  • A. Lange & Söhne - Napa Valley Riches

An unparalleled wine and watch event, the A. Lange & Söhne Napa Valley Akademie for watchmaking that took place in September gave guests a true insight into the lifestyles of Napa Valley and A. Lange & Söhne watchmaking.

In fact, on site for the event were a host of key A. Lange & Söhne executives who walked the small group of journalists through a training session in the watchmaking arts of craftsmanship and technology -- not to mention wine. The Akademie, which started in 2007, is led by Joanna Lange, who gave insightful and interesting stories about the founding of the brand, the early years of the brand, the fleeing moments of the Lange family to Pforzheim before the Berlin Wall went up, and the rebirth of the brand again after the Wall came down. The event gave an interesting backdrop to the 20 year rebirth of A. Lange & Söhne.

Watchmaking sessions were led by Joanna Lange and the brand's top master engraver, Simone Rauchlub, who demonstrated her very highly skilled art of engraving and then gave journalists the opportunity to try their hand at this painstaking task. Indeed, it gave new appreciation to all - recognizing that engraving is an art that requires precision, accuracy and style. Other sessions included a look at Saxon watchmaking perfection via diamond-polishing miniscule parts and the incredibly challenging task of winding and loading a mainspring into the barrel.

In addition to learning the art of watchmaking, the group was treated by Gaeton Guillosson, North American brand president to amazing wine tours and exemplary cuisine by Gaeton Guillosson, North American brand president. Among the wine tours: Napa Valley Reserve (a members-only winery); Opus One (one of the finest wineries in Napa Valley, originally begun by Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild)); Martin Estate (owned by the Martin family who also boasts an amazing collection of antique fire arms, armor and cars); Continuum (the new venture by Tim Mondavi). Included in the event were dinners at the two 3 Michelin Star restaurants in Napa: The French Laundry (Chef Thomas Keller) - where we enjoyed nine courses on a pairing menu; The Meadowood (Chef Christophe Kostow) - where more than seven courses on a pairing menu were experienced.

The enlightening experience not only gave great hands-on training, but also offered new appreciation of the parallels of fine wine and watchmaking. Winery tour leader, Gilles de Chambure, Master Sommelier, provided wonderful historical details of the wineries and their founders, and of their visions, failures and accomplishments - much like the world of watchmaking. Both trades are an art, each with centuries of tradition and each with innovative, visionary thinking propelling each craft to new heights.

  • A. Lange & Söhne - World Tour 2011

This year's new models from A. Lange & Söhne are going on a trip of about 22,000 kilometres as they are presented from 21 February to 19 April in the four international boutiques of this traditional brand from Saxony, Germany. This gives watch aficionados and friends of the brand the opportunity to examine at first hand the latest highlights of the Lange art of watchmaking.

The 2011 collection is an expression of A. Lange & Söhne's esteem of the exceptional. The new models were received with great enthusiasm in January at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) by both the international press and the trade. Pride of place here was given to the Richard Lange Tourbillon "Pour le Merite", which once again showed that complications are one of the strengths of the Lange manufactory. A further highlight was the Lange Zeitwerk Striking Time which, in addition to a jumping numeral display, also has a quarter-hour chime, thereby striking a new note for the brand. The enhanced and extended Saxonia family demonstrates unmatched craftsmanship. The elegantly designed Saxonia Dual Time turns out to be the perfect travel companion. And at a height of just 5.9 millimetres the Saxonia Thin is the flattest watch ever made by Lange.

The tour started with an exhibition from 12 to 26 February in the first A. Lange & Söhne boutique in Dresden. The models then set out on tour and will be presented to a select audience at exclusive premieres in the three Asian brand boutiques. From 10 to 15 March the collection will be on show in Tokyo's elegant Ginza shopping district. From there it moves on to Shanghai, where the exhibition can be seen from 23 to 29 March. The last stop on the tour will be from 6 to 12 April in Seoul, where the traditional brand opened its most recent shop in December on Lotte Avenue. The expansion of its presence in the emerging markets of Asia is a logical step for the traditional German watch brand whose masterpieces are at home in the very top echelons of the luxury watch market.
As with the shops in Dresden, Shanghai and Tokyo, A. Lange & Söhne Seoul also reflects the personality of the brand and its philosophy - "State-of-the-Art Tradition". Every detail of the facilities and ambience embodies the same spirit of perfect craftsmanship and technical innovation that is expressed by the exclusive watches themselves. For instance, the collection drawers housing the precious timepieces have fronts made from Meissen porcelain. And a replica of the famous Five-Minute Clock from Dresden's Semperoper is on display in all four shops, reflecting the history of Lange watchmaking that stretches back for more than 165 years. The central focus here, though, is on the art of the watchmaker of today. The entire collection of handcrafted timepieces from Saxony can be experienced first-hand at A. Lange & Söhne Seoul.

  • A. Lange & Söhne - 20 years German Reunification

In the autumn of 1989, the pounding of Germany's heart rose to a crescendo - in Leipzig as well as in Dresden and Berlin. The scorching breath of history raced through central Europe. It was palpable. And there was no stopping it, neither with words nor with weapons. During the evening of 9 November, the Berlin Wall, the most absurd structure in recent history, finally collapsed. From then on, the reunification of the two German states was merely a matter of time. It came to pass on 3 October 1990. The historic event reawakened long-lost hopes in the heart of one man: Walter Lange. After the expropriation of his family's watchmaking company in 1948, he had been forced to flee from his hometown Glashutte and took exile in Pforzheim near Stuttgart.

History had reshuffled the cards and opened a critical time window for the great-grand- son of Ferdinand A. Lange, the founder of Germany's precision watchmaking industry. Would it be possible, after an imposed hiatus of more than 40 years, to reinstate the venerable marque that had been established in 1845 and for over one hundred years enjoyed the stature of Germany's most famous watch brand? Could it be resurrected from the archives of collectors and go head to head with the over-whelming competition from Switzerland? Yes. The fascinating idea of transforming the A. Lange & Söhne saga into timepieces again was so compelling that it became reality. The rest is history. It begins with the incorporation of Lange Uhren GmbH on 7 December 1990 by courageous individuals, spurred on especially by Gunter Blumlein, Walter Lange's visionary companion. With a small, dedicated team of ingenious designers and watchmakers, they succeeded in rebuilding the A. Lange & Söhne brand from virtually nothing. It is a story replete with enthusiasm, sacrifice, and success.

On 24 October 1994, after four years of arduous preparatory work, key dealers and specialised journalists witnessed the presentation of the first Lange collection in over four decades during a vibrantly memorable event in the Dresden Palace. Boom or bust? The premiere quartet - the Lange 1, Saxonia, Arkade, and Tourbillon "Pour le Merite" debuts - surpassed all expectations: Germany had found its time again. The announcement of the renaissance of the illustrious name spread through the world like wildfire. Representing a synthesis of classic Lange quality features and imaginative horological innovations, the new watches were unique and so irresistibly convincing that Walter Lange, otherwise known for his modesty, ambitiously declared without hesitation: "We want to build the world's finest watches again."

After a long suite of acclaimed horological accomplishments with milestones like the Datograph, the Tourbograph "Pour le Merite" or the Lange Zeitwerk, A. Lange & Söhne has established itself as one of the most exclusive watch brands in meanwhile more than 50 countries. The small team grew to become a workforce of nearly 450 people. And the portfolio of four inaugural watches has expanded into a full-fledged collection of over 70 models. So far, the exceptional product and design quality embodied in Lange watches has garnered more than 140 international awards. Thus, the reunification of Germany 20 years ago laid the foundation for the reinstatement of "Made in Germany" at the pinnacle of precision watchmaking.

  • A. Lange & Söhne - The Discreet Charm of the New 1815

Two hundred years ago, the German philosopher Immanuel Kant noted that the hand is the window to the mind. In the course of its creation, a watch like the new 1815 by A. Lange & Söhne passes through many "intelligent" and skilful hands.
Each pair of hands adds something to its character. Herein lies its uniqueness and special charm. A customer purchasing a Lange watch forges a bond with the people who designed and created it. Extraordinary people motivated by the age-old desire to complete any task to the best of their abilities, just for its own sake. We would like to introduce six of them:
As a product designer, Martin Schetter is responsible for the face of A. Lange & Söhne. His hands create the things people see first and those that shape their lasting impressions of a Lange watch.
Senior calibre designer Helmut Geyer takes up a pencil to sketch his initial ideas for a completely new, innovative watch. Later, he switches to the computer mouse to turn them into perfect, aesthetically compelling constructions.
Flat polish, circular graining, linear or solarisation finish - finisher Dagmar Hahn creates all polishes by hand, using traditional and sometimes custom-made tools. It is the only way to turn each watch into a unique work of art.
With power and sensitivity, Simone Rauchfuss decorates the balance cock with lavish floral ornaments, creating an engraving that is as individual as a person's handwriting.
Scientists have shown that a person needs about 10,000 hours to become an expert in any given matter. This certainly holds true for master watchmaker Hans-Jurgen Bielchen. He needs to be sure of every single step while assembling the 188 parts of the 1815 into a movement that will please its owner with consistent precision for many decades.
With their signature, the hands of Walter Lange confirmed the return of the label A. Lange & Söhne in 1990. Based on their action, more than 1,000 other hands are working today to create watches like the new 1815 that is now being delivered to retailers and customers all over the world.

  • A. Lange & Söhne - Cabaret Tourbillon is "Watch of the Year"

Baselworld, the biggest international trade fair of the watch and jewellery industry, again this year gave recognition to the sector's greatest timepieces - and the first place went to A. Lange & Söhne. The CABARET TOURBILLON was chosen by readers of the German Sunday newspaper Welt am Sonntag and specialist watch magazine Armbanduhren as "Watch of the Year 2009". This exclusive model from the traditional Saxon watch manufacturer Lange, which was first presented to the public in April 2008, stood up with 753 of 11.978 voices through 154 top current international models and therewith clearly won in the category "Mens' Watches".
With the CABARET TOURBILLON and the first stop-seconds feature ever implemented in a tourbillon calibre, A. Lange & Söhne has written a new chapter in the history of the "whirlwind". It is not only an intelligent complication aesthetically showcased, it is also a useful innovation commensurate with Lange's heritage. The patented invention finally makes it possible to precisely measure the improved rate accuracy of the tourbillon.
