Patek Philippe - Hands-on with the Ref. 5370P
Patek Philippe has a unique relationship with the chronograph. It may come as a surprise, but what is to many just another complication is fundamental for the Geneva manufacture. Its hand-wound chronographs have long been the brand's pride and are treated with a level of care and sophistication that never ceases to amaze. It is all the truer for its most sophisticated evolution, the split-seconds, also known as rattrapante, which Patek Philippe deems an equal of the minute repeater. Patek is of one the few brands to fully acknowledge the highly technical nature of that complication and to actually keep working on making it better. The 5370P Split-Seconds Chronograph is therefore not just another watch that Patek Philippe launched during the 2015 edition of the Baselworld fair. But its movement, the CHR 29-535 PS, is not the only reason for this special status.
Patek Philippe platinum watches also hold a prominent position within the brand's collections. As a true manufacture hell-bent on creating exquisite cases, Patek Philippe has first-hand knowledge of how difficult it is to shape and polish that metal is. Its rarity, price, hue and prestige set it apart from all other precious metals. In order to reflect that position, all platinum Pateks are signed with a diamond, set at 6 o'clock between the case's lugs and the 5370P is no exception.
And then there is the 5370P's dial. It is one of the very few available today that are entirely made of black Grand Feu enamel. The mere polishing of its surface requires a total of three hours by a skilled dial-maker, not to mention the early stages of its manfacturing which include a prolonged and risky firing process at high temperature. White Grand Feu enamel is much more popular because it reveals all the qualities of that technique. Black enamel reserves its depth, smoothness and unique shine for the expert eye. Never having ceased to offer enamel dials, even in the darkest hours of the watchmaking industry, Patek Philippe knows how to manufacture them, how precious they are and how to treat them : like a flagship.
The 5370P combines three features, any one of which is a Patek Philippe speciality in and of itself. Seldom have they been united within one single watch. The 5370P is therefore a perfect summary of Patek Philippe's art of watchmaking. But it is a bit more than just that. It boasts a new ridged and satin-finished caseband. This type of discreet design change, which the brand's design department regularly implements without really publicising them, is the sign of a permanent quest for perfection. The 5370P looks like the epitome of Patek Philippe, but it is unlike any other one before it, and that is a constant for the Geneva manufacture.
