  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens - The Jedi's watch

Since it will be the seventh episode in the cult saga of the seventh art, let us allow the 12th art to suggest some of its ambassadors for the main characters in the latest Star Wars film. If there was a watch in the corner of the screen throughout "The Force Awakens" it would obviously have to be one with an alarm function. A quick look at the candidates in the Striking watch category at this year's Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve, which reigns over the horological galaxy, one immediately stands out with a name that was predestined to go with the film: the Big Bang Alarm Repeater by Hublot.

But ladies first, starting with the first generation: Princess Leia Organa, head of the resistance, who is once again played by Carrie Fisher (albeit with a new hairstyle), should wear a watch that is brimming with symbols from a cult brand. What about the diamond-set Cle de Cartier Cle in white gold, whose blue sapphire cabochon on the crown could be used to open up a new dimension? New character Rey, a scavenger, joins the resistance and discovers that the force is with her. I think an Excalibur Lady by Roger Dubuis would perfectly complement her equipment. She fights alongside Finn, a young stormtrooper who deserted to find the right path, no doubt thanks to his TAG Heuer Carrera Connected.

"May the force be with you"
Holed up in the mountains, the old sage Lor San Tekka exudes intemporal elegance in a universe that is high-tech by definition. The Piaget Altiplano 900P would fit him like a glove. As the best pilot of the resistance and given his rebellious nature, Poe Dameron needs a watch that fits his talent and ambition. I see him proudly wearing an IWC Big Pilot Top Gun Perpetual Calendar. Nostalgic for his Millennium Falcon, the most famous vessel in the Star Wars era, the now venerable Han Solo deserves a watch from a legendary brand that fits his charisma. The galaxial blue of the Patek Philippe Calatrava Pilot Travel Time could be the latest treasure of this former smuggler. His loyal companion Chewbacca, the hairy but kind-hearted Wookie, could adorn his fur with a Bell&Ross BR01 Skull Bronze. As for C-3PO, would he prefer a gold watch with a gold bracelet to match the lustre of his body, or the light of HYT's H4 Metropolis? The complex personality of the Jedi Knight himself, Luke Skywalker, needs a watch commensurate with his status as a talented hero travelling through space: the Montblanc Timewalker Pilot.

    "I am your father…"
Among the baddies who will be resurfacing in the Force Awakens are Supreme Leader Snoke, who heads the totalitarian regime of the First Order and for whom only a Richard Mille RM 052 Skull could reflect his exclusive power and at the same time clearly show which side of the Force he is on. Under his authority, Kylo Ren wields own special cruciform lightsabre and the Perrelet Turbine Toxic would undoubtedly be a must-have in his arsenal. He adheres to a cult without limits reminiscent of the ancestral figure of Darth Vader, who passed to the dark side of the Force but sacrificed himself for his son. Could his soul have become as pure and singular as the sombre dial of the Endeavour Perpetual Calendar Concept, which does not even bear the logo of H. Moser & Cie?

In the meantime, the celestial jousting among watch brands continues in the Christmas window displays and you will never be able to watch Star Wars in the same way again.

  • Christie's - Watch Sale Totalling US - 29.1 Million

    Christie's leading watch team

obtained such an extraordinary performance from the combination of carefully selected watches of great rarity, impeccable provenance, exceptional condition and attentive scholarship.
Aurel Bacs, International Head of Christie's Watch Department, commented: "Totaling more than US$ 29.1 million, Christie's Geneva achieved an historical result for a various owners sale. This tremendous outcome reaffirms the unrivalled position of Christie's team in the watch arena. We've never seen such an intense buying activity with enthusiastic bidding in the room, on the telephone and online, with buyers recognizing quality at all price levels. I was delighted the customized Project X Designs Rolex Sea Dweller watch offered by Sir Roger Moore sold for SFr. 75,000 to benefit UNICEF".

Patek Philippe watches played the leading role, breaking numerous world records.
Rolex, along with Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, and Cartier, also saw outstanding results, as well as independent brands such as F.P. Journe. Standouts included the 1953 Rolex „Neptune? ref. 8382 (selling for five times its estimate for SFr.609,000), a 1945 Rolex ref. 3525, and the 1910 Vacheron Constantin scarab-form pendant watch.
The top lot of the sale was a rare pink gold calendar wristwatch with moon phases, ref. 3448, manufactured in 1968 by Patek Philippe, which sold for SFr.2,099,000 / $2,338,286 / €1,700,190 (from an estimate of SFr.500,000-1,000,000), setting a world record price for this reference at auction.
This watch previously unknown, was recently rediscovered by a Christie's specialist.

Bids came from private collectors and museums as well as from investment funds, proving that quality watches are now considered a world class collector?s asset.
With 222 buyers from 39 different countries, Asia and China in particular played a pivotal role showing unprecedented depth of audience for fine collectors? watches.
James Bond's Mythical Rolex wristwatch specially adapted for 'Live and Let Die' by film production designer Syd Caine in 1972 sold immediately after the morning session for SFr. 219,000 ($243,966 / €177,390).

  • Watch Selection - Mysterious Automatic Double Axis Tourbillon by Thomas Prescher

    WORLDTEMPUS - 23 December 2010

The promise that unfolds in the words composing this watch's name is kept by the minimalistic mechanics of Thomas Prescher's latest oeuvre.
Much of Prescher's independent work has centered around the idea of making the fascination of his single and multiple-axis tourbillons eminently visible. The latest addition to his line does this in an exemplary way using one of the oldest illusions known to watchmaking to achieve it. The "mysterious" timepiece, quite popular in the nineteenth century, seems to display the time without any visible connection to the movement. During the heyday of the style, Cartier was famous for its mysterious timepieces. Following the tradition, Prescher's Mysterious Tourbillon only allows the observer to see the time, the tourbillon, and the oscillating weight within the frame of the rectangular 40 x 35 mm platinum or gold case. Crowns are placed on either side of the case; one for winding and one for setting.
Prescher not only achieves the mysterious illusion, but he does so with an automatic movement. Needless to say, the rotor for this mechanism is not the garden variety, but rather a horizontal block located at the bottom of the case that revolves in a back-and-forth motion. This oscillating block mass is also home to the displays for the date and month. The time is digitally displayed by two barrel-like disks between which a three-dimensional moon is placed to exhibit the moon phase.
Amazingly, the movement of this masterpiece contains 394 components, though all you really see are just a handful of them. The rest are hidden in what would appear to be the sides of the case, with the inside flanges acting as two base plates. Almost as a matter of course, the main object of our fascination - the double-axis tourbillon -takes center stage between the two panes of sapphire crystal and mesmerizes the eye. It, naturally, has an added kick that has never been seen before: the tourbillon cage of the first one-minute tourbillon (the second also revolves at this speed) also houses a constant force device with inertia acceleration according to Jaenneret. It reloads six times every second.

  • Patrizzi & Co - Cartier Table Clock at New York Auctions

Patrizzi & Co Opens 2010 Auction Year with Significant Cartier Timepieces and Over 150 Collector-Level Wristwatches, Pocket Watches and Clocks for March 9 Auction in New York City.

A 1929 gold-and-nephrite Cartier table clock featuring grande sonnerie chimes—one of two clocks with the most complicated mechanism ever made by the company—highlights Patrizzi & Co's first 2010 horologic auction, to be held Tuesday, March 9, in New York City with simultaneous bidding online. "Timeless Emotions - Collecting Pocket Watches, Wristwatches & Clocks" will showcase more than 150 collector-level timepieces, including an outstanding selection of vintage Cartier wristwatches, clocks and pocket watches.
"This will be the most important sale of Cartier timepieces since 1996. The table clock is exquisite. It's extremely rare to find a large Comet clock with the grand sonnerie, moon phases and calendar," said Osvaldo Patrizzi, president and chief executive officer of Patrizzi & Co. "With its distinguished history and esthetic prowess, Cartier is commanding top prices and is particularly desirable with clients in China."
Grande sonnerie striking hours marking the quarter hours is extremely rare for a Cartier desk clock. The case is in 14k yellow gold with nephrite base and side panels. Its enamel face depicts the time and phases of the moon as well as three subsidiary dials with day, alarm and date. The clock was owned by the son of New York City's youngest mayor, Hugh L. Grant, who led the city, beginning at age 31, from 1889-1892. Other Cartier pieces include several tank-style platinum men's wristwatches, a platinum minute repeater pocket watch, and a men's jeweled dress pocket watch.

Also in the sale will be two Patek Philippes Ref. 2526. This sought-after reference was the company's first wristwatch powered by an automatic movement, which ushered in the era of self-winding watches. Made in 1956, Ref. 2526 is in platinum set with diamonds, which is extremely unusual for this model. The second example is in 18k yellow gold with an enamel dial and was also made in 1956.
"These two Patek Philippes are extremely significant. You could say this movement changed the course of horology. The automatic winding was a fantastic innovation and set the groundwork for really almost every technical advancement since," said Patrizzi.
