  • Patek Philippe - Nautilus Ref. 5711/1R

    Exterior:
Do we need reminding that it was that the stunning design of this Nautilus was born in the brilliant mind of Gerald Genta? The star designer of the 1970s dreamed up the lines of this reference with the same undeniable mastery which led him to create a number of models that are still on the catalog of several prestige brands and indeed remain firmly in the design vanguard 40 years on. The development department therefore has only to adapt the dimensions of the case to the evolution of the movements and functions that have been introduced since.
The aptly named Nautilus was inspired by Captain Nemo's legendary submarine and the design of its bezel evokes a hatch capable of resisting tremendous pressure (12 bar like the original model). While purists will regret the appearance of a screw-in caseback fitted with a sapphire crystal, the Nautilus continues to flaunt perfect proportions, a modest thickness given its water resistance, as well as a comfortable fit on the wrist.
The dial also bears the original 1976 design and boasts exemplary finishes including gold hour-markers and a "chocolate" color that is one of the rare new features of this model.

    Movement:
The self-winding 324 SC caliber with central seconds and disk- type date display is not the one powering the original model, but has nonetheless been part of the brand catalog for several years. The going train and automatic winding system, traditionally built and extensively tried and tested by Patek Philippe, springs no surprises other than renewed admiration for its exemplary finishes. Nonetheless, although entirely in keeping with the rules of the art, there is nothing ostentatious about the Côtes de Geneve, circular graining and beveling of the steel parts and bridges. The famous "Geneva" quality is omnipresent in an understated expression that would doubtless have met with Calvin's approval, yet which nonetheless betrays clear signs of industrialization.
Certain technological innovations developed in recent years by the Patek Philippe research laboratory are present in this movement, although they remain invisible to an untrained eye and are mostly concentrated on the escapement and the regulating organ: a four-arm Gyromax® balance-wheel and its inertia blocks serving to achieve dynamic fine adjustments, as well as the Spiromax® balance-spring in Silinvar® powering the sprung balance oscillating at 28,800 vph. While we do not yet have the benefit of much hindsight regarding the aging of components stemming from these technologies, the improvement in chronometry (timing precision) is clearly evident. Caliber 324 SC bears the Patek Philippe Seal characterized by some of the narrowest possible timing-adjustment tolerances.

    Tests:
A string of figures could not possibly sum up the chronometric performance of this movement so vividly as the sense of precision it almost "metaphysically" exudes. As far as rates are concerned, the Patek Philippe demands a rate accuracy of between -3 and +5 seconds per day! While the amplitudes are not excessive and there is thus not much risk of knocking, they remained in any case superior to 255° in all the states measured. The high inertia of the balance-wheel doubtless plays a significant role in these results. As far as the power reserve is concerned, our measurements showed 38 hours, right in the middle of the range announced on the technical specifications. The performance of the automatic winding system is remarkable and the 21K gold oscillating weight ideally enhances the efficiency of the reduction gear train.

    Conclusion:
This Nautilus fulfills the criteria one would expect from a model belonging to the sphere of Haute Horlogerie and appearing in the catalog of the brand. Given the magnificent developments introduced by Patek Philippe in recent years, one can well imagine that it will apply some of them to this iconic model, now that the monumental efforts devoted to its 175th anniversary are behind it. Surely a legitimate hope placed in a brand that has been defining the standards of excellence for many decades?

  • Architecture - The future in the spotlight

Text by Marie de Pimodan-Bugnon & Alex Leuzinger

Watchmaking and architecture share common terminology as well as identical construction principles. Parallel to this, form and function interweave to underpin design. Philosophical resemblances and structural similarities under the scrutiny of architect Alex Leuzinger.

The watch : Nautilus Travel Time Chronograph by Patek Philippe ref. 5990/1 A

A cult design, two of the most sought-after complications, exemplary readability… The Nautilus Travel Time Chronograph adds the famous mechanism that makes it possible to read the second time zone at a glance to a classic chronograph movement. Two useful functions that Patek Philippe blends with the iconic aesthetics of the Nautilus whose porthole-inspired shape as well as its two lateral hinges on the case prove to be particularly suited to using these complications. While the righthand hinge acts as a protective reinforcement for the crown and chronographer pushbuttons, its left-hand counterpart has been replaced by the pushbuttons making it possible for the local time hand to go forward or backwards in hourly jumps. Smooth handling that is positively child's play, coupled with a day/night indicator for each time zone and a perpetual calendar pegged on the local time. The dial reflects the collection's emblematic design with its horizontal Nautilus textured pattern in subtle shades of black. Excellent aesthetics working in conjunction with useful functions driven by the new CH 28-520 C FUS mechanical self-winding caliber.

Its architectural equivalent : Brazil's Niteroi Contemporary Art Museum (MAC) by Oscar Niemeyer

Designed by Oscar Niemeyer, one of the most famous Brazilian architects, the MAC opened in Niteroi, opposite Rio de Janeiro in 1996, after five years of construction. Intended to house the João Leão Sattamini Neto art collection, the museum is a work of art in itself that the public discovers when it comes to look at the some 1200 works exhibited. Rising to the heavens "like a flower" in Niemeyer's own words, the 16-meter high, 18 to 20-meter diameter circular building, offers a staggering view of Sugar Loaf Mountain and the Corcovado. The building's silhouette has a unique influence on the view over Rio de Janeiro and gives visitors a sense of being confronted by a futuristic headlight rising out of the earth.

Its contours reveal the mature, daring work of an experienced artist… The influence of Corbusier (1887-1965) can be seen through the rational use of materials and the formal, adornment- free language which promotes the architectural concept of the building. The way in which Oscar Niemeyer positions simple, linear shapes enables him to use a hard, raw material such as concrete which he makes lighter and which he engineers into a playful dance between the water of the swimming pool in which it is mirrored and the surrounding sea. This harmonious, poetic simplicity makes this building a futuristic element, as well as a classic that is able to convey unique emotions.

The Nautilus Travel Time Chronograph fits into this mind set. The choice of steel - a "hard" material like that of the concrete used for the MAC - is thus transformed through a bold idea into a poetic object capable of transporting us into a new universe as well as becoming an icon of modern design. Inspired by the shape of a porthole, with the changing shades of its dial and its harmonious curves, the watch is reminiscent of the ocean and the reflecting pool in which the curved silhouette of the building created by Niemeyer is mirrored and outlined.

  • Patek Philippe - Calatrava Ref. 4897, in rose gold

Patek Philippe's presents a new interpretation of its ultra-thin ladies' Calatrava Ref. 4897 in a warm 18K rose gold case, a dial with a bittersweet chocolate hue, and a bezel adorned with 72 Top Wesselton round diamonds. It is a mechanical opus that redefines seductiveness.

The growing interest of women in artisanal horology is evidenced by the success of the ultra-thin mechanical Calatrava for ladies that Patek Philippe launched three years ago. To accommodate demand, this watch is now being launched as Ref. 4897R in 18K rose gold.

    A dial in style

The case shape of the Ref. 4897R reflects the sleek lines of the Bauhaus philosophy: form follows function is the leitmotif of all Calatrava models. Its personality mirrors classic elegance not only with its focus on the display of hours and minutes but also with the 72 Top Wesselton round diamonds on its bezel. Here, eternity subtly contrasts with the constant course of time. This antithesis takes place on a dramatic stage that glows in the dark brown hue of bittersweet chocolate. On the dial, the concentrically guilloched wave pattern interacts with a rich brown to create a fascinating impression of depth. The applied arrow-shaped hour markers and the faceted hands in rose gold appear to be suspended in mid-air.

    The 4-hertz heartbeat

The Calatrava Ref. 4897R is powered by Patek Philippe's manually wound caliber 215 mechanical movement. Although it is ultra-thin and highly compact (height 2.55 mm, diameter 21.90 mm), it fulfills the rate accuracy requirements imposed on all of Patek Philippe's mechanical movements.
The Calatrava Ref. 4897R for ladies in 18K rose gold replaces its predecessor, the Ref. 4896 G with the white-gold case and deep blue dial. The sheer beauty of the new model, its discreet radiance, the 6.35- mm thick case, and its rich inner life endow this ultra-thin Patek Philippe Calatrava with all the facets it needs to become a celebrated paragon of feminine elegance.
