The top lot was one of the only ten models of the reference 5029 by Patek Philippe cased in platinum. Produced in 1997, this automatic minute repeating hinged wristwatch combines the time-honoured tradition of minute-repeating watches with the contemporary desire for self-winding wristwatches. Its understated design belies the complexity of the movement it houses. It surpassed its pre-sale estimate to sell for CHF $561,116.
A large Greubel Forsey tourbillon wristwatch with 72-hour power reserve indication soared above estimate and achieved $343,520. Made circa 2010, this highly technical timepiece in 18 carat pink gold is the first watch made in a limited edition of 11 pieces (est. $244,000-350,000).
A rare model of the RM 025 - the Richard Mille's first diving watch - realised $228,678 (lot 142, est. $191,000-265,000). Manufactured in 2008, this 18 carat pink gold and titanium skeletonised tourbillon chronograph redefines the rules of diving watches, combining the complications of tourbillon, chronograph, power reserve and torque indication within an impressive and massive water resistant case.
A Vacheron Constantin fine platinum skeletonised tourbillon wristwatch, circa 2000 tripled its pre-sale low estimate to bring $162,190 (lot 156).
Vintage wristwatches
Rolex performed extremely well, confirming the b demand for rare vintage models by the brand. Leading this group was a rare example of Rolex Daytona ref. REF 6265/6263 bearing the Coat of arms of the Sultanate of Oman on its dial. Manufactured circa 1980, this 18 carat yellow gold chronograph wristwatch realised $156,145 (lot 194, est. $133,000-196,000).
Vintage wristwatches by Patek Philippe were also high in demand. The selection was highlighted by illustrious provenance, with two timepieces that belonged to Georges Simenon (1903-1989) - the masterly Belgian novelist whose Inspector Maigret Mysteries made him one of the most widely published authors of the 20th century. Made in 1961, his rare 18 carat yellow gold wristwatch ref. 2591 - quintupled the pre-sale expectation, selling for $16,370 (lot 78, est. $3,200-5,300).
Clocks, antique pocket watches and complicated timepieces
Following the auction record established by Sotheby's Hong Kong for a Patek Philippe Clock in April 2013, this sale included a unique gilt-brass solar desk clock made by Patek Philippe in 1957 which almost tripled its low estimate and achieved $174,278 (lot 285, est. $64,000-85,000). Decorated with a scene in cloisonne enamel, this timepiece was produced in 1957 - probably for a special order. It is one of the earliest solar-powered dome clocks released by the Geneva manufacture.
Testament to Vacheron Constantin's long tradition in the manufacture of complicated watches, an important 18 carat gold watch made circa 1912 brought $100,739. It was one of the very few examples by the Swiss watchmaker known in the market, with a perpetual calendar, a minute repeater and a chronograph (lot 258, est. $64,000-106,000).
A rare pair of silver keyless pocket horometrical watches made by Juvet for the Chinese market sold for $81,850, more than 10 times the pre-sale estimate (lot 311)
