Gucci - Gucci Dive
Gucci has been in the news a great deal over the last few months. First, the Kering Group accepted the resignations of the leaders of the entire Gucci Group, president and CEO Patrizio di Marco and designer Frida Giannini. Then, Marco Bizzarri was recently named as the new president and CEO of Gucci, and after that, the new creative director was named, Alessandro Michele, who was formerly Gucci's head of accessories, and he presented a triumphant menswear show in Milan.
Following up on this positive vibe, Gucci recently introduced, as a pre-BaselWorld introduction, The Gucci Dive, priced to move at $990 - $1090. If this watch seems familiar, it's because two years ago, Gucci offered a limited edition dive timepiece, powered by a Girard-Perregaux movement (G-P is part of the same group, Kering, as G-P and JeanRichard). The limited edition retailed for $8600+ (depending on material) and sold quite well, so the quartz Dive is a logical follow up.
I recently received a sample of the new Dive to wear and test, and I have to say, I am really impressed. As a dive watch, it ticks all the right boxes. It has a uni-directional turning bezel; a clean, uncluttered dial that is easy to read, with plenty of SuperLuminova on the hands and indices to make it a cinch to read in low light conditions; it's water resistant to 200 meters and comes on a steel bracelet or a sporty rubber strap.
What makes it Gucci?
Unlike many dive watches, even though it offers 200 meter water resistance, the Gucci Dive is slender and elegant enough to wear with your Gucci suit, a casual outfit or just your bathing suit. Gucci touches include the Gucci name on the dial, the rubber strap and the deployant clasp, the iconic Gucci "G" on the crown and the historical Gucci logo (a knight carrying a suitcase and a handbag) engraved on the caseback. Some of the versions have the trademark green-red-green stripe on the dial, red accents or contrasting blue dial.
The Gucci Dive comes in three different sizes (45mm, 40mm and 32mm, in various metal and dial treatments). I have been wearing the large version for the past two weeks and it's proven tough and rugged (I've banged it a bunch of times against doors and walls, with no ill effects - it still runs as well and looks as good as when I took it out of the box) and very comfortable. I have had several people comment on how great it looks, then expressing surprise when I tell them it's Gucci.
I wore the watch while digging out from under the three meters of snow dumped on my Swiss village this past weekend, and it was the perfect sporty timepiece to accompany my efforts. Having good water resistance helped as I sweated with it under my jacket, then exposed it to the cold Swiss winter air to check the time. I gave it a good workout, having to shovel my driveway five times over the weekend, and it rewarded me with excellent performance.
The Gucci Dive firmly establishes the brand in luxury sports, and it should help Gucci transcend the fashion world into the mainstream watch world.
