Designed to set the tempo for the first years of the twentieth century, watches had to adapt to endure the First World War. Functionality, reliability, precision and durability, thus, became the crucial properties. In order to protect the fragile glass covering the dial, some watches were protected behind fully fledged metal grilles.

With the Vintage WW2 Military Tourbillon - a limited edition of 20 pieces - Bell & Ross is reinterpreting this glorious watchmaking past, with an exceptional timepiece that incorporates four complications - tourbillon, precision indicator, regulator and power-reserve - within a 45 mm titanium casing, equipped with a protective cover.

Nowadays made from sapphire, watch glasses are very solid and no longer require protective shields. The cover of the WW2 Military Tourbillon becomes thus an integral part of the watch, which enhances the wearer's ability to read the dial thanks to its distinctive curves that emphasize the hands. The openings in the design of the metal reveal all of the information provided by the timepiece and its complications.

The crosswise layout of the various functions combines readability and functionality. The contrast of the matte black flange around the circumference of the dial, the "Côte de Geneve" decorated metallic surfaces and additional counters, which play on this contrast to reinforce readability, creates visual depth and a «three dimensional» effect.

Remaining loyal to its military inspiration in giving priority to the readability of short time cycles, the WW2 Military Tourbillon features a regulator movement, a watchmaking principle whereby hours and minutes are displayed via separate dials. While the minute hand has a central axis and sweeps across the entire dial, the hour hand has a dedicated miniature dial positioned at 12 o'clock.
At the 3 o'clock position, another hand (Trust Index), indicates the level of precision of the movement on the basis of the tension of the barrel spring. At 9 o'clock is the power reserve indicator (5 days).
Finally, the dial opens at 6 o'clock revealing the tourbillon's pink gold "cage", of which a rotation lasting one minute allows the Bell & Ross «&» symbol to play the role of a small second.

The Bell & Ross designers have opted to make the Vintage WW2 Military Tourbillon a link between yesterday, today and tomorrow. Although the casing seemingly stems from the past, with its shield, itspatina style and its oversized striated crown, it is made from satin-polished Grade 5 titanium, to which a PVD treatment lends a "gunmetal gray" color.
The use of a sophisticated material such as titanium enables the reconciliation of the 45 mm diameter of the casing with Bell & Ross requirements regarding weight and strength.

The bracelet, available in aged leather or brown alligator skin and reminiscent of the elegance of early wristwatches, plays the "wearer comfort" card thanks to its flexibility and the presence of movable lugs.
 

A graphic style inspired by the variometer or climb
Bell & Ross designers have borrowed the graphic characteristics of the climb to create an original and innovative display of time.
• The frame reflects the style of the original instrument. Instead of the variometer, a power reserve indicator allows the user to measure remaining power, which is vital for the smooth functioning of the movement. This indicator is yellow, contrasting with the black of the dial and the other time information. The date is also displayed in a window at 3 o'clock.
• The typeface of the graduation is reminiscent of CLIMB. Since it only has one white hand, the hour hand has been darkened to render the best imitation of the original instrument.
• The hands and the digits are covered in a white photo luminescent coating, contrasting with the black of the dial, and echoing the legibility principles of professional aviation instruments.
• The anti-glare, matt black carbon finish of the case is inspired by the color of an instrumentation panel, designed to make the dials easier to read by eliminating glare.

Military watches: time rediscovered

Bell & Ross pays homage to the history of military timepieces by presenting a pocket watch - the PW1 and its wrist watch version - the Vintage WW1. The brand's designs have always been influenced by the reinterpretation of military watch design history. "We are delving into the past even more in order to round out our collection," explains Bell & Ross designer, Bruno Belamich. The challenge? To remain faithful to present day watch-making standards while adapting them to Bell & Ross design principles.

From pocket watch to wrist watch

The reimagining of those bygone days has resulted in the creation of two types of watch, representing two eras: a fob watch of rare dignity, the PW1 which stands for Pocket Watch 1 and the introduction of a wristwatch christened the Vintage WW1 for Wrist Watch 1. First worn by French soldiers during World War 1, these wristwatches were then tested by pilots in the 1920s before being declared technically reliable in the 1930s. The Vintage WW1 pays tribute to this era and takes its inspiration from the stylistic designs of the "Roaring Twenties". A true missing "time" link between the pocket watch and the wristwatch of the 1940s, the shapes and functions of the Vintage WW1 reflect Bell & Ross's DNA.

A watch from the past reflecting the present

The Vintage PW1 and Vintage WW1 models stand out as reincarnations of the past that reflect the present. While the models are distinguished by their finishes and movements with complementary functions, they nevertheless share common characteristics:

• A quality Swiss movement. 

• The large fob-watch type diameter. 

• The grooved crown, inspired by the ones handled by pilots while wearing gloves, is easy to use. 

• The domed crystal gives the watch a vintage look. Unlike the original, it is made from sapphire, a hard-wearing material, using perfected techniques. 

• The dial, with its clean design, optimizes legibility, a characteristic of all Bell & Ross watches. 

Unique to the Vintage WW1 line, the horns replicate original wire handles that were soldered to the case which, when combined with the elegance of the straps, evoke the design of the first wrist watches, yet are ergonomically adapted for the comfort demanded by today's men.

Classic and elegant models

Their polished steel case, combined with a domed, sunburst dial epitomizes the classic design that is inspired by the past.

• The large PW1 fob watch is attached to a long chain. Its immaculate finish and "barleycorn" guilloche caseback enhance its allure. This collector's item is intended only for true purists who will appreciate its manual winding movement.

• The WW1 with its classic design is available in three movements: a version with power reserve indicator (WW1-97), a large date version (WW1-96) and a version with large date and power reserve indicator (WW1 - 90). Each model comes with an alligator strap and steel pin buckle that set off their timeless elegance.

Two new authentic and military models

In its authentic Military version, the WW1-92 features a matte grey steel case and a distressed strap. With its black case, the WW1 - 92 Heritage model reinterprets the styles of the past- the sand-colored index markings convey the effects of age and the leather strap acquires a patina over time. Both models have hours and seconds movements.

The hour, minute and second graduations have been separated to promote legibility and prominently display the minutes on the large dial. This arrangement is inspired by the so-called navigation or observation watches used by military pilots to calculate their direction or speed. The fluorescent triangle at 12 o'clock enabled the pilots to instantly get their bearings, even in the dark.

Arrival of a new style

The Vintage WW1 is directly inspired by the measurement tools of professionals from a bygone era and could have been worn by a 1920s pilot. In the 21st century it will be worn by all those who desire a timepiece inspired by military watch history. A masculine icon, this incredibly refined watch paves the way for a new style - military neo-classicism.

Bell & Ross has created the Vintage Collection to pay tribute to the aviators of the 1940s who were the first professionals to consider the wristwatch as an aid to their missions.

2011 now sees the addition of a new model to the Vintage Collection: the Vintage Original Carbon.
Bell & Ross has used the latest technologies to combine the authenticity of vintage watches with the legibility principles of an instrumentation panel, all in a single wristwatch.
