LOVE this Glashutte Original watch!!! A lot of stuff is pretty and fun but not always my style. I don''t wear much orange. My coloring is goes toward the winter colors. August 24, 2015 saw 26 new apprentices begin their training at Glashutte Original. At the company's own „Alfred Helwig " School of Watchmaking, twenty-two young people will learn the craft of watchmaking, and four will be trained as toolmakers. With the new arrivals the Saxon manufactory currently has 80 apprentices in training, which makes it the largest of the training institutes based in Glashutte. This is one of the ways in which Glashutte Original is preparing to meet growing demand for its exclusive timepieces.

The future watchmakers are about to begin an intensive three-year period of training; the apprentice toolmakers can expect to study for three and a half years. Along with their training at the watchmaking school, during their studies the students gain practical experience in selected production and assembly areas of the manufactory. The goal is to have the students become familiar with watchmaking traditions and gain hands-on experience with modern craft techniques and procedures as well.

Great value is also placed on education at an international level, which is further underscored by a cooperative agreement between the "Alfred Helwig" School of Watchmaking and the Swiss training program "WOSTEP" (Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and Educational Program). This partnership allows apprentices who pass the WOSTEP final exam to receive, in addition to their German skilled worker certificate, the WOSTEP Diploma.

The "Alfred Helwig" School of Watchmaking will be hosting an "open house" day on October 17, 2015: all interested persons are welcome. Additional opportunities to learn more about the watchmaking school include the 22nd Education Action Day at the International Chamber of Commerce Dresden on 26 September 2015 and the "Career Startup 2016" Education Fair set for 22-24 January 2016 at the Dresden Fair.

On June 6, 2014, the German Watch Museum Glashutte opened its new special exhibition, "The Glashutte Cottage Industry: A flourishing Supply System". One of the objects in this exhibition has proved to be a particularly fascinating attraction for visitors: the guilloche machine from 1898 is representative of the professional group of turners who were once resident in Glashutte. With the help of the machine they decorated cases, dials and engine parts, most often with geometric patterns. Visitors to the museum have been equally enthusiastic about the art of hand engraving. Specialists decorated watch cases with ornaments, coats of arms or initials to create individual works of art.

Guilloche decoration and engraving are to be the focus of two live presentations at the German Watch Museum Glashutte. On October 24 and 25, 2014, interested visitors will have the opportunity to observe three skilled craftsmen at work.

The demonstrations will take place from 10am to 5pm in the special exhibition room at the German Watch Museum Glashutte.

Following the devastating tsunami catastrophe of March 2011 in Fukushima, the Free State of Saxony's Prime Minister, Stanislaw Tillich, invited Japanese children from the affected areas to a journey to Saxony for a period of rest and recovery. Pupils and teachers from the Oshika Middle School in the Province of Miyagi accepted this invitation and stayed for ten days in a Saxon youth hostel together with German children. A series of trips introduced the children to Saxony and its sights and gave them an opportunity to share their very personal impressions of the catastrophe with young people from Germany. The latter learned how the Japanese schoolchildren are getting along two years after the disaster, what they are doing to come to terms with their experience and what has changed for them since the incident.
As a company with friendly relations with Japan for many years now, it was very important for Glashutte Original to make it possible for the Japanese schoolchildren to enjoy a period of rest and recuperation in Saxony, and to support the Government of Saxony's project together with other partners. As a result, Glashutte Original Managing Director Gunter Wiegand was pleased to participate in the encounter programme's closing event on August 20, 2013 in the Saxon State Ministry of Finance. Along with the Japanese ambassador Takeshi Nakane and other guests, Mr Wiegand attended a dance performance by the children and a moving presentation of their experience and impressions of the catastrophe. With their performance the children thanked their hosts for the invitation to the Free State of Saxony and for the warm reception they received.
