  • Longines - Conquest 1/100th St. Moritz

Longines is now the Official Watch of the resort of St. Moritz, which is renowned worldwide as the epitome of elegance, a value dear to the Swiss watch brand. The spectacular ski resort hosts FIS Alpine World Ski Championships and World Cup stages all timed by Longines. It is also avenue for stylish equestrian events, such as the Longines CSI St. Moritz or the Night Turf St. Moritz and its Longines Show-Sprint Race. To celebrate this new partnership, the winged hourglass brand is launching an exclusive edition created especially for St. Moritz: the Conquest 1/100th St. Moritz. Touches of yellow and blue on the hands, the dial or the flange subtly hint at the iconic logo of St. Moritz, which is also engraved on the case back.

The Conquest 1/100th series responds to the needs of athletes, professionals and sports fans, besides many others, since it measures multiple intermediary times and has an intuitive analogue display that shows the time to one hundredth of a second using a separate hand. All of this is possible thanks to a latest generation movement.

The demands required for Longines to reach such an extreme level of precision have led to the development of a new quartz movement, the L440, developed exclusively for Longines by the manufacture ETA. This new model includes a microcontroller with a flash memory that allows the watch to be reset instantly and allows intermediary times to be recorded. With a diameter of 41 mm, this steel model has a silver face that displays hours, minutes, small seconds at 6 o'clock, the date and other chronographic functions: a central seconds hand, a 30-minute stopwatch at 2 o'clock and a 12-hour stopwatch at 10 o'clock. The hand in yellow displays time to one hundredth of a second and is the watch's crowning glory at the centre. The model is also fitted with a steel bracelet and a butterfly clasp.

Represented by tennis legend and longtime Ambassador of Elegance Stefanie Graf, Longines had a b presence throughout Churchill Downs and other Derby-affiliated events including Taste of Derby, the Longines Kentucky Oaks Fashion Contest, the Kentucky Derby red carpet and the Winner's Circle Party. As a result of an expanded partnership with Churchill Downs, this year the Kentucky Oaks was renamed the "Longines Kentucky Oaks." The brand hosted the Longines Kentucky Oaks Fashion Contest during Longines Kentucky Oaks Day to celebrate the elegant and iconic style of the Kentucky Derby. With the help of celebrity judges - Stefanie Graf, Harper's Bazaar Editor Joyann King and supermodel Coco Rocha - Longines chose the most elegant lady and awarded her a stainless steel and rose gold Longines Saint-Imier Collection watch featuring a stunning diamond bezel. Watches from the Longines Saint-Imier Collection were also presented to the winning horses' owner, trainer and jockey on Longines Kentucky Oaks Day.

The Longines Saint-Imier Collection is inspired by the watchmaking heritage of the brand's home territory. To celebrate its rich history and roots within the village of Saint-Imier, the collection includes a series of timepieces in stainless steel and rose gold bracelet combinations, as well as rose gold and stainless steel leather band combinations. The chronograph watches within the collection are fitted with the column-wheel movement specially developed and produced by ETA exclusively for Longines.
Emanating the core values and aesthetic of the brand - tradition, elegance and performance - the Longines Saint-Imier Collection is rooted in the unique shape of the case inspired by a 1945 Longines watch model. The watches in the collection display sleek lines and distinctive lugs, giving them a classic yet contemporary appeal. All models are fitted with mechanical movements whose intricate workings can be admired through the transparent sapphire back cover.

  • Longines - Conquest Classic

As a partner of the most prestigious flat races in the world, Longines was keen to launch a collection of timepieces to be worn amidst the excitement of the parade rings at Chantilly, Hong Kong, Royal Ascot or Dubai racecourses.

As a tribute to the chronographs produced from 1881 on for race-goers and jockeys in New York, the famous Swiss watchmaker has now launched the Conquest Classic line. True to the brand's values of elegance, tradition and performance, this new collection of models, all fitted with self-winding calibres, is at the same time totally contemporary and perfectly timeless.

The "Conquest" brand was patented through the WIPO on 25 May 1954. Since then this name has been used for many successful models manufactured by Longines across the years. Today, Conquest Classic joins the brand's other collections of classical beauty that have helped to make Longines' reputation and success throughout the world. This new line is dedicated to those race-goers who share the excitement of the season's most prestigious race meetings, from Chantilly to Hong Kong and from Dubai to Royal Ascot.

Conquest Classic is available in three sizes. The ladies' models have a diameter of 29.50 mm and show the hours, minutes and seconds as well as the date; they are available in steel, rose gold or in a combination of steel and rose gold. The black or silvered dial has applied 12, 6 and 9 numerals, lending this model a truly sporty look. The various versions are also available with a diameter of 40.00 mm. The mother-of-pearl dial set with 12 diamonds lends the ladies' models an extra air of refinement, and in some models the bezel is also set with 30 diamonds. These models are fitted on black alligator straps or steel or steel and rose gold bracelets, each to match the dial. All straps and bracelets all have a folding safety clasp.

With a diameter of 41 mm, the chronographs are fitted with an L688 column-wheel movement specially developed and produced by ETA exclusively for Longines. The case is either in steel, steel and rose gold or rose gold alone. The silvered or black dial shows the hours and minutes, with a small seconds at 9 o'clock, date and chronograph functions: a centre sweep seconds, a 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock and a 12-hour counter at 6 o'clock. These chronographs are fitted on a black alligator strap or a steel or steel and rose gold bracelet, all having a folding safety clasp.

  • Longines - New campaign featuring Simon Baker

The well-known actor, who plays Patrick Jane in the series The Mentalist, debuted in his new role as a Longines Ambassador of Elegance at Chantilly Racecourse, the home of the Prix de Diane Longines race.
On the 17th of June, Simon Baker was launched as a Longines Ambassador of Elegance on the occasion of the Prix de Diane Longines. At the Chantilly Racecourse the Australian actor showed that he was the perfect embodiment of the brand's values.

The sumptuous setting of the Château de Chantilly and its famous racecourse was a dream backdrop for the first photo-shoot featuring Simon Baker with the Swiss watch brand. The team working with the celebrated photographer Nicolas Guerin were able to admire Simon Baker's professionalism. The actor posed in three atmospheric scenes that will constitute the three themes of the advertising campaign centred around the slogan "Elegance is an attitude".

The first part of the campaign, revealed here, features Simon Baker in the world of horse-racing. This comes as no surprise, given Longines' involvement in equestrian sports. Chantilly, the capital of horse racing in France, was naturally the ideal setting to shoot Simon Baker and a thoroughbred racehorse.
Referring to the photo shoot, Simon Baker said: "I am proud to have been selected as an ambassador for such an established and elegant brand as Longines. Our first campaign shoot was a pleasure to work on. I felt very at home with both the Longines family and the horse. I am very pleased with the results and I look forward to future collaborations."

For his part, Juan-Carlos Capelli, Vice President and Head of International Marketing of Longines, was totally satisfied with the company's first session with Simon Baker: "What a pleasure it was working with him! His politeness and professionalism charmed everyone, including the photographer's team. We are extremely proud to reveal the first part of this new campaign in which Simon Baker is presenting The Longines Saint-Imier Collection."
During the coming months, the second and third parts of the campaign will be launched with exclusive photos from the shoot.

  • Longines - History on the Racetrack

Last year after Longines' elegant event (can we link to my story from 9.5.11 here?), I reported how I kept betting on jockey Andrasch Starke in the wrong races. Learning from my mistakes, I bet on him when it counted. As did the stall that brought Danedream to Iffezheim, Germany's premier horse racing event.
Over the weekend, I kept thinking of how Danedream's story reminded me a lot of Seabiscuit, the horse who made it to Hollywood. A German thoroughbred racehorse who no one wanted at the beginning (her eventual owners only paid € 9,000 for her), four-year-old Danedream is the most successful racehorse to ever come from Germany. Her races were chiefly won in 2011 and 2012. This past weekend she raced for the last time in Iffezheim: apparently racehorses retire at the zenith of their careers.

This is all great news for Longines, as the interest surrounding Danedream led the main Iffezheim race called the Grosser Preis von Baden - in which Longines offered a total of 250,000 euros and the prize of honor, including a watch, to the winners - to be nationally and internationally televised, preempting even soccer on German television.

    Grand Prix for a Hat
The Iffezheim week is a highpoint of the social calendar in the Germany's Baden in addition to being the most important event on Germany's horseracing calendar. In addition to participating in the grand prix ball celebrating the sporting occasion, Longines, the event's timing partner, also awarded the Longines Prize for Elegance to the most elegant female visitor to the races. As you probably know, hats are grand tradition at equestrian sporting events, one that is also honored in Germany. Congratulations to Ines Wallraff for going home with a timepiece from the Saint-Imier Collection as well as a beautifully sunny day at the races.

  • Longines - A passion for equestrian sports

    Press release

Longines FEI World Endurance Championships at Euston Park

Euston Park, Suffolk (UK) / Saint-Imier (Switzerland), August 26th 2012 - Held across 160km of land in the beautiful grounds of the Euston Estate, the seat of the Duke and Duchess of Grafton, and several local landowners, the championships were truly a test of skill and stamina for both horses and riders.

The event saw a star studded field of riders and horses tackle the course in a single day across terrain such as forest tracks, river meadows and open farmland. The individual winner of the Longines FEI Endurance Championships 2012 was His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on his horse Madji du Pont who completed the event in 7hr00min45sec with the UAE team winning gold followed by France and Oman respectively. Longines presented watches from the new Longines Saint-Imier collection to HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum as well as the four UAE team riders. Longines also presented a prize to the horse in the best condition after the race, won by Spanish competitor Ikland. The Longines Saint-Imier Collection has been inspired by the origins of Longines' watch-making tradition and the sleek lines and the distinctive lugs provide these new models with a subtle balance between classical and contemporary design.

Longines' passion for equestrian sports dates back to 1878 with the production of a chronograph engraved with a jockey and his horse. The Swiss watch brand has a vast experience in timing equestrian events. Seen on the racetracks in 1881 and extremely popular among jockeys and horse-lovers, this model, which enabled its user to time performances to the second, was already being used by most of the sports judges in New York as early as 1886. In addition, in 1926 the brand was appointed official timekeeper for the Concours Hippique International Officiel de Geneve for the first time. As an official partner and timekeeper at the Longines FEI World Endurance Championships, the famous Swiss watchmaker demonstrates a commitment to the world of equestrian sports, disciplines that represent its values of tradition, precision and elegance. For more than 80 years, Longines has taken part in over one hundred national and international equestrian events. The brand has established numerous partnerships around the world as timekeeper and partner of prestigious horse-shows and Longines' involvement in equestrian sport includes show jumping and flat racing as well as endurance.

Longines has been based at Saint-Imier, Switzerland, since 1832. It is celebrating 180 years of non-stop craftsmanship in 2012 and its watchmaking expertise reflects a b devotion to tradition, elegance and performance. It has generations of experience as the official timekeeper at world championships and as a partner of international sports federations. Over the years, the brand has built b and long-lasting links with the equestrian sports. Longines is a member of The Swatch Group S.A., the world's leading manufacturer of horological products. With an excellent reputation for creating refined timepieces, the brand, whose emblem is the winged hourglass, has outlets in over 130 countries.

  • Longines - Record amount for the Andre Agassi Foundation for Education

The Andre Agassi Foundation for Education raised more than $26.1 million, a record amount, at the 16th Grand Slam for Children benefit concert, in conjunction with its longtime partner and presenting sponsor, Swiss watchmaking brand Longines. A donation of $18 million from Kirk Kerkorian, $1.5 million from the Engelstad Family Foundation and $1 million from Windsong Trust combined with ticket sales and proceeds from a live auction accounted for the largest amount raised in a single night for the Andre Agassi Foundation for Education. The package including a weekend for four at the 2012 Kentucky Derby and a Longines Master Collection Moon Phases "Andre Agassi" special watch was auctioned for $90,000. The funds benefit the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy (Agassi Prep), a tuition free public charter school serving students in historical West Las Vegas.

"I am both astounded and humbled by the generosity and compassion of our community, the artists, sponsors, partners and donors," said Andre Agassi. "With b support from our presenting sponsor Longines, the Engelstad Family, Windsong Trust and a truly magnanimous gift from Kirk Kerkorian, this record- breaking evening will make a positive difference in students' lives as we continue to work to transform education."

Longines, represented by President Walter von Känel, was delighted to be for the first time the presenting sponsor of the Grand Slam for Children.

Held Saturday, October 29th at Wynn Las Vegas, the Grand Slam featured a star-studded lineup of performers including Michael Buble, Jimmy Kimmel, Martina McBride, Smokey Robinson and Train, with surprise appearances by Gladys Knight, Signature Group and comedian Jeff Ross.

A.J. Green, a graduate of Agassi Prep, performed a heartfelt introductory song and the school's drum line started the festivities for the evening.

The Grand Slam brings together international stars and noted artists- from music to comedy - to build awareness and raise money for the Foundation's biggest fundraiser. Dedicated to transforming and elevating education, the Foundation opened Agassi Prep in 2001. In 2009, the public charter school graduated its first senior class, with 100 percent of graduates accepted into college, as were the graduates of the classes of 2010 and 2011. The Foundation's work is directly impacting students in Las Vegas, Agassi's hometown community, but it has broader implications for education nationwide.

  • Longines - The Column-Wheel Chronograph Record

Longines has passed a new milestone in its exploration of timepieces fitted with authentic technical features by creating, The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph Record, which has a direct-drive second hand with a vernier scale. Back in 2008 the company used a chronograph movement with a column wheel in the design of a contemporary embodiment of its expertise in mechanical chronographs this new model showcases the horological development and elegant appeal in the same vein.

The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph Record combines various elements that make this brand-new watch a modern descendant of the timing instruments created by Longines in the past. Thanks to its exclusive column-wheel movement, it joins the lineage of equipment developed by the brand since 1878, when Longines produced its first chronograph. Moreover, The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph Record has a centre direct-drive second hand with a vernier scale - echoing a mechanical chronograph counter designed by the company in 1966. This system allows the user to read off the time measured easily and precisely using the position of the centre seconds hand with its vernier scale relative to the fixed scale on the dial. The centre direct-drive seconds hand with its vernier scale brings it into line with the most up-to-date mechanical timing equipment available today.

The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph Record has a sporty design which complements its chronograph functions. The self-winding movement is housed in a stainless steel case with a diameter of 41 mm. The cream or black dial has a 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock, a 12-hour counter at 6 o'clock, a small seconds at 9 o'clock and a date aperture between 4 and 5 o'clock. The hands are coated with Super-LumiNova while the red centre dragging seconds hand with its vernier scale is complemented by a fixed scale on the dial which enables the user to read off eighths of a second. Echoing the timing equipment produced by Longines in the 1960s, The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph Record is fitted on an elegant black alligator strap.

Fitted with 27 jewels, the L688.2 movement is a self-winding calibre with a diameter of 30 mm and a height of 7.90 mm. The column wheel which is part of the movement serves to steer the chronograph functions (start, stop, return to zero). This system, and in particular the column wheel that was designed by engineers at ETA on Longines' request, makes this mechanical chronograph exceptionally easy to use, requiring only a light pressure to start and stop the timing function and to return the hands to zero. The blued steel column wheel is a work of art and the whole movement is a stylised revamping of a traditional technical system. Apart from its sophisticated design, the construction of the L688.2 calibre has been especially created to meet the requirements of timing.

With its combination of timing functions and a beauty that is characteristic of timing equipment dating from the 1960s, The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph Record is a contemporary timepiece steeped in the great tradition of mechanical timing.

  • Longines - Les Elegantes

    Revue FH - 3 June 2010

The tastes of the 1920s are considered to be among the most important stylistic trends created in the 20th century. Their creative freedom and imagination helped to perpetuate a unique style within the Art Deco movement which exerted a marked influence even in watchmkaing during the 1920s.

As it does each year, Longines has sought inspiration in this artistic trend for creating elegant ladies' timepieces and is now presenting three new watches models inspired by the exuberance of the 1920s to make up its 2010 edition of Les Elegantes. The first is a rectangular watch in yellow gold, set on an elegant strap in black satin. The second, a delicate piece in rose gold, has a tonneau-shaped case that fits snugly on to a bordeaux satin strap. And the third is a graceful white gold model with an almond-shaped case and a white satin strap.
The cases of all three models have been hand-engraved in the Art Deco style and set with 24 to 42 diamonds. The Arabic numerals add a delicate charm to the silvered dials and blued hands. The brand has selected an authentic hand-wound movement dating from the 1970s for this elegant collection - the Longines L805 calibre, set with 17 rubies and beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour. This precious trio has been produced in a limited series of ten pieces only.

  • Longines - On the look out for future tennis champions

Sixteen children from all around the world will be playing in a mini-tournament leading up to an exciting mixed doubles final involving Gustavo Kuerten and Mary Pierce, who both won the French Open ten years ago. After this event, Longines will be continuing its support for disadvantaged children through its sponsorship of the charity foundations set up by Andre Agassi and Stefanie Graf, two of the brand's ambassadors of elegance. Finally, at a gala dinner a representative of the famous Swiss watch company will have the singular honour of presenting the Longines Prize for Elegance to a sportsperson whose commitment to helping those in need deserves recognition.

Longines has chosen to look to the future at Roland Garros this year by focusing on young tennis talent. In order to promote sport, respect for others, fair play and tolerance that the sport entails, the Swiss watch manufacturer will be hoping to find the tennis champions of tomorrow. In line with its slogan "Elegance is an attitude", Longines has become more and more involved in elegance in sport by supporting, as a first step, the charity foundations set up by Andre Agassi and Stefanie Graf, who are among its ambassadors of elegance. This year Longines will again be sponsoring the Andre Agassi Foundation and Children for Tomorrow, but also wants to help discover new young talent in the field of tennis by sponsoring promising players in the long term.

Longines will be inviting 16 children (8 boys and 8 girls between the ages of 10 and 12) from all around the world to come to Paris. Having been selected in their own countries on the basis of their tennis skills, these young hopefuls will play mixed doubles in a mini-tournament based on tie-break scoring. The children will be coached by Mansour Bahrami, who set up the Legends Trophy, as well as by Agnieszka Radwanska and Tsung-Hua Yang, who are also among Longines' ambassadors of elegance. The two winners of the tournament will then team up with Gustavo Kuerten and Mary Pierce for a show final that will take place on Saturday, 5 June 2010, on court no. 7. This match will give the children an opportunity to play alongside two tennis legends and to gain immeasurable experience: Gustavo Kuerten and Mary Pierce won the French Open ten years ago, walking away with the Musketeers Cup and the Suzanne Lenglen Trophy respectively. To reward and support the young victors, Longines will be offering them an annual stipend until they are 16 to help them to develop their tennis career. After the final, Longines will also be donating a cheque for $100'000 to the foundations set up by Andre Agassi and Stefanie Graf, which will be presented personally to two children from the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy in Las Vegas.

At the gala dinner on the Saturday of the weekend when the finals are held, Longines will have the honour of presenting an award to a sportsperson whose commitment to helping the needy deserves recognition. In awarding the Longines Prize for Elegance, the Swiss watch manufacturer will be paying tribute to a tennis player who has demonstrated true elegance in his or her heart.

Finally, Longines will also be taking advantage of the occasion to launch its Longines Admiral Chronograph Ceramic. The face of this magnificent self-winding, mechanical chronograph is surrounded by a black ceramic bezel and is a perfect example of beauty combined with performance. Longines' latest model in its line of elegant sports watches is mounted on a stainless steel bracelet whose central links are also in ceramic.

  • Longines - History 1900s - 1910s

1900s: Universal Exhibition in ParisPressing market demand with respect to both technology and styling drove watchmakers at Longines to design caliber L21.59. After the first Longines watch's 1867 bronze medal, in 1900 Longines caliber 21.59 won a Grand Prix at the Universal Exhibition in Paris with a one-of-a-kind creation called La Renommee, in 18K gold. The first wristwatches
When watches gradually migrated from waistcoat to wrist, Longines was in 1905 the first to turn out wristwatches by largely mechanical means. This innovation marked the start of a complete reorganization of the Longines' factory working and production methods during the 1920s and 1930s.1910s: The first shaped watchesAs early as 1912, Longines watches began to lose their round silhouette, the better to explore, and exploit, the geometry of elegance. Truly revolutionary for the period, Longines' rectangular and square-shaped models marked the start of a century of Longines design. Style followed style in any number of variations as taste turned into trend and trend into fashion, made possible by ever finer craftsmanship and sophisticated technologyLongines and gymnastics
Longines entered the world of gymnastics at the 1912 Swiss Federal Gymnastics Meet in Basel, Switzerland. The partnership resulted in a world's premiere: the introduction of automatic timing. Longines used an electromechanical system with start and finish tapes, fielded for the first time for the 80-meter dash. It marked a turning point in Longines' increasingly close cooperation with the world of gymnastics.
