  • Longines - The Lindbergh Hour Angle watch

The Longines Heritage collection is full to the brim with re-editions of models that are significant not just to the brand itself but also to the history of various fields in which timekeeping has played an important role over the years.

Born from the pioneering age of aviation
One such timepiece is the Hour Angle watch, which was developed by the US subsidiary of Longines, Longines-Wittnauer, in conjunction with Charles Lindbergh, the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927. Lindbergh developed the watch as an improvement to the "second setting" watch, also developed by Longines with Lindbergh's navigation tutor, Navy Captain Phillip Van Horn Weems.

The independently adjustable seconds ring on Captain Weems' innovation allowed pilots to set the seconds of their watch to a radio time signal without stopping the sweep seconds hand, thus eliminating a margin of error that could amount to several miles. The Hour Angle watch developed by Charles Lindbergh added degrees of arc on three separate scales to this functionality to speed up the calculation of the hour angle, which a pilot could use to determine his longitude.

Wearing the re-edition of the Longines Hour Angle watch transports you to a bygone age. A small pusher on the case between 4 and 5 o'clock opens the hinged back on the large 47.5mm case that reminds you that early pilot's watches were adapted from pocket watches. You can also feel the reassuring weight of the large oscillating mass as it winds the L699 calibre self-winding movement when the watch is on your wrist, while an oversized "onion skin" crown reminds you that early pilots had to manipulate their watches while wearing thick leather gloves for protection in the cockpit.

    Celestial navigation
These physical characteristics are, however, a mere foretaste for the huge mental shock of putting yourself in the position of the early aviation pioneers. Needless to say, there was no GPS around at the time, nor radar. In fact the time zones around the world were only just reaching the point of standardization. John Harrison had solved the problem of longitude some two hundred years earlier with his marine chronometers but these were limited to the sedate pace of an ocean-going vessel. The much higher speeds of the new flying machines meant that calculations based on celestial navigation had to be made much quicker. Longines offers a handy guide as to how the Hour Angle watch works in practice.

Although celestial navigation has since been superseded by modern satellite and GPS technology, it was nevertheless taught to US Navy recruits until 1997 because it has global coverage, it can be used independently of ground aids and, most importantly, it does not give off any signals that could be detected by an enemy. Despite its vintage look, therefore, the Longines Heritage Hour Angle watch still serves an important function. As you glance at the elegant blued-steel hands to read the time, spare a thought for the early pioneers in "avigation" for whom its precision meant the difference between life and death.

  • Longines - Glasgow 2014

52 years after its first association with the Games in Perth, Australia, Longines renews its support to this multi-sport event, taking place from 23 July to 3 August in Glasgow. Involving 71 teams of athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations and Territories, this will be the largest competition ever held in Scotland.

Longines will provide the On Venue Results (OVR) service that includes the handling, the processing and the broadcasting of the official times and scores of the different sport events.

Timekeeping itself is only a modest part in the global picture and Longines will rely on its long-lasting experience in complete data handling for Glasgow 2014. Any score, distance, name, team, ranking and time requires technology to instantly process and distribute it as TV graphics for television networks. Scoreboards and displays will be spread around the different sporting venues, and the Commentator's Information System (CIS) will make available to rights holding broadcasters comprehensive information about the competitions, statistics and results.

The Official Watch of Glasgow 2014 will be a chronograph in steel from the Conquest Classic collection, housing an exclusive mechanical column-wheel calibre. With a diameter of 41 mm, its black dial is set with one arabic numeral and 11 applied indices with Super-LumiNova®. For the Prix de Diane Longines 2014, the brand will be promoting a ladies' watch in steel from its Conquest Classic collection. Set with 30 diamonds, this timepiece with its white mother-of-pearl dial and diamond hour symbols is a perfect example of the elegance of this unique race meeting.

  • Longines - The Longines Column-Wheel Single Push-Piece Chronograph

As part of the Longines Heritage Collection, The Longines Column-Wheel Single Push-Piece Chronograph models recall the very first chronograph wristwatches created by the brand in 1933. These timepieces housed the 13.33z calibre, the first chronograph movement made by Longines to equip wristwatches.

The Longines Column-Wheel Single Push-Piece Chronograph model houses the L788 calibre, a monopusher movement developed by ETA exclusively for Longines and which, like its illustrious predecessor, is equipped with a column-wheel and measures 13¼ lines. All the chronograph functions can be controlled by simply pressing the single push-piece.

The Longines Column-Wheel Single Push-Piece Chronograph comes in three versions, all with a 40 mm diameter. Two versions, one in steel and one in rose gold, feature Arabic numerals, and a third version, also available in steel, displays Roman numerals. The single push-piece, inserted into the fluted crown, recalls the original timepieces. The white dials are adorned with painted black numerals and a red "12", in a direct reference to the dials of the period. They are completed by two counters, at 3 and 9 o'clock, together with a date aperture at 6 o'clock and blued hands.

The cases are a particularly interesting feature of these timepieces. Two of the models have a well-rounded case, available in steel and in rose gold. Taking its inspiration from an historic timepiece, the third model in steel is fitted with moving lugs. This version has a thicker case with a more angular profile. On all three versions, the movement's blue column wheel can be admired through the transparent sapphire crystal case back. All models of The Longines Column-Wheel Single Push-Piece Chronograph are fitted with a brown alligator strap.

The grey brushed dial features black, finely painted Roman numerals and a chapter-ring around the outside. A fine line of black varnish on the minute and hour hands echoes the lines of the numerals, providing a delicate contrast.

While the square case is at first glance more classical, the Longines Heritage 1968 reveals an interesting profile with its slightly bevelled glass that protrudes over the middle. Moreover, the trapezium-shaped date aperture contrasts with the more stringent lines of the case. The watch is fitted with a mechanical movement, L595 and the whole is mounted on an elegant black alligator strap.

  • Longines - Heritage 1940 and Heritage 1942

To mark its 180th anniversary, Longines is launching various new models throughout the year.

Founded in 1832 in the town of Saint-Imier, the famous Swiss watchmaker has a long tradition marked by the continual elegance of its products. Longines Heritage 1940 and Longines Heritage 1942 both symbolise the brand's rich history and are thus perfect products for celebrating this anniversary and extending Longines' Heritage segment. The distinctive shape of the watch case lends these models a striking look.

    Longines Heritage 1940

Boasting a contemporary spirit, this watch is based on a model dating from 1940. It keeps indeed its central lines, such as the high bezel that gives it a b character and reminds the Longines' models of that time. Longines Heritage 1940 immediately catches the eye through its sleek lines and shaped contours. The circular steel case with a diameter of 38.50 mm houses a self-winding, mechanical movement, the calibre L615. The lacquered dial is available in white or black and features a railway-track minute ring and 11 Arab numerals. The hands are of blued steel in the white-dial version and rhodium-plated in the black version. And finally, the small seconds and date aperture at 6 o'clock complete the image of Longines Heritage 1940, which is mounted on a black alligator strap.

    Longines Heritage 1942

Longines Heritage 1942 has been directly inspired by a model dating from 1942 which was fitted with calibre 13ZN. This new timepiece has a circular steel case with a diameter of 40 mm which houses calibre L688, a column-wheel chronograph movement designed exclusively for Longines. The round push-pieces blend perfectly into the distinctive shape of the case and remind the Longines' chronographs of that period, which are exceptional and much sought after models. The lacquered dial, available in white or black, features 9 Arab numerals to contrast with the dial and a railway-track minute ring as well as a tachometric scale around the rim of the dial. Finally blued steel hands, for the white-dial version, or rhodium-plated hands, for the black-dial version, harmonise beautifully with the elegance of the dial. Longines Heritage 1942 is fitted on a black alligator strap.

  • Longines - The Column-Wheel Chronograph Record

Longines has passed a new milestone in its exploration of timepieces fitted with authentic technical features by creating, The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph Record, which has a direct-drive second hand with a vernier scale. Back in 2008 the company used a chronograph movement with a column wheel in the design of a contemporary embodiment of its expertise in mechanical chronographs this new model showcases the horological development and elegant appeal in the same vein.

The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph Record combines various elements that make this brand-new watch a modern descendant of the timing instruments created by Longines in the past. Thanks to its exclusive column-wheel movement, it joins the lineage of equipment developed by the brand since 1878, when Longines produced its first chronograph. Moreover, The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph Record has a centre direct-drive second hand with a vernier scale - echoing a mechanical chronograph counter designed by the company in 1966. This system allows the user to read off the time measured easily and precisely using the position of the centre seconds hand with its vernier scale relative to the fixed scale on the dial. The centre direct-drive seconds hand with its vernier scale brings it into line with the most up-to-date mechanical timing equipment available today.

The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph Record has a sporty design which complements its chronograph functions. The self-winding movement is housed in a stainless steel case with a diameter of 41 mm. The cream or black dial has a 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock, a 12-hour counter at 6 o'clock, a small seconds at 9 o'clock and a date aperture between 4 and 5 o'clock. The hands are coated with Super-LumiNova while the red centre dragging seconds hand with its vernier scale is complemented by a fixed scale on the dial which enables the user to read off eighths of a second. Echoing the timing equipment produced by Longines in the 1960s, The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph Record is fitted on an elegant black alligator strap.

Fitted with 27 jewels, the L688.2 movement is a self-winding calibre with a diameter of 30 mm and a height of 7.90 mm. The column wheel which is part of the movement serves to steer the chronograph functions (start, stop, return to zero). This system, and in particular the column wheel that was designed by engineers at ETA on Longines' request, makes this mechanical chronograph exceptionally easy to use, requiring only a light pressure to start and stop the timing function and to return the hands to zero. The blued steel column wheel is a work of art and the whole movement is a stylised revamping of a traditional technical system. Apart from its sophisticated design, the construction of the L688.2 calibre has been especially created to meet the requirements of timing.

With its combination of timing functions and a beauty that is characteristic of timing equipment dating from the 1960s, The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph Record is a contemporary timepiece steeped in the great tradition of mechanical timing.

  • Longines - History 1900s - 1910s

1900s: Universal Exhibition in ParisPressing market demand with respect to both technology and styling drove watchmakers at Longines to design caliber L21.59. After the first Longines watch's 1867 bronze medal, in 1900 Longines caliber 21.59 won a Grand Prix at the Universal Exhibition in Paris with a one-of-a-kind creation called La Renommee, in 18K gold. The first wristwatches
When watches gradually migrated from waistcoat to wrist, Longines was in 1905 the first to turn out wristwatches by largely mechanical means. This innovation marked the start of a complete reorganization of the Longines' factory working and production methods during the 1920s and 1930s.1910s: The first shaped watchesAs early as 1912, Longines watches began to lose their round silhouette, the better to explore, and exploit, the geometry of elegance. Truly revolutionary for the period, Longines' rectangular and square-shaped models marked the start of a century of Longines design. Style followed style in any number of variations as taste turned into trend and trend into fashion, made possible by ever finer craftsmanship and sophisticated technologyLongines and gymnastics
Longines entered the world of gymnastics at the 1912 Swiss Federal Gymnastics Meet in Basel, Switzerland. The partnership resulted in a world's premiere: the introduction of automatic timing. Longines used an electromechanical system with start and finish tapes, fielded for the first time for the 80-meter dash. It marked a turning point in Longines' increasingly close cooperation with the world of gymnastics.

  • Longines - History 1832 - 1860s - 1880s

1832s: The birth of LonginesThe Longines story began in 1832 when Auguste Agassiz moved to the tiny Swiss town of Saint-Imier and found work at the Comptoir horloger Raiguel Jeune, a watch parts trader. A year later, he and two associates, Florian Morel and Henri Raiguel, set up the Comptoir Raiguel Jeune & Cie. One of Agassiz's sisters, Olympe, then married Charles-Marc Francillon, a Lausanne-born businessman, and in 1834 they had a son, Ernest. When Henri Raiguel retired, in 1838, ownership of what had become Comptoir Agassiz & Cie passed to Auguste Agassiz and Florian Morel. In 1847, Auguste Agassiz became the venture's sole owner. In 1852, his nephew Ernest Francillon joined the company, finally taking over from his uncle in 1862. Now styled Ancienne Maison Auguste Agassiz, Ernest Francillon, Successeur, the company was ready for business. At that time, watchmaking in the area was still largely a cottage industry, with all the work done at home on parts later assembled elsewhere.1860s: The first Longines watchIn 1866, Francillon acquired two plots of land on the outskirts of Saint-Imier, on the right bank of the Suze river near a place called Les Longines (meaning "long and narrow fields " in the dialectal French of the area). There he built the first Longines factory, an investment that finally allowed him to gather his entire workforce under one roof for the first time.In 1867, Longines' first movement, called L20A, entered production in the new premises. At the time, watches were all key-wound. Longines' first watch broke with this tradition, its lever movement being wound and set by the crown. Ernest Francillon personally presented his novel timepiece at the 1867 Universal Exhibition in Paris. He returned to Saint-Imier with a bronze medal.Starting with his very first watch movement in 1867, Francillon's entire production featured the engraving of a winged hourglass as identification. By 1874, the company had already sent out its first circular warning customers against counterfeit movements.1880s: Registration of the Longines name and trademarkOn July 19th, 1880, at 11:00 am, Ernest Francillon entered the premises of the Swiss Federal Office of Intellectual Property to register the original Longines brand and its winged hourglass symbol under numbers 118 and 119 respectively. The new Longines logotype was first registered under number 2684 at 4:00 pm on May 27th, 1889 at the Swiss Federal Office of Intellectual Property and under number 14 on March 27th, 1893 at the International Office of Intellectual Property (today WIPO, World Intellectual Property Organization).Universal Exhibitions
In 1885, Longines won its first Grand Prix at the Universal Exhibition in Antwerp. Further success followed in Brussels, in 1897, Paris in 1889, 1900 and 1925, Milan, in 1906, Genoa, in 1914, Bern, in 1914, Philadelphia, in 1926 and Barcelona, in 1929. Longines' record of ten Grand Prix and 28 Gold Medals has never been equalled by any other watch manufacturer.

  • Longines - Ariella Kaeslin visits Longines headquarters

This summer, Longines announced that the newly crowned European Vault Champion and silver medallist at the World Championships was to become its latest brand ambassador. Ariella can currently be seen in the international advertising campaign for the new Longines PrimaLuna Ladies Collection.
Autumn 2009 has been an exhausting though very rewarding time for Ariella. As always, the young athlete trained diligently and untiringly for the climax of the international gymnastics season - the World Championships in London. Since she sensationally took silver in the vault, the buzz around this young woman has grown ever louder. The first Swiss female gymnast to win a medal at the World Championships found some time in her busy schedule to pay a visit to Longines' headquarters in Saint-Imier.
Ariella was welcomed by Longines President Walter von Känel before good-humouredly answering questions from the waiting media. She then signed autographs for the young members of the local gymnastics club, to their great delight. This was followed by a tour of the Longines' watch and timekeeping museum, as well as its production facilities. At the end of her visit, she chose a watch from the collection "La Grande Classique de Longines", which will accompany her on the road to even greater success.
Although she is only 22 years old, Ariella has already scooped the 2008 Swiss Sports Personality of the Year award. Her talent has delighted the viewing public, and the precision, harmony and elegance of her every movement has won over the professional judges. With her elegance, natural charm, flair and exactness, Ariella perfectly personifies the Longines core values and philosophy of "Elegance is an Attitude".
„My coach has always encouraged me to execute my gymnastic exercises in a precise way, just like clockwork. That's why Longines and I fit together perfectly."
    Ariella Käslin.
Longines has long enjoyed close ties with gymnastics, dating back to 1912 when it was the official timekeeper of the Swiss Federal Gymnastics Meet in Basel. During the 80-meter sprint event, it unveiled its new revolutionary electromechanical timekeeping system with start and finish tapes. A world-first, this automatic timing system would mark a turning point in Longines' already longstanding partnership with the world of sport. Thanks to its technological breakthroughs Longines has been the official timekeeper of all artistic and rhythmic gymnastics competitions organised by the "Federation Internationale de Gymnastique" (FIG - the gymnastics world governing body) since 1985. This enduring partnership was bolstered further in 2009 when the FIG extended Longines' contract for an additional four years.

  • Longines - PrimaLuna, a new star in the Longines galaxy

A silvery moon on a spring night; a star that glistens reaches its peak and then disappears. A symbol of passing time, living time and the moon that entrances us with its rounded, delicate lines the new Longines PrimaLuna is a tribute to this silvery star. Its soft silhouette is enhanced by the exquisite purity of the dial and the whole is illuminated by a play of sparkling diamonds. Graceful, magical, this is a model that will seduce women who appreciate contemporary, sophisticated elegance.
The Moon has been used to measure time by every civilisation; this night star is feminine, cyclical and eternal. A star that produces dreams! In many cultures the New Moon is a symbol of renewal when it marks the beginning of a new year or the arrival of spring. To pay tribute to this mystical star, the famous Saint-Imier watchmaker is launching an exquisitely fine interpretation of the magic of the Moon this year: the Longines PrimaLuna.

The subtle mystery of spring, the Longines PrimaLuna emerges from a wakening world. The Moon is no longer pale but iridescent, opaline, masterful. Sheherazade moves elegantly into position under the stars...

  • Longines - A new Ambassador of Elegance

Agnieszka is joining the family of Longines testimonials that includes the legendary couple Andre Agassi and Stefanie Graf.
Longines is proud of its long history of sports timekeeping. As the official partner of the legendary French Open at Roland Garros since 2007, the Swiss watch manufacturer is delighted to be able to include in its family of ambassadors of elegance two of the most famous winners of the prestigious Paris tournament, Stefanie Graf and Andre Agassi. Incidentally, the couple will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of their triumph in Paris on 6 June at a Longines event not to be missed.

Agnieszka Radwanska will also be present and will be making her first international appearance as a Longines Ambassador of Elegance. The young talent will of course also be competing at the French Open this year for the third consecutive time.
This young player is the product of a family success story. Like her illustrious predecessor Stefanie Graf, Agnieszka started playing tennis at the age of 4, spurred on by her father. She grew up and trained in Gronau in Germany. After going professional in 2005 she succeeded in reaching the last 16 at Wimbledon that year. Agnieszka won her first tournaments (singles and doubles) two years later. In 2008 this young girl became the first-ever female Polish player to reach the top 10 in the world rankings.
A basically calm but extremely determined person, Agnieszka hopes to become the world no. 1 one day ... no more, no less!
What does Agnieszka think about her partnership with Longines? "It's a privilege to be a Longines Ambassador of Elegance. To represent this fantastic watch manufacturer alongside such tennis legends as Stefanie Graf and Andre Agassi is a real honour. I love Switzerland and I adore watches but until now I've never had a watch made by such a beautiful brand," she announced at her press conference in Warsaw.
On the subject of this new partnership, Walter von Känel, President of Longines, said that he was delighted to welcome the young Polish tennis player to the Longines family and was looking forward to congratulating her on her future successes.

  • Longines - Column-Wheel Chronograph

    The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph

On the strength of its long experience in timing, Longines has designed a timepiece that pays tribute to the various timing mechanisms developed during the company's history. Named the Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph, this model houses a brand new calibre whose exclusive development by ETA was mandated and financed by Longines and other brands within the Swatch Group. This self-winding, chronograph movement has a column wheel which drives the mechanism that measures periods of time - a technical device used by the famous St. Imier brand since 1878.
Longines started manufacturing timing equipment in 1878 with the launch of a simple 20 line chronograph; reference number 20H, that had a column wheel (covered by a washer) that governed the chronograph mechanism. Following Longines' progression into the field of timing, almost all the measuring equipment devised by the company used this same principle. Both calibres for pocket chronographs made by Longines, such as the 19CH (1889), the 19.73 (1887), the 19.73N (1909) and the 19.73N with a split-seconds function (1922), the 18.72 (1929) or the 24 line calibre intended specifically for sports timing (1939) and movements for the brand's wrist-chronographs, such as the 13.33Z (1913), the famous 13ZN (1946) or the 30CH (1947) thus all incorporated column-wheel systems for controlling and activating the chronograph functions, which varied according to the specific calibre.
This collection of timing equipment formed the foundation for Longines' history of involvement in timing and the world of sport. The mechanical, column-wheel chronograph thus became a traditional and authentic technical device at Longines. The new Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph model continues this horological heritage into the 21st century.
Having identified the modifications that have affected the world of mechanical timepieces over the past few years (a marked demand for high-quality mechanical watches, the popularity of mechanical chronographs and a fascination for traditional horological devices among the general public), Longines and other brands within the Swatch Group mandated and financed the exclusive development of a self-winding movement with a column wheel for a wrist-chronograph which has now been produced by ETA. This calibre is a contemporary embodiment of a long tradition of mechanical timing which is Longines' heritage.
Fitted with 27 jewels, the L.688.2 movement is a self-winding calibre with a diameter of 30 mm and a height of 7.90 mm. The blued steel column wheel controls the chronograph functions (start, stop, return to zero) and is part of a work of art that is a stylish update of a traditional technique. Beyond its sleek design, the L.688.2 calibre is an inspiring creation designed specifically to meet the demands of timing.
To house this brand-new, exclusive movement the watchmaker has chosen classical and elegant lines that are reminiscent of the timepieces that contributed to its success during the 20th century. The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph has a stainless steel case with a diameter of 40 mm that houses the L.688.2 calibre whose intricate workings can be admired through the transparent case back. The gold-plated Dauphine-style hands are mounted on top of a silvered dial featuring, gold-plated applied hour symbols, a small seconds at 9 o'clock, a 30-minute continuous action counter at 3 o'clock and a 12-hour continuous action counter at 6 o'clock. The timing features of the Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph combined with a classical design make this model a contemporary watch that echoes the great tradition of mechanical timing.
Based in St. Imier in Switzerland since 1832, the watchmaker Longines can look back on more than 175 years of non-stop craftsmanship, as well as a solid heritage as timekeeper for world championships in various sports and collaborator with different international sports federations.
