    On Sunday 29 November 2015, Kenichi Ikezoe on Shonan Pandora crossed first the finishing line in front of a large audience at the Japan Cup in association with Longines. For this performance, Shonan Pandora's owner, breeder, trainer, jockey and stable staff members were awarded with elegant Longines watches by Mr. Walter von Känel, President of Longines, and Andre Agassi, Longines Ambassador of Elegance.

    Inaugurated in 1981, the Japan Cup in association with Longines is a 2400 meter international Group 1 turf race for horses aged three-years-old and up. The race day is named after the most important race held this day. The brand is once again involved in this equestrian event of international importance, as its Official Partner, Timekeeper and Watch.

    Longines has once again looked to its rich history to expand the military wing of its Heritage collection. The Longines Heritage Military COSD is based on a piece of equipment used by the British Special Forces during the 1940s. Each item of this equipment was marked with the initials COSD and intended for the sole use of the Combined Operations Command created by the British War Office during the Second World War.     Longines' passion for equestrian sports dates back to more than a century. In 1878, the Swiss watch brand produced a chronograph engraved with a jockey and his mount. The Longines Equestrian Pocket Watch Horses Trio 1911 was inspired by a metal pocket watch kept in the Longines museum and produced in 1911.

    This 18-carat rose gold pocket watch has a cleverly crafted background depicting a trio of horses.     Longines continues its tradition as timekeeper for equestrian sports and unveils a new model to add to its Conquest collection, the Conquest 1/100th Horse Racing, a silver faced range of the Conquest 1/100th.

    Longines, timekeeper for sporting performances since the end of the 19th Century, is launching a new line of watches that have been specially created for sports which require high precision timing. The Conquest 1/100th series responds to the needs of athletes, professionals and sports fans, besides many others, since it measures multiple intermediary times and has an intuitive analogue display that shows the time to
    one hundredth of a second using a separate hand.

    The Conquest 1/100th Horse Racing chronograph, which keeps time to one hundredth of a second, features a new unique quartz movement, the L440. This new model includes a microcontroller with a flash memory that allows the watch to be reset instantly and allows intermediary times to be recorded. With a diameter of 41 mm, this bright steel model has a silver face that displays hours, minutes, small seconds at 6 o'clock, the date and other

    This year, the surroundings of the Champ de Mars will host the Longines Future Tennis Aces 2014. 16 girls aged of less than 13 years and coming from 16 different countries will try to win the coveted reward: a great victory at an international tournament on the mythical Parisian clay.     This new product has been inspired by a metal Lepine pocket watch dating from 1927 and displayed at the Longines Museum in Saint-Imier.   • Longines - The Longines Column-Wheel Single Push-Piece Chronograph

    As part of the Longines Heritage Collection, The Longines Column-Wheel Single Push-Piece Chronograph models recall the very first chronograph wristwatches created by the brand in 1933. These timepieces housed the 13.33z calibre, the first chronograph movement made by Longines to equip wristwatches.

    The Longines Column-Wheel Single Push-Piece Chronograph model houses the L788 calibre, a monopusher movement developed by ETA exclusively for Longines and which, like its illustrious predecessor, is equipped with a column-wheel and measures 13¼ lines. All the chronograph functions can be controlled by simply pressing the single push-piece.

    The Longines Column-Wheel Single Push-Piece Chronograph comes in three versions, all with a 40 mm diameter. Two versions, one in steel and one in rose gold, feature Arabic numerals, and a third version, also available in steel, displays Roman numerals. The single push-piece, inserted into the fluted crown, recalls the original timepieces. The white dials are adorned with painted black numerals and a red "12", in a direct reference to the dials of the period. They are completed by two counters, at 3 and 9 o'clock, together with a date aperture at 6 o'clock and blued hands.

    The cases are a particularly interesting feature of these timepieces. Two of the models have a well-rounded case, available in steel and in rose gold. Taking its inspiration from an historic timepiece, the third model in steel is fitted with moving lugs. This version has a thicker case with a more angular profile. On all three versions, the movement's blue column wheel can be admired through the transparent sapphire crystal case back. All models of The Longines Column-Wheel Single Push-Piece Chronograph are fitted with a brown alligator strap.

  • Longines - La Grande Classique 100 Diamonds

    The 29 mm round case is set with 100 Top Wesselton VVS diamonds. On the model with the white mother-of-pearl dial, the baton shape hands are black. The dial is also adorned with 12 diamond indices.
     

    The Grande Classique 100 Diamonds features an ultra-slim case - only 4.60 mm. This profile has been achieved through the particular design of the case, which incidentally Longines has patented, whereby the back incorporates the lugs for the bracelet. 

    The timepiece is fitted with a quartz movement and is water-resistant to 30 meters. It is fitted either on black alligator straps with buckle or on steel bracelets with folding safety clasp and push-piece opening mechanism.

  • Longines - The Tachymeter Chronograph


    The Longines Tachymeter Chronograph features a technical tool initially introduced around 1811 to measure the hourly pace in assembly lines, as well as the velocity of the first modern means of locomotion: the tachymeter. To measure the hourly pace, the chronograph is started at the beginning of a task and stopped once the task is completed. The hand then shows the average production pace per hour. To find out the velocity of a subject, the chronograph is activated at distance zero and stopped once the distance of one kilometre has been covered. The hand then indicates the average velocity in units measured.


    The Longines Tachymeter Chronograph now combines in a very unique way the technical specifications of a tachymeter with the values of the brand, namely tradition, performance and elegance. The circular steel case with a diameter of 41 mm houses the caliber L688, a self-winding mechanical movement with a column-wheel chronograph mechanism exclusively developed for Longines, which can be admired through a transparent case back. The model features a date aperture at 4h30, a small second at 9 o'clock, a 30-minutes counter at 3 o'clock and a 12-hours counter at 6.
    Besides its extraordinary technical features, the model stands out with its remarkable design. The white lacquered dial is inspired by the one of a chronograph developed by Longines in 1934 and contrasts perfectly with the black Arabic numerals, the tachymeter scale in blue (1000 m) and red (100 m). A subtle touch of elegance is added to this model by its blued steel Breguet hands indicating hours and minutes and the blued steel counter-weight line pear hand indicating the seconds. To complete the traditional yet contemporary design of the model, it is mounted on an elegant black alligator strap.

  • Longines - The Longines Heritage 1968

    Located at the heart of the Longines head office in St-Imier, the Museum was completely refurbished in 2012 to mark the brand's 180th anniversary. It houses many treasures including a magnificent square timepiece that was the inspiration for the Longines Heritage 1968. The Longines Heritage 1968 is available in two sizes: 26 x 26 mm and 33 x 33 mm. The grey brushed dial features black, finely painted Roman numerals and a chapter-ring around the outside. A fine line of black varnish on the minute and hour hands echoes the lines of the numerals, providing a delicate contrast.
    While the square case is at first glance more classical, the Longines Heritage 1968 reveals an interesting profile with its slightly bevelled glass that protrudes over the middle. Moreover, the trapezium-shaped date aperture lends the watch a fresh, avant-garde air that contrasts with the more stringent lines of the case.  The watch is fitted with a mechanical movement, L595 and the whole is mounted on an elegant black alligator strap. Also available in steel.
     

  • Longines - Global Champions Tour in Monaco

    Title Partner and Official Timekeeper of the Longines Global Champions Tour, Longines partnered the Monaco leg of the competition and presented two of its major events: the Longines Pro-Am Cup on Friday, won by Mark McAuley riding Loriot and by Maddalena Valenzano Menada on Quidana, and the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of the Prince of Monaco on Saturday, the latter won by Richard Spooner on Cristallo followed by the riders William Funnell and Edwina Tops-Alexander.

    Kristian Haagen: Mr. Von Känel, Longines seem to be doing very well these days. Do you recall having experienced such a favourable period during your time as CEO for Longines?

    Walter von Känel: Well, in 2003 Longines sold watches for CHF 300 million and nine years later we sold watches for CHF 1.2 billion. In doing that I reached my target, as I wanted Longines to sell one million units in 2011 and to reach the one-billion Swiss franc mark in 2012.

    That makes Longines the fourth best-selling Swiss watch brand after Rolex, Omega and Cartier, with Tissot just behind Longines. We are the Swiss watch industry's billionaires.

    These are indeed impressive numbers, not least in light of the difference in prices compared to the top three brands…

    The entry level for Longines models ranges from CHF 700 to CHF 900. Our best-selling watches, which represent 45 per cent of our sales, are priced between CHF 1,500 and 3,000, while 12-15 per cent of our sales are in the CHF 3,000 - 4,500 bracket.

    What about the gender mix?

    Longines is a 50-50 brand, meaning we produce equal numbers of watches for men and women. Longines has always been big on "pairs" watches. This goes for all our collections, except of course the Dolce Vita and Prima Luna which is only offered as a ladies' watch.

    How does Longines meet the new challenges of the Swiss Made regulations?

    While there is a lot of confusion regarding these rumours, things are very clear for us at Longines. Right now the regulations require that 50 per cent of the watch should be assembled and/or produced in Switzerland. We (Editor's note:Swatch Group) will however be inventing heavily in case production machinery and my goal is to offer all Longines watches with a 60-40 percent ratio in terms of Swiss and Asian production. These figures, which does not include bracelets, but covers hands, dials, cases etc, are definitely reachable for Longines within just a few years. And we will produce at costs similar to current Asian production costs. Of course all our movements are already made in Switzerland (Editor's note: ETA).

    What has been your biggest achievement in your 25 years as president of Longines?

    Undoubtedly reaching the CHF billion mark that makes the brand a billionaire!

    Speed and precision are two words that perfectly describe this challenge. Roger Yves Bost with horse Castle Forbes Cosma have won the Longines Speed Challenge yesterday night at the Parc des Expositions, Paris Nord Villepinte. Gregory Wathelet (BEL) arrived second and Reed Kessler (USA) third. Created in 2010 by EEM World, the challenge facing competitors is to achieve the best time, with every bar knocked down adding a 2 second penalty. The winner is, therefore, the pairing that is both the quickest and the most precise. The format of the event ensures complete suspense, with the Longines Speed Challenge also being very attractive to the public, who can follow the time achieved by the competitors, in real time. Since they know the best time as the competitors leave the arena, each spectator can cheer on their favourite up to the end of the round.

Recalling Longines' rich history and its continued development across the ages, the various speakers - including Nick Hayek, President of the Executive Group Management Board of The Swatch Group, and Walter von Känel, Director of Longines - all emphasised the importance of the close ties that link the company to the town of Saint-Imier. Then Pierre-Yves Donze presented his latest work, Longines - From a Family Business to a Global Brand, which recounts the company's history. The other highlight of the day was the official reopening of the Longines Museum. The guests had the opportunity of discovering the various refurbished rooms where all Longines' historical treasures are on display.


    In 1832, Auguste Agassiz joined the world of watchmaking when he became an associate of a watch trading office installed in Saint-Imier - this was the start of the history of Longines. Today the company is celebrating its 180th anniversary in Saint-Imier itself, in the presence of 180 celebrity guests. In his welcome speech, the Director of Longines, Walter von Känel, recalled with some emotion the brand's rich history. With regard to the dev

    elopment of Longines within The Swatch Group, Nick Hayek, President of the Executive Group Management Board of The Swatch Group, said : « It has always been Longines' and the Swatch Group's strategy to invest in Saint-Imier in order to preserve the Swiss identity and the one of this valley ».The Mayor of Saint-Imier, Stephane Boillat, focused on the close links between Longines and the St. Imier valley, while the member of the Swiss Council of States, Philippe Perrenoud, emphasised the important role played by Longines and the Swatch Group within the canton of Berne.


    Subsequently, Pierre-Yves Donze presented his latest book, commissioned to mark the occasion and entitled Longines - From a Family Business to a Global Brand, which recounts the history of Longines, from its origins as a watch trading office to its present-day status as indeed a worldwide brandname. Describing economic and structural issues, as well as technical developments and innovations, this work presents the evolution of Longines through various key people and the strategic and political decisions they took which have shaped the company into what it is today.


    The welcome address was followed by the reopening of the Longines Museum. An initial room, dedicated to the history of the brand known by its winged hourglass logo, was opened in 1992 by the late Nicolas G. Hayek, founder and president of the SMH Group (today The Swatch Group). The entire museum has been refurbished this year, to mark the company's 180th anniversary, and offers visitors a coherent, structured presentation of all the different aspects of the history of Longines. At the opening ceremony a ribbon was cut by Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, President of the canton Jura Government, Philippe Perrenoud, member of the Swiss Council of States for canton Bern, Philippe Gnaegi, President of the State Council, along with the Mayor of Saint-Imier, Stephane Boillat and Walter von Känel, Director of Longines. The guests then had an opportunity to discover, or re-discover, the brand's treasures and heritage.

    Longines, the famous Swiss watch brand celebrating its 180th anniversary this year, is proud to have served on Sunday, 2 September for the second consecutive year as official timekeeper and title sponsor of the Longines Grosser Preis von Baden, the most important race in Germany. To round off this highlight of the "Grosse Woche", the brand awarded the „Longines Prize for Elegance" to the most elegant lady Ines Wallraff and presents „The Longines Saint-Imier Collection".



    16,300 spectators were present at this much anticipated high level event with a prize money of 250,000 Euros.

    Andrasch Starke convinced again and won this year's race on favorite Danedream, last year's winner of the Longines Grosser Preis von Baden and the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Second and third places went to Terence Hellier on Ovambo Queen and Adrie de Vries on Pastorius.

    True to its slogan - Elegance is an attitude - the Swiss watch brand was looking together with hat designer Olivier Mauge and Baden Racing on Iffezheim's racetrack for the most elegant lady, honored by a jury with the "Longines Prize for Elegance" and a precious ladies watch of the new "The Longines Saint-Imier Collection". The prize went to Ines Wallraff who delighted the jury with her exceptional feather hat.


    Also the numerous visitors on site had the opportunity to admire "The Longines Saint-Imier Collection", a series of exceptional timepieces equipped with mechanical movements. This collection is inspired by the origins of Longines' watchmaking tradition and the village of Saint-Imier, where Longines was founded in 1832. The shape of the case - inspired by a model dating from 1945 - is a common theme throughout the collection. With a diameter of 41 mm, the chronograph presented in Iffezheim is fitted with a column-wheel movement L688, developed and produced exclusively for Longines. Its case in steel displays a black dial.

    Children of Tomorrow works with children traumatized through war, violence and abuse and has offices in Hamburg. Kosovo and Eritrea. "Until today we have been able to reach and treat more than 8,000 children," Graf said during a press conference held at the Roland Garros Tenniseum.
    Rising Stars
    Additionally, Longines displays its fuzzy yellow heart for up-and-coming tennis players. The Longines Future Tennis Aces sees the Swiss watch company inviting 16 under-twelve tennis players who have worked their ways through grueling qualification tournaments to play the final draw on the grounds of Roland Garros during the second week of the French Grand Slam. This year, girls from Australia, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Britain and the United States competed there. The final, held on June 9 on Court 7, pitted Japan's Haruna Arakawa against Australia's Destanee Aiava - with the latter coming out on top.


    Not only did the finalists get to play additional exhibition matches with Longines ambassador Graf, world-ranked number 15 Sabine Lisicki and doubles specialist Mansour Bahrami, but both will receive an annual sum of $2,000 from Longines from now until their sixteenth birthdays to help pay for tennis equipment and costs.
    This day of dreams for the young tennis hopefuls ended with a press conference held in Roland Garros's tennis museum, during which Aiava received a Saint-Imier collection watch.

    Kent Farrington from the USA won the prestigious Longines King George V Gold Cup on his debut at The Longines Royal International Horse show. He withstood tough competition from runner-up and three-time Gold Cup winner Robert Smith (GBR) on Talan and Leon Thijssen (NED) on Tyson who came in third.

    Points won during the Longines Royal International Horse Show count towards the total score for the 2011 Longines Press Award for Elegance. The competition is divided into 5 stages; between each stage the horses are refreshed and checked by a vet to ensure that they are not over-exerting themselves.     As the official timekeeper for the World Cup Alpine skiing competitions organised by the International Skiing Federation (FIS) during the 2010-2011 season, Longines will be present on the slopes for a whole series of events to be held in Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Finland, France, USA, Italy, Norway, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Switzerland and Slovenia. This year the brand will be launching its Conquest Chronograph, a timepiece that combines all the technical characteristics required by the most demanding sportsmen and women. During the season all eyes will be on Longines Ambassador of Elegance, Aksel Lund Svindal, the Norwegian whose performance in 2009-2010 was truly remarkable.     The brand's long association with competitive skiing started in Chamonix in 1933. The winter contracts for timing international skiing events that followed gave Longines the opportunity to introduce many technological innovations, since each era has presented its own specific demands. Over time, the technical requirements in timekeeping have become much more stringent. For the men's downhill, for example, the FIS now requires five intermediate times and two speed measurements as well as the final time. In addition, all measurements must be to one hundredth of a second.


    During the 2010-2011 skiing season Longines will be launching its Conquest Chronograph, a model that perpetuates the spirit of conquest demonstrated by those who dared to go just that little bit further to reach new horizons. It is on the basis of this spirit of adventure and its own heritage that Longines has designed the Conquest Chronograph models. They aim to attract today's sportsmen and women, who demand efficiency and performance without sacrificing elegance.

  • Longines - The watch of the Expeditions Polaires Françaises


    In 1947 France instigated a series of exploratory missions to the Arctic and Antarctica under the leadership of a renowned scientist, Paul-Emile Victor. These expeditions brought together geologists, geodesists, meteorologists, physicists, biologists, geographers and glaciologists all were aiming to explore, study and understand the North and South Poles. The mass of equipment required by the first Paul-Emile Victor missions for exploring these inhospitable regions included four Longines ship's chronometers and fifteen Longines wristwatches which were used for determining their astronomical position. In honour of these exploratory missions the Swiss watchmaker has re-issued the time-piece used by the scientists on the Expeditions Polaires Françaises - Missions Paul-Emile Victor to explore Greenland and the Adelie Coast.

    In the second half of the 1940s, public opinion was fascinated by the most distant corners of the Earth, which aroused a passionate interest among many people. Like other countries, France set up a body for organising national scientific expeditions, namely to the Arctic and Antarctica. Paul-Emile Victor, an ethnologist and explorer who had already spent a good deal of time in Greenland during the 1930s, was mandated to create and manage the new office. Between 1947 and 1976 the Expeditions Polaires Françaises - Missions Paul-Emile Victor organised 150 trips to Greenland and the Adelie Coast, led by the ethnologist.

    A considerable amount of equipment was necessary for these expeditions in order to deal with the difficult conditions that prevailed in the inhospitable areas to which they were going. For example the expedition that left Europe in May 1948, took seven amphibious tracked vehicles, two Dakota aircraft, tractors, laboratory trailers, a mobile weather station, tents, sledges and 30 lorry-loads of supplies. For this exploratory trip the scientists also took four Longines chronometers, three being set to civil time and one to sidereal time. Fifteen members of the expedition wore stainless steel wristwatches made by Longines. These time-measuring instruments were intended primarily for determining the astronomical position of the expedition (they were also used for precise geodesic calculations). The reports on the performance of these timepieces written by the scientists who used them are a reminder of the crucial role such instruments played in scientific expeditions to the remotest parts of the world. By being part of these scientific expeditions in the mid-20th century, Longines also travelled northwards and southwards, to the two Poles.

    The Longines watch that the members of the Expeditions Polaires Françaises - Missions Paul-Emile Victor wore was a stainless steel wristwatch with a centre seconds. A centrally mounted second hand was still quite rare in the 1940s but apparently met the need for easy reading, as illustrated by the use of luminescent coating on the hour symbols, the numerals and the hands. A point of interest is that the Longines 12.68N calibre used in this model had an anti-shock device that was different from the standard feature in other Longines watches.

    Longines has decided to re-issue the timepiece that accompanied the scientists who took part in the Expeditions Polaires Françaises - Missions Paul-Emile Victor as a tribute to these expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctica to explore the remotest corners of our planet. The Longines Expeditions Polaires Françaises - Missions Paul-Emile Victor watch is an accurate reproduction of the instrument used at the time by the geologists, geodesists, meteorologists, physicists, biologists, geographers, glaciologists and film-makers that joined the expedition. Fitted with a self-winding mechanical movement, this model has a date aperture at 3 o'clock and a silvered dial with hour symbols and Arabic numerals, as well as hands coated in Super-LumiNova.     Longines sponsors the French Open for the fourth time and adds Gustavo Kuerten's charity to its list of tennis-related philanthropy in addition to young up-and-comers from all over the world.


    The sunny Thursday on Roland Garros's court 16 could not have been more exciting for 12-year-old Lauren Fishbein from the USA. Not only did she win her first-round match against Niki Chia of Singapore to advance to the semis of Longines's Future Tennis Aces competition, but she had the spontaneous pleasure of meeting her idol Serena Williams, who happened to be practicing on the next court. The girls' competition was eventually won by Russian Aleksandra Pospelova, who knocked Fishbein out. She and boys' winner Jaime Fermosel Delgado from Spain received not only a stipend of $2,000 per year for tennis equipment until they turn 18 and one of the Swiss manufacturer's watches, but also the chance to play in an exhibition doubles match with legendary tennis players Mary Pierce, Gustavo Kuerten, and Mansour Bahrami. The junior players exhibited extreme composure despite the exciting circumstances in front of approximately 400 spectators on Court 7 and a media conference held in Roland Garros's Tenniseum announcing the winners and Longines's involvement in Kuerten's Instituto Guga Kuerten, a charity that works with disadvantaged Brazilian children.


    The same evening Longines held a gala event at Paris's Musee Rodin in honor of Kuerten, who received the Longines Prize for Elegance for this year from brand ambassador and Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Kuerten, who exited the professional circuit prematurely before the age of 30 due to a back injury, is now exerting his considerable energy and resources to lead his charity and "give back" to underprivileged Brazilian children in the hopes of educating them and "giving them good feelings about life."
    The sponsorship of Kuerten's charity follows in the footsteps of Longines's commitment to Andre Agassi and Stefanie Graf's two charities as announced last year on the occasion of the tenth anniversaries of their respective wins at the French Open. Like Agassi and Graf at the 2009 French Open, Kuerten and Pierce—who is also currently launching her own charity for children—also won their French Open titles exactly one decade ago.


    Longines's longtime commitment to tennis and philanthropy continues to expand.
