  • Summer adventures - Highlights of the Last Quarter

    GMT n°29 - Fall 2012

The sky still hasn't fallen on our heads. Watch exports are still doing well : +15% on an annual basis for the month of July and +12.7% in August. Parallel to this, signs of tension are reappearing in the labour market in the watchmaking valleys. It is going to be tough to train the 3,200 new employees required by the sector by 2016, above all given that the watchmaking job market already welcomed 4,200 people between 2010 and 2011. Large listed groups like Richemont and the Swatch Group remain cautious about their medium-term outlook. A slowing of growth in China has been announced. During 2012 and 2013, it is expected to remain above...7.5%. It is not yet time to get out the life rafts.

    Departures and associations

Someone leaves and someone else arrives. Swatch Group administrator and responsible for the Swatch brand, Ms Arlette Emch, suddenly retired at the strictly legal age of 65. Her responsibilities have been taken over by Mr Nick Hayek, CEO of the group. On the other hand, Audemars Piguet has appointed a new CEO - Mr François-Henry Bennahmias, hitherto president of the brand's American subsidiary, who is also taking over ad interim Mr. Wolfgang Sickenberg's responsibilities as sales director. Contrary to these separations, we have the pleasure of announcing a wedding - or at least an engagement. Bovet has signed an agreement with Zurich distributor, DKSH. The latter, already a major shareholder of Maurice Lacroix, has acquired 20% of the Fleurier brand and will cover the centralised distribution for the Asian sector.

    Openings and launches

Le Sentier has finally re-opened its museum. The Espace Horloger de la Vallee de Joux (EHVJ) was inaugurated after eight months of renovations. Some 60 kilometres from here, the 12th Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix is getting ready. Under the auspices of Mr Carlo Lamprecht, the 70 candidate watches, divided into seven categories, are now being selected. The winners will be announced on Thursday, November 15th. The other long awaited competition will take place in 2013. The Concours International de Chronometrie (International Timing Competition) in Le Locle will organise its third event, confirming the validity of its concept as well as the prevailing interest in an objective confrontation between the brands. On the glamour front, two important launches have taken place. Cartier Manufacture welcomed the introduction of lubricantfree Concept Watch, ID2, made of transparent ceramic, amongst other innovations. The other new release focuses on the power of its aesthetic appeal. Bulgari's Octo has been rethought and launched with great pomp and ceremony in Rome. It is angular and unique and makes an impact which has always been the Italian brand's strength. On this national note, a little word about the Olympic Games' Swiss-Jamaican duo. Richard Mille and Hublot were on the podium. Respective sponsors of Yohan Blake and Usain Bolt, they dominated the 100 metres, the 200 metres and the 4x100m relay, no less...

  • Maurice Lacroix - The Classiques Tradition

Timeless design and first-class handiwork characterize the quality of the Swiss watchmaker's art: this is proven by the new timepieces in pink gold or steel in the Les Classiques Tradition collection, a subcollection of the Classiques models that have already been established for many years.

Their sober, compelling appearance manifests respect for the centuries-old tradition of craftsmanship. Their restrained elegance, highlighted in particular by the slim case and simple beauty of the dial, emphasizes the quality that these models display on their wearers' wrists.
This model is available in a steel case with a choice of two different dials, in a 38 mm men's version and a somewhat smaller one, of 28 mm, for ladies. The model with the (18 Kt) gold case also comes with two dial variants and a men's or ladies' version for each one. The delicate hours, minutes and seconds hands in this classically elegant setting, plated with rhodium or pink gold, concentrate on the essential: the time. The only additional feature is the understated date display at 6 o'clock.

Then there is the automatic caliber ML 155/ ML 132 (men's / ladies' models), with its precision and its slim case, tokens of reliability and classical and modern styling in equal measure, which can be examined in detail, thanks to its domed sapphire crystal case back. The decoration, in the highest traditions of craftsmanship - the weight with Côtes de Geneve, the bridges with circular-graining and the gold- or rhodium-plated rotor - are a delight to the eye.
Les Classiques Tradition, with these new models, is a collection that symbolizes the refined harmony of Swiss quality and style.

  • Maurice Lacroix - Masterpiece Lune Retrograde

The sheer epitome of Maurice Lacroix expertise, the watches of the Masterpiece Collection capture the urbanity, dynamism and elegance of the 21st century. As the brand's flagship, this collection is brilliantly masterful in its interpretation of complications, including the retrograde and moon indications over which Maurice Lacroix has shown such total mastery over the years.

While the Masterpieces previously developed alongside manual winding mechanisms, last year saw them adopt automatic calibers for the first time. In 2012, the collection continues to expand, revisiting its longstanding manual expertise with a new version of the incredible Masterpiece Roue Carree Seconde. Meanwhile, the new Masterpiece Lune Retrograde further enhances the range with a new self-winding anufacture movement that subscribes to the highest standards of traditional mechanical watchmaking.

The modernist design reflects the quest for innovation encapsulated by the brand's "Never Stop Moving" advertising campaign launched last year. While the notion of movement is always at the heart of each timepiece, each design is also driven by innovation. In this collection, time is a form of expression that is never compromised.

Masterpiece Lune RetrogradeA new automatic movement from the Manufacture

Hewn in steel, the Masterpiece Lune Retrograde is a subtle fusion of contemporary spirit and experienced craftsmanship. Presenting two complications held in great esteem by Maurice Lacroix, the Masterpiece Lune Retrograde opts to capture time in a 43 mm diameter case, thus renewing its links with a more traditional size. Water resistant to 50 meters, it alternates satin and polished finishes without ostentation, displaying its craftsmanship with impressive clarity. A deep sense of authenticity springs from its blue dial, imbuing time with unquestionable maturity.

The slightly raised time markers - subtle despite their high-tech engineering - are emphasized by the satin sunburst finish of the dial whose royal blue testifies to the nobility of their craftsmanship. Encircled by a hand display marking the days of the week, the moon asserts itself at 6 o'clock. It turns on a black disk in striking chiaroscuro, as if the skies themselves were within reach. The calendar is housed at 10 o'clock in a wide retrograde arch, while the power reserve is dynamically displayed at 2 o'clock. Enhanced by a crescent of applique hour markers that gradually fan out, it evokes a real sense of movement. The hours and minutes adopt the traditional central position so as not to disturb the almost architectural balance of the piece. In a striking play of light, their slender hands are graced with a diamond finish enhanced still further by a slight curve, an additional detail that ensures complete legibility.

The self-winding ML 192 movement, manufactured entirely in-house, bears the stamp of the highest Swiss watchmaking traditions. Its workings, down to the smallest component, are revealed by the sapphire crystal case, while its brushed vertical and Grand Colimaçon finishes reflect the light down to the jewels themselves.

The new Masterpiece Lune Retrograde comes with an optional leather strap and is available with dials in slate and silver/gold two-tone. Its particularly competitive position on the market for manufacture watches confirms the desire of Maurice Lacroix to expand its range while remaining ever-attentive to the expectations of a demanding public.

  • Martin Braun - Reboot for Martin Braun

    WORLDTEMPUS - 8 February 2011
The watch world has been talking about it for a while, and glimpses seen on various wrists at GTE in January made it clear that collectors would soon be graced with a new line of watches. While their maker is familiar to collectors, the look and feel of these new masterpieces will not be.
Gone are the astronomical developments that sealed Martin Braun's reputation as an innovative movement designer. It should come as no surprise that Braun's new horological offerings will include unprecedented technical elements, particularly in the debut timepiece that will be the star of the show at Baselworld. This perpetual calendar adds a new twist to an old theme. Its manually wound movement featuring an integrated perpetual calendar (not a module) holds power for six full days, and its clearly legible large date is unusually positioned. The entirety of the design harmonizes well with the new movement—so well in fact that the waiting watch world may be well inclined to forget its need for back-to-basic, retro-styled looks that the major brands are currently pushing.
    Professionals
Braun's new marque—in addition to its alter ego, movement manufacturer MHO—was founded with the financial backing of Swiss entrepreneur Antoine Meier. Soon thereafter Braun, who says, "We aim to go beyond existing boundaries and to give unconventional ideas a chance," hired an experienced industry executive to run the new venture.
Bruno Jufer, previously employed with Maurice Lacroix, Jaquet Droz, and Zenith, was most recently a member of Carl F. Bucherer's executive management. He describes his new place of employment as "a benchmark for innovative technology in movement construction and unique watch design." These are no light comments coming from a man of his experience, with Braun quickly adding that Antoine Martin—a name that is easily pronounced in every language and chosen to represent its two founding visionaries—was born under Jufer's professional tutelage.
No predefined routes are scheduled to be followed by this new company, which should keep collectors on their toes. Stay tuned to Worldtempus for the entire story as it unfolds.

  • Hanhart - Thomas Morf

After completing his basic technical education, Thomas Morf's career soon led him abroad, where he was responsible for managing projects focusing on the commissioning of thermal turbomachinery. He was then attracted to the IT business for a while, undertaking a period of on-the-job training to gain a qualification in business administration. As an ardent lover of timepieces, he moved to the Swiss watch brand Maurice Lacroix in 1995 and spent time living in the Far East in his capacity as the Director Asia/Pacific. Equipped with this valuable experience and knowledge, he joined the Bucherer Group in 2001 as CEO of Carl F. Bucherer. He not only developed the brand into an independent company within the group, but by taking advantage of the brand's own movements and manufacture workshops for producing mechanical calibres and functional modules, he also developed it into a widely recognised manufacturer.
On 1 October 2010, Thomas Morf took over as CEO of the watch brand Hanhart, which has its registered offices in Diessenhofen in the Swiss Canton of Thurgau and in Gutenbach, Germany. He is also a shareholder in the company.
Tradition and expertise in precision timekeeping
The Swiss-German watch brand Hanhart is known for its high-precision, 100% reliable and robust instrument watches for use in the air, on the land and on the sea. It combines cutting-edge Swiss and German knowledge and skills with the long-standing tradition and expertise of its own manufactory, which has its origins in the watch business established by Johann A. Hanhart in Diessenhofen in 1882. The company, which remains the leading manufacturer of premium timepieces to this very day, not only launched the first affordable mechanical stopwatch in 1924, but it also began manufacturing wristwatches at an early stage at its production site in Gutenbach, southern Germany. These included the single-button "Calibre 40" chronograph as well as the legendary "Calibre 41" and "Tachy Tele" pilot's chronographs, which date back to 1939. These chronographs are steeped in history, and today their replicas have become coveted collector's pieces and connoisseur's items for those with a penchant for fine precision watches. The design and technology of the Pioneer watch models are based on Hanhart's long tradition and its legendary chronographs. They therefore include features such as the unmistakable red reset button, the typical "bicompax" dial design as well as the asymmetrical button arrangement - which has been the trademark characteristics of the brand's chronographs right from the start. Just like all Hanhart watches, they stand out thanks to their perfect functionality and immaculate readability.Working in close collaboration with the brand's own manufacture workshops in Gutenbach and highly specialised suppliers from the Swiss watch sector, a new, progressively designed collection of mechanical chronographs was developed under the name "Primus" in 2009. It combines historical features - such as the unmistakeable red button, which has distinguished Hanhart watches since 1939 and was previously intended to prevent pilots from unintentionally resetting the stop time - with the latest technology and progressive design. The Pilot, Racer and Diver models are based on the brand's core competence: competence: high-precision, extremely reliable and robust instrument watches for use in the air, on the land and on the sea.High-quality mechanical stopwatches under the name ClassicTimer, manufactured over several production stages in the Gutenbach factory, still represent a key product segment for Hanhart. Used in the past at all the important motor races, today these stopwatches are most popular among ambitious vintage car rally drivers.Over the next few years, the further expansion of Hanhart's home markets of Germany and Switzerland as well as key export markets will become increasingly important. Both the wristwatches and the mechanical stopwatches from the ClassicTimer collection are already available from selected specialist retailers in many countries.
