  • Column wheel chronographs - Part 3

Louis Vuitton Tambour Twin Chrono At Baselworld this year, Louis Vuitton surprised the watch world with a unique chronograph: its never-before-seen function needed two column wheels to make it work, including one that boasts a different geometry than the classic column wheel. This patented world premier is not complicated for the sake of being complicated; it needs these integral chronograph components (and a host of others, 437 parts total in the movement) to accomplish its unique function. It is the first mechanical chronograph - to be precise, the running movement showing the time display is automatic, while the chronograph is powered by a manually wound mechanism - to measure two separate times and show the difference between them on the dial.
The column wheels are needed to integrate and "translate" the commands related to these timing functions. The first column wheel, which comprises traditional horological geometry, controls the minute hand. The second has a fully unique shape, and its three levels perform two functions: start/stop of both "timers" and resetting the chronograph seconds. In principle, the Twin Chrono re-conceives the split-seconds chronograph and makes it doubly functional. Particularly for timing Match Racing regattas, which was its inspiration. At this level of complication and finely finished elements including a grand feu enamel dial it's no wonder that the Twin Chrono is limited to just 30 pieces.

Montblanc TimeWriter II Chronographe Bi-Frequence 1000

Louis Vuitton's CEO Hamdi Chatti was the former watch director of Montblanc, where he was instrumental in turning the purchase of Minerva into a highly interesting arm of Montblanc now called Villeret (after the town in which it is located). He was responsible for the unique, luxuriously and traditionally handcrafted timepieces, many based on existing Minerva calibers, that began churning out of the village factory in homeopathic - but gloriously traditional - doses. Indeed, it has taken a while for the collector community to acknowledge it, but the time has definitely arrived when one can do nothing other than admire the talent and determination in creating these beautiful products. The Nicolas Rieussec line is proof positive: beautiful finish combined with an unusually aesthetic design make this manually wound monopusher chronograph one to remember.
The back of Caliber MB R100 and its derivatives are gorgeous with a plate covering half the movement, but cut out to reveal not only a power reserve indication, but also the traditional column wheel. Naturally, original Minerva base movements are still in use at Villeret too, meticulously finished with a vintage feel to them - and the obligatory swan-neck fine adjustment and column wheel that were typical of Minerva's designs. However, it is Montblanc's TimeWriter II Chronographe Bi-Frequence 1000 that deserves even more of our attention. This manually wound monopusher chronograph does more than take interval times; it takes the smallest possible time measurements - to the nearest 1/1,000th of a second. This is possible thanks to the fact that the manually wound chronograph has its own balance beating at 50 Hz. Though it seems highly unlikely, it is also possible to actually see this measurement as well thanks to the "dashboard" positioned at 12 o'clock.
This particularly creative column-wheel chronograph is available only in a limited edition of 36 pieces. As an aside, this number was chosen as an homage to the year 1936, which is when Minerva was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for a stopwatch able to take times to 1/100th of a second.

  • Montblanc - The new Star Classique Automatic

Never before in the more than 100 years of their history have wristwatches undergone such dynamic evolution. New technologies, novel materials and innovative functions have given rise to creations and formats that shatter all previous conceptions. To assure that simple, classical elegance isn't forgotten amidst this fascinating burst of innovation, Montblanc has added to its Star collection the Star Classique in a new dimension: classical esthetic in a slim case design.
Classically circular, medium in size and without additional complications, this gold wristwatch is as indispensable to a gentleman's outfit as are cufflinks, a fine necktie with a tastefully understated pattern, an elegant breast-pocket handkerchief and impeccably polished shoes. But classic gold wristwatches have been relegated to the background in recent years and have surrendered their traditional place in the front row of jeweler's display cases. Style-savvy cavaliers who also want their wristwatches to uphold the standards of discreet elegance will surely be delighted to welcome the Montblanc Star Classique Automatic, which will be available in 2012.

    Less Is More
The credo of the new Montblanc Star Classique Automatic is emphatically "less is more." Hours, minutes and small seconds are all a man needs to arrive punctually at every business meeting or private rendezvous. He already knows the date, and his smartphone can dispatch all the other functions, e.g. stopwatch, calendar or second time zone. It's far more important for him to wear a wristwatch that's attractive yet unostentatious, slim enough not to scrape or snag, legible at a glance - and that radiates an aura of tactful noblesse.

    Discreet Elegance
These expectations are superbly fulfilled by the new Star Classique Automatic in its classically round, very slim and elegant gold case. The diameter is a contemporary 39 millimeters; a narrow bezel contributes to the visual appeal; and a moderate height of 8.9 millimeters seems even slimmer thanks to the bold inward rounding on the middle part of the case. The narrow, vertically protruding horns curve slightly downward to give this watch an anatomically correct contour that fits perfectly around its wearer's wrist. The harmonious impression is consummated by a slightly cambered sapphire crystal which has undergone antireflective treatment on both its surfaces so that it guarantees the utmost transparency without glare. This crystal provides the ideal window through which to admire the silver-colored dial, which looks highly appealing and interesting, although its styling is uncompromisingly minimalist. The eight indices and four numerals are plated with gold, as are the leaf-shaped hour-hand and minute-hand, as well as the little second-hand, which turns its circles on a subdial at "6 o'clock." The dial's bare-bones design accentuates the black MONTBLANC insignia and the finely printed words "AUTOMATIC" and "SWISS MADE."

    Mechanical Purism
A pane of sapphire crystal in the back of the case invites connoisseurs to admire the selfwinding mechanical caliber MB 4810/408 with its ball-borne winding rotor and gleaming golden balance. The latter completes 28,800 hourly semi-oscillations (4 Hz) and thus ranks among the fast-paced oscillators. The view through rear window underscores the fact that a fine mechanical timepiece has charm and elegance that no quartz watch could ever rival. This caliber is the ideal power source for a wristwatch that has been reduced to the barest essentials for owners who appreciate classical elegance and inner values.
But the real importance of the Montblanc Star Classique Automatic wristwatch is that it obviously goes with the understatement of the brand and therefore has all chances for a classical hero among the Montblanc watch assortment. Connoisseurs who keep a close eye on the market will quickly realize that interest has concentrated on extremes: extremely complicated mechanical masterpieces and extremely sleek models that distil the basic functions into the most elegant possible form. This mood of understated elegance is tastefully complemented by a sleekly black alligator-leather strap secured by a simple pronged buckle made of 18 K gold.
The Star Classique is available in 18 K red gold and yellow gold, as well as in a gold-and-steel variant with bezel and crown made of 18 K red gold. Two steel variants with classical black alligator-leather wristbands round out the collection.
The Star Classique watches will be available in Montblanc boutiques and selected jewelers as of June 2012.

  • Montblanc - Writing Time

Having made its name in writing instruments - without which there would be no civilization - Montblanc has also set out to leave its mark on that other milestone of human accomplishment, the measurement of time, without which there would be no progress. The manufacture Montblanc Montre S.A. in Le Locle, a town in the Swiss mountains where the finest watchmakers originated and still live, was established as the watchmaking arm of the almost 100-year-old luxury brand. Since its foundation in 1997, it has carved out a firm place for itself amongst the great watchmakers of our time. The company's first watches, in black and gold and bearing its trademark white star, inevitably evoked the nobility of the writing instrument Meisterstuck. Legendary models have made their appearance since, among them the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph that pays homage to Nicolas Mathieu Rieussec, the inventor of the "instrument of writing time" - known to the world as the chronograph.

In 2007, Montblanc was entrusted a unique treasure in the world of haute horlogerie: the manufacture Minerva in Villeret, where extremely fine timepieces are manufactured since 1858. In the unchanged spirit of a hundred year old company, Montblanc set out to safeguard this extraordinary heritage. The innovation of today is the tradition of the future. While the traditional technical and artistic skills are still practiced today in Villeret, Montblanc encourages innovations that further develop - but at the same time respect - the proud principles of traditional haute horlogerie. This philosophy is beautifully embodied in the timepieces of the Montblanc Collection Villeret 1858.The book is introduced under the patronage of Mr. Franco Cologni, founder and president of the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie, who has also written the preface to the oeuvre. Writing Time tells the story of Montblanc watches through the perspective of three experts in the field of watchmaking on 288 pages. Gisbert Brunner is an eminent watch specialist. As an internationally reknown expert, he is a contributor to many leading specialized watch magazines and member of the Jury of the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve. He is also the author of various books on horology.Laurence Marti is a historian and doctor of sociology, and author of a book on Longines and its region.Reinhard Meis is a watchmaker and movement constructor. As Head of Development at Lange & Söhne he bly influenced the product design and characteristics of the "New Lange" watches. He is also the author of various specialized books on horology.
