Love the Panerai Luminor Base Black Dial Mechanical Men's PAM00219 watch, but the battery died the first month I had it. They've obviously been sitting in the warehouse for awhile. Aside from that, the watch is lovely and a great bargain.

Published in Italy on the 2nd of July, the new Panerai book tells the story of the past and present of the Florentine brand Panerai. Published by the Italian publishing house Marsilio and created with the editorial coordination of the Cologni Foundation for the Metiers d'Art, the book respects the identity of the brand with its elegant, simple yet sophisticated graphic design, its attention to detail, and the richness and originality of its content.

It consists of five essays covering five different aspects of the identity of Panerai, each one written by a different author. The essays take the reader on a journey through the fascinating worlds which define the distinctive identity of the Florentine brand: the history, the technology, the sea and the design.

Available in four languages - Italian, English, Chinese and Japanese - the book is distributed throughout the world by Rizzoli International.

The appearance of the Radiomir 1940 is classic, with the large cushion case - 45mm in diameter - of pure minimalist lines, its lugs formed out of the block of the case, a polished bezel and a cylindrical winding crown.
The case is made of two different types of titanium: grade 2 titanium for the caseband - a light alloy, resistant to corrosion and allowing complex machinings; and grade 5 titanium for the bezel and crown - an alloy which differs from the previous one in that it can be polished. The case is water-resistant to 10 bars (100m).

The brown dial is made with the characteristic sandwich construction created by Panerai in the 1930s to ensure the maximum visibility and legibility. The special Super-LumiNova® ecru gives the dial a vintage aspect. Also evoking the past of the brand are the characteristic small seconds dial at 9 o'clock, a unique moving element of the minimalist dial.

The P.4000 calibre can be admired through the sapphire caseback. This is the first manufacture automatic movement with a decentralised oscillating weight, completely designed and made in Panerai's manufacture in Neuchâtel. The decentralised rotor, much smaller in diameter than the calibre itself, enables the thickness of the movement to be substantially reduced (3.95 mm). The oscillating weight, made of tungsten, is very small and fitted within the movement instead of superimposed upon it. It winds in both directions, enabling it to accumulate a power reserve of three days, thanks to the use of two spring barrels connected in series. The P.4000 calibre also has the device which stops the balance when the winding crown is pulled out, so that the watch can be perfectly synchronised.

The Radiomir 1940 3 Days Automatic Titanio (PAM00619) is supplied with a brown buffalo leather strap, with contrasting stitching.

This 44mm model features a case and bezel in polished steel. The crown and the device protecting the crown are in brushed Type AISI 316L steel. The black dial features luminous Arabic numerals and hour markers, and the inscription 8 Giorni Brevettato ("8 Days Patented") at 3 o'clock. Functions include hours and minutes, as well as small seconds at 9 o'clock. Inside, the in-house Calibre P.5000 has a 8-day power reserve (192 hours) inspired by Angelus-made 8-day watches of the past. This calibre features a KIF® Parechoc anti-shock device and two barrels.

True to Panerai's navy heritage, the Luminor Marina 8 Days is water resistant to 300 meters. The water-resistance is ensured by the case's Type AISI 316L stainless steel, as this steel alloy is particularly resistant to corrosion. Panerai's iconic bridge device also features a lever that exerts pressure on the winding crown to improve water-resistance and to protect it from accidental shocks.

The vintage inspiration is also expressed in the form of a historical inscription on the solid case back. An engraving represents the Italian Navy human torpedeos used by the Navy to carry out their underwater missions.

The Luminor Marina 8 Days (PAM00590) is fitted with a brown untreated leather strap and is supplied with a spare strap and a steel screwdriver.

Dedicated to fans of technical grand complications, the Luminor 1950 Equation of Time Tourbillon Titanio - 50 mm by Officine Panerai is a tribute to the genius of Galileo Galilei, a combination of some of the rarest, most exclusive and fascinating specialities in watch-making.
Produced in just 30 examples, the Luminor 1950 Equation of Time Tourbillon Titanio - 50 mm is the most technically sophisticated wristwatch ever produced by Officine Panerai: a tourbillon with equation of time, indication of sunrise and sunset times for the city chosen by the purchaser and depiction of the night sky of the same city on the back plate.

The watch functions are immediate and clear on the dial: a date window at 3 o'clock, alongside a tiny dial that shows the month with a hand; sunset time; equation of time; sunrise time and finally small seconds at 9 o'clock, where the rotation of the tourbillon with a tiny ecru disc is visible through a small dial. Times for sunrise and sunset are shown by two cursors that run along numbered circular sectors and vary depending not only on the seasons but also on the latitude chosen by the purchaser. The dial has the classic Panerai sandwich structure, guaranteeing exceptional night-time visibility thanks to the luminescent substance inserted between the two layers.
Equation of time is the difference between the time shown by the watch, which is that universally adopted for ease and real or solar time, which varies every day due to the eccentricity of the Earth's orbit and the inclination of its axis. 4 days a year, these two times coincide perfectly but on all the other days they actually differ by up to 15 minutes, either faster or slower. The linear cursor at 6 o'clock immediately shows this time difference and this calculation is a speciality of top-end watchmaking and a feature that very few watches have.
Other indications can be seen through the sapphire glass on the lower part of the movement P.2005/G, based on the Officine Panerai P.2005 in-house calibre, modified to include new functions. With 375 components, the P.2005/G calibre features a typical Panerai tourbillon regulator, which can be admired from the back, turning on an axis perpendicular to the axis of the balance and making two rotations a minute, instead of one. With three spring barrels, it has a manual-wound movement and ensures 4 days' autonomy, with the remaining power reserve shown by a hand, this too visible on the back.

The last hugely fascinating element that completes the personality and refinement of this model, is the map of the sky on the lower part of the mechanism. The disc that shows the map rotates in one direction or the other, depending on the hemisphere chosen, thus constantly updating the night sky above the city chosen by the purchaser. The name of the city is also engraved on the back, together with the millesimation.
The watch's Luminor 1950 case is 50 mm in diameter, in titanium so that it weighs less, but clients can also choose a pink gold case. Waterproof to 10 bar (about 100 metres), the case has the typical crown-protecting bridge, brushed titanium like the case body, while the anti-reflective sapphire crystal is held in place by a bezel with contrasting polished finish.
The Luminor 1950 Equation of Time Tourbillon Titanio - 50 mm comes with an alligator strap and the classic buckle customised with the Officine Panerai logo.
