  • Grand Seiko 62GS

Seiko celebrates in 2015 the 55-year history of Grand Seiko. Since its creation in 1960, every Grand Seiko watch has shared the same commitment to the pure essential of watchmaking: precision, legibility, comfort and durability.

In 2013, the 1967 44GS was recreated, in 2014 it was the turn of the 1964 "Self Dater," and in 2015, Grand Seiko returns to 1967 and to its first ever automatic watch, the 62GS.

62GS was not only automatic, it was supremely accurate, achieving the level of the highest published standard of the day. The design, too, established a style that has been passed down the years to today's Grand Seiko. 62GS had a mirrored, multi-sided case and a wide dial opening, achieved with a bezel-free construction and Grand Seiko's unique "Zaratsu" polishing. Together, these elements combined to make 62GS a clean, slim, easy-to-read and comfortable watch whose popularity was both immediate and lasting. It was distinctive, too. The crown was recessed and placed at the 4 o'clock position to dramatize the fact that hand winding was not required, and 62GS also had the long and razor-edge hands that have always been part of the Grand Seiko signature.

There are eight references in the new 62GS collection. Four are faithful re-creations of the 1967 original with an automatic caliber and four are modern re-interpretations featuring Grand Seiko's most advanced movements, including Spring Drive. All are limited editions.

We present today the first four faithful re-creations of the of the 1967 original: the ref. SBGR091 (in white gold), 092 (yellow gold), 094 (rose gold), and 095 (steel).

Water-resistant to 100 m, the high definition dual-curved cases are topped with a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, and the case-back is screwn. The house the automatic mouvement Caliber 9S65, with manual winding mechanism, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offering a 72-hour power reserve.

The lion emblem on the case back, the dial layout, the distinctive hour markers and the dial logotypes (notably "Diashock") are all inherited from the original 62GS. The dial color of the steel case model is also faithful to the original dial

An alligator strap completes the watch, whose buckle is of the same material as the case.
600 pieces of the steel version will be produced, and only 100 pieces each of the three gold models.

  • Seiko - Specialty Sports Watches

    Seiko and Sports
Seiko's involvement with sports goes back to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, when the brand was the official timekeeper. It was in that same year that Seiko introduced its first chronograph, a big step for the Japanese brand.

Having had a taste of sporting watches, Seiko began to work on specialized watches. Mr. Ikuo Tokunaga is the man responsible for Seiko's specialist watches and his achievements include the diving, pilot and adventure watches that Seiko has produced.

Under Tokunaga's watch, Seiko received over 100 patents for specialty watches.
"We wanted to develop tools that professionals could use, so we started researching saturation diving and having long discussions with professional divers," Tokunaga remembers. "In 1968, five years after I joined the company, we introduced our first diver's watch, which was a high beat caliber water resistant to 300 meters.

"Then in 1975, we introduced the first professional diver's watch, water resistant to 600 metres, in a titanium case, to save weight," he continues. "For this watch we designed an L-shaped gasket, one that was different from what everyone else was using, and we made it with a special rubber. We incorporated a ceramic outer bezel in 1986 and we developed Lumibrite in the early 1990s for better visibility under water. In 1986, the Pro series became 1000 meter water resistant. Seiko even pioneered the dive computer watch, the Scubamaster, which it introduced in 1990. It had a depth sensor, displayed the diving time, depth and other vital information for divers. In 2014, we introduced the Spring Drive professional diver's watch. It's been a good run."

As early as 1989, Seiko made an aviation watch with a Rotary Slide Rule on it for pilot use. The watch featured a quartz movement and was water resistant to 150 meters. Seiko updated this watch in 2004, increasing the water resistance to 200 meters.

Seiko has a long history of developing watches for explorers, starting with the Landmaster Sagarmatha, developed for Ken Noguchi, who made a successful ascent of Sagarmatha (Everest) in 1998. This watch featured high legibility of the dial, hour and minute hands and a 24-hour hand. The bezel was made of ceramic to be impervious to scratches and had 24-hour markings in relief. The one-piece case and bracelet was made of high-intensity titanium. A commercial version of this watch was launched in the same year.

Then came the Landmaster SouthPole, originally developed for Mitsuru Ohba, a Japanese explorer who did a solo crossing of Antartica on foot. This watch was commercialized in 1999, in a limited edition of 800 pieces, powered by a kinetic movement.

Today, Seiko's professional sports watch line is called Prospex, and it includes land, sea and air. The watches are great looking and well-priced (from 400 - 4000+ chf), all offering professional specifications and are designed to hold up under the most extreme situations.
And it's all thanks to what Mr. Tokunaga started so long ago.

  • Seiko - High Watchmaking - Japanese style

Japan is a land of contrasts. The stunning beauty of the countryside and the urban sprawl of Tokyo and other major cities. The incredibly overcrowded subway stations and the peaceful, serene temples. Traditional Japanese cultural activities, like the tea ceremony, martial arts and mountain hot springs and the Westernized shopping district of Ginza.

One additional contrast is the success of Seiko as a quartz watch manufacturer and their incredible competence in mechanical watchmaking. This isn't something immediately apparent, but after visiting the Seiko facilities in Japan, I came away with a new appreciation of Seiko's ability and an understanding of where the company is going in the future.

    Mechanical History
Seiko has been making mechanical timepieces since the time it was established in 1881. Even when it was developing the quartz technology that rocked the watchmaking world and almost ended Swiss mechanical watchmaking, Seiko continued to feature and concentrate on mechanical movements.

Back when Seiko was first making clocks and watches, everything was mechanical. Seiko quickly earned a reputation for reliable, precise timekeeping. Due to the fact that there is no tradition of small watchmaking ateliers in Japan, Seiko couldn't rely on a network like the Swiss have to supply specialized parts. Therefore, Seiko had to do it all themselves, in-house.

As a result, Seiko is one of the few vertically integrated companies in the worldwide watch industry. Seiko makes virtually every part that goes into its mechanical watches.
"We do everything in-house for our watches," Seiko Watch Corporation's president and CEO Shinji Hattori says. "We make our own hairsprings, our own mainsprings, all the small parts -- we even make the lubricating oil for the watches."

The Seiko facilities are impressive, with all the latest and greatest machines to make the myriad of precision parts needed. The watchmaking workshops are equally as impressive, with row upon row of watchmakers assembling and regulating the watches.

    Grand Seiko
Seiko's luxury watch brand is Grand Seiko, now available internationally. Assembled by hand in the Grand Seiko workshop, the watches are very traditionally styled, and great attention to detail is paid to finishing and to precision.
The Grand Seiko collection of timepieces is a success in Japan, going up against the best Swiss brands. Outside of Japan, it's a bigger challenge, but the Japanese tradition of watchmaking is taking hold.

    Spring Drive
Introduced in 1998 after an astonishing 28 years in development, what makes the Spring Drive movement unique is the complete absence of an escapement. Spring Drive combines a high quality mechanical movement with an electromagnetic regulator, called the Tri-Synchro Regulator, that controls the unwinding of the mainspring, taking the precision of quartz and marrying it to the magic of mechanical watches. As a result of the lack of an escapement, the second hand of a Spring Drive movement sweeps smoothly around the dial.
Seiko has done a variety of Spring Drive watches, including a Sonnerie in the Credor range.

    Credor
Credor is the highest range of Seiko products, and so far it is chiefly available in Japan. This is where the company gets to show off its ability, making chiming watches and other high complications. I visited with one of the watchmakers about his work, and his approach was no different from any of the watchmakers at the highest level in Swiss companies. In fact, his little workshop felt it could have been in Switzerland, with handmade tools for different operations, a Swiss-style watchmaking bench and the peace and quiet necessary for total concentration.
    The Future
Seiko is a phenomenally successful company that doesn't get its due on the international scene. The company has a long tradition of watchmaking and the product they produce has an incredibly high quality standard.
Seiko is doing things the right way, focusing on quality and traditional watchmaking.

  • Seiko - The Grand Seiko Hi-Beat honored at the GPHG

In an industry where many watches are feted with many prizes in many countries each year, one award stands far above all the others. It is the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve. Founded in 2001, it immediately became the watch industry's "Oscars" and its award ceremony is now firmly established, alongside the Baselworld Fair, as one of the key dates in the watchmaking calendar.

On October 31, the 2014 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve award ceremony took place at the Grand Theatre de Geneve. The "Petite Aiguille" category was open to any watch of any type under Sfr 8,000 in price and attracted a large entry. From the short list of six, the jury of 25 watch and luxury experts selected the Grand Seiko Hi-Beat 36000 GMT Limited Edition as the winner.

For over half a century, Grand Seiko has been the very best of Seiko, and to see its beauty, durability, legibility and watchmaking excellence recognised by the most prestigious award in the industry is the greatest possible tribute to the Grand Seiko watchmakers and designers, past and present, who have dedicated their skill and talent to the creation of this remarkable collection.

The watch that won the "Petite Aiguille" award was first revealed at Baselworld 2014. It is the Hi-beat 36000 GMT Limited Edition (SBGJ005). The caliber has a high accuracy of +5 to -3 seconds a day and a power reserve of 55 hours. The GMT hand can be used as a dual time indicator with the hour hand being adjustable independently as the time of day hands continue to mark time.

Commenting on the award, the President of Seiko Watch Corporation, Shinji Hattori said, " I am very grateful to the GPHG and its jury for their decision to award to Grand Seiko this most prestigious accolade. For 50 years, our Grand Seiko team has worked tirelessly to create the best possible functional watch in the world. The Hi-beat 36000 caliber is our proudest achievement so far and this award will spur us on to new achievements in the future."

  • Seiko - The Seiko Astron GPS Solar Chronograph

The new Astron caliber 8X82 shares all the core characteristics of the hugely successful caliber 7X52. Using just the power of light, it connects to the GPS network and tells time with atomic clock precision, adjusting at the touch of a button to every time zone on earth. In addition, the new caliber offers four new features that have been developed in response to ideas suggested by retail partners and customers worldwide. The new caliber does not replace the current one. It is an addition, designed to attract new consumers to the fast-growing world of Astron.

Its case size is 30% smaller, and the watches' dimensions ( 44.6mm × 13.3mm) are now the same as most mainstream multi-function watches. This new size has been achieved by a new advance in Astron's energy-saving technology which allows the watch to connect to the GPS network with a smaller antenna. The simple 'one-touch' operation of the GPS function has not changed; just press one button for six seconds and Astron's GPS function is activated. However, the secondary functions (manual time zone selection etc) have been made more accessible and more intuitive thanks to the new electronic setting function of the crown. The classic Astron black dial is available in the new design, but new color dials are now possible, thanks to a new dial with extremely high light penetration capacity. For 2014, blue and white dial versions are available. The new caliber offers a 6 hour chronograph whose operation could not be
    more simple.

The new caliber is offered in eight new variations, four in steel and four in titanium with super-hard coating. In addition, a flagship Limited Edition Astron is presented at Baselworld 2014. Featuring a titanium case with super-hard coating, white dial and faceted ceramic bezel, it is both recognisably Astron and yet distinctively new. It is offered with both a titanium with super-hard coating and black ceramic bracelet and black crocodile strap, making Astron as versatile as it is unique. Just 7,000 pieces will be made in this Limited Edition, each with its own serial number engraved on the case back.

It is possible to consult the 8 different versions in the photo gallery.
