  • Louis Moinet - RED DOT: How Design Ticks

Out of 4,515 registered entries to the annual Red Dot design prize, more than 1,000 actually received the coveted recognition in two categories, "Living" and "Doing." Of these, only 60 entrants were awarded the honor of becoming the "best of the best," representing just 1.3 percent of all entries: 30 each in the Living and Doing categories. The best of the best are not otherwise category-referenced, but represent a cross section of what the jury found to be the best industrial designs submitted, regardless of categorization or the objects' purpose.
The companies and design studios awarded with the coveted "best of" prizes by the 30 international design expert judges from 19 different countries are of world renown. These laureates included Porsche (for the Carrera S), Apple for the iPad 2 and its truly innovative cover, Toshiba for a backup disk, and Porsche Design for two products: an outside television and a leather blazer - the only piece of clothing given the award on July 2. Porsche and Porsche Design, in fact, went home with a combined total of four awards that evening, a fitting tribute to Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, who passed away on April 5 of this year.

    Red Dot Watches
Among these objects and names of world renown, one watch brand had the honor of being included: Ventura, who was awarded this highest design honor for the inimitable mechanical quartz Sparc MGS with its visible rotor on top of the case.

Ventura founder and owner Pierre Nobs and the designer of this interesting watch, Simon Husslein, could hardly have expressed more joy over the honor. Nobs, already having been awarded this highest of design honors for the timepiece simply called Watch designed by Flemming Bo Hansen in 1992 - followed by other awards in 1995 (best of the best), 1998 (Red Dot) and 2000 (Red Dot) - should have been old hat at this. However, his joy seemed unbridled, and the reason is fairly clear: the 2007 bankruptcy of the company he originally founded in 1989 was surely a large personal blow. Able to resurrect the brand in 2009 (

), the Sparc MGS has become Ventura's new flagship - and a successful one that expresses Nobs' decades of accumulated knowledge and experience.

Husslein, the relatively young designer of this watch, had perhaps even more reason for joy at this confirmation of his abilities. His place of business is Studio Hanneswettstein, the Zurich design establishment founded by industrial designer Hannes Wettstein (

), who passed away in 2008. Wettstein collaborated with Nobs on a number of Ventura timepieces as well as with Nomos on the Zurich series.
Husslein joined the team in 1999 and began work with Wettstein on the Ventura Sparc FX. "It is wonderful that Pierre had so much trust in us and our agency, even after Hannes's death," Husslein said. He describes the Sparc MGS as "typical of Wettstein's philosophy and style, but the next generation. In a certain way, it is an evolution of Wettstein's first designs."

Out of the many watches submitted to the 2012 Red Dot jury, nine received Red Dot citations: the Louis Moinet Geograph, Maurice Lacroix's Masterpiece Roue Carree Seconde and the second-generation 43 mm Double Retrograde, Duo 24, Jacob Jensen 700 Series, Mutewatch Touchscreen, Halda Space Discovery, and the Porsche Design P'6620 Dashboard. The Ventura Sparc MGS topped the heap by winning the "best of the best," which was celebrated at a gala event at the Aalto Theater and an exhibition at the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen on July 2. The honor makes Ventura's Sparc MGS one of the 60 best industrially created objects to be released in 2011 in the eyes of Red Dot - the most coveted design prize in the world. "The design of the Sparc MGS is a skillful presentation of innovative technology. It features a highly functional and ergonomic implementation. It is a successful merging of tradition and modernity," the jury aptly wrote in the official Red Dot yearbook.

  • Las Vegas Show - Highlighting Watches

    WORLDTEMPUS - June 7, 2011

When it was announced at the close of last year's shows that the 2011 JCK Show would not be held at the Sands Convention Center, many were up in arms. It moved to the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, located at the opposite end of the Strip from the Wynn, where the Couture show is held. Shows organizers and exhibitors feared that retailers would not know which show to attend, certain they couldn't split their time between both. The shows opened as scheduled - with Mandalay Bay and its adjoining convention center the new home for the Swiss Watch by JCK, JCK, and Luxury shows - sort of.

    The Logistics
The Swiss Watch by JCK show was predominantly held in suites of Mandalay Bay's hotel. The LVMH Group opted to exhibit at Swiss Watch by JCK at this venue, while Breitling and a few others elected to participate at the Four Seasons Hotel. These two hotels are connected through the lobby of the Mandalay Bay. Since it was a real time commitment to get from the Couture Show at the Wynn to the JCK show at Mandalay Bay and vice versa, Couture provided shuttle bus transportation between both shows during show hours. The JCK show, with new floor organization due to the new venue, took some getting used to for routined retailers and journalists.

    JCK Show Floor

On the show floor, the Hall of Time watch exhibitors seemed somewhat disgruntled. Certain brands wishing to remain anonymous were disconcerted with their position. Several even mentioned that they were asked to pay a premium for a space close to the doors, or for another supposed high-traffic area, though in reality the area left them hanging at one end of an aisle. Still, traffic seemed up and buyers I spoke to - when they weren't grumbling over the time they were losing because of being lost or shuffling between four hotels and various suites - seemed interested in scoping out new product.
Exhibitors at the JCK Show on the show floor included newcomers such as Vulcain, back on the U.S. market for the first time in years, exciting new fashion brand IZOD, and Rumba Time, an incredibly affordable brand with creative new ideas. Other exhibitors included established brands such as Luminox, Reactor, Modus and Timex.
"We have been very busy. There has been a steady stream of retailers coming through," said Yanir Gvirtzman, CEO of Divino, North American distributors of Italian-made Officina Del Tempo timepieces.

    Swiss Watch by JCK
Swiss Watch by JCK is concurrent with the JCK Las Vegas Show and held in luxury suites of varying sizes. Exhibitors here typically rented their suites for Friday, Saturday and Sunday (even though the show floor was opened from Friday through Monday), and worked via appointment-only meetings with retailers and press. As previously mentioned, this year instead of the suites all being in one hotel, they were somewhat scattered - at the request, it would seem, of the brands. The majority, however, were located in the Mandalay Bay hotel.
"We are very pleased with the Mandalay Bay suites, they are new and spacious. We know some of the retailers are unhappy about the location this year, but everyone hates change initially. It will take some getting used to," said Ron Stoll, head of Carl F. Bucherer in the United States.

Others exhibiting in suites this year included Ulysse Nardin, Cuervo y Sobrinos, Frederique Constant, Maurice Lacroix, Tissot, Hamilton, and Longines.

    Couture
At the simultaneously competing Couture show taking place up the Strip at the Wynn, it was fairly status quo. While some watch brands such as Breitling and Fendi left Couture to exhibit at JCK, others including Bell & Ross and a host of independents such as those distributed in the USA by Totally Worth It (Hautlence, Linde Werdelin, Armin Strom and Ladoire) migrated to Couture, where brands exhibit either on the show floor, in suites or in luxurious "villas."
"We moved here to take a villa because we wanted a truly luxurious setting," said Stacie Orloff, president of Bell &Ross in the United States. "We are very happy here."
Among the brands on the show floor were Tutima, Ernst Benz, Ball Watch, SEAH, Philip Stein, and newcomer Gerge. Brands exhibiting in suites included Ellicott, Franc Vila, Bedat, Peter Speake-Marin, Totally Worth It, and Bremont.
    Show Time
New this year was the Couture Time by Watch Journal concept - created and sponsored by the magazine of the same name- to bring more attention to the watch companies. Under this umbrella, the inauguration of what will become an annual event took place: the Couture Time watch contest. This juried event was open to all watch exhibitors, each of which was allowed to enter one watch for one of three categories: Watch Architecture; Technical Excellence; and Innovation. Nearly 100 percent of the brands exhibiting participated. Winners honored at the award presentation included Peter Speake-Marin with the Marin 2MK1 Thalassa for Technical Excellence, Ladoire with Mr. Green for Architecture, and Christophe Claret with 21 Blackjack for Innovation.

  • Chronicle - A new Flieger

    17th September 2009 - www.fratellowatches.com

Picture yourself, or perhaps it is even reality for you, that you are in the luxury position to buy a new wristwatch. Are you going to settle for an IWC, Omega, Rolex, Breitling or any of the other settled brands or do you dare to step out of the comfort zone and spend your money on a relatively new label like Maurice Lacroix, Sinn or even newer… a Kobold or a Bremont for example.
I am the first to admit that it feels very safe to pick up an IWC Flieger chronograph for example. You can even do this without seeing one. You know how it looks like, feels like and you know that the quality and after sales service will be spot on. On the other hand, you will also be one of the many that will own one of the IWC Flieger chronographs. Nothing wrong with that, but you can also try something different for a change.
For about the same price, you can have something entirely new & different. Admitted, the IWC Flieger chronograph is a proven watch, evoluted through the years of its existence and the finish is superb. You also know that you are going to pay for the label, the luxury headoffice and the overhead of support staff at the IWC factory in Schaffhausen. On the other hand, a Bremont isn't significally cheaper, because you will have to pay for the R&D and the product itself, since Bremont has a lower quantity of watchcases to be made, higher purchase amounts for parts from suppliers etc. etc.

When buying a Bremont watch, you won't exactly be a test bunny (in case you got this feeling), because the watches are being exposed to some severe testing procedures. What to think about the Bremont Alt1-P model, tried & tested by mountaineer and adventurer Bear Grylls. A number of other adventurers have tried & tested the Bremont watches in various places where most Bremont watches probably won't end up (the so called desk divers).

Having a fancy look and a decent mechanical self winding movement is not enough for the brothers Nick and Giles English (owners of Bremont) to introduce a new wristwatch. Both have their roots in the aviation world, they know how important innovation and durability is. This shows in the way the case of the Bremont watches is constructed for example. The Trip-Tick construction allows Bremont to use different materials for all three parts of the case (bezel & crystal, central watch case and case back), to be able to influence the weight and look of each wristwatch.

Furthermore, each Bremont watch case is treated for hardness with a special technology (called B-EBE2000). This means that every case is heat-treated, defused with carbon and then bombarded with electrons, creating a watchcase with a hardness 2000 on the Vickers scale. In other (and more simpler) words, the Bremont watch cases are about 9 times as hard and scratch resistant than the regular stainless steel watch case.
Bremont uses Soprod/ETA (including Valjoux) movements and have them chronometer certified (COSC = Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres). All watches are assembled and tested in the watchfactory in Bienne / Switzerland. Bremont refers to their movements as BE-xx.
All in all, Bremont creates very interesting watches for people who want to step-out of the ordinary and let innovation, design and technology come first instead of a well-known label.
Prices start at 2150 UK Pound for the BC-S1 collection (non-chronograph) and chronograph models start at 3100 UK Pound, with leather straps. All models are available with stainless steel bracelets as well.

  • Maurice Lacroix - Reward for the Masterpiece Squelette

    Revue FH - 14 May 2009
The 2009 Red Dot design prize was awarded to the Masterpiece Squelette watch by Maurice Lacroix in its rose gold version, which found favour with the international jury of experts ahead of 3,231 other products from 49 countries submitted for its consideration.
The Red Dot design prize, established in 1955, is today the most famous design competition in the world. The jury bases its decisions on criteria such as ergonomics, quality and the level of innovation of the product.
In 2007, the firm hit the headlines when the Pontos Decentrique GMT won the Red Dot Best of the Best prize. This new distinction demonstrates the high level of design know-how of the Saignelegier based manufactory.
