  • Laurent Ferrier - Interview

Laurent Ferrier is a watchmaker's watchmaker, having worked at Patek Philippe for more than 30 years, rising to the rank of technical director, and then starting his own brand five years ago. I caught up with Ferrier to find out what makes him tick.

You have had quite a career. What is your secret of success?
The opportunity to have worked for 40 years with the best craftsmen, designers and watchmakers gave me a taste for excellence and performance. During all those years I had the chance to fulfil my dreams and meet people passionate about fine watchmaking with whom I continue to share fantastic moments along this common passion.

What do you love about watches?
Watches are for me a form of elegance, harmony in an object which is a paramount of craftsmanship and refinement. It combines visual arts and technical expertise and knowledge.

How did you come to the decision to start your own brand?
Both my father and grandfather worked in the watchmaking industry; I always wanted to perpetuate this legacy. For me, producing my own timepiece was really a once in a lifetime chance to fulfil a real watchmaking dream.
Our initial intention was to design the piece that a watchmaker would love to wear. This is how the Galet Classic was born. Following the GPHG award in the men's watch category, the brand awareness really took off.
Laurent Ferrier is now five years old and we have learned a lot during this fantastic experience. The GPHG award was just overwhelming and is perceived as a real encouragement to keep striving for the same level of commitment and passion for excellence.

What was the biggest challenge to getting your brand off the ground?
The success of the Galet Classic Tourbillon Double Spiral helped us build brand awareness. The challenge we faced was to enhance our collection and offer new models that stick to the highest standards of Haute Horlogerie excellence while offering appealing products to our customers.

What is your favourite, non-Laurent Ferrier watch?
The Patek Philippe 5159 Officer's watch, a legendary timepiece.

Do you remember your first watch? What was it and what is the story behind it?
My very first watch was an Orator timepiece that I received at the age of 10 as a gift from my father who was the brand agent.

What gets you up in the morning? What do you enjoy about what you do?
I had the chance to be given the extraordinary opportunity to create my own timepiece from scratch with total freedom.
When I realized we had a customer base to support us, I kept doing what I really enjoy in life: design timepieces. And I have so many projects in mind ... a few of them may surprise you.

  • Patek Philippe - Wowing Them All

    WORLDTEMPUS - 26 March 2011

Visiting the Patek Philippe booth, one hardly knew where to look first: a new interpretation of the chronograph perpetual calendar (Ref. 5270) was quickly followed by a brand new minute repeater with monopusher chronograph and perpetual calendar (Ref. 5208). The latter actually represents the second most complicated timepiece in Patek Philippe's current production after the Sky Moon Tourbillon model. Boasting more than 700 individual components and costing 825,000 Swiss francs, this triple complication in a Calatrava case also contains some silicon components such as the Spiromax balance spring and the Pulsomax escapement.

Reference 5216 is a new minute repeater with tourbillon, perpetual calendar, retrograde date and moon phase, while Reference 5073 with minute repeater and perpetual calendar is set with 158 baguette-cut diamonds (5.27 ct).
    Ladies First - again
In an extremely surprising - yet incredibly satisfying - move, the traditional brand also introduces two major complications for women, the first such pieces ever produced. The Ladies First Minute Repeater (Ref. 7000) is an ultra-thin (5.05 mm high) repeating wristwatch in a rose gold officer's style case with hinged case back. The Ladies First Split-Seconds Chronograph (Ref. 7059) is the world's thinnest rattrapante: only 5.25 mm in height and boasting two column wheels, it also comes in a round officer's style rose gold case. Needless to say, these two beauties are styled to appeal to feminine aficionados while retaining absolutely traditional elements.

    More ladies
Other purpose-built ladies watches include a 36 mm automatic world timer with micro rotor and 62 diamonds on the bezel (Ref. 7130); an ultra-thin, fully skeletonized manually wound movement in a 31.4 mm gold case on a gold bracelet (Ref. 7180); the first ladies Nautilus with automatic movement (Ref. 7008), and Reference 7041, a Gondolo in the same 30 x 33.8 mm rose gold case that the original Ladies First chronograph came in in November 2009. This feminine timepiece with 108 diamonds around the outside of the dial houses manually wound Caliber 215 PS.

Reference 5153 is a no-nonsense automatic (Caliber 324 S C) with date, sweep seconds, and a wonderful hand-guilloche dial that comes in a 38 mm white gold case that could well be considered unisex. It also boasts the hinged case back of an officer's style case.
Following 1999's introduction of the Twenty-4 model, this year marks a bold milestone for Patek Philippe in terms of drawing female connoisseurs. "We've gone from 0 to 100 in 3-4 years in terms of complications for ladies," Larry Petinelli, president of Patek Philippe USA, remarked this week.

  • Patek Philippe - Antiquorum sale of Caliber 89

    16 November 2009

Antiquorum completed an epoch-making sale yesterday at its fall Geneva auction. Originating in Japanese Patek Philippe and Ferrari collector Yoshiho Matsuda's collection, Antiquroum sold the yellow gold timepiece weighing 1.1 kilograms for 4.5 million Swiss francs. Together with the buyer's fee, this made for 5,120,000 million Swiss francs changing hands.

One of the rarest pocket watches in the world—only one was made in each of four precious metals—it also holds the record for being the most complicated timepiece in existence: the triple spring barrel movement with a non-visible tourbillon boasts 33 complications and displays the hours, minutes, and seconds of both mean time (front) and sidereal time (back). The other complications include: second time zone, times of sunrise and sunset, the equation of time, world time for 125 cities, secular perpetual calendar (day, weekday, month, four-digit year, leap year, "sun hand" for display of the season, equinox, solstice, and zodiac, star chart, age and phase of the moon, date of Easter, Sirius's passage, the moon's passage, lunar orbit, and a 24-hour display with day/night indicator), split-seconds chronograph with 30-minute and 12-hour counters, grande et petite sonnerie with carillon, a minute repeater, alarm, power reserve indicators for both movement and strike train, crown position indicator, thermometer, hair hygrometer, barometer, altimeter, and compass. The movement containing 1,278 components boasts four levels on three German silver plates and 126 jewels. It measures 71.5 x 28.05 mm and weighs 600 grams.
Taking a full nine years to complete, Caliber 89's movement conforms to the strict specifications of the Seal of Geneva. The yellow gold example sold yesterday was originally part of Antiquorum's themed sale "The Art of Patek Philippe" on April 9, 1989. All four of the watches were sold at this time to one royal family, with the collection dispersing in the early years of the new millennium.
The Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva does not own an example of Caliber 89: the watch measuring 88.2 x 41.07 mm on display there does not contain a movement. Antiquorum celebrates its 35th anniversary this year.
