  • Longines - Longines Masters of Los Angeles

This event inaugurated the newly named Longines Masters, a series combining the very best sports level with the most elegant lifestyle on a unique staging. During the four days of the event, the guests had the chance to experience exceptional and exhilarating show jumping competitions while also enjoying various social events that celebrated the glamorous Los Angeles spirit.

On the sporting side, Longines gave its name to some highlights of the Longines Masters of Los Angeles: the Longines Speed Challenge on Friday, won by Ireland's Bertram Allen on Quiet Easy 4 and the Longines Grand Prix on Sunday, claimed by Germany's Marco Kutscher on Van Gogh. In the former, the competitors' aim is to achieve the fastest time, knowing that 2 penalty seconds are added for each pole that is knocked down, while the latter celebrates the highest level of show jumping.

The brand also took part on Saturday in the Pro-Am "Style & Competition" for Charity, a class aiming at raising money for charitable organizations in a glamorous atmosphere. In this trial, each team consists of two riders, one from among the world's best professional riders and an "amateur". This year, Longines was supporting Jane Richard Phillips and Hannah Selleck, who competed for JustWorld International. This institution, founded by Jessica Newman in 2003, acts as a catalyst for positive change in the developing world by working with local partner organizations to provide basic education, nutrition, health, hygiene, and vocational programs for children in impoverished communities in Honduras, Cambodia, Guatemala, and Colombia.

The Longines DolceVita line was the Official Watch of the event. Inspired by the Italian sweet life, the "Dolce Vita", it is worn on the wrists of women who know how to make the most of life's simple pleasures. As a tribute to those ladies, Longines has decided to offer a new interpretation of this collection, subtly combining geometric lines with soft curves.

  • Longines - Equestrian Pocket Watch Horses Trio 1911

Longines' passion for equestrian sports dates back to more than a century. In 1878, the Swiss watch brand produced a chronograph engraved with a jockey and his mount. The Longines Equestrian Pocket Watch Horses Trio 1911 was inspired by a metal pocket watch kept in the Longines museum and produced in 1911.

This 18-carat rose gold pocket watch has a cleverly crafted background depicting a trio of horses. The heads of these three proud animals stand out against a background of delicately worked foliage. The plant motifs are repeated in the middle of the piece. This unusual model is produced in a very limited edition. Each copy is numbered.

With a diameter of 48.20 mm, this model features the L878.4 calibre with manual winding. This movement is developed exclusively for Longines. Its white dial is decorated with large black painted Arabic numerals and a minute circle. It displays the hours and minutes with elegant "Breguet"-type blued steel hands and there is a small seconds at 6 o'clock. The sides and the bow on this watch are finely crafted in imitation of the original model.

  • Longines - History 1960s - 1970s

1960s: Diamonds-International AcademyDuring the nineteen sixties, no fewer than four Diamond Academy Awards were earned by Longines designs. In addition, Longines won in 1964 the Prix d'Honneur of the Swiss city of Lausanne, part of the events celebrating the Swiss National Exhibition, held every quarter of a century1970s: Golden Rose of Baden-BadenWhen the quartz revolution of the 1970s changed the industry forever, it took some time for designers, and of course their employers, to recover from an "everything is possible" mentality and return to their primary role, creating beauty on the wrist. Longines designers succeeded brilliantly, with Flore Marine (1970), Vagues (1970), Kleopatra (1975) and Volubilis (1978) all winning a prestigious German award, the Golden Rose of Baden-Baden.Design breakthroughs
In 1972, Paris-based French designer Serge Manzon created specially for Longines a series of solid silver watches. Even today, these avant-garde designs remain a source of inspiration for not a few watch manufacturers. One year later, a Longines model called Prototype won the coveted Prize of the City of Geneva award.Technical advances support aesthetic developments
By 1960 Longines set new records with the thinnest electromagnetic watch ever made. Nineteen years later, in 1979, its Feuille d'Or models, fitted with caliber L795, broke the two-millimeter thinness barrier to become the world's slimmest watch, measuring an astonishing 1.98 mm from front to back. The secret: a quartz movement totally integrated into the case.

  • Longines - Debut in the world of badminton

Having renewed its involvement in International tennis in 2007, Longines is now entering the world of badminton this summer. The well known Swiss watch manufacturer whose history is closely linked with that of sports timing has just become a partner of the Indian Badminton Federation. Longines will also be the Official Partner and Official watch for the Badminton World Championships that will take place in Hyderabad (India) from 10 to 16 August 2009.
Having been involved for many years in sports of elegance, precision and tradition such as equestrian sports, gymnastics, Alpine skiing and more recently tennis, short-track and archery. Longines has now committed itself to a sport that demands excellent physical condition, an acute tactical awareness and of course rapid precision. For the famous watchmaker badminton thus reflects the values that it has promoted for over 175 years, namely precision, tradition and elegance.
While the forerunner of badminton was already played by the Chinese as well as the Indians of Latin America over 2000 years ago, the modern-day version of this sport came into being around the same time as Longines' first foray into sports timing over 130 years ago. Legend has it that in 1873, a group of English officers who had returned from India got together in a castle in the village of Badminton (UK); they were talking about an Indian game called "poona" that was played with a racket and a light-weight ball. Having no such ball the officers improvised using a cork stuck with feathers. In their enthusiasm for their invention, they christened the new game ... badminton! Four years later the first set of rules for badminton were published. Since then the rackets and shuttlecocks have become familiar throughout the world and badminton is now an Olympic sport. Physically demanding and at the same time fun, nowadays the sport is played by millions of people worldwide and is the perfect match for the International vocation of the Longines brand.
On the strength of its experience and precision in the field of sports timing, Longines is proud to be able to associate its name and image with this high-level disciplined sport. Longines' next date with badminton is in Hyderabad from 10 to 16 August 2009 for the World Championships.
At this event the Swiss watch manufacturer will be presenting the Longines Master Collection Moon Phases model, a magnificent example of the well oiled professionalism of Longines' design team. Fitted with a self-winding mechanical movement, this elegant chronograph has a silver-plated dial decorated with a fine barleycorn design that enhances the Moon phases display as well as the various counters, the date and the small seconds at 9 o'clock, plus a double display for the day and the month at 12 o'clock. This model from the Longines Master Collection has a transparent case back that enables its proud owner to admire the intricate workings of the movement. The watch is mounted on a brown alligator strap.

  • Longines - Column-Wheel Chronograph

    The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph

On the strength of its long experience in timing, Longines has designed a timepiece that pays tribute to the various timing mechanisms developed during the company's history. Named the Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph, this model houses a brand new calibre whose exclusive development by ETA was mandated and financed by Longines and other brands within the Swatch Group. This self-winding, chronograph movement has a column wheel which drives the mechanism that measures periods of time - a technical device used by the famous St. Imier brand since 1878.
Longines started manufacturing timing equipment in 1878 with the launch of a simple 20 line chronograph; reference number 20H, that had a column wheel (covered by a washer) that governed the chronograph mechanism. Following Longines' progression into the field of timing, almost all the measuring equipment devised by the company used this same principle. Both calibres for pocket chronographs made by Longines, such as the 19CH (1889), the 19.73 (1887), the 19.73N (1909) and the 19.73N with a split-seconds function (1922), the 18.72 (1929) or the 24 line calibre intended specifically for sports timing (1939) and movements for the brand's wrist-chronographs, such as the 13.33Z (1913), the famous 13ZN (1946) or the 30CH (1947) thus all incorporated column-wheel systems for controlling and activating the chronograph functions, which varied according to the specific calibre.
This collection of timing equipment formed the foundation for Longines' history of involvement in timing and the world of sport. The mechanical, column-wheel chronograph thus became a traditional and authentic technical device at Longines. The new Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph model continues this horological heritage into the 21st century.
Having identified the modifications that have affected the world of mechanical timepieces over the past few years (a marked demand for high-quality mechanical watches, the popularity of mechanical chronographs and a fascination for traditional horological devices among the general public), Longines and other brands within the Swatch Group mandated and financed the exclusive development of a self-winding movement with a column wheel for a wrist-chronograph which has now been produced by ETA. This calibre is a contemporary embodiment of a long tradition of mechanical timing which is Longines' heritage.
Fitted with 27 jewels, the L.688.2 movement is a self-winding calibre with a diameter of 30 mm and a height of 7.90 mm. The blued steel column wheel controls the chronograph functions (start, stop, return to zero) and is part of a work of art that is a stylish update of a traditional technique. Beyond its sleek design, the L.688.2 calibre is an inspiring creation designed specifically to meet the demands of timing.
To house this brand-new, exclusive movement the watchmaker has chosen classical and elegant lines that are reminiscent of the timepieces that contributed to its success during the 20th century. The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph has a stainless steel case with a diameter of 40 mm that houses the L.688.2 calibre whose intricate workings can be admired through the transparent case back. The gold-plated Dauphine-style hands are mounted on top of a silvered dial featuring, gold-plated applied hour symbols, a small seconds at 9 o'clock, a 30-minute continuous action counter at 3 o'clock and a 12-hour continuous action counter at 6 o'clock. The timing features of the Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph combined with a classical design make this model a contemporary watch that echoes the great tradition of mechanical timing.
Based in St. Imier in Switzerland since 1832, the watchmaker Longines can look back on more than 175 years of non-stop craftsmanship, as well as a solid heritage as timekeeper for world championships in various sports and collaborator with different international sports federations. Known for the elegance of its timepieces, Longines is a member of the Swatch Group Ltd, the World's leading manufacturer of horological products. With the winged hourglass as its emblem, the brand has outlets in over 130 countries.
