  • Patek Philippe - World Time Moon

A company anniversary should not only be a retrospective, it should also look ahead. This objective was fulfilled with the Patek Philippe World Time Moon. This commemorative timepiece combines two complications that stand for tradition and innovation as the entire center is now occupied by a large-format moon-phase display. To commemorate the manufacture's 175th anniversary, The World Time Moon will be crafted in a limited edition
of 1750 pieces, of which 450 as the diamond-adorned Ref. 7175 ladies' version and 1300 in the somewhat larger Ref. 5575 men's version.

Conventional moon-phase displays are based on a characteristically shaped dial aperture. It exposes part of a disk with two round stylized moons that rotates about its own axis once in the course of two lunar months. Accordingly, the changing face of the earth's satellite is comparatively small. To achieve a significantly larger and more attractive depiction, Patek Philippe developed a mechanism for the World Time Moon that showcases the moon-phase display in the center of the dial. It is composed of two extremely thin, superposed glass disks. The bottom one is decorated with the nocturnal sky using an innovative metallization process. It shows a richly detailed and very large rendering of the moon. This disk performs one complete revolution every 29.53 days. The upper half of the second stationary disk just above is metallized with a precisely
calculated, heart-shaped contour. This mask exposes only the visible portion of the moon on the rotating disk and covers the area that in reality is darkened by the earth's shadow.

The new caliber 240 HU LU was developed explicitly to achieve a fusion of the world's 24 time zones with the lunar cycle. It is based on an ultra-thin self-winding movement powered by a 22K gold minirotor totally recessed in the plate.

The World Time Moon is presented in a round case, inspired by the Calatrava style, is made of 18K white gold for men and 18K rose gold for women. Both models have a solid-gold case back with the engraving "PATEK PHILIPPE GENEVE 175e Anniversaire 1839 - 2014".On the dial side, Patek Philippe created an legible display of all 24 time zones with emphasis on local time, combined with an unusually large, richly detailed moon-phase display on dials with a diameter of about 35 mm. In contrast to the World Time watches in the current collection, the World Time Moon anniversary model features an innovative local time hour hand. It recalls the Southern Cross constellation and rounds out the astronomical triom earth, moon, and stars.
Another special facet of this limited anniversary edition: as a tribute to Patek Philippe's notable heritage, Central European Time is represented by the city of Geneva instead of Paris.

The men's model, with a diameter of 39.8 mm, is slightly larger than the 38-mm ladies' version. The latter features a bezel that sparkles with the fire of 70 brilliant-cut diamonds. The hand-stitched alligator strap with large square scales is secured with a fold-over clasp in gold to match the case, with the engraving "PATEK PHILIPPE 1839 - 2014". The strap is shiny black for the men's model and shiny beige for ladies.

  • Auction - Extraordinary Private Collection of Watches by Patek Philippe

Sotheby's New York auction of Important Watches will feature a groundbreaking group of five pieces commissioned in titanium. The collection is led by the Ref 5001T Sky Moon Tourbillon , a previously undocumented reference and the only known example of Patek Philippe's coveted Sky Moon Tourbillon in titanium (est. $1/1.5 million*), as well as the legendary 1923 Officier, the first split-seconds chronograph wristwatch produced by the firm (est. $800,000/1.2 million).

The collection includes additional references by Patek Philippe that have remained unknown to collectors, as well as unique pieces incorporating rare materials and designs beyond titanium. Together estimated at more than $3 million, the 12 wristwatches will travel to Geneva this May before returning to Sotheby's York Avenue galleries for exhibition beginning 6 June.

    Unknown Patek Philippe References
Patek Philippe's iconic Ref 5002 Sky Moon Tourbillon wristwatches - featuring a double dial inspired by the Henry Graves Supercomplication that sold at Sotheby's in 1999 for the longstanding auction record price of $11 million - have long been prized among collectors as a trophy timepiece.
The present collection is led by a commissioned example of the Sky Moon Tourbillon in titanium, which was assigned a unique reference number that has remained unknown to collectors and horological experts outside of the firm: the Ref 5001T Sky Moon Tourbillon, a Magnificent and Unique Titanium Double Dialed Wristwatch with Twelve Complications including Tourbillon, Perpetual Calendar, Retrograde Date, Sky Chart, Moon-Phases, Orbit Display, Sidereal Time and Minute Repeating on Cathedral Gongs made circa 2002 (est. $1/1.5 million).

While the Ref 5002 was produced in yellow gold, pink gold, white gold and platinum, there has been no public documentation until now of a Sky Moon Tourbillon in titanium. The watch is distinguished further by its basket weave motif, repeated on the bezel and the dial where the standard Sky Moon Tourbillon normally features the firm's signature Calatrava crosses, as well as unabbreviated cardinal points on the star chart.

Similarly, the Ref 5104 Minute Repeater is a celebrated model for Patek Philippe, but the present collection offers a special order version that was assigned a unique reference number that also has remained undocumented to the public until now: the Ref 5103P, an Extremely Fine and Unique Platinum Automatic Minute Repeating Semi-Skeletonized Perpetual Calendar Wristwatch with Retrograde Date, Moon Phases and Leap Year Indication made in 2004 (est. $500/700,000). While the Ref 5104 was produced mainly in a combination of pink gold and platinum, the present all-platinum Ref 5103P is distinguished further by the bespoke engraving on its movement plates - not found on any other known example - as well as a unique teardrop pattern on its side.

    A vintage icon
The one vintage wristwatch on offer from the collection happens to be one of the most important wristwatches produced by Patek Philippe: the storied 1923 Officier, an Extremely Rare and Important Yellow Gold Single Button Split-Seconds Chronograph Wristwatch with Enamel Dial originally sold on 13 October 1923 (est. $800,000/1.2 million). The earliest split-seconds chronograph produced by the firm, this watch redefined scholarship on Patek Philippe when it last sold at auction in 1999 - setting an auction record for any wristwatch at the time - by proving that the firm had created a split-seconds chronograph years before what had been known. This unique wristwatch is distinguished further as the only split-seconds chronograph by Patek Philippe to feature a white enamel dial.

    Unique titanium commissions
Titanium application in the wristwatch is rare and almost unheard of in the production of Patek Philippe - until now, there were only four known watches in titanium by the firm. Each of the five titanium pieces emerging from the present collection pre-dates those examples.
In addition to the Ref 5001T, highlights of the previously unknown titanium wristwatches by Patek Philippe include: the Ref 5033T, an Important and Unique Titanium Automatic Annual Calendar Minute Repeating Wristwatch made in 2003 (right, est. $400/600,000), and the Ref 5102T Celestial, an Important and Unique Titanium Automatic Astronomical Wristwatch with Sky Chart, Phases and Position of the Moon and Time of Meridian Passage of Sirius and the Moon, made in 2003 (est. $200/300,000). No example of either reference has been recorded publicly in this metal.

  • Patek Philippe - Confirming an enduring and universal appeal

While some may say that Patek Philippe is simply confirming the trend seen at the SIHH 2013, one should in fact look back to 2010-2011 in order to render to Caesar that which belongs to Caesar. Patek Philippe was the first Fine Watchmaking brand to devote itself so fully to complications for women. While there are indeed a number of white or gemset tourbillons, or chronographs with undeniably feminine touches, at Patek Philippe this approach reflects a deeply ingrained determination that is confirmed with each new collection launch. Witness the models introduced at Baselworld 2013, most of which are mechanical.

    For women
After the split-second or minute repeater models clothed in diamonds and daintily sized, the 7134 travel time model comes in a gemset white gold case framing a taupe-coloured dial. In the same spirit, the worldtimer 7130 reference comes in a new pink gold and diamond-set livery. These are not new models as such, but rather range extensions. But the very fact that these models with pragmatic complications are being interpreted in new colours offers further proof of their success and of Patek Philippe's determination. In parallel, several lighter models are being introduced and the distinctive Nautilus 7018 model welcomes new dials: instead of the grooved motif inherited from the masculine versions, they now feature a wave pattern adorning the mother-of-pearl base.

    For collectors
Nor are men neglected, far from it. The flagship model of any given year is generally displayed in a prime position on the brand booth and introduced in detail at press presentations. For 2013, the watch in question is the Gondolo reference 5200. Derived from the 5100 launched in 2000, it picks up the same aesthetic principle - a vertical rectangle with a cambered profile and gadroons - as well as the comfortable 8-day power reserve. The latter appears at 12 o'clock on a choice of blue or silver-toned dial, with the day and date shown just below on their respective disc and pointer-type displays. Patek generally indicates the date only on such models, or else moves on directly to annual or perpetual calendar type versions, so the day-date combination is a surprise in this case, and one that implies a number of technical innovations.

    For posterity
In purely aesthetic terms, Patek Philippe is generally known for its extremely sober, understated designs. Reference 5227 is no exception to this rule. This watch offered in yellow, pink or white gold versions is a high-end addition to the Calatrava range and the largest in this line at 39 mm. Another attractive characteristic lies in the lighter, hollowed case sides that were also featured in the Grande Complication reference 5207. The caseback appears to be solid, but is in fact based on the officer-type principle involving a cover that opens to reveal the self-winding 324 SC movement. Its 3.3 mm thickness enables the 5227 to stay slim, sober… and resolutely Patek.
