  • Zenith - Pilot Type 20 Hommage a Louis Bleriot

Whether fitted with a meteorite dial (Pilot Type 20 Hommage a Louis Bleriot watch), housed in a bronze case (Pilot Type 20 Extra Special) or displaying a breathtakingly light architecture (Pilot Type 20 Squelette), each of the new timepieces is heir to the onboard instruments developed by the Manufacture during the infancy of aviation. They are endowed with the main attributes of their legendary forebears: a high-precision movement, an imposing diameter, a broad ratcheted screwed-in crown, as well as large Arabic numerals swept over by finely crafted hands.

Today, we take a closer look at the Pilot Type 20 Hommage a Louis Bleriot watch.

Crafted in a five-piece limited edition, the new Pilot Type 20 Hommage a Louis Bleriot features a 60 mm-diameter case carved from a block of sapphire, water-resistant to 30m, and topped by a bezel, lugs and large ratcheted crown in white gold.
Its deep grey meteorite dial is graced with a natural motif forming interlacing ribbons against a finely sandblasted background. This is a fragment of the Muonionalusta asteroid, discovered in 1906, which sped through the atmosphere and fell to earth between Sweden and Finland.

Beneath the imposing domed sapphire crystal, the display provided by characterised oversized Arabic numerals and stylised hands enhanced with a phosphorescent material ensures optimal read-off for all its functions.
At the heart of the timepiece beats the entirely hand-engraved Calibre 5011K. Driving hours and minutes hands along with small seconds at 9 o'clock and a power-reserve indicator at 3 o'clock, Calibre 5011K operates at the rate of 18,000 vibrations per hour and enjoys 48 hours of autonomy.
Having set impressive precision records in its category, including the 1967 Neuchatel Observatory award for the most accurate chronometer ever presented, this legendary mechanical movement equipped maritime chronometers and pocket watches before enjoying a second lease on life in the wristwatches of the Pilot collection. A number of original 5011K calibres found in the archives of the Manufacture, duly restored and decorated, now equip several Pilot Type 20 models , including this Hommage a Louis Bleriot model.

The transparent case-back reveals an engraving work depicting Louis Bleriot's cross-Channel flight in 1909 aboard the Bleriot XI plane, his Zenith watch firmly on his wrist.
The watch is completed with a black alligator leather strap with protective rubber lining, secured with a white gold pin buckle.

  • Zenith - Zenith Watches - The Experience

Zenith Watches - The Experience new app is designed to be a companion to Zenith clients and to provide them with the best possible once the watch is on their wrist.

Using videos, tutorials, texts and photos, the experience offered by the manufacture Zenith is guided by clear navigation that leads you through distinct and understandable menus. Customer Service, User tips and Adjustments as well as Specialities make up the main sections while Frequently Asked Questions, Glossary and Store Locator round off the palette on offer.

The Customer Service section provides the hoops through which every Zenith watch has to jump when it is back at the manufacture for a maintenance service. With its particularities, the restoration service reserved for historical watches is also presented in detail.

The User Tips and Adjustments section offers adjustment tutorials brought to life and supported by a voice-over for each complication and each Zenith mechanical movement. This section also incorporates a multitude of practical recommendations that make it possible to avoid inflicting inappropriate treatment on every mechanical watch.

The Specialties section is reserved for all those who have always wanted to know more about watchmaking complications. Here, Zenith details some of its specialties in the menu and explains the principle and the functioning through the use of drawings, audio documents and videos. From the Tourbillon to the Gyroscopic Module (patented by Zenith) via the Equation of Time, a total of six specialties are presented and explained in this section.

On the practical side, the usual Frequently Asked Questions section takes on a completely different allure. How many of them would you be able to answer? The Glossary, on the other hand, guides neophytes through the maze of watchmaking appellations and terminology. However, this is not an entire, thoroughly indigestible dictionary, but a compendium of watchmaking terms used in the app. Finally, if you are looking for or have found your next Zenith - or if you are intending to have yours services, the Store Locator will be a valuable help.

  • Zenith - At the GPHG 2013

Zenith had entered six watches into the GPHG 2013: the Academy Christophe Colomb Hurricane in the "Grande Complication" category, the Captain Central Second in the "Men's watch" category, the Pilot Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 Calendrier Annuel in the "Men's complication" category, the Pilot Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 "40 mm Lady" in the "Ladies' watch" category, the El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th "Sport watch" category and the Pilot Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 GMT "Petite Aiguille" category. These last three watches were pre-selected and will participate in the final stage of the contest. The winners will be announced on November 15, 2013, during a prize-giving ceremony that will take place at the Grand Theâtre de Geneve. You can take part in the Prix du Public by voting for your favourite watches. To vote for Zenith timepieces, click here. Pilot Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 "40 mm Lady" In the 1930s and 1940s, the Montre d'Aeronef Zenith Type 20 equipped a number of aircraft, including the famous Caudron Simoun C.635 planes used by the French airforce for training purposes.
The Pilot Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 "40 mm Lady" features a generous 40 mm case equipped with a ratcheted crown evoking historical aviator watches, while the Zenith Flying Instruments logo engraved on the case-back serves as reminder of the origins of this timepiece. The Pilot Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 "40 mm Lady" showcases the original large Arabic numerals made from blocks of SuperLuminova. Beneath this composition water-resistant to 100 metres beats the automatic Elite 681 movement driving a small seconds subdial at 9 o'clock. A satin strap fitted with a pin buckle sets the finishing touch to this watch.
El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th The El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th is the world's most precise series-made chronograph equipped with a Striking 10th function and its three coloured counters enabling tenth of a second reading. Complete with its flyback function, this top-flight instrument proves particularly useful for pilots, since it enables them to stop, reset and restart the chronograph in one smooth move.
The Stratos worn by supersonic skydiver Felix Baumgartner has experienced a similar destiny, accompanying him in his jump secured to his right arm over his spacesuit and in direct contact with the exterior. Despite the massive accelerations, temperature differences and variations in atmospheric pressure encountered during the 9 minutes and 18 seconds of the jump, the El Primero chronograph was running as smoothly as ever upon its return to terra firma.  Pilot Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 GMT This 48 mm-diameter model features a wide grooved and screw-locked crown, imposing Arabic numerals entirely made of white Superluminova displaying the time, as well as a large matt black dial - forming a backdrop against which the finely satin-brushed ruthenium black, Superluminova-enhanced hands stand out clearly and visibily. The solid caseback is composed of a medallion struck with the effigy of a Bleriot plane and bearing the inscription: "Montre d'Aeronef Type 2 - ZENITH Flying Instruments". In a nod to the Swiss civil aviation registration system, the letters HB appear on the side of the case, followed by a figure referring to the model's series number.
Powered by an automatic Zenith Elite 693 movement with a 50-hour power reserve, this steel model with a brown leather strap drives the hours, minutes, small seconds at 9 o'clock and GMT functions.

  • Zenith - Pilot Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 GMT Red Baron

The Manufacture Zenith, which has remained in the very same spot for almost a century and half, was an integral part of the early days in the amazing saga of aviation and was one of the first to supply onboard watches and instruments.
Louis Bleriot and Leon Morane were acquainted with each other. The two famous pioneering aviators took part in the conquest of the skies in the early 20th century. On July 25th 1909, at the age of 37, Bleriot flew across the Channel in a plane he had built: a world-first accomplishment. Less than a year later, 25 year-old Morane flew at more than 100 km/h at an air show in Reins, France - an unbelievable speed for the time. His aircraft was a Bleriot XI. The two men shared a passion for aviation as well as a taste for risks - and of course for competition. Not only that, but Louis Bleriot and Leon Morane also owned an instrument that was a must-have for pilots, a Zenith watch that they regarded as the most accurate on the market. Witness these few lines penned by each: "I am very satisfied with my Zenith watch that I generally use and I cannot but recommend it to all those with a concern for precision", wrote Louis Bleriot, while Leon Morane exclaimed "Zenith! Isn't that a predestined name for aviators? Add to that the fact that all these qualities are housed within the attractive case of this watch, and you've got a Zenith."
Zenith thus made a decisive early entrance into the extraordinary adventure of aviation. First partnering some of the greatest pioneers, the Manufacture subsequently became one of the first onboard instrument manufacturers. Altimeters and onboard watches (montres d'aeronef) intended for inflight use were supplied both to the military and to civilian airlines. Known among aeronautical industry manufacturers and professionals for its reliability, its sturdiness and its precision, the famous Zenith Type 20 appeared as of 1938 on the instrument panels of a number of planes - including the Caudron Simon C.635 used by the French Air Force as a training aircraft. Today's Pilot collection is a worthy heir to these years of airborne glory and conquests.

GMT watches are thus direct heirs to the conquest of the skies, which is why Zenith wished to pay homage through a special GMT series to one of the most talented pilots of his era, who became a legend: the Red Baron. Born Albrecht von Richthofen in May 1892 in what is now Poland, he was fascinated by the budding field of aviation and soon became a true aerobatics artist - a flying ace to whom even pilots of the allied forces paid tribute. His celebrity and his nickname are inseparably bound up with that of the bright red-painted Fokker Triplane Dr.1. Famed for his 80 air combat victories, he was one of the last representatives of the nobler values of such combat: honour, fair play and courage.
It is in memory of this gifted pilot whose name is still cited to this day that Zenith has created a 500-piece limited edition: the Pilot Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 GMT Red Baron. Made in black DLC-coated steel and fitted with an overstitched black leather strap, this model is also distinguished by its red GMT marking and by the caseback medallion depicting the Fokker Triplane Dr.1 and bearing the inscription: Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 - ZENITH Flying Instruments. Definitely a collector's watch.

  • Zenith - Baumgartner's Zenith Stratos Flyback Striking 10th

    HODINKEE - 15 October 2012

Add one more record to the list of those broken this afternoon when Felix Baumgartner stepped out of a pressurized capsule at nearly 128,000 feet and became the first human to freefall at Mach 1. Strapped to his wrist, outside of his spacesuit, was the Zenith Stratos Flyback Striking 10th, making it the first wristwatch to be exposed to such a velocity outside of an air- or spacecraft. This is officially the fastest watch in the world.
With this feat, the Stratos joins an elite list of legendary "space" watches, such as the Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute and the Omega Speedmaster Professional. During the lead up to Baumgartner's "mission to the edge of space," we got our hands on one of these highly capable watches.
Nowadays, there aren't a lot of high-end sports watches that are proven in real world conditions or used as standard equipment (Richard Mille and the Rolex DeepSea Sea Dweller notwithstanding). They're typically just strapped on at the end of a tennis match or given a limited edition engraved caseback. But Zenith was confident enough in its Stratos Flyback Striking 10th to strap one on to Baumgartner's arm and to expose it to the harsh environment and shock waves of a supersonic skydive from 24 miles high.

The watch Baumgartner wore was a stock Stratos Flyback, with the exception of a solid caseback in place of the transparent sapphire back. The caseback of this edition features an engraving of Baumgartner in his space helmet and commemorative text around the outer edge. Zenith has told us that this is not a limited edition watch.
The Stratos Flyback Striking 10th features Zenith's vaunted high-frequency El Primero self-winding calibre with foudryante complication, capable of timing events to 1/10th of a second, thanks to a center seconds hand that traverses the dial once every ten seconds. It is the first Striking 10th to feature a flyback complication, allowing for one-touch resetting and restarting of the chronograph. The dial is virtually identical to the standard El Primero Striking 10th, with the trademark tri-color subdials that echo the original El Primero A386 from 1969. The Stratos case is 14mm thick, 45.5mm across, and features a chunky uni-directional ratcheting timing bezel with a ceramic insert. The chronograph pushers are rectangular and low-profile, providing protection for the screw-down crown nestled between them. This is one big watch and it wears heavy, even on a strap?

Speaking of straps, the Stratos Flyback "Tribute to Felix Baumgartner" has two available options. The first is an excellent thick black rubber strap with fitted steel endlinks (which provide a flush fit to the case) and a foldover deployant clasp. The deployant has a pushbutton closure and a small foldout extension that allows the watch to fit over your wrist - but certainly not enough for a spacesuit sleeve. For that, you'd need the extra-long nylon hook-and-loop strap that Zenith is not selling as an option, since, presumably, there isn't a huge market requiring that kind of wear.
Most members of the Red Bull Stratos project team were wearing their watches on the three-link steel bracelet, with polished center links and double pushbutton deployant clasp. We didn't get our hands on this one, but one can imagine the heft of that configuration. A third strap option is a lovely wide alligator strap fitted with the same steel endlinks as the rubber strap. The gator strap is actually standard on the non-Baumgartner version of the watch, but can be ordered separately as well?

The Stratos Flyback Striking 10th Tribute to Felix Baumgartner is brimming with technology and refinement, yet it comes in under $10,000. On the rubber strap, the price is $9,200, though if you opt for the steel bracelet, you'll move into five figures at $10,400. Sure, that's a lot of money, but for an innovative manufacture column wheel flyback foudryante chronograph movement, it may be the best value haute horlogerie watch on earth in addition to the fastest. • Zenith - New Boutique in Hong Kong

On July 11th 2011, a boutique exclusively dedicated to watches from the Swiss watch manufacturer Zenith has opened on one of Hong Kong's busiest shopping miles, at no. 58 Russell Street, Causeway Bay.

This new concept store is far more than just a boutique; it's a whole universe featuring an interior design that draws visitors into a temple of Swiss watchmaking tradition, the Manufacture Zenith. This legendary firm is still located in the exact spot where its founder Georges Favre-Jacot first established it in 1865. To this very day, it is there that each Zenith timepiece is developed, produced and assembled, benefiting from expertise handed down and enriched for almost one hundred and fifty years.
Enter the world of the Manufacture Zenith
The Zenith brand has been present in Hong Kong since the start of the 20th century. Today more than ever, it is keenly aware of the strategic location of this teeming metropolis. The boutique to be opened at no. 58, Russell Street, a few steps from Times Square, will be the first in the world to feature the new design Zenith has developed for its boutiques. From the outside already, it stands out from the crowd thanks to its geometrical storefront studded with glass panes and framed by two large stone columns - both characteristics directly inspired by the architecture of the historical Zenith headquarters. The frontispiece proudly bears the star, the brand emblem, as well as a reminder of the year the company was founded.

Upon stepping through the doorway, visitors are immediately immersed into the Zenith universe - a discreet world combining subtle expertise and noble materials assembled with a blend of precision and elegance. The interior decoration of the boutique picks up the same play on horizontal and vertical lines as the outside window, interpreting it in displays, counters and exhibition areas. In terms of materials, the dominant theme is wenge wood combined with "Chantilly" stone, creating a refined contrast between a deep chestnut brown and a luminous matt creamy shade.
Manufacture Zenith, a precious gem within the world watchmaking heritage
In Switzerland, a haven of precision horology, only a few rare brands can still boast complete mastery of the production of their own timepieces and thus lay claim to the supreme title of Manufacture. Zenith is one of these, and one can even safely state that its founder, Georges Favre, is the inventor of the concept of a watch Manufacture. It was he who had the idea in 1865 of building spacious and luminous buildings in Le Locle, in the Swiss Jura, where the full range of specialised artisans involved in the making of the various movement parts could be brought together under one roof. Prior to this, these craftsmen worked independently, scattered between various small workshops: uniting them in one place would enable them to coordinate their work in order to improve the accuracy and the reliability of the watch mechanisms.

To this day, the Manufacture is still located in the exact place where the founder built his first workshop, and its buildings are part of an industrial ensemble that UNESCO added to its list of World Heritage sites in 2009 under the title "Watchmaking town planning". This is where all stages involved in production are still performed, which means that anyone acquiring a Zenith timepiece can enjoy the absolute certainty that it has been developed and produced from start to fi nish in the workshops of Le Locle.
The excellence of the Zenith tradition
The Manufacture in Le Locle has considerable technical and creative potential: in its 146 years of existence, it has filed 297 awards and won a vast number of timing competition prizes - 2,333 in all, making it the most titled brand in terms of onboard watches, wristwatches and pocket-watches. Its achievements include the development of the world's most precise series-produced mechanical calibre, beating at a frequency of 10 vibrations per second.

All the Zenith collections will naturally be on hand to be admired, tried on and adopted in the new Hong Kong boutique. Whether the feminine lines (such as the Ultra Thin Lady Moonphase, an ultra-thin model interpreted in versions including some extremely elaborate models falling into the luxury jewellery category), or the masculine models, they are characterised by their innate elegance (Captain, a range encompassing models with a variety of horological complications), by their sporty appeal (Stratos Flyback), or by a technical tradition magnificently represented by the Striking 10th collection offering tenth of a second readoff. Zenith will also offer passionate enthusiasts a number of fine watchmaking models that the Manufacture produces in strictly limited series, such as the recently launched Christophe Colomb, the first wrist chronograph featuring a movement housed within a miniaturised gyroscopic cage in order to neutralise its wearer's movements. All this and more awaits visitors to the brand-new Zenith boutique on Russell Street.

  • Zenith - The latest watchmaking creations

Zenith's sales reached blast off last year with the CEO announcing double-digit growth. This development is primarily due to the collections being refocused on the brand's founding values: esthetics, accuracy, and technical complexity. The tone has been set! Not satisfied with simply perpetuating tradition, Zenith is reinventing it with style and panache.

    A sneak preview in Geneva

On the evening of Sunday, January 16th, a panel of over 100 international journalists and retailers of the brand gathered in Geneva. This annual meeting, held before the first watchmaking trade show of the year, has become an unmissable event. The curtain was raised to the sounds of the Gypsy Queens, who provided the soundtrack for this presentation.

Zenith in orbit - the three new lines
The Captain, available in three versions, is the purest expression of Zenith's watchmaking heritage. Each one features a useful complication: power reserve, moon phase or second time zone. The second line, Chronomaster, brilliantly combines the most rigorous watchmaking tradition with contemporary boldness. The Chronomaster Open showcases the very heart of time, revealing its movement's 36,000 vibrations through an opening in its dial. This open window piques our curiosity through both the magic it exudes and the questions it raises. But let there be no doubt: the Chronomaster Open is above all a technological exploit, a timepiece that is 100% technology, 100% passion. The third line, the El Primero Striking 10th, is currently flying high above the Earth at a speed of 27,700 km/h. Launched by a Soyuz rocket, the watch reached the International Space Station (ISS) in December 2010. It will remain in space for six months, orbiting the Earth.

    The pioneering spirit
Zenith has always been a trailblazer in previously unexplored fields. The three new lines presented in Geneva are further proof of the brand's ability to innovate and launch exceptional models before anyone else. For the first time at Zenith, the Striking 10th model provides a visible mechanical expression of the tenths of a second it measures, i.e. each beat of the heart that drives the famous El Primero.

  • Zenith - A renewed heritage

Named "the first" as a symbol of its precedence, its primacy and its universality, the original El Primero chronograph movement is an innovative masterpiece that has since become a benchmark in its field. Having subtly evolved over the years while retaining its signature characteristics, it now appears as an El Primero 469 calibre that is showcased to striking effect in the Collection New Vintage 69, reflecting a vintage model now endowed with a decidedly contemporary touch.

Its balance oscillating at the extraordinary speed of 36,000 vibrations per hour enables this unique movement to ensure 1/10th of a second accuracy. The fully integrated movement design takes up a minimum of space while guaranteeing reliable and precise measurement of short times. The entire 'orchestra' of 278 strategically positioned and finely tuned components is governed by a prestigious 'conductor' in the shape of a column wheel coordinating orders transmitted via the push-buttons. The oscillating weight adorned with Côtes de Geneve can be viewed through the transparent sapphire crystal fitted in the case-back of the New Vintage 69 model.

The distinctive lines of the original case have been redesigned to create an even more powerful, clean-cut effect. The double glareproofed sapphire crystal ensures an optimal view of the shiny plain black dial graced with applied hand-fitted hour-markers coated with Superluminova, as well as the black beadblasted hands with white Superluminova. The use of this luminescent substance, along with a clever play on contrasting colours, serves to ensure excellent legibility in all circumstances.

The central hour and minute hands are complemented by small seconds on a subdial at 9 o'clock and a date window at 4.30, while the chronograph functions comprise a central seconds hand, 30-minute and 12-hour counters at 3 and 6 o'clock respectively, as well as a tachometric scale around the dial rim serving to measure the speed of travel. This sophisticated timekeeping instrument is teamed with an elegant strap in black alligator leather complete with stainless steel pin buckle.

Embodying the finest horological accomplishments expressed through invigorated styling, the New Vintage 69 Collection is indeed an eloquent symbol of enduring excellence.
