My husband is very picky about watches. I took a gamble on this and won. The watch looks expensive, The face is simple and elegant, and the band is a wonderful taupey-gray color. I would buy this A Lange and Sohne Datograph Black Dial Platinum Men's 405.035 watch again and would highly recommend it.

A special St Nicholas Day surprise awaited A. Lange & Söhne on 6 December 2011: at the great Press watch gala in Vienna, Lange's CEO Wilhelm Schmid gladly accepted four prizes.

First prize in the Grande Complication category was awarded to the RICHARD LANGE TOURBILLON "Pour le Merite" model, presented this year, at both the MunichTime and ViennaTime fairs. It was the first time, that one model succeeded two times in this royal league. In the "Classic Elegance" category, the SAXONIA THIN won first prize at MunichTime and second prize at ViennaTime. They were voted by readers of the Austrian daily newspaper "Die Presse", the supplement "Watchtime" of the German newspaper "Suddeutsche Zeitung", the watch magazine Chronos Germany and visitors to the exhibitions "MunichTime" and "ViennaTime", both held in November 2011. Altogether, 36.400 watch enthusiasts took part in the election. Since 1996, this watch collection has ranked among the most important in the sector.

With nine distinctions altogether, A. Lange & Söhne can once more look back on a successful year for its watches. Back in the spring, among other achievements, two models were awarded the "Golden Balance Wheel", the Japanese magazine Chronos bestowed a first prize, and readers of the German wristwatch magazine conferred more prizes. And in November, the company's founder, Walter Lange, received the "Caesar Best Honoris" prize in Bucharest for his services to the watch industry. That makes a total of more than 160 distinctions received by A. Lange & Söhne since 1994.

After the launch of A. Lange & Söhne shops in Dresden, Shanghai, Tokyo and Seoul, the exclusive German watch brand opens its fifth boutique in Hong Kong, welcoming watch connoisseurs in the metropolitan area as well as neighbouring Mainland China to experience the works of art bearing the quality seal "Made in Germany" in Asia's major luxury hub.

To celebrate this significant step of business development, the brand held a grand opening for its first boutique in Hong Kong on 15 September 2011. Many watch aficionados followed the invitation to share the craftsmanship, precision and above all, the passion that goes into the timepieces bearing the signature "A. Lange & Söhne".
In order to celebrate the occasion, the brand presented the Richard Lange Tourbillon "Pour le Merite" Handwerkskunst. Limited to 15 exemplars, this special edition demonstrates the artisanal skills of the manufactory at the highest level. Its case made of honey-cloured gold houses a fusee-and-chain transmission as well as a tourbillon with a patented stop-seconds mechanism. The underlying purpose shared by both of these grand complications is to improve precision.

A. Lange & Söhne Hong Kong, an exclusive world of experiences on a smaller scale, is a place where time is at home and where visitors are invited to encounter the history and philosophy of Lange watchmaking artistry. After all, A. Lange & Söhne timepieces are well received among the watch collectors, connoisseurs and watch aficionados in Hong Kong, hence China. For Franck Giacobini, Managing Director of A. Lange & Söhne for the Asia Pacific region, the opening of A. Lange & Söhne's first mono-brand store in Hong Kong therefore is "an important step to further enhance the brand's image and the relationship with its ever increasing number of fans in the region."

This year's new models from A. Lange & Söhne are going on a trip of about 22,000 kilometres as they are presented from 21 February to 19 April in the four international boutiques of this traditional brand from Saxony, Germany. This gives watch aficionados and friends of the brand the opportunity to examine at first hand the latest highlights of the Lange art of watchmaking.

The 2011 collection is an expression of A. Lange & Söhne's esteem of the exceptional. The new models were received with great enthusiasm in January at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) by both the international press and the trade. Pride of place here was given to the Richard Lange Tourbillon "Pour le Merite", which once again showed that complications are one of the strengths of the Lange manufactory. A further highlight was the Lange Zeitwerk Striking Time which, in addition to a jumping numeral display, also has a quarter-hour chime, thereby striking a new note for the brand. The enhanced and extended Saxonia family demonstrates unmatched craftsmanship. The elegantly designed Saxonia Dual Time turns out to be the perfect travel companion. And at a height of just 5.9 millimetres the Saxonia Thin is the flattest watch ever made by Lange.

The tour started with an exhibition from 12 to 26 February in the first A. Lange & Söhne boutique in Dresden. The models then set out on tour and will be presented to a select audience at exclusive premieres in the three Asian brand boutiques. From 10 to 15 March the collection will be on show in Tokyo's elegant Ginza shopping district. From there it moves on to Shanghai, where the exhibition can be seen from 23 to 29 March. The last stop on the tour will be from 6 to 12 April in Seoul, where the traditional brand opened its most recent shop in December on Lotte Avenue. The expansion of its presence in the emerging markets of Asia is a logical step for the traditional German watch brand whose masterpieces are at home in the very top echelons of the luxury watch market.
As with the shops in Dresden, Shanghai and Tokyo, A. Lange & Söhne Seoul also reflects the personality of the brand and its philosophy - "State-of-the-Art Tradition". Every detail of the facilities and ambience embodies the same spirit of perfect craftsmanship and technical innovation that is expressed by the exclusive watches themselves. For instance, the collection drawers housing the precious timepieces have fronts made from Meissen porcelain. And a replica of the famous Five-Minute Clock from Dresden's Semperoper is on display in all four shops, reflecting the history of Lange watchmaking that stretches back for more than 165 years. The central focus here, though, is on the art of the watchmaker of today. The entire collection of handcrafted timepieces from Saxony can be experienced first-hand at A. Lange & Söhne Seoul.

Whether they are simple or complicated, all watches by A. Lange & Söhne are made according to the same high quality standards and display the same degree of flawless craftsmanship. One of them is the new 1815, which was presented at this year's Geneva Watch Salon SIHH - a simple three-dial watch made in the best Lange tradition that will be available soon.
More than 60 highly qualified Lange employees - called finishers - focus exclusively on the finishes of parts made in Lange's own workshops. They are proficient in all finishing techniques for metal surfaces, even some that had already been forgotten. When the brand was re-established in the 1990s, these techniques were painstakingly recreated, in order to instruct new team members. It takes a qualified watchmaker at least two years to master all cuts and polishes.
The flat polish on the escape wheel and escape wheel plate of the 1815, for example. The finisher creates the mirror finish by rubbing the part on special foils treated with a layer of diamond dust. In order to produce an absolutely flawless flat polish, the part is mounted on a small disc of elder pith and slid across the foils in a figure-eight movement. The finisher uses three foils with increasingly fine grains, down to just 0.5 micrometres. At first glance, it looks easy. But even the most talented finisher needs at least six months of practice before he or she has mastered the flat polish with consistent results. In addition, each step requires the utmost cleanliness. A single speck of dust is enough to ruin the work of several hours.
Chamfering is another example. The outer edges of the three-quarter plate in German silver are broken at an angle of 45 degrees and polished with paste and a rotating wooden disc. Lange tested dozens of different materials to find that limewood is the perfect carrier for the polishing paste if the part is made from German silver. Another challenge for the steady hand of the finisher: The chamfer must be exactly 0.2 millimetres wide along the entire length of the edge. Even the edges of the smallest openings, such as the one for the winding spring, are finished with this complex technique.Many other finishing techniques, such as circular graining, band ribbing, linear finish, sunray finish, and perlage, are combined in the movement of the 1815, turning it into a small work of art. The result is an aesthetic composition of different material colours and textures. Polished surfaces and edges create beautiful reflections that can also be viewed through the sapphire crystal back, warming the heart of any true watch aficionado.
