these future champions will start on 26th and 27th May with the Longines Academy, a training camp that will give them the opportunity to familiarise themselves with playing on clay and to receive precious technical tips from two specialists in the sport. Throughout the week, the players will receive encouragement from Arnaud Clement, who the finalists will get the chance to play against in the exhibition match to be held after the tournament's final on Saturday 30th.

    The Longines Future Tennis Aces tournament is held during the first week of the French Open at Roland-Garros, of which Longines has been the Official Partner and Timekeeper since 2007. To mark this top-level sporting event, Longines is highlighting a new steel chronograph model, the Conquest Classic Moonphase, housing a self-winding mechanical movement.

    This year, Longines has become the partner of the "Rendez-vous a Roland-Garros" tournaments being held in China and Brazil. These competitions aim to identify the best players on clay from their countries with a view to allowing them to fulfil their dream of participating in one of the most prestigious tournaments in the international tennis calendar. The two winners of each tournament (one male and one female) will play against one another in the competition's finals to be held in Paris on May 24, on the same court as the Longines Future Tennis Aces event.

JustWorld International collects funds for a variety of projects designed to assist children in developing countries, particularly within the ambit of its "Give 4 Good" worldwide campaign, backed by many professional riders.     In Lyon, Longines presented Longines DolceVita. The timepiece of the event was a quartz watch in steel set with 32 diamonds whose sparkle emphasises the rectangular form and harmonious proportions of the case. The white dial features ten indices, an Arabic numeral 12 and silvered hands that indicate the hours and minutes, with a small second at 6 o'clock.     The official color of the Longines Kentucky Oaks is pink in celebration of all the ladies. The Pink Out encourages all Oaks attendees to wear pink or incorporate pink into their attire to show their support for cancer survivors. Churchill Downs will be decked out in pink as well, including pink-colored bunting, flower beds, flags and jockeys' and pony riders' apparel. Churchill Downs bugler Steve Buttleman will sport a pink uniform as he calls horses to the post throughout Longines Kentucky Oaks Day.
    Longines Kentucky Oaks Fashion Contest
    Ladies of all ages in attendance on Longines Kentucky Oaks Day can enter the Longines Kentucky Oaks Fashion Contest for the chance to win a stainless steel and rose gold Longines Saint-Imier Collection watch featuring a stunning diamond bezel.     $1 Million Longines Kentucky Oaks
    Kentucky Oaks Day - an unofficial Louisville holiday with many schools and businesses closed - is the third largest attended horse race in America only behind the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. In 2012, 112,552 attended the festivities, which marked the 12th time in the last 13 years that attendance topped the 100,000 mark. With a $1 million guaranteed purse, The Longines Kentucky Oaks is the most lucrative American horse race for 3-year-old fillies. Twenty-six Oaks winners have gone on to be crowned with an Eclipse Award as North America's champion 3-year-old filly and nine are enshrined in racing's Hall of Fame.
    The lofty purse reflects the Oaks' status and importance as a sports and entertainment event. Wagering on the 12-race card in 2012 was a record $39.9 million, which included an unprecedented $11.8 million on the Oaks alone. The maximum number of starters in the race is 14, and at least 13 fillies have been in the starting gate for five of the last seven years. The winner receives a silver trophy, a garland of pink star-gazer lilies and an estimated $564,200 payday.

  • Longines - History on the Racetrack

    Last year after Longines' elegant event (can we link to my story from 9.5.11 here?), I reported how I kept betting on jockey Andrasch Starke in the wrong races. Learning from my mistakes, I bet on him when it counted. As did the stall that brought Danedream to Iffezheim, Germany's premier horse racing event.
    Over the weekend, I kept thinking of how Danedream's story reminded me a lot of Seabiscuit, the horse who made it to Hollywood. A German thoroughbred racehorse who no one wanted at the beginning (her eventual owners only paid € 9,000 for her), four-year-old Danedream is the most successful racehorse to ever come from Germany. Her races were chiefly won in 2011 and 2012. This past weekend she raced for the last time in Iffezheim: apparently racehorses retire at the zenith of their careers.
     


    This is all great news for Longines, as the interest surrounding Danedream led the main Iffezheim race called the Grosser Preis von Baden - in which Longines offered a total of 250,000 euros and the prize of honor, including a watch, to the winners - to be nationally and internationally televised, preempting even soccer on German television.
     


    Grand Prix for a Hat
    The Iffezheim week is a highpoint of the social calendar in the Germany's Baden in addition to being the most important event on Germany's horseracing calendar. In addition to participating in the grand prix ball celebrating the sporting occasion, Longines, the event's timing partner, also awarded the Longines Prize for Elegance to the most elegant female visitor to the races. As you probably know, hats are grand tradition at equestrian sporting events, one that is also honored in Germany.     In 1933 the American aviator Charles Lindbergh set off with his wife on a trip of 47,000 km around the North Atlantic. Having achieved a remarkable technical and human feat in being the first man to fly non-stop across the North Atlantic in his Spirit of St. Louis, Lindbergh wanted to explore possible future air routes across the far north before returning to the USA via Cape Verde and Brazil. The equipment Lindbergh took with him on his long expedition included a wrist chronograph created specially by Longines for this very purpose. Today Longines is re-issuing this exceptional timepiece, known as the Longines Lindbergh's Atlantic Voyage Watch, as a tribute to the historical feat achieved by this pioneer of the skies.


    In the wake of his solo flight in 1927 from New York to Paris - the first non-stop flight across the North Atlantic - Charles Lindbergh gained international fame and was in great demand by aviation companies, which were being developed at the time. Wanting to be of service, Lindbergh decided in 1933 to investigate possible air routes across the far north with his wife, Anne Morrow Lindbergh. The young couple set off from New York on a trip of some 47,000 km that would take them to New Foundland, Greenland, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Great Britain, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Portugal, the Azores, the Canary Islands and Cape Verde before returning to the USA via the Gambia, Brazil and Cuba.


    For this expedition, Lindberg decided to take a powerful aircraft with a 710 hp engine and a variable propeller. He also took two radios and an inflatable canoe in case they were forced to eject from the aircraft. During their trip, they christened their plane the Tingmissartoq, which is an Inuit word meaning "the one that flies like a great bird". Lindbergh's navigational instruments included a directional gyroscope, an artificial horizon, an icing gauge and two aperiodic compasses, all of which were the very latest equipment at that time. But Lindbergh also took with him a Longines chronograph developed specially for his flight to Greenland and the far north.
    This time-piece had a wristwatch chronograph movement with a 30-minute counter. It measured time to the fifth of a second and the chronograph mechanism also had a tachymeter that could measure speeds of up to 500 kph. With the flying conditions that were experienced by the Lindberghs, a reliable time-piece was one of the final safeguards as far as navigational instruments were concerned.

    Longines' creation of this timepiece for the Lindberghs' trip around the North Atlantic was evidence of the confidence that the American aviator had in the Swiss watch manufacturer. In 1927 the time-measuring instruments created by Longines enabled the International Aeronautical Federation, for which the company had been an official supplier since 1919, to measure the duration of Lindbergh's flight from New York to Paris with great precision. Subsequently, by virtue of his experience as a pilot and navigator, Lindbergh devised a system to improve the aerial and nautical navigation of the period. He contacted Longines, who put his invention into practice by producing the Lindbergh Hour Angle watch. Together with a sextant and a nautical almanac, the watch could be used to determine geographical position by calculating one's exact longitude. In 1933, to mark its productive collaboration with Lindbergh, Longines designed the watch chronograph especially for the Lindbergh's' trip around the North Atlantic.
    Today, Longines is re-issuing this time-piece under the name of the Longines Lindbergh's Atlantic Voyage Watch as a tribute to the long trip undertaken by the couple across the far north. This mechanical wrist chronograph has a diameter of 47.50 mm and a self-winding movement. Just like the original model, it has small seconds at 9 o'clock and a 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock. The time and time measurements are displayed using hands of blued steel on a silvered dial with a white surround and the watch has a tachymeter for measuring speeds of up to 500 kph. The model has a sapphire glass and a solid case back that protects a transparent back cover through which the workings of the movement can be admired. The watch is mounted on a genuine brown alligator strap. The new versions are in either steel or rose gold. The Longines Lindbergh's Atlantic Voyage Watch constitutes an exquisite contemporary version of a timepiece that was part of a great aeronautical adventure.
