  • IWC - Ingenieur Automatic Edition "AMG GT"

The Ingenieur Automatic Edition "AMG GT" (Ref. IW324602) - that also commemorates IWC's ten-year partnership with Mercedes-AMG - is the first watch worldwide to feature a case made of boron carbide, currently the hardest ceramic of them all, and will be limited to just 25 pieces.
The timepiece is equipped with the in-house 80110-calibre, which has an integrated shock-absorption system. As a tribute to its namesake, the colour black has been combined with stylish yellow elements that reference AMG's exclusive colour, "solarbeam". The screws in the bezel and crown are made of black zirconium oxide.

The watch is secured to the wrist with a rugged, skin-friendly rubber strap. With the black Dinamica® inlay, which is set off with yellow quilted stitching, the watch features the same innovative microfibre used by Mercedes-AMG to pad the steering wheel, seat upholstery and headliner in the new Mercedes-AMG GT.

The name chosen for the new watch is a tribute to the new Mercedes-AMG sports car, the second vehicle built entirely in-house by the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz. Since January 2013, IWC has built on its involvement in motor racing as Official Engineering Partner of the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team and has two fine brand ambassadors in Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

The Goodwood Members' Meeting is the first in a series of historic races that can count on IWC Schaffhausen's support in the years ahead. In 2014, the Goodwood Road Racing Club (GRRC) re-established its club racing tradition with the Members' Meeting. These races, held at the circuit that opened in 1948, are open exclusively to members and were a resounding success between 1949 and 1966. The hallmark of the Goodwood Members' Meeting has always been a world-class field of historic racing cars and well-known drivers.

IWC Schaffhausen brought three spectacular AMG vehicles to Goodwood: the latest Mercedes- AMG GT, one Mercedes F1 W04, and the 300 SEL 6.8 AMG - AMG's first vehicle, which created a sensation in 1971 when it clinched second place in the 24-hour touring car race at Spa.
In an unconventional "race against time" at Goodwood Members' Meeting this year, German ex-racing driver Jochen Mass took the 300 SEL 6.8 AMG through its paces on the circuit while his Austrian colleague Karl Wendlinger got behind the wheel of the Mercedes-AMG GT and set out in pursuit. Anthony Davidson, winner of last year's FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and former Formula One driver, was in no hurry with his Formula One racing car at the start, but soon moved into top gear and put in a fantastic performance to cross the finishing line at the same time as the other two vehicles.
Apart from this spectacle, visitors witnessed a series of keenly contested races and high-speed demonstrations featuring cars from the pre-war era to 1990s Group C prototypes. At the end of the race weekend, IWC Schaffhausen honoured the driver who had recorded the fastest lap time with a special timepiece from the Ingenieur line: the Ingenieur Chronograph Silberpfeil (Ref. IW378505).

  • IWC Schaffhausen - Aquatimer Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month

In 2014, the perpetual calendar with its quick-action switch and large digital display showing the date and month took its place in IWC Schaffhausen's diver's watch family.
The distinctly technical design of the dial is characterized by the extra-large numerals of the perpetual calendar, which is mechanically programmed until 2100. The date and month discs have perforated covers. The designers took their inspiration for this particular element from the filter systems that are omnipresent on submarine vehicles. The four-year leap year cycle is also shown digitally. At IWC, the digital display with large numerals has a tradition dating back over 100 years. A subdial at "12 o'clock" displays stop times between one minute and 12 hours as simply as the time of day, using minute and hour hands, while the central hand counts the number of seconds.

The integrated flyback function enables the user to reset the running stopwatch hands to zero and to start another timing sequence immediately. The display also helps divers monitor the speed of their ascents.

The Super-LumiNova®* coating on the hands and indices glows particularly brightly in the dark in two different colours: green for displays relevant to dive time, blue for the hour display.

With its 49mm case - water-resistant to 10 bar - the it is the second-largest wristwatch in IWC's history. The external rotating bezel is made of 18-carat red gold, as is the protective cover on the left side of the case for the advanced sliding clutch system, which transmits the rotation of the external bezel to the internal rotating bezel. The IWC SafeDive system ensures that the bezel can only be turned anticlockwise. The casing ring, push-buttons and crown are made of rubber-coated titanium.

The see-through sapphire-glass back provides a view of the IWC-manufactured 89801 movement, which comprises 474 individual parts.

The black rubber strap with its black alligator leather inlay guarantees maximum comfort in wear and a long service life.

  • IWC - Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month

TITANIUM ALUMINIDE - A MATERIAL USED IN MOTORSPORT
When it comes to the use of state-of-the-art high-tech materials, the competition in both watchmaking and motor racing is fierce. For the first time ever, IWC Schaffhausen unveils a watch case made of titanium aluminide (TiAl) and underscores its passion for innovative solutions. IWC discovered the use of titanium for the watch industry as a case material as early as 1980. In motor racing, titanium aluminide is used for pistons and valves: this is because the alloy is lighter and tougher than pure titanium and very well suited to the extreme temperatures generated in the combustion chamber. Machining this high-performance material for case blanks is a major technological challenge. A team of specialists at IWC worked on it for 3 years until they mastered the process to perfection. Push-buttons, screw heads and the crown and its protective shoulders on the Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month are made of black high-tech ceramic (zirconium oxide). IWC was also the first watch manufacturer to use this antimagnetic, acid-resistant and scratch-resistant material for a case - that of the Da Vinci Ceramic (Ref. 3755) - back in 1986. Composites using ceramics have established themselves for the use of brake discs in Formula One™ because of their resistance to heat and to mechanical wear and tear. The combination of titanium aluminide and ceramicin the case is not only an indication of IWC's engineering prowess but also of the special affinity between the Ingenieurwatches and motor racing.
    QUICK-ACTION SWITCH DELIVERS MAXIMUM POWER
When a Formula One™ driver needs more power, he simply presses the hybrid boost button on the steering wheel to unleash all his engine's potential. At the end of the year, the Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month is called upon to advance two date and two month display discs as well as the leap year disc. Unfortunately, it cannot simply push a boost button. Mastering the technological challenge presented here took a team of IWC watchmakersand design engineers no less than 4 years. They developed a mechanism to store the energy separately: a quick-action switch, as it is known. Every night, when the date display advances, this sophisticated mechanism siphons off a little of the energy, stores it and then discharges it precisely at the end of the month. At the end of the year, five display discs - including the one for the digital leap year display - have to be advanced simultaneously. Needless to say, this must have no effect on the watch's accuracy, even if the tension in the mainspring is almost exhausted or if the chronograph is also activated at the same time.

    WATCH-WITHIN-A-WATCH
The innovative "watch-within-a-watch" was designed for the rapid, intuitive display of stop times between a minute and 12 hours. While stop times up to 60 seconds are shown conventionally by the central chronograph hand, the hours and minutes recorded by the stopwatch can be read off on the totalizer at "12 o'clock" as easily as reading the time on an analogue display. The integrated flyback function allows wearers to return the running stopwatch hand to zero and to start another timing sequence immediately. To turn this practical chronograph function into reality, the design engineers equipped the IWC-manufactured 89802 calibre with a particularly efficient automatic double-pawl winding system. The movement consists of 474 individual parts and can build up a power reserve of 68 hours. As an acknowledgement of IWC's involvement with motor racing in 2013, the rotor takes the shape of a wheel rim and can be seen through the transparent sapphire-glass back on the reverse side of the Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month. The attractive black rubber strap with textile inlay ensures that the watch is extremely comfortable to wear and has a long service life.

  • IWC - 30,800 euros for the Unique Ingenieur Automatic Mission Earth Edition "Adventure Ecology"

An online auction organised by watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen for a unique and valuable timepiece ended on a high note last weekend. IWC is donating the entire proceeds from the highest bid of 30,800 euros for the unique Ingenieur Automatic Mission Earth Edition "Adventure Ecology" in platinum to the "Sculpt the Future Foundation". For official partner IWC Schaffhausen, the auction was a way of paying tribute to the successful Plastiki expedition.

On 23 July 2010, 3 days before the arrival of the Plastiki expedition in Sydney, an auction for the unique platinum timepiece opened on the expedition website at www.theplastiki.com. The reserve price for the only platinum version of the Ingenieur Automatic Mission Earth Edition "Adventure Ecology" from IWC Schaffhausen was 30,000 euros. When the hammer finally came down at 12.00 hours CET on 7 August 2010, this unique, valuable timepiece went to a watch lover from UK for 30,800 euros. IWC is donating the entire proceeds from the auction to the "Sculpt the Future Foundation", which will be channelling the funds into the ongoing Plastiki project by the name of "The Plastiki Pod". "As a CO2-neutral company, we are particularly pleased that the proceeds from the auction will be used to support inspiring ideas in the struggle against environmental pollution," commented IWC CEO Georges Kern, following the successful auction. "It means that the basic idea behind the Plastiki expedition will live on."

    A watch on a mission
The Ingenieur Automatic Mission Earth Edition "Adventure Ecology" is the expedition watch par excellence. Water-resistant to 12 bar, the case features protective shoulders for the crown and houses the IWC-manufactured 80110 calibre, which has a soft-iron inner case to shield it against magnetic fields and a shock absorption system as protection against impacts. For their voyage lasting several months, the members of the Plastiki were equipped with the stainlesssteel model, which is limited to 1,000 pieces.
Aboard the Plastiki, an 18-metre-long catamaran made almost entirely of reclaimed plastic bottles, they sailed approximately 8,000 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco to Sydney. Adventurer and environmentalist David de Rothschild used the expedition to draw attention to the health of our oceans, in particular the devastating consequences of plastic pollution. His aim is to bring about a change in attitude and persuade people to see garbage as a valuable resource. The spectacular Plastiki, with its solar panels, wind turbines and bicyclepowered electricity generators embodies Adventure Ecology's vision of a future in which everything is possible as long as we are prepared to get off the beaten track.

    The "Sculpt the Future Foundation"
The "Sculpt the Future Foundation" is a UKregistered charitable organisation that supports creative and innovative anti-pollution projects designed to bring about a reversal of thinking and a future-oriented form of environmental protection.
The foundation's work is based on the belief that investment in grass-roots organisations and small-scale initiatives is worthwhile because these tend to be driven by young people whose greatest asset is their passion and commitment. www.sculptthefuturefoundation.org
