  • GPHG 2015 - Ladies' watches

Competition was stiff this year with 21 watches entered in the Ladies' category. The six pre-selected by the jury in this first round reveal a preference for more traditional looking round dials. It was disappointing news for the rectangular Chanel Boyfriend Beige Gold watch that was, in my view, an outstanding model, sober yet discreetly luxurious and ultimately modern.
As a general rule, in the Ladies' watch category, my preference goes for timepieces that embody something purely feminine. Here, the primary criterion is aesthetics rather than mechanics. A ladies' watch should not be a smaller version of a man's watch, or one that is "feminized" by a setting of pave diamonds. It should capture a certain feminine essence.

Of the six, the Piaget Limelight Gala, appears that do just that, with the simplicity of its curvaceous design and its pure lines. It is the ultimate feminine watch, minimalist in its form, just enough ornamentation with way of diamonds, with a design that suggests undulating movement and infinite grace.

The Hermes Arceau Petite Lune with Diamonds also incorporates a feminine yet sporty spirit that is inherent in the saddle-making tradition of the house. The suggestion of the stirrup and the tilted Arabic numerals are attractive details that make this watch lighthearted and unfussy to wear.

Among this year's women's watch contenders, my favorite is Audemars Piguet's Millenary. While I have always been partial to Millenary's unusual oval shape and distinctive dial layout, the women's novelties stand apart not only for design, but also for the new manual-winding movement, the caliber 5201, which was built to fit the oval case. The complex, multilevel dial reveals the movement's fine finishing with Côtes de Geneve and perlage decoration, plus you can also admire the pulsing escapement, so you are always aware of the watch's beating heart.
Blending classic elements, such as Roman numerals and mother-of-pearl dials, with an unconventional design, Millenary fuses contemporary with timelessness, which is my taste—not too avant-garde, trendy, or gimmicky, but modern with enduring style. As a testament to its staying power, Millenary launched 20 years ago. The shimmering mother-of-pearl and a sprinkling of sparkling diamonds balance the Millenary's technical presence with femininity. Even at a glance, everything about this watch projects exceptional quality, making it an all-around winner.

I am delighted to see the brands nominated for GPHG under women's category. In a women's watch, design is like the heart of the watch. Each nominated piece has a distinct spectacular design which lends each brand an individual edge over competing brand. Two watches which take my breath away are Audemars Piguet Millenary and Piaget limelight Gala.
Audemars Piguet Millenary does total justice to the brand tag line "To break the rules you must first master them". Millenary watch breaks the rules of modern watch design and the unique oval shape in pink gold case features a diamond set bezel and lugs as well as glare proofed sapphire crystal caseback. With the exposed moment it reveals the strength of the women. This watch is a perfect marriage between Fashion and Horology.

  • Piaget - Pre-SIHH in Spain

    IW Magazine - 31 October 2011

Seville, Spain, was the site of the recent "pre-SIHH" introduction of Piaget's latest watches and jewelry, and the locations where they were first unveiled were perfectly fitting for each magnificent product. The Limelight Garden Party jewelry collection was displayed during the evening of October 18 at the Casa de Pilatos, whose sultry gardens perfumed the air as we perused the amazing array of earrings, necklaces, rings and ladies' watches.

At the heart of the jewelry collection is the Piaget rose, which was evident in every shape and form and stone configuration, in diamonds, white chalcedony, sapphire and gold. A gorgeous secret watch, again featuring a rose (in 18-karat white gold with 8.7 carats of brilliant-cut diamonds) was the piece de resistance for any female watch lover. The entire haute joaillerie collection may be described as "typically Piaget" in the very best sense: sophisticated and perfectly crafted.

The next evening, we were treated to a sneak peak of the Piaget Altiplano Skeleton Ultra-Thin model, which is just 5.34 mm thick. This time the Abadas Triana restaurant, perched on the edge of the Triana River, was the location of our festivities, which included a short presentation by Piaget CEO Philippe Leopold-Metzger. The watch features the new Piaget Caliber 1200S (2.40 mm thick), housed within a 38 mm 18-karat white gold case specifically designed and developed to accommodate it. Apparently it took more than three years of research and development to perfect the movement, which is derived from the Piaget 1200P. The Caliber 1200S has a number of innovations, and in addition to the micro-rotor in 950 platinum, the hour-wheel bridge has been slimmed down to a minimum wall thickness of just 0.11 mm. The movement is truly beautiful, with its many planes either matte finished or polished, rhodium plated or black. Piaget's attention to detail, in both its products and its role as host of this event, was truly inspiring: as we dined on lobster tail and Mediterranean hake, the Piaget logo was simultaneously projected in full view on the historic tower across the Triana.

  • Piaget - Previewing the Altiplano Skeleton

    WORLDTEMPUS - 27 October 2011

"I fully understand why other watch companies do not make super-slim watches," Piaget CEO Philippe Leopold-Metzger told Worldtempus from a sunny terrace in Seville, where Piaget showed its new Altiplano Skeleton.
The Altiplano is an impressive timepiece. This is not only due to the fact that it is already powered by the thinnest automatic movement available on the market with a slender height of 2.4 millimeters. The Altiplano is also the thinnest automatic watch with a case height of only 5.34 millimeters.

    True artisans
Leopold-Metzger's remark was a salute to the master craftsmen behind the watch who had to pretty much create the impossible: skeletonizing an already slim and - therefore - fragile movement: Caliber 1200S. Skeletonizing, also known as open-working, reveals only the most vital parts of the movement structure. In this case it was achieved without losing the well-known, luxurious look of a Piaget movement with its own decor and inner beauty.
"This is a task reserved for only a few of the world's most talented artisans," Leopold-Metzger claimed, indicating that Piaget employs some of the most talented hands in the Swiss watch business. "Mind you, at Piaget we do not ask external and independent watchmakers to design a movement for us. We do everything ourselves," Leopold-Metzger underlined the strength of the watch company that he has captained for the last 12 years.

    The choice of Steve Jobs?
We wanted to know from Leopold-Metzger why Piaget is so keen on being the master of the slim watch when some of its closest competitors are exploring new and exotic materials and multiple mechanical functions. "Piaget is an elegant company, offering elegant watches. But we are also very much movement makers, talking a lot about our calibers and how we put much effort into the aesthetics of our movements. Our super slim watches offer elegant simplicity, and I think that our Altiplano is a watch that Steve Jobs would have worn due to the extraordinary simplicity of the design." Jobs would probably not have protested against this remark, as Piaget's Altiplano indeed reflects elegance and simplicity paired with incredible technological features.
    Tough job
Even though the Piaget Altiplano may look simple, creating its super slim movement certainly is not, as some of its components are as thin as 0.12 millimeter. On top of that, the Altiplano Skeleton is elegantly finished: a blackened platinum rotor elegantly decorated with Piaget's coat of arms rotates against the backdrop of a movement featuring satin-brushed, hand-sawed and hand-beveled plates and bridges. This caliber has been painstakingly skeletonized, yet the time is still very visible due to the blackened dauphine hands that provide a much needed contrast to the satinized, sunray-polished movement.

    Masters of the ultra-thin
With this new open-worked model, it is hard to see how Piaget will be able to come up with another record-breaking Altiplano. The Skeleton version has been stripped down to its bare essentials, and it would take an even slimmer movement to move this new model out of the champion's circle: Piaget is indeed the "Master of Ultra-Thin Movements."
The Altiplano Skeleton has a case diameter of 38 millimeters and is only offered in 18-karat white gold. Suggested retail price is 50,000 Swiss francs.
