  • Chanel - The "Premiere Flying Tourbillon" Watch

On the 25th anniversary of CHANEL's first watch the Premiere, whose shape was inspired by the octagonal geometry of the No. 5 perfume bottle stopper and the Place Vendôme, Chanel offers women the opportunity to enter into the world of high mechanical complications. Appropriately, this feminine incursion into the universe of watchmaking complexity is just as mysterious as it is beautiful and poetic.
After its first Tourbillon on a J12 model in 2005, this year, for the first time, Chanel presents a flying Tourbillon.

This exceptional Tourbillon, developed in close collaboration between Chanel and the Swiss manufacturers, engineers and master-watchmakers Renaud & Papi (APRP SA) - the advanced research and development branch of Audemars Piguet - is a first for both companies.
Decorated with the motif of the camellia, a tribute to Mademoiselle Chanel's favorite flower, this flying Tourbillon beats away discreetly and almost secretly at the heart of the Premiere watch. The floral design creates a delicate texture with the use of interlocked petals and a heart that is paved with diamonds. The flying Tourbillon makes one rotation per minute, with the petals indicating the seconds.
Equipped with a power reserve of 40 hours, this movement ("Camelia Flying Tourbillon" Caliber) has been mounted on a custom-designed rectangular bottom plate. All the finishes and parts that are chamfered, drawn and circular grained by hand, adhere to the highest Swiss watchmaking traditions.
The hour and minute hands are off-center and set higher on the black ceramic dial.

The watch case maintains the perfectly balanced original proportions, albeit in new dimensions:
28.5 mm by 37 mm, compared to 19 mm by 26 mm of the traditional Premiere.
The case, the bezel and the crown are set entirely with baguette-cut or roundcut diamonds or precious stones.
Produced in a limited edition of 20 numbered pieces, the "Premiere Flying Tourbillon" in 18-carat white gold is set with 101 baguette-cut diamonds for a total of 5.2 carats, and 127 brilliant-cut diamonds for a total of 2 carats. Each piece requires 23 hours of setting and over one hundred hours of assembly.

  • Audemars Piguet - New Boutique in the Kingdom of Bahrain

Audemars Piguet, the oldest watch manufacturer still in the hands of its founding families, is taking the opportunity of its latest boutique opening to present its new flagship launch for 2010, the Royal Oak Offshore Grand Prix chronograph. After Madrid, Kiev and the recent extension of its New York showroom, the 19th Audemars Piguet Boutique has now been opened at the heart of the World Trade Center in Manama, capital of the Kingdom of Bahrain. It joins the "Moda Mall" and the 200 exclusive international brands within this luxury complex.

    The Boutique shop front

The majestic 240-metre high building, composed of two 50-floor twin towers resembling two huge sails, overlooks the magnificent Arabian Gulf and the Manama urban landscape. This skyscraper, the first to integrate wind pumps into its construction, is a modern interpretation of the traditional windmill and successfully associates technological innovations with environmental, design-oriented and functional concerns.
The architectural concept of the Audemars Piguet boutique echoes the brand's aesthetic identity codes through the use of elegant, natural and understated materials such as wood, glass and leather.
A single look at the boutique store front draws us into the heart of the Royal Oak collection thanks to its chequered aluminium pediment echoing the famous "grande tapisserie" dial motif. The outside windows create an effect of transparency, revealing broad printed hangings in the background and a pure, welcoming interior, while wenge and glass displays highlight the brand's latest creations.
Upon stepping through the broad glass doors, beams of light mark out the sales area and lead visitors towards the slender elongated showcases adorned with magnificent photos of iconic product visuals.
The Lounge area features a blend of traditional and modern elements, including wenge bookshelves carrying portraits of the company founders Jules-Louis Audemars and Edward-Auguste Piguet, the two family crests, along with high-tech screens showing the brand's latest 3D animations and thematic films. Within this cosy environment, customers can settle into a comfortable beige sofa and set off to discover the history of Fine Watchmaking by leafing through a number of beautiful Audemars Piguet books.

On either side of the rooms, oval-shaped lamps in warm chocolate and beige colours sutbly evoke the Millenary collection and its off-centred dial. Further enhancing the luminous, airy atmosphere, huge glass walls finely engraved with the tourbillon movement of an Audemars Piguet timepiece diffuse a soft, silvery light.

"Even though our distribution network is particularly well developed in the Middle East, we must constantly improve our visibility. This new point of sale - which reflects our fundamental brand values of Tradition, Daring and Excellence - is the third in this region, and we are planning to open a fourth in Riyadh, in Saudi Arabia. We have the immense privilege of sharing this moment with our three ambassadors, currently engaged in the first race in the 2010 Formula 1 motor-racing championship," said Mr. Philippe Merk, CEO of Audemars Piguet.
On the eve of the Bahrain season-opener, Rubens Barrichello, Jarno Trulli and Sebastien Buemi all accepted the invitation to attend this event and discover and celebrate the official launch of the Royal Oak Offshore Grand Prix collection, a product inspired by the world of competitive motor-racing.

The Royal Oak Offshore Grand Prix Collection, which received an extremely warm welcome at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie 2010 in Geneva last January, clearly expresses its affinities with the automobile world: the same passion for the design, the same incessant quest for mechanical performance. The dial counters evoke a dashboard instrument panel, the crown shape resembles a gear, and the bezel is reminiscent of a ventilated brake disc. In this collection composed of three timepieces issued in a limited series, each detail is the object of meticulous care and every model embodies an ultra-sophisticated choice of materials. The engines roar to the beat of an in-house manufactured self-winding chronograph. Lovers of high-speed thrills take note!

  • Audemars Piguet - World speed record for the Hydroptere

Hydrofoil trimaran sets a new world speed record of 50.17 knots (92.91 km/h)*, a wonderful gift from Alain Thebault, Thierry Lombard and their team to their new sponsor, Audemars Piguet
Barely two months after crossing the magical 50-knot threshold, the equivalent of breaking the sound barrier in aviation, l'Hydroptere confirmed its status as the planet's fastest flying trimaran, beating the world record at an average speed of 50.17 knots* over one nautical mile (92.91 km/h). Alain Thebault and his ten-man crew achieved this exceptional feat at their speed base in Hyeres on Sunday, November 8th, in a 28-knot northwesterly wind. L'Hydroptere capped off a fantastic series of records posted in the Mediterranean and set a new benchmark in the world of sailing.
"For 30 years, passion and daring have carried me forward, but this victory really belongs to our indomitable, tight-knit team. The historic record of more than 50 knots over one nautical mile is powerful because it lies at the frontier between the twin capacities of this extraordinary flying trimaran that is both a high-speed craft and an ocean-going sailboat. Our team now holds the top two speed records in the world, 51.36 knots over 500 metres and 50.17 knots over one nautical mile*, and we can now concentrate on ocean sailing in 2010", commented Alain Thebault.

This performance is a wonderful welcome gift for watchmaker Audemars Piguet, which had decided to associate itself with this incredible adventure a few weeks ago, along with private bankers Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch & Cie.
The union of Audemars Piguet and Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch & Cie around this project is almost natural: as age-old family businesses, they share many values, such as tradition, excellence and expertise. As entrepreneurs, they have a history marked by a commitment to innovation, discovery and inspiring challenges. "Our two firms share the same foundations and the same passions. So it was logical for us to come together on this unique, unconventional and avant-garde project that embodies incredibly powerful human and technological values", said Thierry Lombard, an avid sailor who is keen on challenges, sailing and technology. Before it became a project of the private bankers, whose founding year - 1796 - is written on the mainsail, l'Hydroptere was originally a personal project.
The 60-ft Hydroptere (from the Greek hydros, water, and ptera, wing), is a hydrofoil trimaran (the foils are actually underwater wings). It is a sleek and elegant craft with a central hull and a mast 28 metres high, stabilised by two side floats separated from the hull by huge 24-metre carbon crossbeams built at the Airbus plant in Nantes. The innovative design of the boat, which flies on submerged wings, cleverly constructed out of carbon and titanium, make it much faster, more durable and lightweight (only 6.5 tonnes). The flight envelope of the prototype is continuously defined and validated on a 3D flight simulator developed specifically for this carbon bird, which represents the new generation of extreme sailing.

Alain Thebault, designer and skipper of this Formula 1 of the seas, had always dreamt of making a boat fly. After 20 years of research and development, the flying boat is now a robust, powerful craft thanks to the help of eight retired engineers from Dassault Aviation and EADS-Airbus who volunteered their time. l'Hydroptere is the perfect combination of cutting edge technology, performance and human adventure. This unique project was created by a team of sailing buffs, engineers, technicians and aircraft manufacturers. In 2006, the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) joined the team and became "Official Scientific Adviser" to assist in advanced fields such as aero-hydrodynamics, composite materials, structural behaviour and video imaging.
The world of sailing is a field that Audemars Piguet knows well. As early as 1985, the watchmaking firm accompanied Peter Fehlmann, winner of the Whitbread. In 2000, it participated in its first America's Cup, with "Be hAPpy", and then went on to take part in the fantastic Swiss victories in the 31st and 32nd America's Cup. In 2008 and 2009, the watchmaker was alongside Ladycat on the Decision 35 circuit on Lake Geneva. Today, it has become one of two main sponsors in the wonderful world of l'Hydroptere. Audemars Piguet (Marketing) SA
Audemars Piguet has authored the most beautiful pages in the history of watchmaking in its quest for technological innovation, daring and excellence, ceaselessly pushing back the limits of the possible, a philosophy shared by l'Hydroptere.
Like Audemars Piguet, which can boast a number of horological performances including a many world firsts such as the creation in 1972 of the legendary Royal Oak, the first luxury steel watch; or the 2006 launch of the new high-performance, lubricant-free Audemars Piguet escapement, l'Hydroptere also has a long list of achievements to its credit. On Friday September 4th 2009, in Hyeres, France, Alain Thebault and his outstanding ten-man crew set two outright sailing speed world records: over 500 metres, at an average speed of 51.36 knots (95.118 km/h) and over one nautical mile (1,852 m) at an average of 48.74 knots (90.266 km/h). These records were ratified by the World Sailing Speed Record Council, the official keeper of all records pertaining to sailing. On November 8th, 2009, l'Hydroptere once again made history by setting a new record: an average speed of 50.17 knots, equivalent to 92.91 km/h, over one nautical mile* with a peak at 55.5 knots (102.78 km/h). Even if all records are made to be broken, this one will be very hard to match over that distance.
"Thanks to this historic double record, l'Hydroptere is confirmed as the fastest sailcraft on the planet. This exceptional performance is a tribute to the work of a determined and experienced team, which developed and implemented revolutionary and innovative solutions. We can fully relate to this extraordinary challenge, which is perfectly consistent with the pioneering and adventurous spirit of our brand," said Philippe Merk, CEO of Audemars Piguet.
But the human and sporting adventure does not stop there. Audemars Piguet and Lombard Odier are also sponsoring l'Hydroptere.ch, which will take to the waters of Lake Geneva, Switzerland, in summer 2010. It will serve as a laboratory and a think tank for the ambitious Hydroptere Maxi project, the ultimate goal of which is to sail round the world in 40 days, thus pursuing the dream of Jules Verne. "This great human and technological adventure is backed today by two prestigious firms that solidify our roots. The arrival of Audemars Piguet alongside private bankers Lombard Odier moves me deeply. This b support is a great motivational force for me and the team. In an ongoing humble family spirit, our ambition is now to unfurl our wings on the open seas, collectively and around the world," concludes Alain Thebault.

  • Audemars Piguet - A new partnership with Sebastien Buemi

Pursuing its long-established involvement in the field of motor racing, notably including its support for Jarno Trulli and sponsorship of the Tour Auto, the Manufacture Audemars Piguet is delighted to announce its partnership with the promising young Sebastien Buemi who has just turned 20 and is joining the exclusive ranks of Formula 1 racing drivers.

Switzerland has been eagerly awaiting another Formula 1 driver for the past 14 years. Associated with the image of the Manufacture Audemars Piguet, Sebastien Buemi from Canton Vaud will begin the 2009 season in Melbourne on March 29th, at the wheel of a Toro Rosso racing car powered by a Ferrari engine.

In signing the agreement with Sebastien Buemi in Lausanne on February 27th 2009, Audemars Piguet's CEO Philippe Merk stated: "For Audemars Piguet, partnering this young man with a resolutely fighting spirit was an entirely natural choice. He embodies our brand values through the Tradition of a family firmly anchored in the world of motor sports; the Excellence of his career to date; and the Daring he has displayed in reaching the highest level of his discipline".

After becoming Swiss champion in the mini-category at the age of 9 and then European go-kart champion in 2002, he began racing single-seater cars the following year. Right from the first race in the Formula BMW series, he was noticed by Red Bull who signed a five-year contract with him, leading to a string of impressive results including becoming Formula BMW vice-champion in 2005, Formula 3 vice-champion in 2007 and GP2 Asian series vice-champion in 2008.

His track record is studded with remarkable accomplishments such as the GP2 race at Magny-Cours, the opening event of the French Grand Prix in 2008: having set off from the 21st spot on the starting grid, he pulled off a brilliant victory, the first of his two wins in the 2008 European series. In the previous year, his talent had already propelled him to a spot as the third driver on the F1 Red Bull racing team, at the age of just 18.

On December 22nd 2008, Sebastien Buemi signed his first contract as a full-fledged Formula 1 racing driver, with the Scuderia Toro Rosso. The young man from Canton Vaud still has a long road ahead of him in his attempt to match and even surpass the feats of his illustrious fellow countrymen such as Toulo de Graffenried, Clay Regazzoni and Marc Surer.

Philippe Merk, Sebastien Buemi and Olivier Quillet

Audemars Piguet, a fervent sports enthusiast, is particularly proud to welcome this talented young Formula 1 driver into its circle of ambassadors. He will be wearing the iconic Royal Oak Offshore model, an undisputed benchmark in the field of Prestige sports.
