The new L.U.C XPS 35mm Esprit de Fleurier model, set with diamonds and intended for women, shines as much by its elegance as by the beauty of its Chopard Manufacture movement.

Viewed from the front, the diamond-set 18-carat white gold bezel delicately frames a mottled blue mother-of-pearl dial bearing hour-markers graced with brilliant-cut diamonds. This model is teamed with a matching blue alligator leather strap. An exhibition case-back reveals the beauty and delicacy of the manufacture movement entirely decorated with fleurisanne engravings.

A speciality of the village of Fleurier that has been home to Chopard Manufacture since 1996, fleurisanne engraving is a now almost extinct art. This highly distinctive technique is notably distinguished by its motifs carved in high relief. The engraver cuts away the surrounding metal to leave the pattern he wishes to make stand out. The raised surface is then engraved with a scrolling pattern known as 'volutes' or with flowers, and polished to achieve a shiny effect. The background is hammer-stippled to give it a grainy effect. This extremely demanding skill requires the artisan to devote considerable time to this process and to display absolute technical mastery.
Eager to revive and ensure the future of this ancient craft, Chopard has trained expert hands in-house in order to perpetuate this traditional form of engraving.

Housing a twin-barrel self-winding movement with a 65-hour power reserve inside an ultra-thin 7.10 mm case is no mean feat. The master-watchmakers of Chopard Manufacture have accomplished this by means of a clever micro-rotor construction that highlights the beauty of L.U.C Calibre 96.23-L which may be admired through the exhibition case-back.
The L.U.C XPS 35 mm models are certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC), a guarantee of precision greatly prized by Chopard and which adds to the many other intrinsic qualities of these exceptional timepieces.

Caroline Scheufele was honored at the Fashion 4 Development (F4D) annual First Ladies Luncheon, for her role in launching Chopard's "Journey to Sustainable Luxury".
The luncheon, which took place on the 23rd of September in New York, united 40 First Ladies, diplomats, fashion VIPs, and key influencers from around the globe to celebrate the unprecedented cooperation between diplomacy and fashion for the greater good of women and children worldwide. The event was co-hosted by Franca Sozzani and fashion icon, Donna Karan received the Medal of Honor. 

Over the last four years, F4D has reached global recognition and has programs in progress in 20 countries, working in support of the UN Millennium Development Goals to advance their agenda. These programs focus to promote the fashion and textile industry, advance economic and social development activities as well as preserve culture and empower women.  

More than 750 guests travelled from one movie set to another thanks to a completely rebuilt plane in the magnificent Hangar 16 at the Cannes-Mandelieu aerodrome. This immense, majestic hall made of wood, concrete and glass provided a unique location for the Backstage theme, chosen by Chopard as the common thread of its activities at the 67th Cannes Film Festival.

Top models Eva Herzigova, Adriana Lima, Petra Nemkova, Alessandra Ambrosio, Liu Wen and Arlenis Sosa, appeared in the middle of the evening, each more sparkling than the last in Chopard jewellery and Elie Saab Haute Couture dresses. Other highlights of the dinner was the enchanting performance by singer Ayo combining reggae, soul and folk rock sounds.

At 11pm, it was time to experience the second part of the evening in a completely different atmosphere. Guests were invited to enter the plane from the back entrance cross through it and exit by the front door, in order to disembark and join the other guests in the heart of a luxuriant jungle on a desert island looking like a tropical garden of Eden. A great many stars accepted Chopard's invitation to visit a movie set set in a lost paradise somewhere between fiction and reality. Among them were Colin and Livia Firth, Harvey Weinstein, Sonam Kapoor, Masami Nagasawa, Natasha Poly, Coco Rocha, Suki Waterhouse, Bianca Brandolini, Selita Ebanks, Louis-Marie de Castelbaljac and Valentina Zelyaeva. Far from feeling tired by their travels to a far-off land, guests danced until the first light of dawn, led by the legendary Kool & the Gang group.

The redesigned and refined 42 mm-diameter case in 18-carat rose gold of the L.U.C. 1937 Classic features the characteristic profile and details of this collection. Its screw-lock crown at 3 o'clock guarantees water resistance up to 100 metres. This L.U.C 1937 Classic watch beats to the rhythm of Manufacture L.U.C Calibre 01.01-L (L.U.C 1.1010) and its 28,800 vibrations per hour. This mechanical self-winding watch, chronometer-certified by the COSC, is endowed with a 60-hour power reserve. Its construction aimed at ensuring impeccable reliability drives the hours, minutes, central seconds and a window-type date display at 6 o'clock. It also has a stop-seconds function ensuring smooth and accurate time-setting. This precise and efficient calibre is a new landmark in the history of L.U.C movements, since its design enables a significant increase in production volumes and thus further enhances Chopard's independence.
Chopard is a family-owned company imbued with a b sense of independence. The various stages involved in making L.U.C watches are conducted within the group's own production sites in Meyrin and Fleurier. Movement development; design of the finished product; gold casting; stamping and machining of cases, movement parts and bracelets; traditional hand-crafted decorations; surface treatments; polishing; assembly; adjustment and quality control: this entire range of watch production operations is fully mastered in-house by Chopard and applied to the  creationof each L.U.C watch.

Endowed with an inherently technical, distinguished and sporting nature, the L.U.C Engine One is an aesthetic hybrid combining authentic automobile mechanics with Fine Watchmaking. The finishes on its Chopard Manufacture tourbillon movement evoke those typically appearing on engines, while its horizontal layout reflects the design of racing-car cockpits.  

The parallels between automobiles and watchmaking feature a depth and variety that Chopard has been consistently exploring for many years. Now the L.U.C Engine One H offers fresh proof of the watchmaker's passionate attachment to the competitive racing world and its values based on a blend of performance and pleasure. This watch is equipped, not with a V10 twin-turbo engine mounted in an aluminium chassis, but with a hand-wound calibre with a tourbillon regulator "propelling" a titanium case. While the function of these two objects is very different, their inherent spirit and the pleasure they procure are very similar.

The very best of two mechanical expressions
Designed and built by Chopard Manufacture in Fleurier, the movement of this timepiece bears the reference number L.U.C 04.02-L. The openings in its movement are a nod to the openworked design of a racing-car air intake. Engine-block cylinder heads inspired the grooves engraved on the dial-side bridges. For functional reasons, the latter are in fact an integral part of the main plate of the movement. The latter is visible from both sides of the "machine" through two flat sapphire crystal watch glasses. The interplay of polished and satin-brushed surfaces, the cut-off curves and the concave surfaces, combine to express a particularly sophisticated approach to design in both formal and ergonomic terms.
L.U.C. Engine One H provides an ideally legible display of its various items of information. While the hours and minutes are shown by central hands, the power reserve is read off on the left, much like a fuel gauge. The small seconds are fitted on the tourbillon and appear on the right, like a speedometer. Both the inner and outer sides of the alligator strap with its five rows of overstitching echo the aesthetic of automobile upholstery from the 1960s and 1970s, demonstrating the care that Chopard devotes to each and every finishing detail. 

Automobile read-off

The structure of the L.U.C Engine One H can be interpreted like that of a car. It is equipped with an engine (mechanical rather than of the internal combustion type), fitted with a single lengthways-positioned cylinder (the tourbillon). It is topped by a grooved cylinder head (its bridges) in nickel silver and steel instead of die-cast aluminium. Its engine speed is stable at around 480 revs per minute (meaning 28,800 vibrations per hour or 4 Hz). To optimise its performance, it spins on its own axis (the tourbillon). It is equipped with a transmission system (the going train). Its fuel tank (the barrel) guarantees 60 hours of running autonomy (power reserve). The cap of this fuel tank (the crown) has been enlarged to ensure an easier grip when refuelling in the pits (winding and setting to time). Its performance and precision have been verified on an independent test bench (the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute, or COSC). The engine (L.U.C Calibre 04.02-L) is mounted on shock-absorbers (chassis mounting rubbers) that help protect it from impacts. The titanium from which its bodywork (the case) is made makes it light, scratch-resistant and eminently biocompatible.
Pivoting the movement by 90 degrees enables the L.U.C Engine One H to change face without changing direction. Stemming from a highly demanding aesthetic and mechanical approach, it is in fact far more than just an automotive metaphor, since it once again symbolises Chopard's deeply embedded roots in the world of motor sports as well as its enduring horological determination.

Chopard's in-house approach to watch manufacturing
Chopard is a family business with a bly ingrained philosophy of independence. The steps involved in making L.U.C watches are all performed in-house at the group's Meyrin and Fleurier production sites. Movement development, finished product design, gold casting, stamping and cases machining, movement parts and bracelets, as well as traditional hand-crafted finishes, surface treatments, polishing, assembly, adjustments and quality controls: such is the comprehensive range of watch production operations fully mastered by Chopard and involved in the making of each watch in the L.U.C collection.
 

Like the classic cars that compete in this fascinating race, the 2010 edition of the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique Chronograph is a blend of bold aesthetics and mechanical performance. Featuring a black aluminium bezel that makes a striking contrast with its silver-coloured dial and fitted with a perforated leather strap, this chronograph is equipped with a mechanical self-winding movement chronometer-certified by the COSC. It pays tribute to the sporting spirit of this event uniting the finest classic racing cars and partnered by Chopard since 2002.
Representing the vintage version of the Formula 1 Grand Prix, the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique was created in 1998 to mark the 700th anniversary of the Grimaldi family's accession to the throne of the Principality. Raced along the same route through the streets of Monaco, it is reserved exclusively for classic racing cars, making it unique in its kind. Although initially intended as a one-off event, it created such a stir that its organisers decided to repeat it every two years.
Over the years, the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique has become a favourite meeting place for devotees of classic cars and attracts collectors from around the world, especially the USA, Great Britain, Germany, France and Italy. Every two years, it brings together over 200 vehicles, all of which were legends in their time, including models by Bugatti, Delage, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Maserati and Ferrari, as well as Formula 1 cars built before 1979 by brands such as Brabham, Lotis and Williams.

This Grand Prix de Monaco Historique Chronograph 2010 is as aesthetically and technically daring as the "speed machines" that inspired it. Its subtle silver-coloured dial is adorned with a concentric guilloche motif and luminescent hour-markers enhanced by a minute circle in black and orange on the steel version and black and blue for the gold version, as well as a black anodized aluminium bezel incorporating silver and orange or blue markers.
The Grand Prix de Monaco Historique Chronograph 2010 is available in steel either on a black perforated barenia strap complete with orange stitching, or on a steel bracelet, as well as in 18-carat rose gold on a perforated black barenia strap with blue stitching - a luxurious version in a limited edition of 250. In both cases, the wristband security is enhanced by a Chopard-engraved folding clasp in steel or 18-carat rose gold.
