Watches News

  • Newsletter - Fifty-five reasons to celebrate

On the digital cover of WorldTempus today you will find the new LV Fifty Five from Louis Vuitton. Aside from its clever play on words in the name (LV being of course 55 in Roman Numerals, signalling a switch from Roman to Arabic numerals) this new model is significant because it has been conceived from scratch and introduces an entirely new case design to the Louis Vuitton timepiece collection.

Our round tables on the finalists in the individual categories for this year's GPHG continue this week with a look at the tourbillons. To coincide with our analysis, David Chokron also provides a handy reminder of what a tourbillon actually is. Apart from the GPHG 2015, the other main event of the autumn is the Only Watch charity auction, for which all the watches will officially be presented at the Monaco Yacht Show, which opens this week. Camille Gendre will be taking a day-return to the Principality to report from the event.

As you read these lines, H. Moser & Cie. is gearing up for a unique event. As a partner of the first parabolic flight from Switzerland, the brand will be testing a variety of components in the brief period of weightlessness experienced during such flights. Our editor-in-chief will be travelling to the airfield in Dubendorf, near Zurich, to find out more. Hamilton will also be carrying out similar tests on some ETA movements next month, as zero gravity strangely becomes a new testing ground for watches that are unlikely ever to experience it.
As all good things must come to an end, our series of daily summer competitions, which started in mid-June, will finish this week. We would like to thank the thousands of people who took part in them and took the time to contact us with their thanks, queries and minor niggles. The operation has been a huge success and has also helped us to improve the site. Don't forget that you can still win one of 10 SwissKubik StartBox watch winders in our regular monthly competition.

  • Hamilton - Khaki Field Auto

The Khaki Field watch, rugged in construction yet elegant in design, is associated with adventure and is direct descendants of its heroic forerunners that served the Forces in both world wars.

The Khaki Field Auto applies the proven codes of the Khaki Field series. Military-inspired colors and textures unite with innovation in the form of the exclusive H-10 movement. This caliber displays the hours, minutes and seconds through hands nickeled with white Superluminova® and has 80 hours of power reserve to meet the toughest performance expectations. The 40mm stainless steel case is topped with a sapphire crystal and opens on a green dial.
A choice of two bracelets - camouflage canvas or stainless steel - is available.

  • IWC - Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton present their own watches

Apart from their professional interest in Fomula One, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg also share a passion for mechanical watches. As brand ambassadors of IWC Schaffhausen, they had a hand in the design of their own watches, and, prior to the first practice sessions on the track, appeared for their presentation at an IWC event in Singapore.
The results are impressive: the Ingenieur Chronograph Edition "Lewis Hamilton" (Ref. IW379602) has a distinctly technical appeal, while the Ingenieur Chronograph Edition "Nico Rosberg" (Ref. IW379603) is both lighter and sportier in appearance.

The main aims of the collaboration between IWC and the two drivers were to equip both teammates with a personalized and characteristic watch and to adapt the concept of "performance engineering" to the successful Silver Arrow drivers.

The fact that the watch chosen was a chronograph from the Ingenieur family was no coincidence. First, the chronograph is the epitome of sports timing; and, second, the Ingenieur collection pays tribute to the global partnership between IWC and Mercedes AMG Petronas with materials typically used in motorsport, such as titanium, carbon fibre and ceramic. For both Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, the only conceivable material for the case was titanium.
The rugged timepieces have been equipped with one of the most efficient movements manufactured entirely by IWC, the 89361 calibre, equipped with IWC double-pawl winding system.

The upper totalizer displays clocked hours and minutes as clearly as the time of day. Stopped times up to one minute are measured by the central seconds hand. Another very practical feature for anyone who frequents the world's racing circuits is the flyback function for measuring pit-stop times.
Both of the special editions, which are each limited to 250 watches, have a special feature on the reverse side: inset into the titanium case back is a medallion of carbon fibre, which may well show signs of wear and tear.
A certificate supplied with each watch confirms that the material originally comes from one of the Silver Arrow cars used by Mercedes AMG Petronas.
The back of the watch is sealed with a water-resistant sapphire glass that bears the personal logo of Nico Rosberg or Lewis Hamilton on the inner surface.

    Lewis Hamilton's timepiece
"I wanted to have a watch that featured a lot of technology," says Lewis Hamilton. The racing driver prefers metal bracelets and chose rugged, skin-friendly titanium for the Ingenieur Chronograph Edition "Lewis Hamilton". In doing so, the technophile Mercedes driver also created the only watch in the entire IWC collection with a titanium bracelet.

    Nico Rosberg's timepiece
"For me, IWC watches epitomize not only complex technology and unmatched performance but also passion and emotions," is how Nico Rosberg sums up his impressions. "These were also the elements that I wanted my watch to embody. I was certain that the combination of my favourite material, titanium, with the black strap and the bright dial would create a striking contrast." The yellow colour of the seconds hand and of the hands in the totalizer at "12 o'clock" recalls the neon yellow helmet that was Nico Rosberg's trademark for 7 years. The watch features a rubber strap, which has an added touch of luxury with its embossed calfskin inlay and grey quilted stitching.

Renewal of partnership with Mercedes AMG Petronas
IWC Schaffhausen also announces the renewal of its current partnership with the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team for a further 3 years.

  • Hamilton - Flintridge

The original watch featured a protective cover and was the exclusive property of sportsmen destined for the great, dusty and damp outdoors. Today's wearers safeguard their own time with an intricately decorated folding flap ensuring the dial is for their eyes only.

    Hamilton Flintridge Gent

At first glance the closed Flintridge Gent reminds of an intricate 1930s radio microphone. The cover hosts a Clous de Paris pattern, interrupted only by two peepholes for the day and date, plus an embossed logo. Raising the "lid" reveals a silver-colored dial, also with a stamped Clous de Paris centerpiece, and dauphine-shaped, polished hands.

The H-40 movement, with 80 hours of power reserve, is visible through the case back. Giving today's Flintridge an unmistakably modern air is the layered architecture of the case with the distinctive finishes of its various surfaces. Its soave signature is a grey leather strap.

Only 999 watches will be available.

    Hamilton Flintridge Lady

The secret of the 2014 Flintridge Lady is pure feminine charm. A polished cover appears to emit sunrays from a round opening just above the 6 o'clock position. Shining through this opening is a cluster of seven diamonds, a tempting invitation to raise the protective covering.

The silver-colored dial, with finely shaped hands and applied indexes, along with the case's smooth surfaces, bring more elegant touches combined with an astute eye for detail.

The watch is worn on a burgundy strap. Only 999 ladies will own one of these limited edition watches.

  • Hamilton - Pan Europ

Today's Pan Europ watches continue the series' tradition of showcasing technological advancements - the original Hamilton Pan Europ, introduced in 1971, contained one of the world's first automatic chronograph movements: they are powered by a brand new, high-performance automatic movement. The H-30, with its 80 hours of typical power reserve, is rooted in sporty design that is both chic and dynamic.

Modern materials and color schemes translate the Pan Europ heritage into an eye-catching contemporary timepiece. The circular dial flows into angular lugs to frame a turning bezel with an aluminum ring. Color is king and supports timekeeping and styling. White reflector on the dial and hands with Superluminova literally make the hours and minutes leap out. Fiery red takes control of the markings from 12 to 3 o'clock and of the fine second hand. It also makes an appearance in stripe form on the textile straps and to cover the surface of the round cut-outs in the black leather ones. The days and dates are displayed at 3 o'clock mark.

  • Hamilton - Jazzmaster Viewmatic Skeleton Gents

The Jazzmaster Viewmatic Skeleton Gents features a contemporary decoration, ranging from brushed, skeletonized rotors to an intricate 'H'-pattern on individual elements. The generously dimensioned openings displaycomponents such as the escapement, hairspring and barrel at work.
The traditional watchmaking technique of skeletonizing meets its match with high-tech laser-engraving.

Visible on both sides of the timepiece are the watchmaking techniques employed to create the H-20-S "engine" of the watch. Angles and curves join forces to make the dramatic, anthracite-colored cut-outs occupying the majority of the dial and even offering stolen glimpses of the wrist below. Multi-level rings displaying detailed markings from 0 to 60 and the branding frame the dial. Contrasting with the artistic statements of the skeletonizing are applied Super-LumiNova® indices for further technical punctuation.
Two bracelets are available: a five-row stainless steel bracelet or a black leather strap.

  • Filmmaking - Action!

    Urwerk & Jackie Chan
The star of martial arts comedies, Jackie Chan, found himself instantly drawn to Felix Baumgartner's muscular creations at a private presentation in Paris (photo) and quite naturally asked to wear them on-screen. Launched in China although not yet in Europe, Chinese Zodiac shows three very unexpected UR-202s worn by Jackie Chan and his team. This is a great piece of exposure for Urwerk, and all the more so because the hilarious actor even manages to take photographs with his timepiece !
    Hamilton & Bruce Willis
You don't change a winning team. In the Die Hard saga, Bruce Willis once again wears a Hamilton but has picked a new model. After Die Hard, Back to Hell, the toughest guy of successful action films shows up in Die Hard, a Beautiful Day to Die with a Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic on his wrist (a classic style that is surprising for Bruce Willis who may have a double personality?) In the film, his charming and muscular son, Jai Courtney, wears a watch that is better suited to elevated testosterone levels - a Hamilton Khaki X-Patrol. Hamilton has adopted a habit of partnering with science fiction movies, such as the very futuristic 2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick, or more recently I am Legend and the very popular trilogy Men in Black.

  • TAG Heuer - Hamilton Wins the Belgium Grand Prix

Lewis won an epic Spa race in which the predicted rain wreaked havoc with many of the World Championship contenders.
Hamilton led from the start as polesitter Mark Webber failed to get away from pole position with any speed. However it was a combination of rain and team-mate Sebastian Vettel who threw the race into chaos.

Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso were both the innocent victims of other people's accidents in the damp conditions, while Vettel was involved in three separate stewards investigations, including eliminating Button.

Webber recovered from dropping to P7 at La Source hairpin on Lap 1 to take second position ahead of Robert Kubica, Felipe Massa and Adrian Sutil. Alonso lost control of his Ferrari and crashed on Lap 38, while Vettel finished the race a lap down and out of the points.

    Congratulations to the McLaren team!

  • Hamilton - Khaki X-Mach, The sonic factor

The Khaki X-Mach takes Hamilton aviation watches to exhilarating new heights with its facility to measure the Mach number of an aircraft, the speed it is moving through the air divided by the speed of sound under the same atmospheric conditions. This sophisticated chronograph timepiece expresses the inspiration of the skies through relentless attention to detail and bold looks reminiscent of the cockpit. The Khaki X-Mach assures happy landings for its stylish wearer, with a combination of soave elegance and mechanical fascination.

    Mechanics in motion
Pilots simply set the pressure altitude (PA) and calibrated air speed (CAS) measured by the instrument in the cockpit by turning the left crown of the watch to reveal the Mach number in ISA (International Standard Atmosphere) conditions on the bezel. This transforms the timepiece into a stunning portable Machmeter. For wearers with their feet firmly on the ground, the Hamilton Khaki X-Mach watches increase the exhilaration factor with dynamic, sporty design. Aviation-inspired style elements include wing-shaped metal and carbon-fiber surrounds to protect the crowns, as well as nostalgic flying-jacket style stitching and studs on the bracelet. Tiny red touches, for instance at the tip of one of the counter hands, remind of high-precision cockpit instruments. A compass-style arrowhead on the back case symbolizes speed and signs off the ultimate aviator's style statement.
    Flying colors
All of the variations of the Hamilton Khaki X-Mach have a smooth black dial with easy to read silver-colored indices and matching counter frames. There is a choice of a black or silver-colored case with fine white or black numerical markings around the bezel to give it the look of an altimeter. The date display is at 3 o'clock and framed with a shape resembling the wedge put underneath a plane's wheels when it is stationary on the tarmac. Its surface is finely decorated with an elegant 'Clous de Paris' guilloche pattern. For the bracelet, wearers can either select brown leather to coordinate with the flying jackets, headgear and gloves of yesteryear, or contemporary black leather or rubber attachments. In all of its interpretations, the Khaki X-Mach is ready for take-off, on airport and fashion runways.
Hamilton was founded in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA. Hamilton watches combine the American spirit with the unrivalled precision of the latest Swiss movements and technologies. Known for its innovative design, Hamilton has a b foothold in Hollywood, with products appearing in over 350 films. The brand also boasts a b aeronautical heritage. Hamilton is a member of the Swatch group, the largest watch manufacturer and distributor in the world with 160 production sites in Switzerland.

  • TAG Heuer - Sharapova, DiCaprio, Wood and Hamilton

    La Revue FH - 30 April 2009 - No 8
In a time of economic challenge, TAG Heuer is extending its bold vision of the avant-garde with a brand new, emotionally charged ad campaign that challenges the very rules of endorsement marketing.
The famous challenge of TAG Heuer, «What are you made of?», is the common thread linking the past campaign to this daring new one. Now, however, the confrontational claim expresses the unique drive and passion of these super-achieving Knights of Time.
The visually stunning campaign coincides with the signing of new TAG Heuer ambassador Leonardo DiCaprio, who is partnering with the brand to support two of the world's most important environmental charities: the Natural Resources Defense Council and Green Cross International. The Hollywood superstar and committed environmental activist will appear in the new campaign endorsements of TAG Heuer's new ultra-masculine Aquaracer 500. Other visuals will feature world number one golfer Tiger Woods for Link, 2008 F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton for TAG Heuer's bestselling Carrera line and tennis superstar Maria Sharapova for women's expression of Aquaracer and Link.
The sophisticated visuals were shot by master photographer Tom Munro, whose glamorous photos regularly appear on the covers of Italian Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. Produced by CLM BBDO, the campaign will be launched worldwide in May.
«TAG Heuer's 2009 ad campaign is an inspirational tale of personal achievement, » said Jean-Christophe Babin, TAG Heuer President and CEO. «It tells the story of extraordinary individuals who transcend obstacles to realize dreams and attain the unreachable - and then keep going, setting their sights even higher, on horizons not yet dreamed of. These incredible men and woman are champions who never stop thinking of themselves as challengers. This is why, in their stunning portraits by Tom Munro, they don't wear the watches on their wrists but brandish them in their fists - as public declaration of their determination. The timepieces aren't accessories, they are talismans - lucky charms accompanying heroes on a perennial quest to be better, ber, faster.»
