Jaeger-LeCoultre - Tutto Fellini!
Autumn in Paris will be resolutely Felliniesque with the "Fellini, la Grande Parade" exhibition to be held at the Jeu de Paume, a complete retrospective of his films and a series of lectures at the French national film library, as well as other encounters at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Paris.
In 2006, Jaeger-LeCoultre announced its commitment to the field of cultural patronage, and particularly in the area of images and photography, by associating with the work of the Jeu de Paume in promoting photographic culture worldwide. Driven by the same desire, Jaeger- LeCoultre and the Jeu de Paume naturally decided to associate in a certain number of major patronage operations.
In 2009, the brand's support for this exceptional exhibition dedicated to Fellini's work will represent a further expression of the dedication to film-making of the Manufacture Jaeger- LeCoultre, which this year also served as official sponsor of the Venice International Film Festival for the fifth consecutive time.
Taking on a Fellini exhibition involves returning to the very roots of Felliniesque creation, by examining and revealing the processes of transformation, modification, borrowing or layering mingling film excerpts, photographic documents, magazine coverage, television images and the work of other artists. The exhibition is clearly a pluridisciplinary undertaking aiming to offer a new perspective of Fellini's approach to cinema.
Events and historical facts, History with a capital H or popular anecdotes, biographical or fictional elements are the multiple raw materials from which Fellini - by alternating or mingling techniques of confrontation, resonance and dialogue - deftly builds the specific nature of his narrative framework and the originality of his visual environments.
Expressing the artistic context surrounding his work through an exhibition implies attempting to detect and explore the mechanisms of Fellini's fundamental creative process. While many now legendary scenes have established themselves as the perfect embodiments of Fellini's fertile imagination, it would seem that an exhaustive analysis of the creative context can now offer us a whole new vision of his work. This possibility is entirely in tune with Fellini's own character. Trained in his youth in the field of caricatures, and having earned a living by sketching portraits of American soldiers on leave, Fellini always retained his acutely perceptive skills that made him capable of capturing more from our daily materiality than a mere "freeze frame".
The Jeu de Paume exhibition partially unveils some of the inner workings of Fellini's approach to his art by highlighting the process of absorbing reality, of which he was a peerless exponent. It is essentially composed of photographs, drawings by Fellini, original film posters, magazines from the period and film excerpts.
