  • Ralph Lauren - Sporting Collection

Inspired by Ralph Lauren's own love of travel and international exploration, the Ralph Lauren Sporting World Time watch offers a complication that is itself an invitation to travel. At the turn of a crown, 24 cities display the sequence of time around the globe and accompany you in journeying through the world of Ralph Lauren.

    Inspiration
In 1884, the International Meridian Conference in Washington decided to divide the Earth into 24 time zones, with the Greenwich meridian as longitude zero. In order to enable simultaneous readings of the time in several time zones, watchmakers have since devised and created a number of different horological complications. Among versions ranging from twin hour hands to world-time displays, the Sporting World Time features one of the most sought-after features in the watchmaking industry. With an engraved disc displaying all 24 time zones, the Sporting World Time model also offers a day/night indicator, a power-reserve display and a calendar. From New York to Paris, London to Hong Kong and Moscow to Tokyo, the Sporting World Time evokes the art of travel by allowing its owner to circle the globe at the turn of a crown.
The Sporting World Time offers a response to a growing interest and taste among citizens of the world for indulging in various leisure activities involving both sports and discovery. Subtly blending timeless elegance and functional attributes, the Sporting World Time is a long-distance traveling companion designed to reflect a perpetually moving world.

    Form & Functionality
The Sporting World Time watch offers a stainless steel version with an elegant yet relaxed look and feel. Enhanced by a bezel featuring six functional screws, this classic model is distinguished by a dial bearing Roman numerals and railroad-style minute track. This timepiece is crafted in a 45 mm stainless steel case water-resistant to 100 meters and fitted with a cobalt blue alligator strap and a matching pin buckle.

Combined with a day/night indicator, the watch simultaneously displays the local time and a second time zone selected from a disc engraved with the names of 24 cities. Its shimmering deep blue varnished dial is enhanced by a bright red second hand.

Beating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) and endowed with a 40-hour power reserve, the Caliber RL939 was developed by Jaeger-LeCoultre for Ralph Lauren.

St. Regis International Cup, Cowdray Park Polo Club

For the first time on British soil, in 15 years , Luke Tomlinson lead the British team to an 11 goal victory against the USA at Cowdray Park Polo Club for the first in the series of International matches in the UK.

England Fielded a 24 goal side with Ollie Cudmore (4 goal) Malcolm Borwick (6 goal) James Beim (7 goals) and Jaeger-LeCoultre ambassador and England Captain Luke Tomlinson (7 goals). It was a very close and well matched competition for the UK, which in the last remaining minuets saw Borwick snatch the ball from the opposition and find Tomlinson near the goal mouth- Captain luckily didn't miss and took England ahead to win the match by only half a goal.
England were presented by Her Majesty the Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup by Lord Cowdray.

Luke is certainly one of the most exceptional professionals on the international polo scene today. He's dedicated to perfection; he has true commitment and a real vision for shaping the future of the game. With his approachable character, understatement and integrity, Luke embodies the very best of British.

Luke is currently one of England's highest handicapped players (7 goals in the UK and 8 in Argentina) and has played in four Argentine Opens during his career and in 2004, 2006 and 2008 reached the semi-finals of the Camera.
Amongst his career highlights are beating Argentina in their own back yard at Palermo in 2002 and winning the Westchester Cup (England vs USA) in Florida in February 2009. He has won every major domestic trophy including the Queens Cup (2002, 2004 and 2009) as well as the Prince of Wales Trophy, the Argentine Club Cup and the famous Gold Cup all in 2003. This season Luke lines up for his second season with Nick Clarke's Salkeld team which last year reached the semi-finals of the Gold Cup.
"Jaeger-LeCoultre and the Reverso have real reason and relevance in the polo world. The watch is an example of classic, understated innovation and does the job with the minimum amount of fuss-thoroughbred quality not so dissimilar to my ponies. I like the brand because they focus on the development of the sport and the individual, not the surrounding image. It's real watches, real polo." Luke Tomlinson.

    Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre

  • Jaeger-LeCoultre - Unique Reverso customized by Zep

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Reverso, an iconic model of the Grande Maison in Le Sentier, Switzerland, Zep personalized a dial in enamel of a Reverso a eclipses in pink gold. This artistic execution will be issued as a unique piece. Zep, a renowned Swiss artist, drew his inspiration from a visit to the Manufacture last April.

Enamelling, along with engraving, is one of the rare crafts developed by Jaeger-LeCoultre. Today the enameling atelier located on the Manufacture's site comprises three persons. They perform a wide variety of personalization offers in enamel on the Reverso's case-back and also on the dials. These artists execute unique pieces using skills that combine tradition with the spirit on invention, developing new techniques that are revealed each year in the new collections.

The unique Reverso customized by Zep in enamel and pink gold will be auctioned by the Artcurial auction house on November 29, 2011 in Paris for the benefit of "Monaco Association against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy".
A long time ago, back in 1931, in a dusty vortex and to the accompaniment of horses' hooves hammering, an idea was born: a watch with a dial that could protect itself from shocks, all the while offering a personalized engraved case-back. Eighty years later, the Reverso, the one and only truly polo watch in the world, has progressed from watchmaking icon to cult status. The Grande Maison is honored to introduce the new creation to the public at a preview in the Veytay Polo Club in Switzerland during the finals of Jaeger-LeCoultre Polo Masters Geneva.

  • Jaeger-LeCoultre - A Reverso Watch for Charlotte Gainsbourg

A true icon of fine watchmaking, Reverso celebrates its 80th anniversary this year. While keeping its status as a reference, Reverso is revealed in a new light in the video of Charlotte Gainsbourg, a talented artist and a many-sided personality.

As a recording artist and live performer, Charlotte Gainsbourg achieved a considerable breakthrough in the U.S. with her Beck-produced album IRM and the tour that followed, her first-ever. When her next album—the Stage Whisper double LP of live and unreleased material—arrives this fall, it will (somehow) have been nearly two years since IRM came out. In the meantime, on September 6, Because Music / Elektra will release Terrible Angels EP, which features two unreleased studio tracks, two live recordings, and two videos.
Video Online Now on Youtube: http://youtu.be/bs1BNBstU1c
Terrible Angels EP includes: "Terrible Angels," written and produced by Beck; "Memoir," written by Conor O'Brien, produced by O'Brien and Renaud Letang (Feist); live versions of "IRM" and "Just Like a Woman," recorded on Gainsbourg's summer 2010 European tour; and videos for "Just Like a Woman"(live) and "Terrible Angels."

This is just a sampling of the material comprising Stage Whisper, which includes seven studio recordings and eleven live songs. Many of the studio tracks come from sessions for IRM, one of the most celebrated albums of 2010.
The New York Times called it "an engrossingly eclectic pop record and a kind of coming-out party: the first time that Ms. Gainsbourg the chanteuse has displayed the charisma of Charlotte Gainsbourg the actress."

Vanity Fair deemed the album "an enigmatic, varied, and sonically complex tour de force." In a four-star review, UNCUT lauded the album's "relentlessly forward-looking, hybridized pop vision." These new releases coincide with considerable acclaim Gainsbourg is receiving for her most recent collaboration with Lars Von Trier, Melancholia (2011).

  • Jaeger-LeCoultre - With Vasilis Orfanos at the Dakar Rally 2011

Jaeger-LeCoultre is supporting famous Greek motorbike rider Vasilis Orfanos during his 5th participation in the world's toughest car rally: the Dakar Rally 2011. For this extreme competition he is wearing the exceptional Master Compressor Extreme World Chronograph.

The Dakar Rally is the world's toughest and most demanding motorsports race. The 2011 edition is running from the 1st to 16th of January in the North of Argentina and Chile. The riders will cover a total 9,500km in extreme conditions. This is Vasilis Orfanos' 5th participation in the Dakar Rally. He is the only Greek who has ever won 1st place in the 400cc category, on his first participation in the Dakar Rally, in 2003.
Jaeger-LeCoultre is always searching for new means to exceed expectations, and the brand thus naturally decided to participate in such an extreme ride with its Master Compressor Extreme World Chronograph. Its Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 752 features an automatic chronograph combined with a world time function displaying simultaneously the time on the 24 different time-zones. It is the absolute sports watch, designed for extreme conditions and equipped with a patented shock absorber system protecting the self-winding chronograph movement from vibrations and jolts, even under the most extreme conditions such as heat, water and sand that the watch will be facing during the 16 days of the Dakar Rally.

Vasilis Orfanos has consistently demonstrated his dedication and passion to this Race. His courage and patience will help him in this extraordinary adventure that has started from Buenos Aires and will be trying once again this year to surpass his own limits.
Jaeger-LeCoultre and Vasilis Orfanos will thus be sharing this fantastic adventure that serves as a vivid reminder of the Manufacture's constant efforts to push the frontiers of precision and performance by taking part in outstanding ventures.

  • Watch Selection - Le Pont des Amoureux by Van Cleef & Arpels

    WORLDTEMPUS - 23 December 2010

"In effect, it is the dial that is the determining factor at Van Cleef & Arpels," Dominique Baron, the gifted master enameler that Van Cleef & Arpels collaborates with on its Poetic Complications line, told me earlier this year. "The creations by Van Cleef & Arpels effectively give another dimension to time because its representation across the Poetic Complication watches is above all an aesthetic one approaching more of an artistic oeuvre telling a story that one wears on the wrist rather than a watch."
This statement could not be more true. For most connoisseurs of fine watchmaking, however, this plays a minimal role. For such clients, it is exactly the other element that the brand has done so well in the line that makes this timepiece one of the (subjective) best to come out this year. The truly unique mechanics added to a caliber manufactured by Jaeger-LeCoultre can be attributed to Agenhor's Jean-Marc Wiederrecht — who is something of a mechanical poet at heart himself and an original specialist in the art of retrograde.
The Pont des Amoureux timepiece revisits the ideal of Paris already graphically seen in 2009's Journee a Paris: the fine lady on the left side of the dial counts the hours, while the gentleman on the right counts retrograde minutes. At midnight they meet for a brief kiss before the retrograde systems part them, immediately taking each back to the beginning of their respective scales.
This model differs from Van Cleef & Arpels's other Poetic Complications in that its dial makes one revolution in a 24-hour period, thus simulating one day rather than one year. This watch was justifiably voted the ladies' watch of the year at the 2010 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie last month.

  • Jaeger-LeCoultre - Portuguese Art of the Reverso

    WORLDTEMPUS - 8 October 2010

Portugal's awkward geographical location on the world map may ultimately justify its status as the first globalized nation during the age of discoveries in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Nevertheless, in the modern age the oldest state in Europe fails to continue this historical centralized role, particularly on its home continent where its only neighbor is Spain. That said, it is easy to believe that Portugal is condemned to follow the lead of others, particularly in the world of haute horlogerie, considering the main markets of central Europe are much closer to horology's Olympus: Switzerland. Nothing, however, could be farther from the truth.

Portugal possesses a deep tradition regarding the best that this art can deliver. Historically, the country was never interested in producing timepieces though it has played a central role in introducing them to other cultures like China and Japan. The deep understanding that many Portuguese collectors have of the details and attributes that make a watch exceptional continuously strikes me and may justify the unusual number of limited editions made by top brands that are exclusive to this market.
The Depiction of Time Through the Eyes of Four Portuguese Artists

At the beginning of this decade, a remarkable set of very collectible limited editions was introduced to Portuguese aficionados during a period of four years. These timepieces were based on the excellence of Jaeger-LeCoultre's timeless Reverso and a group of the most celebrated contemporary Portuguese artists; a challenge masterfully executed upon the initiative of the local distributor at the beginning of the new millennium.
In 2000, 74-year-old Júlio Pomar was invited to collaborate in the production of the first limited edition. Pomar had been the biggest Portuguese name in neo-realism, a style he cut ties with in the 1950s. A fevered opponent of the Portuguese dictatorship of Salazar, he fled to Paris, where he has lived since. It was on one of his frequent visits to Lisbon that he agreed to "draw time" for the first limited edition Art Reverso by Jaeger-LeCoultre. The fable of the tortoise and the hare provided an excellent philosophical subject upon which to base his creative prowess; the Reverso was just the right canvas for his talent. Produced in a set of only 30 pieces, the Pomar Reverso powered by Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 836 literally disappeared from the shop windows within just a matter of days, ensuring the success of the following three editions.

Cargaleiro was next in line. The painter, engraver and ceramicist produced an exclusive drawing comprising the geometry and colors of his personal interpretation of time; this was masterfully transferred to the white gold back of the Reverso by means of the traditional applied enamel technique. Again, a limited edition of 30 pieces was issued, quickly disappearing into the collections of a few lucky owners.

World renowned painter Paula Rego followed in 2003, creating a third edition with a drawing of a woman kissing a pelican as a representation of time. This is an image that depicts a certain sexual violence, which the artist explains as "something that happens eternally, since the beginning of time, as if a ritual: one dominates the other in eternal time. But when one talks about time, I usually also imagine an old man with a beard and a sickle. If it is a skull with a skeleton, then it represents death - but time is not a skeleton, it's a man…and this is how I imagine time." Although the subject is a polemic one, charged with an erotic and full of ambiguity, the creation was well accepted among critics and represented another success for the collection.
Finally, 63-year-old Jose de Guimarães, a true master of color and abstractionism, accepted the challenge of depicting time for the final edition of the collection. The stainless steel case of the Reverso Gran'Sport provided the frame, and the author engraved his signature directly onto its substructure. Guimarães was very keen on using steel because he considered it a democratic act that would allow this particular representation of his art to reach forty different people. Using a symbolic language that structures his artistic imagination, Guimarães chose the serpent as a representation of time, explaining that there are some cultures in Africa for which the reptile is the symbol of eternity. Blue was specifically chosen as it represents a good omen.

The Portuguese Art Reverso Collection by Jaeger-LeCoultre disappeared into the private ownership of a small group of enthusiastic collectors. Some of them were even able to acquire a set of the four models with the same limited edition number, providing additional value to their collection. Although several other local relevant limited editions by different brands have preceded and followed the Portuguese Art Reverso models, none has so far exceeded the confluence of artistic virtuosity they have come to represent.

  • H.Moser & Cie - Heinrich Moser

Heinrich Moser was born on 12 December 1805 and grew up in a Schaffhausen watchmaking family. Both his grandfather, Johannes Moser (1730-1820), and his father, Erhard Moser (1760-1829), worked as town watchmakers in the town by the Rhine Falls. He learned the traditional watchmaker's craft from his father between 1820 and 1824, and went on to broaden his knowledge after 1824 in the master watchmakers' workshops in LeLocle (Switzerland). He had already come to recognize the restrictions imposed by the guild regulations, and he was a vehement opponent of these. At the same time, however, he did not ignore the quality-promoting aspects of these regulations, and he was even responsible for improving them. He rapidly gained respect as a skilled watchmaker, and he was able to start a successful small business to supply spare parts. It only took Moser about eighteen months to develop a reputation as an outstandingly talented specialist, and he received offers of work from Italy and Paris. From 1826, he was able to work for the first time on his own account for a German merchant, for whom he built clocks into cases and pieces of furniture. In November 1827, the prospect of good business drew him to St. Petersburg in Russia, where in 1828 he opened H. Moser & Co. This marked the hour of inception of what would eventually grow into such a successful brand.Moser's business flourished, which was certainly attributable to the painstaking care that he took throughout his life to ensure that the watches sold by him were supplied to a high quality standard. Not a single watch was allowed to pass over the shop counter unless it had been inspected personally by him or one of his representatives. In order to maintain this demand on superior quality, he established a watch factory in LeLocle in 1829, which produced watches exclusively for his businesses in Europe and Russia. The building that was home to the company exists to this day.The range of Moser watches grew to include 70 different calibres. In addition to the movements supplied by his own factory, he also purchased movements from such renowned companies as Urban Jurgensen or Jaeger-LeCoultre. The latter's company archive lists him as a customer from 1860 onwards. From them he procured up to 64 different calibres, of which 24 complications. The uncompromising quality of his watches gained him access as a supplier to the Imperial Russian Court, various royal houses and the armed forces. Within just a few years, he was selling watches to Japan, China and Persia, but also in the West in Paris and New York. Business continued to thrive, even in times of crisis, and Moser, who was by now a prosperous merchant and watch manufacturer, decided to return to Schaffhausen with his family at the end of 1848.From this point on, he would see his true life's work as the transformation of Schaffhausen, a very quiet town in those days, into a lively and attractive industrial location, which also had room for a watch production facility. At the same time, he set about the construction of the magnificent Charlottenfels manor house for his family. In 1851 he completed the construction of a canal on the Rhine, which supplied the water to drive a turbine with an output of about 80 h.p. This was followed in 1853, in a joint venture with other personalities from Schaffhausen, by the establishment of the "Schweizerische Waggonfabrik bei Schaffhausen" (Swiss Wagonworks at Schaffhausen) and, in the same year, the establishment of the "Schweizerische Industriegesellschaft (SIG) Neuhausen" (Swiss Industrial Company Neuhausen). Moser was a co-founder of the railway line Schaffhausen-Winterthur, also in 1853. Subsequent additional participations, company formations and co-financing of company formations during this period can also be attributed to his tireless involvement. In the winter of 1863/64, he embarked on the construction of the largest Swiss dam over the Rhine, with the intention of supplying neighbouring industrial companies with inexpensive energy via a power transmission system. The turbines fed their energy into huge wire cable transmission systems, which then supplied it directly to a very wide range of production halls and workshops. This hydroelectric power station marked the dawn of the industrial age in Schaffhausen. In spite of the recognition which Moser now enjoyed in Schaffhausen, he was still not untouched by disappointments. He never got over the fact that his only son, Henri Moser (1844-1923), showed no inclination to join his father's watch company, let alone to succeed him at the helm.Heinrich Moser died on 23 October 1874. His second wife, Fanny, in accordance with his last will, inherited all his business interests. This made her one of the wealthiest women in Switzerland, although she had no desire to accept responsibility for what had by now become a global watch business. She sold the entire Russian operation to the local Managing Director, Mr Winterhalter, in 1877. The watch factory in LeLocle went to Paul Girard. It was stipulated in the contracts of sale that all successor companies would continue to operate in perpetuity under the registered brand names of H. Moser & Cie. or Heinrich Moser & Co.Heinrich Moser remains omnipresent to this day in Schaffhausen. The house in which he was born in the old town still exists, as does Charlottenfels. The modern Schaffhausen generating station today stands on the site of the historic dam on the Rhine. A large number of the businesses formed by him or with his help are still operating successfully. The residents of Schaffhausen have themselves honoured their famous fellow citizen with the eponymous Moserstrasse, with a bronze bust in the Mosergarten park that is used as a venue for events and, not least, by opening Charlottenfels to the public.
