  • IWC - Dubai International Film Festival

IWC Schaffhausen marked another successful presence at the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) 2015, which opened on 9 December and runs until 16 December. As 'Supported by' sponsor and Official 'Festival-Time' Partner, IWC Schaffhausen hosted the fourth IWC Filmmaker Award.

For the fourth consecutive year, IWC Schaffhausen collaborated with the DIFF to grant one talented filmmaker from the region the esteemed award. This year, three filmmakers were shortlisted for the award: Qatari director Khalifa Al Muraikhi for his project "Sahaab", Saudi director Shahad Ameen for her feature "Scales" and Emirati director Layla Kaylif for "The Letter Writer". Layla Kaylif was selected as the winner by the revered jury, and was presented with the USD 100,000 prize. Layla Kaylif also received an IWC timepiece.

The event's master of ceremonies was IWC brand ambassador and television personality Raya Abirached. The Swiss luxury watch manufacturer also welcomed international VIP guests and celebrities, including notable IWC brand ambassador Dev Patel, who attended the "For the Love of Cinema" gala dinner hosted by IWC and the DIFF.

  • IWC - Pilot's Watch, 80 years of success

At the end of August 2015, IWC unveiled its new Big Pilot's Watch Edition "Patrouille Suisse", which we presented a few days ago. This is the second aviator watch that the Schaffhausen-based manufacturer has dedicated to the Swiss aerobatics squadron, right in the slipstream of the Pilot's Watch Chronograph Edition "Patrouille Suisse" released in 2011.

Pilot's Watch is the name of an IWC collection that dates back to interwar period, when pilots took pocket watches with them on their flights and only a lucky few could afford purpose-built wristwatches. IWC did aviators a great service in the 1930s by producing its "Special Pilot's Watch" that met their specific needs relating to flight conditions of the time, when they were often perched in a dark and unsteady cockpit. It featured an extremely legible dial with oversized and luminescent hands and numerals, a large winding crown that could be easily handled even with gloves, a rotating bezel with arrowhead index for keeping track of short times, a shock-protected balance-wheel bearing and a nonmagnetic escapement. The IWC Pilot's Watch collection was born.

    RAF, Spitfire, Top Gun and…
In 1940, IWC introduced the Big Pilot's Watch 52 T.S.C., boasting a standout 55 mm diameter that remains a record for IWC. It innovated with its central hacking seconds device enabling pilots to synchronise their watches with to-the-second precision, along with an extra-long leather strap that meant it could be worn easily over the sleeve of a flight suit.

From 1949 onwards and for more than 30 years, Royal Air Force navigators and subsequently pilots flew with the famous Mark XI on their wrist. This relatively small 36 model was developed to the specifications of the RAF, which wanted a watch able to resist changes of pressure, variations in temperature and magnetic fields. Several other models were to follow as of 1993 with the Mark XII, the most recent example being the Mark XVII presented in 2012 and featuring a pure, classic dial that has earned it many admirers.
The chronograph function found its place in the collection in 1988 with the Pilot's Watch Chronograph. 2002 saw the birth of the new Big Pilot's Watch, inspired by the 1940s model, yet with a smaller 46 mm diameter, seven-day power reserve and Pellaton automatic winding

The Spitfire versions were introduced in 2003 and successively reinterpreted over the years in chronograph, double-chronograph or digital date and month perpetual calendar versions, including models equipped with in-house movements. Other timepieces bearing the legendary Top Gun name appeared in 2007 with the launch of a first chronograph. 2012 witnessed the big comeback of the Top Gun fleet with several new models, including a Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar, the ultimate in terms of horological complications suited to fighter pilots, and endowed with a powerful aesthetic built around its titanium and ceramic case.

    the Little Prince
While IWC is clearly passionate about the modern brand of high-performance aviation embodied by fighter plane squadrons with high-profile names, it also leverages the aeronautical field for humanitarian purposes, inspired by the iconic figure of Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Partnering the Succession Antoine de Saint-Exupery - d'Agay society, IWC contributed to the creation of the Espace IWC-Saint-Exupery in the Musee de l'Air et de l'Espace in Le Bourget, near Paris. Since 2006, in its capacity as patron of the Fondation Saint-Exupery pour la Jeunesse, it has launched several commemorative series dedicated to the great writer and aviator. Each of them includes a one-of-a-kind platinum model auctioned on behalf of the Foundation.

The latest of these special series is the Pilot's Watch Double Chronograph Edition "Le Petit Prince", a successful blend of technology and poetry in which the typical pilot's watch functions and characteristics - such as stop-hours, minutes and seconds devices, split-seconds to record intermediate times, a soft-iron inner case for antimagnetic protection and a sapphire crystal secured against drops in pressure - surround a jumping star weekday display appearing inside the faint line of its central circle.

A decidedly masculine timepiece (equivalent models for women being pretty thin on the ground!), the pilot's watch conveys the virile values of aviation pioneers and fighter pilots. Courage and heroism are still admired today, as confirmed by men's ongoing enthusiasm for IWC Pilot's Watches.

  • IWC - New Prominent Friends of the Brand

The partnership between IWC and Mercedes-Benz' performance brand AMG started in 2004, as a venture between two companies with a long and successful history in precision engineering and a shared commitment to pushing back the boundaries of mechanics and high technology. IWC's appointment as Official Engineering Partner to the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team earlier this year was confirmation of the close ties between the two companies. Now, in a move that will further cement the partnership between the luxury watch manufacturer and the racing team, the two drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg have become Friends of the Brand. They are first racing drivers in a select group of world-famous celebrities.
    The Quest for Perfection
Commenting on the appointment of the brand's two newest ambassadors Georges Kern, CEO of IWC, said with pride: "Lewis and Nico are two amazing personalities who work every day at getting that little bit more performance out of themselves and their cars. In their own inimitable way, the two of them represent all that is best about IWC Schaffhausen. I am deeply moved that I am now able to call them Friends of the Brand."
Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are relentless in their quest for perfection - a quality they share with IWC's designers, technicians and master watchmakers. Lewis Hamilton is a declared aficionado of fine watchmaking and clearly recognizes the similarities between his profession and the watches made by IWC Schaffhausen: "I love wristwatches, and it seems to me that those made by IWC have a lot in common with Formula One™ drivers: they're unique, high-performance watches and are among the best in their field. Needless to say, I'm really looking forward to our partnership with the company."

Nico Rosberg's ties with the watch manufacturer from Schaffhausen started when his father gave him an IWC years ago. "From that moment on I was hooked, especially on watches by IWC: the designs are simply unique. But it isn't just the outside: the cases are packed with state-of-the-art technology and high performance. Becoming a Friend of the Brand is like being reunited with an old acquaintance. My first watch was an IWC, a gift from my father."
    Championship Performance
As drivers in the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are in the spotlight 20 times a year. Behind the scenes is the painstaking work carried out by the team's engineers and technicians, who work to ensure that everything on race day runs with the precision and predictability of a watch movement.
As Georges Kern points out: "There's a sense of pride in the craftsmanship, the innovation and the pioneering spirit that goes into everything we turn our hands to. And the proof of our success is in the reception our products receive on a global platform. Like MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, the force that drives us constantly is the will to be world champions at what we do."

  • IWC - On Sardinia with the Mannschaft

The IWC Schaffhausen ensured a good atmosphere once again in the team in the training camp of the German national football team on Sardinia before the European Championships 2012 in Poland and Ukraine. A watchmaking course enthused the footballers in Geneva before the world championships 2006. This time, focus was on a folding kayak contest made possible by the IWC within the scope of the PR partnership between IWC Schaffhausen and the German Football Association (DFB). Initially, the national players assembled the folding kayaks. They had an exciting race afterwards off the Sardinian coast. The Big Aviator Watch Edition DFB of the Swiss watch manufacturer was the reason for pleasant anticipation among the national team. It is already the third time that IWC Schaffhausen manufactures the "OFFICIAL WATCH OF THE GERMAN FOOTBALL NATIONAL TEAM.

It was a great afternoon at the beach near Porto Cervo on Sardinia when the German national team gathered together for the IWC Team Challenge. The wives and children of the players as well as the coaches of the DFB team were the spectators. Oliver Bierhoff, National Team Manager, talked about an interesting experience: "It has been a physically active afternoon which was a lot of fun and will remain in the best memories of everybody."
Under the guidance of the specialists of Klepper, the leading manufacturer of folding kayaks from Rosenheim, Germany with more than hundred years of tradition, the national players started highlymotivated and highly-concentrated. According to the motto "assemble and depart", a kayak was built in just under 20 minutes suitable for almost any waters. It is stable, unsinkable and non-tilting - and easy to paddle. The environmentally-friendly folding kayak by Klepper is primarily composed of natural materials such as wood, cotton and rubber.

The national players proved with the boat that they are not only familiar with the handling of a football in any situation, but they can also glide over the water when the waves are right. "Our team also proves at other sports activities that they are able to meet interesting challenges in an impressive manner" commented Joachim Loew, Team Coach of the National Team, with a laugh afterwards.
Henrik Ekdahl, Managing Director of IWC Northern Europe, wished the German national team within the scope of the event a good preparation time and great success at the European Championships: "It is a tradition since 2006 that IWC makes it possible that the German national football team can participate in activities within the scope of the World Championships and European Championships training camps which exceed a pure athletic preparation and provide the players with special experiences and new insights."

After a watchmaking course in Geneva 2006 which provided the team with insights into the world of mechanical watches, they had the opportunity on Majorca in 2008 to experience the fascination of flying on a sightseeing flight with a more than 60 years old Ju 52. Now, the national players faced the challenge at the training camp on Sardinia to assemble a folding kayak by Klepper in teams of three and to prove on the ocean afterwards that one can cover a challenging route as quickly as possible with team spirit, discipline, endurance and physical fitness.

  • IWC - The Horological Wingman

    WORLDTEMPUS - 24 January 2012

"We are a masculine watch brand," Robert Pennartz, newly appointed director of Benelux and Scandinavia, stated over a quick lunch inside the Palexpo premises that houses the annual SIHH watch show. A statement like that should not raise any eyebrows when you consider the popular Swiss watch brand's lineup this year. Masculine indeed, manly even.
The IWC collection is built around its pillars and every year one of the pillars is presented with new, updated models. This is the year of the Pilot's collection and this is what we saw when we visited the inside of IWC's booth: a life-size fighter plane leaving no doubts about this year's theme greeting you.

The 2012 Pilot's collection offers not only perpetual calendars with digital indication and a smart rotor shaped like an airplane, it also boasts more ceramic timepieces than ever before at IWC. Two of these even sport an "instant vintage" dial layout with pre-tinted SuperLumiNova, which seems to be the plat du jour of quite a few watch companies these days. This forced vintage look is perhaps wearing a bit thin already, but admittedly it is quite fitting on the new IWC Top Gun Miramar mode.
    The Miramars
This model line is named for the Californian training grounds where the legendary Top Gun jetfighters were originally educated between 1969 and 1996 before the grounds were relocated to Fallon, Nevada. The 48 mm Big Pilot Top Gun Miramar (€ 16,100) and the pilot's chronograph Top Gun Miramar, only slightly smaller with a generous diameter of 46 millimeters (€ 11,200), offer new looks never seen before at IWC. Beside the pre-tinted look, these models are also equipped with a green textile strap that looks and feels like the material used for a jetfighter's overall.

Interestingly enough, the latter is now powered by an in-house chronograph movement, Caliber 89365, which offers a flyback function as well as a power reserve of 68 hours.
These are undoubtedly two very appealing timepieces for the man who likes to wear a large, masculine watch without being weighed down by a stainless steel case. The black light-weight ceramic offers better wearability and the soft textile strap adds to the comfort.
    Steel wingman
If black ceramic and pre-tinted hands and hour markers are not your thing, don't worry. IWC also introduced other handsome wingmen such as the 45-millimeter Pilot's Watch Worldtimer crafted in stainless steel, which is apparently an editorial favorite at Worldtempus. In fact, this model rocks so much, we have to ask what took them so long to bring it out?
Of course a pilot's watch should be fitted with a world time function and this model is destined to be an instant classic. It will be interesting to see how this worldtimer retailing for € 8,550 will be received by the public, but it certainly deserves an all round degree of success. And who knows…perhaps IWC will even pamper frequent flyers with a future pink gold or titanium version of this Pilot's Watch Worldtimer.

  • IWC - Portofino Chronograph

Does a chronograph have a place in a watch family widely regarded as the soul of discretion? Certainly, as long as the elements designed for recording cumulative time are as smoothly integrated as those within the Portofino Chronograph. The combination of elegance with dynamism is reminiscent of a 1960s sports car or the timeless style of a sleek Italian speedboat that, to this day, has lost none of its attraction.
Simply being able to stop time: it's something most of us would like to do occasionally, including the fans of the Portofino watch family. It was for these fans and all other devotees of elegant sports watches that IWC Schaffhausen launched the Portofino Chronograph in 2007. But, unlike a car with ultra-wide tyres and big spoilers, it makes no exhibition of its sporting ambitions. If anything, it has the same exciting, but somehow understated, dynamism of an Italian sports car from the 1960s. The displays and stopwatch controls are so elegantly integrated that they underscore the classical shape and design of the Portofino Chronograph. In 2011, the design of the Portofino Chronograph will be even more finely balanced, its lines more discreet than ever before. The diameter has been increased minimally by one millimetre to 42, while the slightly more rounded contours of the case and gently flowing strap horns are distinctly pleasing on the eye. They are complemented by slim chronograph push-buttons with eye-catching heads of the type you might find in the cockpit of an Italian sports car.
Although equally restrained, the chronograph dial is perfectly functional too. The cumulative stopwatch displays are aligned vertically, with the 30-minute counter at "12 o'clock" and the 12-hour counter at "6". IWC's designers permitted themselves one tiny optical extravagance and made the figure 30 in the minute counter, and the 12 in the hour counter, stand out in red. By contrast, the small seconds at "9 o'clock" is decidedly low key and elegantly counterbalances the day and date displays on the opposite side of the dial.
The colour of the displays matches the colour of the dial in question. The buyer has a choice of a silver-plated or black dial. The appliqued Roman numerals and indices look almost as if one could reach out and touch them, thanks also to the sapphire glass, which has an antireflective coating on both sides. The Portofino Chronograph is powered by the tried-and-tested 79320 calibre with a 44-hour power reserve and automatic winding with a ball-bearing rotor.
Apart from the classical alligator leather straps, the Portofino Chronograph is also available with a cool but snug-fitting Milanese mesh bracelet, which underscores the watch's elegant character. The new bracelets can be ordered in three different lengths and adjusted in five-millimetre increments to ensure a perfect fit on any wrist.

  • IWC - Portuguese Roots

    WORLDTEMPUS - 29 September 2010

At the SIHH this past January, it became clear that IWC had declared 2010 its "year of the Portuguese." This watch line, iconic as it is, has a name that most enthusiasts have a hard time divining where it might originate. The company itself, situated in German-speaking Schaffhausen, calls the line the "Portugieser," which means "Portuguese" in German.

The unusual name actually originates in the fact that two Portuguese merchants approached IWC in 1938 in search of a timepiece to be worn on the wrist that could function as accurately as a marine chronometer. This was done since many of their clients had marine-associated professions. Before the era of electronic GPS, the marine chronometer was the sole instrument available to aid sailors in navigation determining both longitude and latitude, therefore allowing them to precisely determine position at sea.
IWC's identity often rests in the association with pilot's watches, typified by the iconic Mark line, the Doppelchronograph, and diverse pilot's watches the company made for various national forces. This marine association is one that tends to remain in the background as the origins of the very classically styled Portuguese family. The first models were manufactured in 1939 in very limited editions for the Portuguese market powered by a 38.5 mm pocket watch caliber. After the end of the war, these 41 mm timepieces also attained cult status in Germany.

The Portuguese's classical styling has a raison d'être: marine chronometers, observation watches, deck watches, and B-watches—which serve as the Portuguese's inspiration—all have one big element in common: they are exceedingly legible so as to clearly be able to see the minutes and seconds at a glance. Additionally, they must be exceedingly accurate in order to avoid danger of misnavigation.
In addition, and quite coincidentally, Portugal was historically home to the world's greatest explorers and navigators: Vasco da Gama, Magellan, and Henry the Navigator proudly served their explorative country. Explorers of other nationalities such as Christopher Columbus were often also in the employ of the Portuguese government. These incredible historical figures used neither GPS nor marine chronometers to find their paths—this instrument did not come into regular use until John Harrison's H4 won England's Longitude Act contest for the most precise timepiece in the late 1700s—but rather traditional techniques such as dead reckoning, coastal navigation, and celestial navigation, whose instruments include the sextant, charts, and a lot of luck and common sense.

In honor of this history and to celebrate the Portuguese of today and yesterday, with the help of ambassador and legendary footballer Luis Figo IWC last week introduced a red gold limited edition model of fifty pieces: the Portuguese Automatic Tribute to Portugal. It is powered by a manufacture IWC movement that includes Pellaton automatic winding and a long-lasting seven-day power reserve.
