  • IWC - Big Pilot's Watch Edition "Patrouille Suisse"

For decades, the pilots of the Swiss Air Force display team have been wowing international air show crowds with the precision and perfection of their formation flying.

The Big Pilot's Watch Edition "Patrouille Suisse" is the ideal companion for ambitious high-flyers. This special edition, presented in grey, is with a case of blasted stainless steel featuring the characteristic design elements that make this professional timepiece for pilots instantly identifiable. This timepiece is integrated with the 51011 caliber, the largest automatic movement manufactured by IWC. Within no time at all, the spring-mounted rotor and Pellaton pawl-winding system build up a power reserve of over 7 days, and after exactly 168 hours the movement is mechanically stopped by an ingenious train in the power reserve. Stopping the movement before all the tension in the spring has been exhausted eliminates the danger of diminishing torque in the mainspring. This ensures the same level of accuracy the whole time the watch is running. The power reserve display at "3 o'clock" provides a reliable indication of the time remaining until the movement comes to a stop. A special feature of the Big Pilot's Watch Edition "Patrouille Suisse" is the small seconds at "9 o'clock", symmetrically opposite the power reserve display. The date display is at "6 o'clock" as usual. The 46-millimetre case encloses a soft-iron cage that protects the movements against extreme magnetic fields.

The design of the Big Pilot's Watch Edition "Patrouille Suisse" is inspired on IWC's 52 T.S.C. Big Pilot's Watch of 1940, style icon of all classic pilot's watches. A clearly organized dial, the arrowhead index at "12 o'clock" and the bold, luminescent numerals and hands guarantee minute-perfect legibility of the time regardless of lighting conditions. The Big Pilot's Watch is the only model made by IWC Schaffhausen to feature such an imposing crown - a reminder of those pioneering days of aviation. The current stainless steel variant is rounded off by an anthracite-coloured wristband of embossed calfskin with a folding clasp.

The case back features an engraving of three jet planes resembling the Northrop F-5E Tiger II - the planes the Patrouille Suisse pilots use to perform their aerial displays. The inscription "Tribute to Patrouille Suisse" and the consecutive numbering on the case back indicate the exclusivity of this special edition limited to only 250 pieces.

The Big Pilot's Watch Edition "Patrouille Suisse" will be available from September 2015 at IWC boutiques in Switzerland and from Swiss retailers, then later at IWC boutiques worldwide.

  • IWC - Securing the future of the Galapagos

It is a sobering thought that the research station set up by the Charles Darwin Foundation in 1964 to preserve and protect the Galapagos Islands faced an uncertain future only a few years ago. But, thanks to the intervention of a German investor, Swen Lorenz, and a major partnership with IWC Schaffhausen, the organisation has been turned around and is going from strength to strength.

The Research Station, which is home to around a hundred scientists, students, teachers and volunteers, has helped prevent the extinction of the islands' legendary giant tortoises and preserved 95 per cent of the astonishing biodiversity that Charles Darwin discovered when he first set foot there on 15th September 1835.

Watchmaker IWC also celebrates a more modest anniversary, having supported the Charles Darwin Foundation since 2009, as part of the brand's philanthropic activities. For the 50th anniversary of the Research Station, IWC has introduced three special chronographs dedicated to this cause as part of its revamp of the Aquatimer collection this year: The "Galapagos Islands" edition, the "50 Years Science for Galapagos Edition" and the "Expedition Charles Darwin" edition, which features the brand's first case made out of bronze.

IWC is now one of the most important benefactors of the Charles Darwin foundation and its annual contribution has allowed various projects to be implemented, such as a new shark tagging project that will start in July 2014. "Through its funding, IWC is a driving force for our Galapagos Shark Research and Conservation Project. The research helps us to understand more about the movement and migration patterns of these creatures both within and outside the Galapagos Marine Reserve, information which will help us implement measures to protect them," says Swen Lorenz, CEO of the Charles Darwin Foundation.

  • IWC - A New Generation of Ingenieur

It was first unveiled in the mid-1970's — and - for those true watch lovers - it was originally designed by the legendary Gerald Genta, who revolutionized the appearance of modern watches with uncomplicated technologically inspired designs. For the IWC Schaffhausen Ingenieur SL, he brought the bores for the screws that hold the bezel in place, to the forefront- making them a design element and the hallmark of the line.

Over the years, IWC has added some revolutionary pieces to the Ingenieur collection, and this year, the brand unveils the newest recreations - geared for admirers of sophisticated, high-performance in-house IWC movements. The completely remodeled 2013 Ingenieur watch collection focuses on the brand's new partnership with the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One™ team. For the next 3 years, IWC is the Official Engineering Partner of the Mercedes-Benz works team, and for this year's unveiling the inspiration is from Formula One.

The materials used in the new collection - as in motorsports - are ceramic, carbon fiber, titanium -all of which underscore the pure, functional and technical richness of the Ingenieur. One of the key watches in the collection is the patented Ingenieur Constant-Force Tourbillon (Ref. 5900) in a platinum and ceramic case. Also a destined winner is the Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month watch cased in titanium aluminide.

On the sportier race-related side, outstanding new pieces include the limited Automatic Carbon Performance (with a case and dial made of epoxy resin-soaked carbon fiber matting), as well as the Ingenieur Chronograph Racer (shown here and retailing for  $13,100)  and the Ingenieur Chronograph Silberpfeil (Ref. 3785) - both perfect for recording periods of time, pit-stop times and, with the help of the tachymeter scale, the speed achieved over a measured distance. The Racer features the engraving of a modern Formula One™ car, while the Ingenieur Chronograph Silberpfeil revives the legend of the historic Mercedes-Benz racing car. The silver-colored circular graining on the dial is a tribute to the legendary Silver Arrow W25, whose instruments were placed on a dashboard with a circular-grain decoration. We will bring you more about this exciting collection soon. Stay Tuned.

  • IWC - The Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 in Auckland

Auckland, 15 March 2012 - The fourth leg of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 from Sanya to Auckland involved a tactically demanding offshore challenge and has proved to be the most exciting stage of the race so far. After a stiffly contested leg, the Groupama sailing team claimed its first victory in an open-water stage. As Official Timekeeper, Swiss watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen awarded the prestigious trophy for its 24-hour Speed Record Challenge for the second, consecutive time to the crew of Puma Ocean Racing.

The fourth leg of the event likewise involved something unprecedented in the Volvo Ocean Race. Because of a typhoon warning in the South China Sea, the organizers decided to hold a provisional preliminary heat in Sanya Bay off the Chinese coast. Following the restart, almost all of the teams found their best form, and the final sprint to Auckland developed into an exciting finale. Groupama finally succeeded in taking the lead and was the first team to storm into Auckland Harbour last Saturday. Behind them, just short of a day before the expected arrival time, a nail-biting duel developed between three of the teams for second place, which Puma finally claimed for itself. The third team home was Telefónica, followed by Camper in fourth, while Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing and Sanya completed the leg in fifth and sixth place respectively. At the halfway stage of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012, it is still very much an open question whether overall leader Telefónica can hold on to its advantage in the remaining legs of the competition.

    Welcome to Auckland

It has been 10 years since the race last visited the City of Sails and stopover bosses were guaranteeing a glorious return during the 10 days of celebrations. The race has visited Auckland on eight occasions since the first edition in 1973, but this is the first time it has been back since 2001- 2002. The sailing-crazy city of Auckland gave the teams an enthusiastic reception and a traditional Maori welcome. Their arrival in Auckland could almost be described as "sailing coming home", because virtually all the teams have at least one New Zealander on board. From Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, the team sponsored by IWC Schaffhausen, 38-year-old watch leader and native Kiwi Craig Satterthwaite is particularly happy to be there: "New Zealand's my home. I'm lucky enough to see lots of the rest of the world but each time I come back only confirms to me that it's a very special place. It's unique and I hope it stays that way." By now, the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 has reached the halfway stage. But a number of daunting challenges still lie ahead of the crews, as Craig Satterthwaite confirms: "This upcoming leg will be the toughest physically and mentally. The Southern Ocean is what this race is all about: there's no tougher challenge in offshore sailing. Period."

    IWC 24-hour Speed Record Challenge
Watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen is Official Timekeeper of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 and sponsors the 24-hour Speed Record Challenge. The team that covers the greatest distance within a period of 24 hours in Halftime: IWC Schaffhausen and the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 in each leg is awarded the much-coveted trophy. After racking up 527.819 nautical miles, the crew of Puma took the IWC trophy for the fourth leg awarded by Edwin de Vries, Brand Manager Richemont Australia. The overall fastest time over the entire 8 months of the race will land each of the 11 members of the winning crew a Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph Edition "Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012". IWC Schaffhausen will present the watches to the winning crew at the end of the race in Galway, Ireland. The six teams will set sail on Sunday for the fifth leg. The route takes them 6,705 nautical miles to the Brazilian harbour town of Itajaí, where they are expected on 4 April 2012.

  • IWC - Volvo Ocean Race Yacht

Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) unveiled its Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team's state-of-the-art Volvo Open 70 racing yacht in Portofino, Northern Italy, as it charts a historic course to contest for top honours in the Volvo Ocean Race 2011/12.
The yacht - which was developed by the USA's Farr Yacht Design and built by Italy's Persico S.p.A, in Bergamo - is one of the most sophisticated ever constructed. Conceived in March 2010, it is the combination of more than 7,000 design and 49,000 build hours.
Emblazoned with a striking falcon, the national emblem of the United Arab Emirates of which Abu Dhabi city is the capital, soaring across its bow and main sails, the brilliant black yacht is tasked with carrying the 11-b Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing through the nine-month, 39,000 nautical mile 'Everest of Sailing', which begins in Alicante, Spain this October.

"We have invested in the very best yacht design and build technology available to underpin the expertise of the highly-skilled Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team we have formed," said His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman, ADTA and Team Principal, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing. "This level of commitment is a clear signal of our intention to deliver a first-class performance in our debut Volvo Ocean Race and in our podium ambitions."
The yacht's international debut, set against the spectacular backdrop of the Italian Riviera, was attended by VIPs from Volvo Ocean Race, the Mayor of Portofino and Official Team Partner, the luxury Swiss brand IWC Schaffhausen.
Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, which boasts one of the most international crews ever assembled since the Volvo Ocean Race began in 1973, will now undergo final training in Europe, having spent the winter in the UAE capital.
Over the last few months, the team - the first Volvo Ocean Race Arabian challenger - has been spread all over the globe with weather training in the USA, wind-tunnel sail testing in New Zealand, race practice in the UK and Hong Kong, as well as mast construction in Spain and yacht build in Italy. The team - which is skippered by double-Olympic medallist, Ian Walker of Great Britain - has set its sight on a rigorous Atlantic Ocean sailing programme, before heading to the race start in Spain this October.
"To get to this stage has been a phenomenal international effort which has, in many ways, set new benchmarks. With just under three months to go until the start, we have a demanding time ahead yet with the full team assembled and our new yacht raring to go, we are more than ready to meet it head on," said Walker.

Representing five continents, the outfit also boasts two UAE nationals - 22-year-old Olympian Adil Khalid, and 27-year-old Butti Al Muhairi - who beat off more than 120 hopefuls to earn their places on the sailing and shore teams respectively. Their participation will mark the first time an Emirati has competed in this ultimate endurance race.
The 2011/2012 Volvo Ocean Race will be contested around six continents and across four oceans before ending in Galway, Ireland, in summer 2012. Abu Dhabi will welcome teams from 1-14 January 2012 after they complete a punishing leg from Cape Town.
ADTA has committed to staging a fortnight-long, emirate-wide celebration to mark the Volvo Ocean Race arrival - from headline concerts and interactive race villages for the whole family to great holiday packages across Abu Dhabi's plethora of 4- and 5-star resorts.
The emirate is well progressed with plans for a specially-designed 55,000m² 'Destination Village' being built on Abu Dhabi's picturesque Corniche breakwater. The 'Destination Village' - which will be around the size of eight football pitches - will open free-of-charge to the public daily from December 30 this year to January 14, next year. ADTA anticipates welcoming more than 100,000 visitors through the gates.
The village will be highly interactive and will leverage the emirate's rich maritime heritage. It will be packed with activities and entertainment including exhibitions, shows, simulators, hospitality, game zones, food & beverage outlets and merchandise shops.

  • Ralph Lauren - SIHH 2011 preview

'Every Bugatti is in a certain way an art object, from its dashboard to its tooling to its engine. Every detail on the car is like fine art, or maybe I should say like a very fine watch.' - Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren has long looked to automobiles as a source of inspiration for his designs. From a chair created utilizing the same carbon fiber used in one of his race cars, to a luggage line inspired by the sleek black, urban sensibility of another sports car, the designer has time and again infused his collections with elements from the automotive world.

For 2011, Ralph Lauren presents the first timepiece inspired by his personal car collection, with the introduction of a Ralph Lauren Sporting watch featuring a wood dial. Combining his passion for fine automobiles with his passion for fine timepieces, Ralph Lauren unveils this new timepiece design recalling the refined interior of his model 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic Coupe.

The new Ralph Lauren Sporting timepiece features a stainless steel case with a unique dial in rich loupe d'orme or elm burl-in honor of this car's iconic wooden dashboard and trim detail. Elm burl is a hallmark of elegance and quality in carpentry. Prized for its highly figured patterns and rarity, this wood has been traditionally used by artists and sculptors and is often found in the consoles of luxury automobiles.

The warmth of the wood is contrasted by the dial's matte black galvanic center and by the black calf leather strap, reminiscent of the distinct juxtaposition of the wooden dashboard and black leather seating in Ralph Lauren's prized vintage automobile. True to the car's original dials, this watch displays Arabic numerals for enhanced readability. Sword-shaped hands tell the hour and minutes-marked by an open railroad-style track, while the seconds are indicated by an arrow-shaped hand and closed railroad-style track within the subdial at 6 o'clock. The bezel and dial are accented by functional screws, while the crown displays the iconic RL initials logo.

Showcasing both beauty and functionality, the Ralph Lauren Sporting watch combines a one-of-a-kind and sophisticated aesthetic with the precision of a manual winding mechanical movement-caliber RL98295 made by IWC for Ralph Lauren-featuring a power reserve of 45 hours. As with all Ralph Lauren Sporting Collection models, this timepiece features a sapphire crystal case back, revealing the movement's Côtes de Geneve and Perlage finish work on the plate.

  • IWC - 30,800 euros for the Unique Ingenieur Automatic Mission Earth Edition "Adventure Ecology"

An online auction organised by watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen for a unique and valuable timepiece ended on a high note last weekend. IWC is donating the entire proceeds from the highest bid of 30,800 euros for the unique Ingenieur Automatic Mission Earth Edition "Adventure Ecology" in platinum to the "Sculpt the Future Foundation". For official partner IWC Schaffhausen, the auction was a way of paying tribute to the successful Plastiki expedition.

On 23 July 2010, 3 days before the arrival of the Plastiki expedition in Sydney, an auction for the unique platinum timepiece opened on the expedition website at www.theplastiki.com. The reserve price for the only platinum version of the Ingenieur Automatic Mission Earth Edition "Adventure Ecology" from IWC Schaffhausen was 30,000 euros. When the hammer finally came down at 12.00 hours CET on 7 August 2010, this unique, valuable timepiece went to a watch lover from UK for 30,800 euros. IWC is donating the entire proceeds from the auction to the "Sculpt the Future Foundation", which will be channelling the funds into the ongoing Plastiki project by the name of "The Plastiki Pod". "As a CO2-neutral company, we are particularly pleased that the proceeds from the auction will be used to support inspiring ideas in the struggle against environmental pollution," commented IWC CEO Georges Kern, following the successful auction. "It means that the basic idea behind the Plastiki expedition will live on."

    A watch on a mission
The Ingenieur Automatic Mission Earth Edition "Adventure Ecology" is the expedition watch par excellence. Water-resistant to 12 bar, the case features protective shoulders for the crown and houses the IWC-manufactured 80110 calibre, which has a soft-iron inner case to shield it against magnetic fields and a shock absorption system as protection against impacts. For their voyage lasting several months, the members of the Plastiki were equipped with the stainlesssteel model, which is limited to 1,000 pieces.
Aboard the Plastiki, an 18-metre-long catamaran made almost entirely of reclaimed plastic bottles, they sailed approximately 8,000 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco to Sydney. Adventurer and environmentalist David de Rothschild used the expedition to draw attention to the health of our oceans, in particular the devastating consequences of plastic pollution. His aim is to bring about a change in attitude and persuade people to see garbage as a valuable resource. The spectacular Plastiki, with its solar panels, wind turbines and bicyclepowered electricity generators embodies Adventure Ecology's vision of a future in which everything is possible as long as we are prepared to get off the beaten track.

    The "Sculpt the Future Foundation"
The "Sculpt the Future Foundation" is a UKregistered charitable organisation that supports creative and innovative anti-pollution projects designed to bring about a reversal of thinking and a future-oriented form of environmental protection.
The foundation's work is based on the belief that investment in grass-roots organisations and small-scale initiatives is worthwhile because these tend to be driven by young people whose greatest asset is their passion and commitment. www.sculptthefuturefoundation.org

  • IWC - Portuguese Tourbillon Mystere Retrograde

The Portuguese Tourbillon Mystere has for many years been one of the most beautiful watches with a rotating carriage escapement. The designers at IWC Schaffhausen have now refined this coveted and exclusive timepiece with its seven-day power reserve to include an extraordinary date display.
This is the diva of the Portuguese family - provocative, beautiful and mysterious. Its admirers have continued to increase in number ever since it made its debut in 2004. This can be attributed to its generous proportions, its special class and the remarkable setting of its tourbillon escapement - as an "animated twelve" against a deep black background. The Portuguese Tourbillon Mystere owes its mysteriousness to the illusion that the fine cage containing the balance appears to rotate in a void. The designers at IWC have now refined this already mysterious watch to include a date indicator that flies back at the end of the month - as the Portuguese Tourbillon Mystere Retrograde.
The graduated scale for the supplementary flyback date indicator, which is integrated into the IWC-manufactured 51900-calibre movement, extends over one quarter of the surface of the generously dimensioned dial. On reaching the end of any months with 31 days - January, March, May, July, August, October, December - the date indicator springs back automatically to "1". In shorter months, or also if the watch has not been worn for some time, the date indicator can be advanced by the rapid adjustment function and flies back to the first day of the month. The time does not need to be adjusted in conjunction with this. This superior watch is now enhanced by an exceptional display.
The small seconds, which previously occupied this position, is replaced in a particularly appealing fashion by the minute tourbillon. Its steel cage with the three characteristic stays arranged in the shape of a star performs this function. On the right half of the dial, the indicator for the seven-day power reserve displays information about the remaining available power of the spring barrel, which is supplied to it in a highly efficient manner via the proven Pellaton winding system of this calibre family. The flying minute tourbillon, that is to say it is supported on only one side, consists of 81 parts and weighs 0.433 gram. It provides the focal point of this dial-cum-stage as an "animated twelve" and rotates against the deep black background of the black under part of its cage - a wheel which rotates together with the cage once every minute.
Whereas in the previous model the tourbillon was still embedded in a plate segment decorated with cylindrical grinding, in the Portuguese Tourbillon Mystere Retrograde it is set in a ring that is mirror-finished on the inside, in which the parts of the escapement are reflected once again. For aside from the technical delicacy of this escapement, the Portuguese Tourbillon Mystere Retrograde is above all a true feast for the eyes.
In addition to the 500-piece limited edition of the variant in 18 carat red gold with solid gold appliques and a silver-plated dial, a 250-piece limited edition of the variant in platinum with a ruthenium-black dial and rhodium-plated hands and indices is also available.

  • IWC - Portuguese Grande Complication

The Grande Complication from IWC Schaffhausen, which brought the highest horological complications together in a wristwatch as a world-first precisely twenty years ago, now appears for the first time in a Portuguese case. It also retains its impressive technical inventory: perpetual calendar, minute repeater and chronograph with automatic movement.
Vasco da Gama's flagship, on which he sailed around the Cape of Good Hope more than 500 years ago and discovered the sea route to India, was the caravel Nau São Gabriel. The new flagship of the most celebrated family of watches from IWC is the Portuguese Grande Complication. This is the superlative watch from IWC, which in 1990 was the first manufacturer to bring together the highest horological complications and to make them "wearable" as a wristwatch. A timepiece of the highest prestige and a solitaire in the collection, which is limited to 50 numbered examples annually. This masterpiece now has a new home inside the Portuguese case - and a new face.
Grande Complication - lying behind this title of distinction in the world of Haute Horlogerie is the ancient dream of making the most significant discoveries of the watchmaker's craft oscillate, run and even chime together. Precisely twenty years ago, the engineers at IWC realized this dream, a feat that brought worldwide acclaim to the manufacturer. It took more than seven years of intensive development work in Schaffhausen before 657 individual parts could be assembled together in the smallest possible space in order to bring to fruition a perfectly functioning whole, which, in spite of its complexity, is characterized by its ingeniously simple operation and total suitability for everyday use. Only the most talented designers and master watchmakers can accomplish this. And that is why the range of such exceptional achievements has been very limited to this day.

The Portuguese Grande Complication, for which a new case with a diameter of 45 millimetres has been created, inherits an extraordinarily wellproven technical inventory: the 79091-calibre chronograph movement with automatic winding and aggregate time recording up to 12 hours, the minute repeater - a complication specially constructed at the time - which belongs to the most modern and reliable mechanisms of its kind and, last but not least, the autonomous perpetual calendar. It also shows the wearer the year, decade, century and millennium in a four-digit display, as well as the day, date and month, in a way that is unsurpassed to this day. A perpetual moon phase display, with a deviation of only a single day in 122 years from the actual cycle of the moon, is connected to the calendar, which requires no adjustments or interventions on the part of the wearer until the year 2100 and advances all the calendar indications in a mechanically programmed and synchronous manner.
The previous Grande Complication, which will continue to be built in parallel, already possessed water-resistance to 1 bar thanks to the patented slide mechanism; in the case of a minute repeater, this is almost equivalent to squaring the circle. In the new Portuguese Grande Complication, the water-resistance has been increased to an impressive 3 bar. The new flagship of this watch family is entirely in keeping with the spirit of the Portuguese seafarers, and this can also be seen in engraving on the back of the red gold case. A sextant, which is an indispensable instrument of nautical navigation alongside the watch, is a reference here to this spiritual affinity.
The substantially larger silver-plated dial provides a perfect setting for the calendar indications of such a complex watch. Against the background of a discreetly engraved globe with its degrees of longitude and latitude - positioned, incidentally, in the correct 23.4-degree angle of inclination of the terrestrial axis - the counters for the chronograph and the calendar indications are accommodated in addition to the small seconds and the moon phase display. A shaped sapphire glass that has antireflective coating on both sides arches over the dial with its solid red gold appliques, Arabic numerals for the hours and railway track-style chapter ring. The rectangular, lightly bevelled operating buttons of the chronograph capture the understated style of the Portuguese case. Only the slide on the left side of the case, which "makes the music", reveals to an expert the nature of the precision mechanical refinement that is concealed inside this watch with its minute repeater. Speaking of which, in spite of the increased water-resistance of the case, the loudness and the balanced sound quality have not been impaired. This is assured not least by the larger sound chamber and a cleverly engineered solution, which utilizes the sapphire glass for transmission of the sound to the outside. Cast off - for the new flagship of the Portuguese fleet.
