  • A. Lange & Söhne - Walter Lange's 90th birthday

Walter Lange is a man who takes movement to be the purpose of life. In his mid-sixties, instead of retiring like other people, he set up a company. On 7 December 1990, in his home town of Glashutte, which he had to leave in 1948 after his family was expropriated, he founded Lange Uhren GmbH and brought back to life the inheritance left to him by his ancestors. 145 years before, to the day, his great-grandfather Ferdinand A. Lange had set up his watch manufactory and thus laid the foundations of fine watchmaking in Saxony.

The fall of the Berlin wall and German reunification offered Walter Lange a historic opportunity: he could turn his vision - of the world's best watches made once more in Saxony - into reality. He seized it.
An optimist and an idealist, he wanted to bring work to Glashutte and give the people of his hometown new hope for the future. Never stand still!

On 24 October 1994, four years of intensive construction and development work on the part of the team led by Walter Lange and his business partner Gunter Blumlein eventually culminated in the memorable presentation of the first Lange collection of the new era.

This first quartet of watches - four classic timepieces of the greatest technical refinement and the most perfect craftsmanship - exceeded all expectations and resurrected the watchmaking legend.
The news that the illustrious name of A. Lange & Söhne was reborn caused a paradigm shift: the art of fine watchmaking had once more found a second home, outside Switzerland.

As Walter Lange looks back on the occasion of his 90th birthday, he can be proud of his life's work. After a long series of watchmaking successes, A. Lange & Söhne has established itself as a global luxury brand in some sixty countries. From the small initial workforce, an enterprise employing 700 people has grown up and, over 20 years, the four timepieces of the first collection have given rise to five imposing watch families, comprising over 70 references. But what gives him the greatest satisfaction is that more than 1,300 people now have jobs in watchmaking in his old home town. And the growth is still there.

Even if Walter Lange no longer takes an active part in the firm's everyday affairs, he continues to keep track of the development of "his" manufactory as an expert adviser and, as he himself expresses it, a "bridge to history". At trade fairs and important events, he still puts in an appearance as the brand's representative, esteemed by all.
Although he is too modest ever to say such a thing himself, the fact that A. Lange & Söhne exists again tod y is chiefly due to the courage of Walter Lange. His pioneering efforts and the firm that he founded created the conditions to make Glashutte the German capital of watchmaking once again.

For his achievements, he was awarded the Freedom of the City of Glashutte in 1995, and in 1998 the Order of Merit of the Free State of Saxony. Finally, last year, the Swiss Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) honoured "the man without whom the wonderful rebirth of A. Lange & Söhne would not have been possible" with the distinction of "Hommage a la Passion". And he was especially delighted to be awarded this prize for his life's work in Lausanne, remarking with a twinkle in his eye: " In Switzerland, of all places!"

  • A. Lange & Söhne - The New Saxonia Watch Family

With their timeless design and compelling inner virtues, the Saxonia Automatic, Saxonia, Saxonia Thin, and Saxonia Dual Time reflect the traditions of Saxon watchmaking artistry and craftsmanship.
Because of enormous deposits of silver ore, Saxony once experienced an ascent to economic superiority and cultural eminence, spurred on by a spirit of scientific innovation. Commissioned by the Saxon rulers, the most talented artisans and artists created true works of ingenuity that incessantly lure visitors from all over the world to the venues of Dresden's art collections. A historically significant timeline links the city's 16th- and 17th-century court clockmakers with the modern Saxon watchmaking industry originally founded by Ferdinand A. Lange. The four new Saxonia models clearly pay tribute to Saxony's heritage in craftsmanship and precision horology.

Down to the very last detail, the Saxonia Automatic leverages generations of Saxon watchmaking prowess to the present day. In the course of its refinement, it was not only endowed with a larger and Thinner case but also with the Lange manufacture calibre L086.1, the third all-new self-winding movement developed from the ground up by A. Lange & Söhne. A noteworthy feature: a power reserve of 72 hours. It allows the owner, if so inclined, to set the Saxonia Automatic aside on Friday evening, indulge in a weekend of sports, and put it on again on Monday morning without having to rewind and reset it when the new week begins. The argente-hued, solid-silver dial is framed by a gently chamfered bezel that showcases slender baton hour markers, solid-gold lancet hands, and a minute scale reduced to the bare essence. The finesse of the perfectly finished self-winding movement can be admired through the sapphirecrystal caseback of the watch.

The new manually wound Saxonia with the venerable manufacture calibre L941.1 manifests the same sleekness of style. The two most recent siblings are just as eloquently elegant and feature all the quality assets that characterise the noble lineage of their family.
With a diameter of 40 millimetres and a height of merely 5.9 millimeters, the Saxonia Thin is the Thinnest watch ever crafted by Lange. It indicates the time in hours and minutes - noThing else. It stands out as a paradigm of equilibrium and harmony, the hallmarks of a modern classic. Its stunning 2.9-millimetre manually wound movement has a power reserve of 72 hours.

The perfect travel companion is a watch that always offers guidance. The Saxonia Dual Time is such a watch. It is a timepiece for people who are at home around the world. After all, the world is divided into 24 time zones, and passages across zones can be confusing for globetrotters. With a second time zone that can be set with pushbutton convenience, the Saxonia Dual Time keeps its owner in the know.

Adjustments are easily made with two pushers at 8 and 10 o'clock in the left-hand case flank. Pressing the upper button advances the hour hand clockwise. The lower button causes it to move anticlockwise by one hour at a time. The progression of the minute hand is not affected. A second hour hand in blued steel indicates the time at home, so one glance is all it takes to check both local time and home time. Its self-winding movement has a power reserve of 72 hours as well.

  • A. Lange & Söhne - The new 1815 Chronograph

It was a sensation when it premiered in 1999: with the Datograph, A. Lange & Söhne established an excellent reputation in the topmost league of chronograph-making and then systematically consolidated it with horological milestones such as the Double Split and the Datograph Perpetual. Now, the 1815 Chronograph debuts not only as a notable reinterpretation of a horological classic but also as a top-tier addition to the 1815 watch family that was relaunched just last year. It has a power reserve of 60 hours and a proprietary Lange balance spring.
Hardly any other watch manifests the union of tradition and inventiveness as well as of legendary beauty and advanced technology as remarkably as Lange's 1815 Chronograph. The dial reflects the subtle arrangement of indications shared by A. Lange & Söhne's coveted historic pocket watches, of which some 700 were already configured as chronographs. The two symmetrically positioned subsidiary dials for the seconds and 30-minute counter emphasise the balanced geometry and the classic style of the watch. The vintage railway-track scale at the periphery of the dial assures superb legibility of stopped times to one-fifth of a second. The precisely jumping minute counter also simplifies time measurements.
The sleek, elegant looks of the watch contrast with the intricacy of the calibre L951.5 chronograph movement with column-wheel control and a stepped pinion for the precisely jumping minute counter. One of the highlights among the numerous technical features is the flyback function, a device found only in very few chronographs. With one single push piece, the 1815 Chronograph can be stopped and reset in the middle of a time measurement. And a new measurement is started as soon as the push piece is released again.

A large mainspring barrel delivers a sizable power reserve of 60 hours. Rate stability is ensured by the large balance wheel with eccentric poising weights. It is powered by a balance spring developed and manufactured in-house and reciprocates with a frequency of 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour.

The sapphire-crystal caseback reveals one of the technically most exquisite and at the same time most beautiful chronograph mechanisms ever made. It showcases most of the technical and artisanal details, including the stepped pinion for the precisely jumping minute counter, the column wheel that controls the chronograph functions, and the precision beat adjustment system with its whiplash spring on the hand-engraved balance cock. This is state-of-the-art chronography at its absolute best.
