  • Chopard - Imperiale 36mm Joaillerie

Inspired by the Romain era, the Imperiale watch appeals first and foremost by its harmonious proportions and refined details. The serene strength of its details distils a wealth of characteristics that are all nods to the heyday of the imperial age. Roman numerals punctuate the dial, while the curved hands are reminiscent of the tapered daggers used by sovereigns in battle. The shape of the lugs reflects the tradition of ancient columns famed for their perfectly balanced proportions. Finally, a diamond-set crown delicately curved like a lotus flower is fitted on the case middle with its pure, sleek sides designed to give the model a lighter touch and an even more lustrous glow. The sheer wealth and finesse of its details make the Imperiale collection an eminently feminine model that echoes the spirit and the splendour of imperial classicism.

The new Imperiale 36mm Joaillerie model beats to the rhythm of a self-winding movement and reprises the collection's design codes with a regal bearing: the dial appears adorned with magnificently shimmering Tahiti mother-of-pearl, while the bezel and the lug-covers are entirely set with diamonds. The fascinating dial reflections, together with the radiance of diamonds, create a luminous harmony to which a subtle silver-toned brushed canvas strap sets the perfect crowning touch.

  • Watch certifications

Watchmaking brands tend to be self-validated. Calling upon either history, craft or technique, they rely on their reputation, claiming it is sufficient proof that their products are of value. And we are expected to take their word for it. But there is a logic to having  certain aspects certified by third parties. Three institutions are known to certify the broader and finer points of watchmaking quality. Many brands pick just one of these. But only one of them uses all three, sometimes in combination: Chopard.

The Geneva-based brand has manufacturing facilities in Fleurier. This double nationality so to speak gives it access to the two most sophisticated certification processes the watch industry has to offer. The first is the Hallmark of Geneva. It is a quality control process aimed at making sure that both case and movement are of superior quality. The criteria include aesthetics, finishes, technical demands such as the shape of springs and the accuracy of the encased movement. Chopard assembles and regulates some of its finer L.U.C timepieces, for which is masters the development and manufacturing process in-house, in its Geneva workshops. And for nearly twenty years, the L.U.C collection has been of the utmost refinement. These three facts combined make Chopard an avid and worthy user of the Hallmark of Geneva.

Only a handful of brands are based in Fleurier, and they are united in creating and running the Fondation Qualite Fleurier (or FQF). It is the most demanding certification a watch can obtain. This difficulty comes from the fact that the Qualite Fleurier label is only awarded after an encased movement has gone through a process that recreates the reality of being worn on one's wrist among other ordeals. As a founder and promoter of the FQF, Chopard regularly offers watches that have proved worthy of that certification too. Actually, it is the brand that uses it the most.

As for the third certification available, Chopard is by far not its biggest user, although most of its mechanical timepieces are certified to be chronometers by the COSC. A very Swiss institution, the COSC is the largest certification body in watchmaking. It certifies that a movement stays within a certain margin of accuracy even when fully or half wound, in 5 different positions and 3 temperatures over 15 days. For example, all of Chopard's Mille Miglia watches are certified chronometers.

Chopard is the only brand to use all three certifications. They sometimes even use several together for the same watch. They went as far as using all three in the L.U.C. Triple Certification. More recently, the L.U.C 1963 Tourbillon was both stamped with the Geneva Seal and the COSC.

The question remains as to why Chopard behaves that way. Its president Karl-Friedrich Scheufele answers thus: "The external certifications our watches or movements undergo confirm and guarantee the credibility of our manufacturing process. They bring an outside and independent look on our production. They guarantee our clients the great care that went into the movement finishes (Geneva Hallmark and QF), as well as the chronometric precision (COSC) or the overall reliability of our products (QF)". No need to take their word for it, someone else guarantees that Chopard's watches are of superior quality, even if your eyes or experience tell you so anyway. There is an added benefit to submitting timepieces to such judgement. "Doing so has largely contributed to making our products better and more reliable over the years, and has helped our R&D, for instance with the results from the FQF's simulated wearing tests," adds Mr. Scheufele.

Yet, that still wasn't enough for Chopard. So in late 2014, the brand released its first Fairmined gold watch, the L.U.C Tourbillon Qualite Fleurier Fairmined. One of their new watches for 2015 is the L.U.C XPS Fairmined. Its case is made of Colombian gold mined according to a specific set of rules regarding the living conditions of the miners, environmental demands and fair-trade conditions. That gold is also used for jewellery purposes, but more and more Chopard watches will have an added ethical benefit on top of their proof of watchmaking quality.

  • Chopard - Mille Miglia 2015 Race Edition

Since 1988, Chopard has been the partner and official timekeeper of the prestigious Mille Miglia, which sees this year 430 classic cars compete over four days along a route stretching one thousand miles and winding through the most stunning Italian scenery between Brescia and Rome.
Born of the personal passion for classic racing cars nurtured by Chopard's Co-President, Karl-Friedrich Scheufeule - alos an active driver who takes part in the race personally each year - this link between Chopard and classic racing gave birth to the Mille Miglia watche collection. Each year, a limited series dedicated to the race is specially created.

Issued in limited series of 1,000 in steel and 100 in rose gold respectively, the Mille Miglia 2015 Race Edition picks up the design codes of the classic cars that took part in the Italian race between 1940 and 1957. On the varnished dial, the emblematic "Rosso Corsa" red colour reigns supreme. This watch face, with its black and white touches, recalls the new Mille Miglia GTS watches presented by Chopard at Baselworld 2015. The power-reserve indicator is reminiscent of typical 1950s petrol gauges, while the oversized 6 and 12 o'clock Arabic numerals echo the dashboards of vintage cars. In a nod to the participant numbers placed on the doors and bonnet of the competing vehicles, the date window appears clearly on a white background in the Mille Miglia red arrow-shaped logo.

The Mille Miglia 2015 Race Edition comes in a sturdy 43 mm-diameter case in 18-carat rose gold or steel, topped by a bezel with a black aluminium graduated insert.
The black Barenia leather calfskin strap is secured by an 18-carat rose gold or steel folding clasp.

The screw-down back guaranteeing water resistance to 100 metres is engraved with the inscriptions "Mille Miglia" and "Brescia > Rome > Brescia" and fitted with a transparent sapphire crystal pane revealing the Chopard movement and its openworked oscillating weight.
This movement is the mechanical self-winding Chopard Calibre 01.08-C, entirely developed, designed and assembled in the Chopard's Fleurier Ebauches workshops. COSC-certified, it ensures extreme precision in driving the hours, minutes and seconds indications, as well as a date appearing at 3 o'clock and a power-reserve display at 9 o'clock and is endowed with an approximately 60-hour power reserve.

  • Chopard - Happy Sport 30mm Automatic

Firmly committed to innovation and unceasingly renewed creativity, the Geneva-based Manufacture brings the Happy Sport Automatic to a whole new scale. Its proportions have been redefined in a "mini" version - graced with a dainty 30mm case - while maintaining the self-winding movement introduced in 2013 with the 36mm model.

In 1993, Caroline Scheufele, Chopard Co-President and Artistic Director, designed a sporty watch based on an original design in an unexpected combination - steel and diamonds. The Happy Sport was born. True to the spirit of Happy Diamonds, these gems dancing freely between two sapphire crystals soon became a symbol of Chopard and feminine watchmaking as a whole. In 2013, Chopard celebrated the 20th anniversary of this watch with the development of a mechanical model - the Happy Sport Medium Automatic - featuring redesigned lines and details.

The new Happy Sport 30mm Automatic is available with a polished steel or diamond-set case. Five floating diamonds whirl about its silver-toned dial featuring a spiral guilloche centre pattern. The crown, also made of steel, is set with a blue sapphire, while the steel bracelet or alligator leather strap accentuates the singularly graceful appeal of this model.

  • Chopard - L.U.C Lunar Big Date

Nestling within its 18-carat rose gold case, the new L.U.C Lunar Big Date exudes a poetic touch that will captivate the most seasoned connoisseurs. A horological complication in its own right, the moon phase attains such high accuracy that the difference between the actual lunar cycle and the indication of the timepiece amounts to just one day every 122 years. This exceptional model is available in a limited edition of just 500.
What could be more inspiring than to stay in permanent touch with the Moon? With its portion of the night sky visible on the dial, the new L.U.C Lunar Big Date is a vivid reminder of the enduring ties between our time and the stars. The moon phase is associated here with the central hour and minute hands, a large date display at 12 o'clock and a small seconds indication between 4 and 5 o'clock. The proprietary self-winding L.U.C Calibre 96 LD is housed with a generous 42 mm case in 18-carat rose gold framing a silvered guilloche dial elegantly studded with Arabic numerals.
The vision of the Moon seen from Earth changes in time with its rotation: its visible side may be completely lit up by the Sun (full Moon), entirely plunged into the dark (new Moon) or only partially illuminated (various moon phases). The interval between two identical moon phases - called a month or a synodical revolution - is equivalent to 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.8 seconds.
Achieving such accuracy in a wristwatch is an extremely complex feat to which Chopard Manufacture has risen with significant talent. The L.U.C Lunar Big Date is thus endowed with an extremely precise device in which the wheel driving the moon-bearing disc comprises 135 teeth. The indication has such precision that the discrepancy between the mechanism and the real lunar cycle amounts to just one day in 122 years. The various moon phases are visible for both Northern and Southern hemispheres through a particularly large aperture ensuring easy readability. In addition, the Northern part of the disc features the Big Dipper constellation, while the Southern part displays the Southern Cross.
Two stacked co-axial barrels ensures a 65-hour supply of energy to the movement with its balance oscillating at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Chronometer-certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC), the movement is visible through the exhibition case-back. Fitted with a brown or black hand-sewn alligator leather strap complete with folding clasp, the L.U.C Lunar Big Date is issued in a limited, numbered series of 500, for its most discerning admirers.
