  • Seiko - Ananta '100th Anniversary' Chronograph

    Masamune Date. The ultimate daimyo
Even among the many remarkable daimyo's, or regional barons, of the early 17th century, Masamune Date's is an outstanding story. He fought his first campaign at the age of 14, he succeeded his father as daimyo at 17, he founded Sendai, one of Japan's great cities, and he was the driving force behind a sea-borne diplomatic mission that reached as far as the Philippines, Spain and even the Vatican City in Rome. As a warrior, he was as merciless as he was successful and he was renowned for the distinctiveness of his armour. His Samurai helmet was topped with a large crescent moon emblem and it is with this most distinctive look that history remembers him today. Masamune Date's crescent moon helmet is the inspiration for the new Ananta chronograph.

The refinement of lacquer. The innovation of a new color
The dial of this new chronograph is a perfect expression of Seiko's dedication to ultimate refinement and innovation. Each dial is painted by hand by Isshu Tamura, a noted artist and expert in the Kaga Makie style of lacquer, but it is the colors that make this watch unique. The dial itself is a deep blue, a color never before achieved with lacquer and it evokes the richness of the night sky, against which the crescent moon, also painted in lacquer, shines brightly. The effect is stunning; a combination of power and serenity that is the perfect visual metaphor for the richly varied life of Masamune Date.
    The state-of-the-art 8R chronograph
Inside this new Ananta creation beats Seiko's finest mechanical chronograph caliber 8R28. It, of course, has a column wheel and vertical clutch system for precise operation and also incorporates Seiko's unique three-pointed hammer which ensures the perfect synchronisation of the hands' fly-back. The beauty of the color on the dial is perfectly visible, thanks to Seiko's proprietary antireflective coating which eliminates 99% of light reflection, even in bright sunlight.
This new Ananta chronograph is offered in a limited edition of 300, each with its own serial number engraved on the case back. It is part of the Seiko 100th anniversary collection, which celebrates the centenary of Seiko's very first wrist watch, the Laurel, created in 1913.

  • GPHG - A Salute to Independent Watchmaking

    WORLDTEMPUS - 19 November 2010

The home viewer of the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie's live stream right here at Worldtempus might have thought he or she was seeing a traditional Las Vegas show, so opulent and glittery was the frame surrounding the twelve awards given to the world of watchmaking last night at the Grand Theâtre in Geneva. Showgirls, opera, emcees wearing Chopard jewels worth thousands, Miss Switzerland - only perhaps overshadowed by Gino Ginotti's sparkling Christian Louboutin shoes. Antwerp's Ginotti was one of seven world-renowned retailers flown in from all over the globe to honor the award recipients. These prominent names and faces from Europe, the USA, Singapore, Russia, and the Middle East considerably boosted the global feel of this year's ceremony. For the second year in a row, Chronopassion's Laurent Picciotto played a larger role in the ceremony by commenting the three finalist watches in each category.

A brand-new award was up first: the "little hand" (Petit Aiguille), created to honor the best watch of the year retailing for under 5,000 Swiss francs. Jean-Chrstophe Babin was very pleased to be the recipient of this for the deserving TAG Heuer Caliber 1887 Carrera Chronograph.
The first surprise of the evening took place with the next award. Independent watchmaker and "newcomer" Laurent Ferrier beat out the established competition to take home the award for the best men's watch for his Galet Classic Tourbillon Double Spiral. The independent streak continued with the next award, given to Maximilian Busser of MB&F for the HM4, which won best design watch. Interestingly, one of the nominees in this category - Devon from California - was only the second company in the history of the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie from outside of Europe to be nominated. The other non-European company won the next category for best sports watch: Seiko's Spring Drive Spacewalk Commemorative Edition. "L'Horlogerie c'est multiple," Busser said in accepting his award, with the first three categories proving that beyond the shadow of a doubt.

The next two awards - best women's and high jewelry watches - were both won by established brands, but two that could not have been more deserving: Van Cleef & Arpels's Le Pont des Amoreux was not only the most complicated and interesting ladies' watch to take the stage this year, it was one of the most interesting and complicated timepieces to come out this year at all. Chopard's High Jewelry Owl is representative of the entire unique animal kingdom that Chopard's Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele created this year in honor of the German-Swiss brand's 150th anniversary.
The high complication award went to independent watchmaker François-Paul Journe - a talented watchmaker who can boast receiving a number of Grand Prix awards over the past decade - for his new edition of the Chronometre a Resonance. The public prize, chosen by the readers of Worldtempus and visitors to the Grand Prix pre-exhibitions in Singapore and Switzerland, was awarded to the Vacheron Constantin Historique Ultra-Fine 1955 - a watch that can well be said to have captured the mood of the general watch-buying public with its elegant simplicity in 2010.

The best watchmaker award went to Jean-François Mojon of Chronode, certainly a big nod to his work in creating the Harry Winston Opus X. Directly thereafter, the Grand Prix moved on to one of the biggest surprises of the evening: the special award of the jury, which was only given out this year for the second time. This award can be presented to a watch, a brand, or a person as the jury sees fit. Aurel Bacs, watch director of Christie's and Grand Prix jury member, was pleased to be chosen to represent the remarks of the jury on this occasion as he told Worldtempus later in the evening. "Generally, jury award decisions are not unanimous," he reported. "But this one was very close to being so." The jury honored the A.H.C.I., the Academy of Independent Creators, upon the occasion of its 25th anniversary. The award was emotionally received by co-founder Svend Andersen, a Danish watchmaker living in Geneva, and clockmaker Philippe Wurtz, the loose association's current president.
The main prize of the evening - the Aiguille d'Or ("golden hand") - was presented by last year's recipient, Walter Lange of A. Lange & Söhne. An extremely pleased Stephen Forsey accepted the top honor for Greubel Forsey's Double Tourbillon 30° Edition Historique, a veritable ballet of tourbillon technology.

  • Collection - Personal Holy Grails (Part 1)

Traders in the stock market pay attention to gaps in a stock's price. For example, if a stock closes one day at $10 per share and opens the next day at $12 per share, then there is what is called a gap. Even if the stock continues going up, traders will watch in anticipation of the stock returning to "fill the gap" from its move from $10 to $12. Funny enough, however, the most famous gap of all can be found in the London Underground system, where signs everywhere warn you to "Mind the Gap."

I am a seasoned watch collector, having bought and sold hundreds of watches over the past twelve years. Lately, I find the most fulfilling acquisitions to be the watches that I wanted in the early days of my collecting, but never actually owned: in other words, the "gaps." In speaking with seasoned collectors of anything, this desire to go back and fill in the gaps of one's collecting experience is a common phenomenon. In a way, I suppose, it's a rare opportunity to go back in time and relive the excitement that you felt when your collecting passion was at its zenith.
So, in this series of articles I want to pay homage to the watches that I missed collecting in my early years, some of which I subsequently acquired and some that eluded me.

In all types of collecting, there are entry-level acquisitions that are normally easy to find and affordable. While there are watch collectors who start at the top, dropping a few hundred thousand on a platinum Patek Philippe grand complication and subsequently working their way down is certainly the exception—and a watch dealer's best customer. Accordingly, I started out with a collection that looked like a rainbow with all the different dial colors of Seiko and Citizen automatic diver's watches. (Who can forget the early Seiko Orange Monsters?) I mean, really, what could be more insanely cool to a beginning collector than a 42 mm orange-dialed automatic diver's watch for $129 brand new?
I soon followed that up with a Hamilton Atlantis, which was the spitting image of a Rolex Submariner. I got hooked on Hamiltons for about a year and then moved on to Omega Speedmasters. Rolex comes after Omega for many collectors, and I was no exception, acquiring a vintage Datejust, then a bunch of Submariners, GMTs and Explorers.

After that, I entered the typical "snob" stage, in which one discovers the pedigreed brands like Jaeger LeCoultre, A. Lange & Sohne, and IWC. At this stage of watch collecting, you find yourself ashamed for having recently been so uncultured that you actually loved your Rolex and Omega watches and that you own so many of them. So, you sell all of your former lust objects to fund your "holy grail," which is typically a watch retailing for more than you paid for all of your Rolexes combined and maybe for even more than your car. You tell yourself that you will stop after your Holiness is strapped around your deserving wrist. This special watch is often a Breguet, Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe—or perhaps an F.P. Journe? All excellent choices as your collection's "crowning glory"
At this point, many collectors morph into connoisseurs, and while they may still acquire a watch once in a while, they are basically sated, basking in their horological knowledge and the satisfaction that comes with having done something well and to its fullest. Others keep collecting with gusto for years, or indeed for the rest of their lives.
