For a number of years, luxury watchmakers have been piling into China, stocking shelves and opening up what they like to call "boutiques" even in unheard-of cities in the Middle Kingdom.

As a result of such huge investments, a number of brands and some of the world's biggest watchmaking groups have become overly dependent on sales from China. So much so that even an upbeat announcement that Swatch was now piling into India was overshadowed by a 5% drop in the parent company's share price because of the devaluation of the Chinese yuan, which penalizes exporters to the country.

Could India be a source of salvation for struggling luxury groups and brands? With its affordable Swatch brand, the Swatch Group is uniquely positioned to set up in this market that is growing at around 15% year as far as the wristwatch industry in concerned (according to the Associated Chambers of Commerce & Industry of India). But setting up in India, particularly with the lucrative monobrand, wholly-owned store concept, is no easy task.

So-called 100% FDI (foreign direct investment) projects in India require express permission from the Indian government and are permissible only for single-brand retail. Theoretically, there is also a requirement that 30% of the value of goods must be sourced from India, although it has recently been suggested that the government is likely to review this condition. A recent authorization for furniture giant IKEA and now the agreement with Swatch seem to confirm such reports.

Whatever direction government policy takes, the interest and appetite of India's growing consumer class for luxury watches is clear. For the first half of 2015 India ranked fifth in terms of visitors to WorldTempus after France, Switzerland, the United States and the United Kingdom.

On August 10th, Banderas' birthday, Cuervo y Sobrinos gave the award in front of more than 400 guests. The Latino International award is dedicated to the Latin celebrities who have reached well-deserved fame across the globe. In previous years this award has been given to prestigious personalities such as film director Pedro Almodovar, actor Andy Garcia, singer Miguel Bose, writer Mario Vargas Llosa, and musician Chucho Valdes.
During the gala Antonio Banderas expressed the great joy and thankfulness that he felt when Pilar Mata, CEO of Diarsa (official Distributor of Cuervo y Sobrinos in Spain) gave him the award. Pilar Mata confessed that she knew that he was the perfect "Latino International" when she watched the movie "The mambo kings". Banderas replied by expressing that he loves Cuervo y Sobrinos watches. During the gala he was wearing a Cuervo y Sobrinos watch, which was up for auction on that same day. Banderas also received an exclusive 'Historiador Retrogrado' watch personalized with his initials on the dial.
Cuervo y Sobrinos also helped with the Foundation ´Lágrimas y Favores´, an NGO which focuses all their efforts to the academic integration of the most disadvantaged and the palliative care of cancer patients.
Among the guests of the Gala were personalities such as singer Miguel Bose (Latino International award winner 2007), designer Miguel Palacio, and singers Alejandro Sanz, Marta Sanchez and Juan Peña.

Each year has its own theme. After exploring that of "The Gift of Time" in 2012, the Paris-based house is dedicated 2013 to sport. "Sport has always played an important role at Hermes", explains Luc Perramond, CEO of La Montre Hermes. "Passion, fair play, team work and elegance in motion are all sports-related values that also define us."
Three sports models
The Dressage line, first launched in 2003, has been beating since last year to the tempo of exclusive Manufacture movements testifying to the brand's passion for fine mechanisms. In collaboration with Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier, Hermes has this time interpreted it through a chronograph version with an opaline silvered or black dial.

Still in the equestrian world, the Arceau collection welcomes the Chrono Bridon model, which highlights an extremely original strap. Inspired by riding bridles, the small leather bit known as a bradoon reinforces the strap attachment to the case with distinctive saddle stitching.
 

In the nautical world, the sports theme is expressed in three new Clipper Sport models featuring vivid colours. The iconic bezel inspired by the portholes of the large 19th century sailboats is extended by a strap in orange, blue or Hermes red rubber.

New interpretations of the Arceau Le Temps Suspendu model
A world away from that of sport, Hermes continues to provide glimpses of a poetic universe that it has been exploring in particular depth recently. "Time to dream is a territory that we began charting two years ago with 'Le Temps Suspendu'. In this concept, technical expertise is dedicated to serving Hermes poetry and we offer people a chance to experience a very special relationship with time," points out Luc Perramond. The Arceau Le Temps Suspendu watch enables the user to bring the hours and minutes hands to a halt at around 12 o'clock, at an imaginary time, while the seconds hand in the graduated subdial continues turning, but backwards. "It is basically a playful nod," adds Luc Perramond. "This seconds hand is designed to serve as an indicator that although time has been suspended, it is in fact still running. It is also a means for us to show that one can indeed play with time and not take oneself too seriously." Available in a 38 mm diameter that is ideal for ladies' wrists, the Arceau Le Temps Suspendu 43mm equipped with a large retrograde date display now comes in two new versions: platinum and platinum set with baguette-cut diamonds.

Finally, Luc Perramond emphasises the presence of two exceptional creations at this year's edition of Baselworld, and notably the Arceau Pocket Volutes which highlights the perfect sobriety of Grand Feu enamelling on the dial, the refinement of gold marquetry, and the meticulous precision of the hand engraving adorning the cover. A unique creation testifying to Hermes' determination to perpetuate traditional crafts.

The Arceau Le temps suspendu watch conceals time and erases it from the dial whilst continuing to register its ceaseless march. This new horological complication developed exclusively for Hermes is a world first.
Behind a simple and playful gesture lies a sophisticated mechanism capable of making the user forget time via a subtle play of cams, pinions and segments. The mechanics behind the illusion are created by an additional module enabling automatic and spontaneous alternation between suspended time and standard time.

Protected by two patents - one for its construction and the other for the play-reducing gear teeth - this gem of horological engineering alone comprises no less than 24 jewels and is equipped with three play-reducing wheels. The running time and suspended time phases are coordinated by two synchronised column wheels, one driving the hours, and the other the minutes coupled with the date.
The 360° retrograde hour and minute mechanisms make time disappear without interrupting the relentless running of the movement. Each part is hand-decorated in Switzerland with circular graining, engraving and Côtes de Geneve, according to the finest watchmaking traditions.
The 43 mm-diameter gold or steel case gives the watch generous scope for expression. The herringbone guilloche dial motif bears the Hermes hallmark, while the contrasting retrograde indications are enhanced by a delicately grained finish. The asymmetrical design created by the winding crown placed at 2 o'clock hints that harmony can stem from paradoxes… Such as that of deliberately eclipsing time before willingly rejoining it.
The rose gold model initially issued in a limited edition now comes with a choice of two dial colours: silvered or chocolate brown.
