  • IWC - Ingenieur Automatic Edition «Laureus Sport for Good Foundation»

As part of the company's long- term commitment to the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, the sports timepiece maintains one of the Swiss watchmaker's grand traditions: part of the proceeds from sales goes to aiding the work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, whose sports-related social projects are designed to have a positive influence on the lives of disadvantaged children around the world. The engraving on the back of the watch reproduces the drawing by a girl from Uganda, who won the IWC children's drawing competition.

The elegant Ingenieur Automatic Edition "Laureus Sport for Good Foundation" (Ref. IW323909), with its three hands, is a classic in the Ingenieur watch family and features a timeless, distinctively clear design together with protection against magnetic fields. The sporty timepiece far exceeds the Swiss standards laid down for protection against magneticfields in watches. The chunky, screw-in crown is generously sized and shielded by solid protective shoulders. Despite its elegant appearance, the Ingenieur Automatic Edition "Laureus Sport for Good Foundation" is thus extremely functional, robust and suitable for everyday use. One of the hallmarks of the Laureus special editions, along with their blue dial, is the engraving on the case back.

The Ingenieur Automatic Edition "Laureus Sport for Good Foundation" is the ninth in a series of special editions that IWC traditionally releases to support the work of the Laureus foundation. Joining Goris Verburg, Managing Director IWC Schaffhausen North East Asia, and Edwin Moses, Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy, was Chinese artistic gymnast, multiple Olympic gold medal winner and world champion, Li Xiaopeng. Together, they presented this limited classic timepiece to the press, whose dial in the characteristic Laureus blue is an indication that its mission goes far beyond merely displaying the time.

Recently named as a new ambassador for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, Li Xiaopeng showed great respect for its valuable work. "The Foundation has an enormous influence on the lives of many disadvantaged children," stressed Li Xiaopeng. "Children exposed to dire circumstances, whether in the middle of a big city or wartorn region, need something to hold on to. Laureus projects give them a cause for optimism and encourage team spirit, regardless of the colour of their skin, religion or ethnic background." Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy Edwin Moses produced a number of figuresto underline the success of Laureus' actions: "Since 2000, Laureus has collected over 60 million euros. This money has enabled us to support 150 local projects in 35 countries and has pushed the lives of one-and-a-half million young people in a more positive direction."

  • IWC - Ingenieur Dual Time

The Ingenieur Dual Time is a powerful-looking timepiece in a stainless steel case, featuring a classic appearance. With a diameter of only 43 millimetres, it seems rather understated when compared with the larger Ingenieur models but it radiates a true elegance.

Current local time is shown by the hour and minute hands on a dial available either silver-plated or in black. The time can be advanced or turned back in one-hour steps via the crown, even when crossing the International Date Line. While the seconds hand with its pointed red tip goes around, the second time - the time at home, for example - is indicated by another hand with an arrowhead tip on the outer 24-hour ring.
To make it easier to differentiate between day and night, the top half of the ring, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., is darker than the lower half.

The striking bores in the bezel were the brainchild of watch designer Gerald Genta. In the case of the legendary Ingenieur SL (Ref. 1832) from IWC Schaffhausen, unveiled in 1976, he placed the five functional holes directly on the rim itself, where they originally served to hold it firmly in position. These bores and the entire case architecture rapidly established themselves as the hallmark of the entire Ingenieur family.

The functions of the watch are powered by the automatic Calibre 35720, that offers a power reserve of 44 hours.
The watch is worn on an elegant fine stainless steel bracelet.

  • IWC - Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition "Le Petit Prince"

IWC Schaffhausen celebrates the 70th birthday of the highly popular novel "The Little Prince" with the launch of two limited special editions: the Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition "Le Petit Prince" and the Pilot's Watch Mark XVII Edition "Le Petit Prince". With these, IWC pays tribute to legendary writer, pilot and adventurer Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Since 2006, the Manufacture has maintained a cordial partnership with Saint-Exupery's heirs and their charitable organization, the Antoine de Saint-Exupery Youth Foundation.
"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye." Seventy years ago, this quotation and others like it literally enchanted the world when illustrious author and pilot Antoine de Saint-Exupery published his parable "The Little Prince". This profound tale about the little boy with the wheaten hair is one of the bestselling books in world literature and has been translated into more than 270 languages. "With our long tradition of manufacturing Pilot's Watches, we feel bound to Antoine de Saint-Exupery in many ways," explains Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen. "We were inspired by a man who was also a passionate designer and who obtained his first aeronautical patent in 1936, the very year IWC unveiled its first Special Pilot's Watch. We have enormous admirationfor a pilot who was prepared to risk his life in the name of technological progress. And we are honouring Saint-Exupery, the great writer and humanist, with whose works many of us grew up."
The Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition "Le Petit Prince" houses the impressive IWC-manufactured 51613 calibre with Pellaton automatic winding and 7-day power reserve. The latter's display in the counterat "3 o'clock" is a constant reminder of the movement's high efficiency. It generates enough energy to fuel a wealth of watchmaking complications, such as the perpetual calendar with its four-digit year display as well as displays for the date, day and month. All the displays are easily adjusted via the crown and advance automatically. The perpetual calendar will not require intervention by a watchmaker until2100, a year that breaks with the conventional 4-year cycle and will not be a leap year. The midnight blue dial contrasts the characteristically bold cockpit design with the more understated displays of the perpetual calendar.
The Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition "Le Petit Prince" is the first of IWC's Big Pilot's Watches to feature the classic moon phase display. Here, the moon is further ornamented by the little prince, who gazes at the star-studded night sky from his own tiny planet. The figure is derived from the famous original drawing by Antoine de Saint-Exupery that decorates the front cover of his best-known work. The 18-carat gold medallion on the rotor also features the little prince and can be admired on the reverse side of the watch through the sapphire-glass back. The original title of the first edition, namely "LE PETIT PRINCE", can be found engraved on the winding rotor.
The special edition in red gold is limited to 270 watches. Also included with the watch is a high-class edition featuring two rarities produced exclusively for IWC: first, a reproduction of the original first edition in English entitled "The Little Prince"; and, second, a reprint of the original handwritten manuscript in French, "Le Petit Prince".
Part of the proceeds from sales of the special editions Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition "Le Petit Prince" and the Pilot's Watch Mark XVII Edition "Le Petit Prince" will go to Antoine de Saint-Exupery Youth Foundation to support its worldwide commitment against illiteracy.

  • IWC - The Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 in Auckland

Auckland, 15 March 2012 - The fourth leg of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 from Sanya to Auckland involved a tactically demanding offshore challenge and has proved to be the most exciting stage of the race so far. After a stiffly contested leg, the Groupama sailing team claimed its first victory in an open-water stage. As Official Timekeeper, Swiss watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen awarded the prestigious trophy for its 24-hour Speed Record Challenge for the second, consecutive time to the crew of Puma Ocean Racing.

The fourth leg of the event likewise involved something unprecedented in the Volvo Ocean Race. Because of a typhoon warning in the South China Sea, the organizers decided to hold a provisional preliminary heat in Sanya Bay off the Chinese coast. Following the restart, almost all of the teams found their best form, and the final sprint to Auckland developed into an exciting finale. Groupama finally succeeded in taking the lead and was the first team to storm into Auckland Harbour last Saturday. Behind them, just short of a day before the expected arrival time, a nail-biting duel developed between three of the teams for second place, which Puma finally claimed for itself. The third team home was Telefónica, followed by Camper in fourth, while Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing and Sanya completed the leg in fifth and sixth place respectively. At the halfway stage of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012, it is still very much an open question whether overall leader Telefónica can hold on to its advantage in the remaining legs of the competition.

    Welcome to Auckland

It has been 10 years since the race last visited the City of Sails and stopover bosses were guaranteeing a glorious return during the 10 days of celebrations. The race has visited Auckland on eight occasions since the first edition in 1973, but this is the first time it has been back since 2001- 2002. The sailing-crazy city of Auckland gave the teams an enthusiastic reception and a traditional Maori welcome. Their arrival in Auckland could almost be described as "sailing coming home", because virtually all the teams have at least one New Zealander on board. From Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, the team sponsored by IWC Schaffhausen, 38-year-old watch leader and native Kiwi Craig Satterthwaite is particularly happy to be there: "New Zealand's my home. I'm lucky enough to see lots of the rest of the world but each time I come back only confirms to me that it's a very special place. It's unique and I hope it stays that way." By now, the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 has reached the halfway stage. But a number of daunting challenges still lie ahead of the crews, as Craig Satterthwaite confirms: "This upcoming leg will be the toughest physically and mentally. The Southern Ocean is what this race is all about: there's no tougher challenge in offshore sailing. Period."

    IWC 24-hour Speed Record Challenge
Watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen is Official Timekeeper of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 and sponsors the 24-hour Speed Record Challenge. The team that covers the greatest distance within a period of 24 hours in Halftime: IWC Schaffhausen and the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 in each leg is awarded the much-coveted trophy. After racking up 527.819 nautical miles, the crew of Puma took the IWC trophy for the fourth leg awarded by Edwin de Vries, Brand Manager Richemont Australia. The overall fastest time over the entire 8 months of the race will land each of the 11 members of the winning crew a Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph Edition "Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012". IWC Schaffhausen will present the watches to the winning crew at the end of the race in Galway, Ireland. The six teams will set sail on Sunday for the fifth leg. The route takes them 6,705 nautical miles to the Brazilian harbour town of Itajaí, where they are expected on 4 April 2012.

  • IWC - The Horological Wingman

    WORLDTEMPUS - 24 January 2012

"We are a masculine watch brand," Robert Pennartz, newly appointed director of Benelux and Scandinavia, stated over a quick lunch inside the Palexpo premises that houses the annual SIHH watch show. A statement like that should not raise any eyebrows when you consider the popular Swiss watch brand's lineup this year. Masculine indeed, manly even.
The IWC collection is built around its pillars and every year one of the pillars is presented with new, updated models. This is the year of the Pilot's collection and this is what we saw when we visited the inside of IWC's booth: a life-size fighter plane leaving no doubts about this year's theme greeting you.

The 2012 Pilot's collection offers not only perpetual calendars with digital indication and a smart rotor shaped like an airplane, it also boasts more ceramic timepieces than ever before at IWC. Two of these even sport an "instant vintage" dial layout with pre-tinted SuperLumiNova, which seems to be the plat du jour of quite a few watch companies these days. This forced vintage look is perhaps wearing a bit thin already, but admittedly it is quite fitting on the new IWC Top Gun Miramar mode.
    The Miramars
This model line is named for the Californian training grounds where the legendary Top Gun jetfighters were originally educated between 1969 and 1996 before the grounds were relocated to Fallon, Nevada. The 48 mm Big Pilot Top Gun Miramar (€ 16,100) and the pilot's chronograph Top Gun Miramar, only slightly smaller with a generous diameter of 46 millimeters (€ 11,200), offer new looks never seen before at IWC. Beside the pre-tinted look, these models are also equipped with a green textile strap that looks and feels like the material used for a jetfighter's overall.

Interestingly enough, the latter is now powered by an in-house chronograph movement, Caliber 89365, which offers a flyback function as well as a power reserve of 68 hours.
These are undoubtedly two very appealing timepieces for the man who likes to wear a large, masculine watch without being weighed down by a stainless steel case. The black light-weight ceramic offers better wearability and the soft textile strap adds to the comfort.
    Steel wingman
If black ceramic and pre-tinted hands and hour markers are not your thing, don't worry. IWC also introduced other handsome wingmen such as the 45-millimeter Pilot's Watch Worldtimer crafted in stainless steel, which is apparently an editorial favorite at Worldtempus. In fact, this model rocks so much, we have to ask what took them so long to bring it out?
Of course a pilot's watch should be fitted with a world time function and this model is destined to be an instant classic. It will be interesting to see how this worldtimer retailing for € 8,550 will be received by the public, but it certainly deserves an all round degree of success. And who knows…perhaps IWC will even pamper frequent flyers with a future pink gold or titanium version of this Pilot's Watch Worldtimer.

  • IWC - 30,800 euros for the Unique Ingenieur Automatic Mission Earth Edition "Adventure Ecology"

An online auction organised by watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen for a unique and valuable timepiece ended on a high note last weekend. IWC is donating the entire proceeds from the highest bid of 30,800 euros for the unique Ingenieur Automatic Mission Earth Edition "Adventure Ecology" in platinum to the "Sculpt the Future Foundation". For official partner IWC Schaffhausen, the auction was a way of paying tribute to the successful Plastiki expedition.

On 23 July 2010, 3 days before the arrival of the Plastiki expedition in Sydney, an auction for the unique platinum timepiece opened on the expedition website at www.theplastiki.com. The reserve price for the only platinum version of the Ingenieur Automatic Mission Earth Edition "Adventure Ecology" from IWC Schaffhausen was 30,000 euros. When the hammer finally came down at 12.00 hours CET on 7 August 2010, this unique, valuable timepiece went to a watch lover from UK for 30,800 euros. IWC is donating the entire proceeds from the auction to the "Sculpt the Future Foundation", which will be channelling the funds into the ongoing Plastiki project by the name of "The Plastiki Pod". "As a CO2-neutral company, we are particularly pleased that the proceeds from the auction will be used to support inspiring ideas in the struggle against environmental pollution," commented IWC CEO Georges Kern, following the successful auction. "It means that the basic idea behind the Plastiki expedition will live on."

    A watch on a mission
The Ingenieur Automatic Mission Earth Edition "Adventure Ecology" is the expedition watch par excellence. Water-resistant to 12 bar, the case features protective shoulders for the crown and houses the IWC-manufactured 80110 calibre, which has a soft-iron inner case to shield it against magnetic fields and a shock absorption system as protection against impacts. For their voyage lasting several months, the members of the Plastiki were equipped with the stainlesssteel model, which is limited to 1,000 pieces.
Aboard the Plastiki, an 18-metre-long catamaran made almost entirely of reclaimed plastic bottles, they sailed approximately 8,000 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco to Sydney. Adventurer and environmentalist David de Rothschild used the expedition to draw attention to the health of our oceans, in particular the devastating consequences of plastic pollution. His aim is to bring about a change in attitude and persuade people to see garbage as a valuable resource. The spectacular Plastiki, with its solar panels, wind turbines and bicyclepowered electricity generators embodies Adventure Ecology's vision of a future in which everything is possible as long as we are prepared to get off the beaten track.

    The "Sculpt the Future Foundation"
The "Sculpt the Future Foundation" is a UKregistered charitable organisation that supports creative and innovative anti-pollution projects designed to bring about a reversal of thinking and a future-oriented form of environmental protection.
The foundation's work is based on the belief that investment in grass-roots organisations and small-scale initiatives is worthwhile because these tend to be driven by young people whose greatest asset is their passion and commitment. www.sculptthefuturefoundation.org
