It was first unveiled in the mid-1970's — and - for those true watch lovers - it was originally designed by the legendary Gerald Genta, who revolutionized the appearance of modern watches with uncomplicated technologically inspired designs. For the IWC Schaffhausen Ingenieur SL, he brought the bores for the screws that hold the bezel in place, to the forefront- making them a design element and the hallmark of the line.

Over the years, IWC has added some revolutionary pieces to the Ingenieur collection, and this year, the brand unveils the newest recreations - geared for admirers of sophisticated, high-performance in-house IWC movements. The completely remodeled 2013 Ingenieur watch collection focuses on the brand's new partnership with the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One™ team. For the next 3 years, IWC is the Official Engineering Partner of the Mercedes-Benz works team, and for this year's unveiling the inspiration is from Formula One.

The materials used in the new collection - as in motorsports - are ceramic, carbon fiber, titanium -all of which underscore the pure, functional and technical richness of the Ingenieur. One of the key watches in the collection is the patented Ingenieur Constant-Force Tourbillon (Ref. 5900) in a platinum and ceramic case. Also a destined winner is the Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month watch cased in titanium aluminide.

On the sportier race-related side, outstanding new pieces include the limited Automatic Carbon Performance (with a case and dial made of epoxy resin-soaked carbon fiber matting), as well as the Ingenieur Chronograph Racer (shown here and retailing for  $13,100)  and the Ingenieur Chronograph Silberpfeil (Ref. 3785) - both perfect for recording periods of time, pit-stop times and, with the help of the tachymeter scale, the speed achieved over a measured distance. The Racer features the engraving of a modern Formula One™ car, while the Ingenieur Chronograph Silberpfeil revives the legend of the historic Mercedes-Benz racing car. The silver-colored circular graining on the dial is a tribute to the legendary Silver Arrow W25, whose instruments were placed on a dashboard with a circular-grain decoration.
