Zenith - At the GPHG 2013
Zenith had entered six watches into the GPHG 2013: the Academy Christophe Colomb Hurricane in the "Grande Complication" category, the Captain Central Second in the "Men's watch" category, the Pilot Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 Calendrier Annuel in the "Men's complication" category, the Pilot Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 "40 mm Lady" in the "Ladies' watch" category, the El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th "Sport watch" category and the Pilot Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 GMT "Petite Aiguille" category. These last three watches were pre-selected and will participate in the final stage of the contest. The winners will be announced on November 15, 2013, during a prize-giving ceremony that will take place at the Grand Theâtre de Geneve. Pilot Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 "40 mm Lady" In the 1930s and 1940s, the Montre d'Aeronef Zenith Type 20 equipped a number of aircraft, including the famous Caudron Simoun C.635 planes used by the French airforce for training purposes.
The Pilot Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 "40 mm Lady" features a generous 40 mm case equipped with a ratcheted crown evoking historical aviator watches, while the Zenith Flying Instruments logo engraved on the case-back serves as reminder of the origins of this timepiece. The Pilot Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 "40 mm Lady" showcases the original large Arabic numerals made from blocks of SuperLuminova. Beneath this composition water-resistant to 100 metres beats the automatic Elite 681 movement driving a small seconds subdial at 9 o'clock. A satin strap fitted with a pin buckle sets the finishing touch to this watch.
El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th The El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th is the world's most precise series-made chronograph equipped with a Striking 10th function and its three coloured counters enabling tenth of a second reading. Complete with its flyback function, this top-flight instrument proves particularly useful for pilots, since it enables them to stop, reset and restart the chronograph in one smooth move.
The Stratos worn by supersonic skydiver Felix Baumgartner has experienced a similar destiny, accompanying him in his jump secured to his right arm over his spacesuit and in direct contact with the exterior. Despite the massive accelerations, temperature differences and variations in atmospheric pressure encountered during the 9 minutes and 18 seconds of the jump, the El Primero chronograph was running as smoothly as ever upon its return to terra firma. Pilot Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 GMT This 48 mm-diameter model features a wide grooved and screw-locked crown, imposing Arabic numerals entirely made of white Superluminova displaying the time, as well as a large matt black dial - forming a backdrop against which the finely satin-brushed ruthenium black, Superluminova-enhanced hands stand out clearly and visibily. The solid caseback is composed of a medallion struck with the effigy of a Bleriot plane and bearing the inscription: "Montre d'Aeronef Type 2 - ZENITH Flying Instruments". In a nod to the Swiss civil aviation registration system, the letters HB appear on the side of the case, followed by a figure referring to the model's series number.
Powered by an automatic Zenith Elite 693 movement with a 50-hour power reserve, this steel model with a brown leather strap drives the hours, minutes, small seconds at 9 o'clock and GMT functions.
