  • IWC - Laureus Charity Night

"At this most important of our fundraising events, donations came to another impressive sum. The funds we generate ensure that we will be able to offer support in the future to important social projects like Laureus Girls in Sport, Laureus Street Soccer or our programme for the integration of young people with disabilities," said Evelyn Fankhauser, General Manager of the Laureus Foundation Switzerland.

As part of the ninth Laureus Charity Night which took place on the 22nd of November in Zurich, 600 prominent figures from the worlds of sport, business, politics and show business collected donations totalling CHF 1.1 million. Among the items that went under the hammer were an exclusive Portuguese Tourbillon Mystere Retrograde Unique Piece Laureus Charity Night from IWC Schaffhausen (CHF 150,000) and a 1960 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL W21 (CHF 300,000). Many big names were invited to the exclusive gala evening. They included athletics legend Edwin Moses, triathlon world champion Jan Frodeno, racing cyclist Fabian Cancellara, football coach Roberto Di Matteo and American soul singer Aloe Blacc, who was also the evening's star turn.

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation was founded in South Africa 15 years ago. In 2007, IWC and Mercedes-Benz Switzerland jointly set up the Laureus Foundation Switzerland. In the past few years, they have generated over CHF 10 million in donations. The charitable institution uses the power of sport to promote personal development and the integration of socially, economically or otherwise disadvantaged children and young people into society. Among other things, it also puts its ambas- sadors from the world of sport at the highest level into contact with young people to show them the possibilities for a brighter future.

  • IWC Schaffhausen - Portofino Midsize Automatic Day & Night

The new Portofino Midsize Automatic Day & Night with a 24-hour day/night display and a second time zone combines discreet luxury with the urbanity of a modern and mobile generation.

While the hour, minute and seconds hands display local time, the blue hand on the inner 24-hour ring shows the time at a second location of the wearer's choice. To make reading the time in the second location easier, the lower half of the ring, from "6 a.m." to "6 p.m.", is white, while the top half, from "6 p.m." to "6 a.m.", is blue, allowing the wearer to easily differentiate between day and night. This dark blue, which is also used for the fourth hand, is accentuated against the shimmering white mother-of-pearl dial. The crown provides a fast, simple means of setting the time separately on the dial and in the inner 24-hour ring. Pulling the crown out to a specific position allows the user to set the hour and minute hands after arriving in a new time zone. The small blue hand remains in position and continues to show the time back home. When required, the crown can be pulled out
to a second position that allows the hand to be adjusted backwards and forwards in one-hour steps.

The watch features a red gold (Ref. IW459102) or stainless-steel (Ref. IW459101) case, combined with a black or dark blue alligator leather strap. It is also available with a Milanaise mesh bracelet in stainless steel or 18-carat red gold. The bezel, set with diamonds and the white mother-of-pearl dial ensures that its wearer cuts a fine figure no matter what the time. Supplying the power is the 35700-calibre mechanical movement with a 42-hour power reserve.

  • IWC - Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph "Ocean Racer"

The Volvo Ocean Race is back. From the start in Alicante in October 2014 to the final destination in Gothenburg in June 2015, seven teams will be battling for victory under the most extreme conditions. IWC Schaffhausen will be at the heart of the world's toughest offshore race as Official Timekeeper for the second time, and celebrates the event with a special edition: the Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph "Ocean Racer", limited to 1,000 watches. IWC is also consolidating its partnership with the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team, which is taking part in the race for the second time, too.

This year's round the-world race sees the first appearance of a one-design boat class: the Volvo Ocean 65, which measures over 20 metres in length. For the first time in more than 10 years, an all-female crew will be taking part, with crewmembers from all over the world. In the course of a trial of endurance lasting nine months, the teams will make nine stopovers and one pit-stop and cover a total of 38,739 nautical miles, or 71,745 kilometres.

Befitting the unique sporting challenge, the new Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph "Ocean Racer" (Ref. IW390216) is a distinctly masculine sports watch. "We're dedicating this watch to the teams' sporting spirit and their commitment to extreme racing," says Georges Kern.

The levels of precision which are on a par with those of nautical instruments are part of the genetic make-up of any member of the Portuguese family. This manifests itself not least in the large size of the case - 45.4 millimetres- and the IWC-manufactured 89361-calibre movement, featuring a flyback function and aggregate timing of up to 12 hours, shown by an analogue display with two hands in a subdial. This timepiece is water-resistant to 6 bar and is the only Portuguese model with crown protection as well as luminescent hands and indices.

In an allusion to extreme sailing, the 360-degree rotor is modelled on a ship's wheel. The timepiece is supplied with a black rubber strap featuring an alligator leather inlay.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing puts to sea again
IWC Schaffhausen has renewed its commitment as official sponsor of the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team, which took part in the last race as the first Arab challenger in the history of the Volvo Ocean Race. Two-time Olympic silver medal winner Ian Walker is once more in charge at the helm.

  • IWC - The discreet partner of F1

"I see myself as an engineer. I love details and the sum of many small and beautiful details and precise mechanics. This goes for racecars as well as watches. It´s all about superb technology, which is truly fundamental," Aldo Costa, the engineering director of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team told me in Monaco before the textbook victory of Nico Rosberg.
On his wrist he wore an IWC Ingenieur. Ingenieur for engineer, if you like. And the reason behind this homological choice is the relationship between Mercedes AMG Petronas and Swiss watch manufacturer IWC.

The partnership with the famed F1 team was revealed during the SIHH watch fair in January 2013, but the ties between the two brands actually goes back to 2004, when IWC launched a titanium Ingenieur marking the brand's relationship with AMG. Besides having three letters in their logotype, the two companies did not apparently have much in common other than an impressive mechanical engine.
    Not in your face

The 2013 partnership between IWC and Mercedes AMG Petronas actually makes a lot more sense than one might initially think, as a lot more engineering goes into a Formula 1 car than a tuned road car. However, do not expect IWC to plaster the F1 cars nor drivers' suits with their logo.
"We don't want to be 'in your face' with this relationship," Benelux and Scandinavian general manager Robert Pennatz tells me. "We would rather invite people on a journey into the brand. We would rather have consumers research IWC once they become aware of its partnership with the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team."

With everybody carrying a Smartphone with a decent camera, anybody can be a paparazzi and if any of the thousands of F1 fanatics that visit the annual 18-20 races around the world passes the Mercedes AMG Petronas garage, they will see most of the busy and highly skilled staff wearing an IWC Ingenieur on their wrist. Doutbless a few pictures of these wrists will be shot and shared within seconds on various social media. And hey presto, an emotional connection is made between a winning F1 team and a luxurious Swiss watch manufacturer.
    Watches and engines

Wearing a watch while working on an F1 engine worth millions is not a common sight, least of all a luxury watch. However the IWC Ingenieur is not only a luxurious watch but also a sturdy timepiece that was originally made to withstand magnetic fields such as can be found in engines. Such was the original thinking when the first IWC Ingenieur was launched in the 1950s and later redesigned by the legendary Gerald Genta in 1976. Genta's design is indeed the design upon which the current Ingenieur family is based.

    Grounded pilots

Both this year's Monaco Grand Prix winner Nico Rosberg and his fast team mate Lewis Hamilton are signed as IWC ambassadors and we'll undoubtedly see them wear different watches from the Schaffhausen manufacturer, including a Big Pilot model. The two racing drivers are after all themselves 'pilots', viewing the world in front of them from the confines of a specially small cockpit.
However Lewis Hamilton told me that he would love to see IWC launch a watch made of carbon. Guess what, Mr. Hamilton? We have great news for you. Such a watch already exists: the Ingenieur Automatic Carbon Performance ref. 322401 and 322402. They may be boutique only versions, but undoubtedly IWC will be able to help the new ambassador out.

  • IWC - "Le Petit Prince" sold for CHF 173,000

Seventy years following the first publication of "The Little Prince", the most successful work by Antoine de Saint- Exupery, IWC Schaffhausen has again made a special contribution to supporting the Antoine de Saint-Exupery Youth Foundation.
The unique piece Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition "Le Petit Prince" in platinum was among the timepieces under the hammer at the Sotheby's Geneva recent auction of Important Watches. The unique Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition "Le Petit Prince" in platinum (Ref. IW502801) was sold for CHF 173,000. Together with the Antoine de Saint-Exupery Youth Foundation, IWC is using the proceeds to support the construction of a school with a library in Cambodia, thereby contributing to the fight against illiteracy.
"This auction is a sign of our respect for the Foundation's commitment to fighting illiteracy. As a globally successful company, we take our social responsibility seriously and have since 2006 maintained a collaborative relationship with Saint-Exupery's heirs and the Antoine de Saint-Exupery Youth Foundation, which is based on the humanistic values of the renowned pilot and author," comments Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen, regarding the auction.
Olivier d'Agay, great-nephew of Antoine de Saint-Exupery and Director Saint-Exupery - d'Agay Estate, is delighted with the result of the auction: "Not only did the highest bidder acquire a precious unique timepiece, they can also rest assured that their contribution will be put to good use. With the proceeds of the auction we will help provide Cambodian children with a school education and thus a better future. Reading is key to their development and self-realization." The Foundation works closely with the non-governmental organization Sipar, which combats illiteracy in Cambodia. More than 200,000 children have benefited from access to books and literacy activities through the creation of libraries and education centres.
Mobile libraries bring reading material to remote areas, and every month Sipar publishes books in the national language Khmer, including "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Thanks to this cooperation and with the support of IWC Schaffhausen, a new school building with five classrooms and a library is currently being built in the village of Roluos in the province of Siem Reap. The school is scheduled to be opened in spring 2014. "Without the commitment of b partners such as IWC Schaffhausen, we would be unable to fulfil our mission," emphasizes Olivier d'Agay. "IWC has close links with the world of aviation, and shares the values of Saint-Exupery. We are working together to help young people to build their own futures, and encourage them to take responsibility and adopt an active role in society. We are delighted to be able to offer young people a perspective for the future thanks to the significant proceeds from this auction," adds the great-nephew of the world-famous author.

  • IWC - The Legend Of The Silver Arrow

To mark the occasion, IWC invited around 100 prominent guests, including car enthusiasts from the worlds of Swiss business, politics and the media, to The Dolder Grand Hotel in Zurich. The star attraction of the evening, much to the delight of the assembled guests,  was a vehicle that has gone down in the annals of motorsport and laid the foundations for that legend: the Mercedes-Benz W 25. The vehicle set up the course record in 1934 and came in for a pit stop in Zurich on its journey back to the course on the Klausen Pass in central Switzerland.  "For decades, IWC has carved out a name for itself with its passion for outstanding engineering and technical achievement combined with precision of the highest order. These are attributes that unite us with motor sport in general and more especially with the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team, of which we are the Official Engineering Partner. Both partners are keenly aware of their roots and their historic legacy. And our decision to send the Mercedes-Benz back to the Klausen Hill Climb is a tribute to the birth of the Mercedes Silver Arrow." explained Linus Fuchs, IWC Managing Director Switzerland.
From the moment they entered the foyer of The Dolder Grand, guests were transported back to the 1920s and 1930s - the era of the original Klausen Hill Climb races. Countless mementos of the time, including breathtaking black-and-white photographs and film footage, the original poster - a painting - for the race in 1934, Rudolf Caracciola's registration, the Mercedes-Benz W 25's victoryin 1934 and the original timekeeping equipment.  An exhibition dedicated to the Silver Arrow provided an introduction to the IWC Schaffhausen Ingenieur watch line tradition. Guests also had a unique opportunity to watch an IWC watchmaker at work. The designer engineers at IWC Schaffhausentook were inspired by the W 25 when they relaunched the Ingenieur watch collection in 2013 and they dedicated one particular timepiece to a vehicle with a glittering past: the Ingenieur Chronograph Silberpfeil (Ref. 3785).
Well-known Swiss presenter Rainer Maria Salzgeber was MC for the evening's festivities and chatted to Linus Fuchs and Michael Bock, Head of Mercedes-Benz Classic, about the background to the team's entry in this year's Klausen race. Michael Bock gave a fascinating insight into the complex business of preparing a historic and extremely valuable racing car like the Mercedes-Benz W 25 for its return to motorsport. Fritz Trumpi, the man behind the 11th International Klausen Hill Climb, and automobile historian Urs Paul Ramseier treated the audience to more details about the car's background together with a wealth of exciting anecdotes. The absolute highlight of the evening, however, was the moment when the wraps were lifted to reveal the W 25 with the characteristic silver aluminium bodywork that earned this vehicle the nickname "Silver Arrow". The W 25 on display is the last roadworthy model in the series and at the same time the jewel in the crown of the Mercedes-Benz Classic collection.
The Mercedes-Benz W 25 of 1934 was meticulously prepared for its return to the Klausen Hill Climb at the Mercedes-Benz Classic workshops in Stuttgart. Almost eighty years after its victory on the Klausen Pass and RudolfCaracciola's record-breaking time of 15:22.20 minutes, IWC Schaffhausen and the registration of the IWC Mercedes- Benz Classic have paved the way for the return of this magnificent vehicle. Between 1922 and 1934, the world's top racing drivers gathered in central Switzerland to battle it out at hair-raising speeds on the 21.5-kilometre gravel road to the top of the Klausen Pass. After its stop-off at The Dolder Grand, the Mercedes-Benz W 25 resumed its journey to the starting line for the 11th International Klausen Hill Climb, which brings together racing greats from present and past. One of the stars of the event is sure to be Roland Asch, German hill climbing champion and twice DTM runner-up. Though Asch is now retired from his career as a racing driver, his passion for motorsport and racing cars remains undiminished. As one of the few individuals who know how to drive a Mercedes-Benz W 25, he will be wearing the number 65 for the IWC Mercedes- Benz Classic team, just as Rudolf Caracciola did in 1934.

  • IWC - On Sardinia with the Mannschaft

The IWC Schaffhausen ensured a good atmosphere once again in the team in the training camp of the German national football team on Sardinia before the European Championships 2012 in Poland and Ukraine. A watchmaking course enthused the footballers in Geneva before the world championships 2006. This time, focus was on a folding kayak contest made possible by the IWC within the scope of the PR partnership between IWC Schaffhausen and the German Football Association (DFB). Initially, the national players assembled the folding kayaks. They had an exciting race afterwards off the Sardinian coast. The Big Aviator Watch Edition DFB of the Swiss watch manufacturer was the reason for pleasant anticipation among the national team. It is already the third time that IWC Schaffhausen manufactures the "OFFICIAL WATCH OF THE GERMAN FOOTBALL NATIONAL TEAM.

It was a great afternoon at the beach near Porto Cervo on Sardinia when the German national team gathered together for the IWC Team Challenge. The wives and children of the players as well as the coaches of the DFB team were the spectators. Oliver Bierhoff, National Team Manager, talked about an interesting experience: "It has been a physically active afternoon which was a lot of fun and will remain in the best memories of everybody."
Under the guidance of the specialists of Klepper, the leading manufacturer of folding kayaks from Rosenheim, Germany with more than hundred years of tradition, the national players started highlymotivated and highly-concentrated. According to the motto "assemble and depart", a kayak was built in just under 20 minutes suitable for almost any waters. It is stable, unsinkable and non-tilting - and easy to paddle. The environmentally-friendly folding kayak by Klepper is primarily composed of natural materials such as wood, cotton and rubber.

The national players proved with the boat that they are not only familiar with the handling of a football in any situation, but they can also glide over the water when the waves are right. "Our team also proves at other sports activities that they are able to meet interesting challenges in an impressive manner" commented Joachim Loew, Team Coach of the National Team, with a laugh afterwards.
Henrik Ekdahl, Managing Director of IWC Northern Europe, wished the German national team within the scope of the event a good preparation time and great success at the European Championships: "It is a tradition since 2006 that IWC makes it possible that the German national football team can participate in activities within the scope of the World Championships and European Championships training camps which exceed a pure athletic preparation and provide the players with special experiences and new insights."

After a watchmaking course in Geneva 2006 which provided the team with insights into the world of mechanical watches, they had the opportunity on Majorca in 2008 to experience the fascination of flying on a sightseeing flight with a more than 60 years old Ju 52. Now, the national players faced the challenge at the training camp on Sardinia to assemble a folding kayak by Klepper in teams of three and to prove on the ocean afterwards that one can cover a challenging route as quickly as possible with team spirit, discipline, endurance and physical fitness.

  • Porsche Design - P'6780 Diver

    WORLDTEMPUS - March 31st 2010

Hang on. Isn't that...it must be...the Eterna KonTiki Concept Diver? Introduced at Baselworld in 2005...right? But the logo emblazoned across it says...Porsche Design. "The design fit the Porsche Design collection far better," Yolande Perroulaz of Porsche Design and Eterna explained, when Worldtempus asked about the obvious similarity.
Right she was, of course: Porsche Design is a sportier brand compared to Eterna—even if Eterna's impressive horological history does account for a crazy Norwegian and a raft made of Peruvian timber back in the 1950s.
When Ferdinand A. Porsche introduced his first wristwatch back in 1972, it was a black PVD-coated model saluting speed, hence the mechanical chronograph function. Later, in 1980, he introduced the first titanium mechanical chronograph, Ref. 3700. This particular watch—and other models—were produced in collaboration with IWC. This was a fruitful relationship that ended when Porsche Design acquired Eterna in 1995 making the production services of IWC no longer necessary.

The P'6780 Diver is the first Porsche Design diver's watch since 1983's Ocean 2000 and 500 models, both titanium and both designed for divers of the German Navy—and both making headlines for the innovative design studio located in the picturesque Austrian town Zeel am See.
Today the 46.8-millimeter P'6780 Diver powered by an ETA 2892-A2 caliber is the talk of town: water-resistant to 1,000 meters and crafted in a combination of shot-blasted stainless steel and titanium. Securely anchored within a titanium bridge structure is a hinged steel container that can be raised to set the time and securely lock the rotating bezel. This design is no different from the Eterna KonTiki Concept Diver introduced in 2005.

However, the dial layout, hands, position of the date, slightly larger release buttons and other small, but distinctive details, greatly differentiate the P'6780 from the Eterna version, making the Porsche Design version of the innovative "hinged container" watch look more sporty and sturdy. And, yes, it does indeed fit the Porsche Design collection far better than its more traditionally classic sister brand.
The Porsche Design P'6780 is expected to hit retailers' shelves this summer with a suggested retail price of 9,500 Swiss francs.
