  • Christmas gifts - The dream watches of our editorial staff

Brice Lechevalier - Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 5711/1R
Buying an exceptional watch involves preparation and requires a suitable environment that is capable of satisfying the rush of dopamine and endorphins that will ensue from the marriage of virile wrist and the new arrival. What better choice for Christmas than a cult model from an iconic brand that you don't yet have in your collection? The magic starts when you walk through the doors of the Patek Philippe Salon in Geneva at this time of year. The welcome, the smiles, the decoration, showcases generously filled with universally acclaimed timepieces on five storeys of century-old walls all cause the tension to mount a notch. Out of professional familiarity, it's a model from Baselworld 2015 that was featured in a GMT test bench who pheromones worked on me. Out of the box, after the first sensual contact with the wrist, the editor-in-chief is enraptured. The thousand sparkles of the gold bracelet with its polished links with satin-finished edges shine with the promise of daily complicity for the rest of my life, compatible with the fine and timeless silhouette of the self-winding Nautilus with chocolate dial. Champagne!

    Paul O'Neil - Bovet Amadeo® Fleurier Braveheart® Tourbillon
It's nice to be allowed to publish our dreams from time to time, especially since they are probably destined to remain just that. My wife fell in love at first sight with the Jaeger-LeCoultre Gyrotourbillon (oblivious to the fact that it is most definitely a gent's watch) but she is highly unlikely to find one under the Christmas tree. My dream watch follows along similar lines and, even in the unlikely event that one fell down my chimney this year, would probably spend very little time on my wrist. After a presentation from a watchmaker lasting nearly an hour I was totally captivated by the Bovet Braveheart. There are too many reasons to list why I love this watch, but here are six very good ones. It is the perfect concentration of innovation, technical prowess, watchmaking art and practicality. For the Bovet Amadeo® Fleurier Braveheart® Tourbillon, I would happily make an exception to my usual rule of regularly wearing all the watches I own.

Camille Gendre - Piaget Altiplano Chronographe
When we first spoke about this "Watch of our dreams" article in the office, several models sprang to mind. Two selection criteria guided my choice: an elegant but contemporary design and a certain technical sophistication. With this in mind, the watch I would like to find under the Christmas tree is the Piaget Altiplano Chronograph. Its ultra-thin case houses a flyback chronograph movement with a second time zone function. It won the chronograph category at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve 2015 and is a double record holder: for world's thinnest flyback chronograph movement and watch. Added to the technical prowess is a fine and understated design that I particularly like. Father Christmas, if you are reading this, I'm counting on you!

Isabelle Guignet - Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Black Enamel
There is something magical about Christmas and it is that we are allowed to dream and to see our dreams come true. My dream is to have a Jaquet Droz watch on my wrist. The Grande Seconde in black feu enamel, with an 18-carat red-gold dial. The off-centre hour and minute dial forms a figure of eight together with the large seconds subdial, a distinctive signature of the brand. The self-winding mechanical movement has a power reserve of 68 hours. The exceptional design of this watch and the expertise it contains underscore the refinement of horological mechanics.

Michele Brunner - A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Perpetual
What a poisoned chalice from our editor-in-chief! It would have taken me less time to find a gift for somebody else than for myself. Among all the watches launched in 2015 I found it extremely difficult to find the one that I could dream of receiving from Father Christmas. After eliminating all of the watches that were too feminine in my eyes - too much mother-of-pearl, diamonds or pastel colours - I finally opted for the white gold Datograph Perpetual. Why a gent's model? Because it is an A. Lange & Söhne, a watch of the utmost quality, with a design that is indeed sober, but also harmonious and pure, and because its movement is splendid and bewildering. I would love to have it on my wrist… but I am dreaming. I'm sure if Father Christmas had it in his sack, he would keep it for himself!

  • Baselworld 2014 - The success story continues

Baselworld 2014 came to a close yesterday, having once again succeeded in bringing together around 150,000 attendees (including representatives from exhibiting companies, buyers, journalists and other visitors) from every continent.

With enthusiastic feedback from all players, Baselworld 20 14 ended on a high note, having met and exceeded expectations in terms of business, quality, media presence and exposure.

Baselworld is the ultimate meeting place for the entire industry with all sectors represented: watchmaking, jewellery, diamonds, gem stones and pearls, machines, and supply industries. It is the annual event, where around 1,500 exhibitors, including all the leading brands, from over 40 countries first showcase their innovations and novelties. On top of that, the economic impact is enorm ous. The Swiss watch industry, 95% of which is represented at Baselworld, had exports of around 21.8 billion Swiss francs in 2013. And it is not only the watch and jewellery industry that benefits; the whole of Switzerland profits, as Baselworld directly a nd indirectly generates an income of around 2.4 billion Swiss francs a year and thereby approximately 13,000 jobs.

Jacques J. Duchêne, President of the Exhibitors' Committee, confirmed this: "We are extremely satisfied with this year's Baselworld. The exhibitors made a very good turnover and were positive about the media exposure that has aroused interest in the Baselworld 2014 event. Baselworld is and remains the unmissable show for the watch and jewellery industry."

According to François Thiebaud, President of the Swiss Exhibitors' Committee, "2014 has confirmed the excellence and global presti ge of Baselword." He went on to say that the, "Extensive media coverage and articles published this year in the run - up to the show undoubtedly inspired journalists and retailers to come and discover this universe that is one of a kind: the combination of l uxury, innovation and outstanding expertise are the major strengths of the watch and jewellery industry and related sectors."

"Historical! It's been a great Baselworld for Bulgari and it will be remembered for a long time," said Jean - Christophe Babin, CEO of Bulgari . For him, "Baselworld is that moment in time that determines the future. In the course of one week, we unveil our novelties to business partners and to the press of the whole world; possibly one of the most intimate exercises of a brand, the cr eation. In return, we feel the emotions that our creations evoke. A capital experience for the future to continue to improve ourselves."

Thierry Stern, CEO of Patek Philippe, found the whole show to be a "very smooth process, pleasant ambiance and excellent attendance of the press." He went on to say, "We have been present in Basel since 1931, as it is the most important platform for meeting all of our retailers and an excellent platform for our media partners. This year, we received more than 1,000 journalists in a few days."

"Baselworld 2014 has been a good edition, similar to 2013," said Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Co-President of Chopard , adding that, "Baselworld reaffirms its dominant position as "The Rendezvous" of the industry."

Luc Perramond of Hermes agreed that, "(Baselworld) is a unique platform to meet press and customers from the trade with the opportunity to show our novelties to the world."

Stressing the importance of the show, Zenith CEO, Jean - Frederic Dufour said, "Baselworld is an indispensable annual event that allows us to meet our clients, partners and journalists in one unique location."

TAG Heuer CEO, Stephane Linder, was really positive about the business done, saying, "Another excellent year! Sales a re in line with our objectives, which were very ambitious. In terms of volume we have already exceeded our 2013 sales at Baselworld by +50%!" When asked about what the show means for his company he said, "This is the trade show of the year where we see all our retailers and our agents in the space of a few days, the only venue where we feel the pulse of the market in the 'blink of an eye'. In addition, it is also a wonderful platform for communication."

Walter von Känel, President of Longines, says: "We ar e very satisfied with Baselworld this year; it has again been a great success."

According to Sowind CEO Michele Sofisti, "Baselworld has been very b for us both in terms of image and product presentation as well as sales. We had double the appointmen ts of last year and a clear increase in all our numbers for both the Girard - Perregaux and Jeanrichard brands."
The next Baselworld will be held from 19 - 26 March 2015.

    DB25 Imperial Fountain

As a follow up to the sold out Ninth Mayan Underworld, De Bethune debuts the DB25 Imperial Fountain, a new special edition of sets of 12 timepieces. Inspired by the bronze Zodiac Animal Heads which adorned an ornate fountain in the famous Yuanming Yuan (Old Summer Palace) outside of Beijing, China, these beautiful watches feature elaborately engraved animal heads for the 12 Chinese zodiac symbols.

Each of the 12 animals heads, engraved by master artist Michele Rothen using the bas relief technique, is in the middle of the dial of its watch, backed by a Grand Feu enamel relief of the corresponding Zodiac symbol. These engraving masterworks take up the space where a watch's movement normally goes, so Denis Flageollet and the De Bethune watchmaking team were faced with a unique challenge - where to put the mechanism to power the watch?
A completely new movement, Calibre DB 2145, was created to free the center of the dial. The resulting movements uses peripheral hour and minute hands, circling the engraved zodiac head as if by magic. New techniques, such as the use of micro ball bearings and a new transmission system capable of driving the revolving disks, was developed specifically for this movement. This new movement uses the De Bethune trademark Silicon/white gold balance wheel and balance-spring with flat terminal curve, as well as the company's patented triple pare-chute shock-absorbing system. The movement has 287 parts and a power reserve of six days.

The fountain in the Palace of the Calm Seas of the Yuanming Yuan, built in the mid-1700s and created by French and Italian Jesuits and Chinese artisans (for the Qianlong Emperor of China), was actually a huge hydraulic water-clock (clepsydra), with water jetting from the mouths of the appropriate animal head to announce the time.
Due to looting and the ravages of time, the Yuanming Yuan is in ruins now, and only seven of the original 12 Zodiac heads have been found. The Zodiac heads are a powerful symbol for the Chinese, and the subject of much discussion, both inside and outside of China. Recently, famous Chinese artist/provocateur Ai Wei Wei created his Circle of Animals (in bronze and in gold), inspired by the fountain's Animal Heads, to great international acclaim.
The De Bethune DB25 Imperial Fountain Limited Edition sets exhibits the brand's commitment to continuing to use and update the traditional arts of engraving and enameling, as well showcasing De Bethune's knowledge and savoir-faire in the worlds of traditional and contemporary watchmaking. The rare timepiece sets are traditional, contemporary, elegant and possess rate emotion - all hallmarks of De Bethune.
