  • Chopard - Chronometrie Ferdinand Berthoud

Chronometrie Ferdinand Berthoud was born of the initiative of Chopard's co-president Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, who acquired the name in 2006. This move was driven by a determination to give a new lease on life to an impressive heritage, by launching a creative new brand of exceptional timepieces crafted in highly limited series in tribute to the master horologist and thus restoring his name to its former glory. Chopard Group is thereby laying a new milestone in its watchmaking development and further reinforcing its presence in Fleurier, in the Val-de-Travers region of Canton Neuchâtel - Switzerland, where the Chronometrie Ferdinand Berthoud company is established.

Born in 1727 in the Val-de-Travers - Switzerland, Ferdinand Berthoud was granted the title of "Master Clockmaker" in Paris in 1753. This exceptional horologist and tireless researcher who served as "Horloger-Mecanicien du Roi et de la Marine" - Horologist-Mechanic by appointment to the King and the Navy - left behind him an exceptionally broad body of work, notably in the field of marine chronometers.

While the Chronometrie Ferdinand Berthoud is part of the Chopard Group, the development, design and production of Ferdinand Berthoud watches stem from a separate, autonomous and dedicated creative process. To guarantee this exclusivity and this independence, specific watchmakers have been hired in order to develop the original calibres and exteriors of these incomparable timepieces.

As the first step of its renewal, Chronometrie Ferdinand Berthoud presents an exclusive timepiece inspired by the marine clocks developed by the famous watchmaker, the Chronometre Ferdinand Berthoud FB 1.

  • Chopard - An interview with Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, CEO

On this misty November morning, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele arrives on foot from his house. The man likes arranging to meet in this little hotel between Geneva and Fleurier. Simple geographical chance? Far from it: Chopard has a foot in both. In Fleurier, the Manufacture designs and produces its Manufacture timepieces, the famous L.U.C watches, as well as those that it assembles on its site at Fleurier Ebauches. In Geneva, Chopard assembles the models that will receive the precious Poinçon de Geneve quality hallmark. Today, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele takes stock of the Manufacture that he has been heading for nearly 30 years. One by one, he talks freely about his ranges, trends and watchmaking ecology.

    Constant but increasingly independent production
"We have two sites, with two very different, albeit complementary approaches. This year, Chopard will produce around 80,000 watches, with about half of them driven by mechanical movements. That's a good balance, but it does not hold by segment, with a client base that is 65% feminine. Nevertheless, I can sense a slight shift: I think that we will soon reach a 60/40 ratio. As regards our L.U.C watches, we produce around 4,000 a year and I don't want to increase that. And in terms of models bearing the Poinçon de Geneve quality hallmark, their number does not exceed 800 a year."

    Sights set on 2016
"In 2016, we will launch a major, complicated piece, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the L.U.C collection. Between now and then, in 2015, we will introduce a new Mille Miglia, notably a model with an in-house movement. As regards materials, we are keeping titanium and ceramic for high frequency. It doesn't seem relevant to me anywhere else. The question of the pocket watch remains… we made one in 2010 and again in 2014 but I don't see this as a long-term trend."

    Multiple certifications
"We are currently dealing with three certifications: the Fleurier Quality Foundation certification, which incorporates submission to the COSC, as well as the Poinçon de Geneve quality hallmark. In ten years, we have earned Fleurier Quality Foundation certification for 1,000 watches. That makes us the biggest contributor to this label. We have learnt a lot; it is very stringent, much more so than the others, with real wearer tests. Models with all three certifications are rare and we have so far only produced 100 such watches, two years ago."

    Fairmined, a longterm project
"Equitable gold is a difficult process, which requires a design and production circuit that is completely separate from the other models. For the time being, not many of us have adopted the Fairmined label. However, I have heard that the initiative is gaining ground. What needs to happen is real pressure from industrialists in order to make things happen, which will in turn force mines to get involved. Some clients are sensitive to this principle and ready to order even at additional cost, which we estimate at between +10 and +15%. As far as we are concerned, we are conducting research with a view to working on a broader scale towards respect for this certification."

The Swiss Made, a complex balance
"Personally, I wanted to increase its level to 70% (currently 60% today, Editor's note). Yes, it is an initiative that I upheld, even travelling to Bern personally to lobby. Nevertheless, I understand the problem for certain industrialists. I have an acquaintance in railroad construction who would have to shut up shop if he was forced to apply this rate. It's complicated."

  • Chopard - Baselworld 2014 : Tradition on the wrist - and motorsport on the mind

It's ladies first for Chopard, with two particularly striking new watches. The name of first tells you what it's all about: Happy Sport Tourbillon Jewellery. The Chopard icon for women combines the best of the brand's jewellery and watchmaking origins in a watch that's a blend of precision and beauty. This timepiece ushers the legendary Happy Sport dynasty into the world of fine watchmaking, thanks to its L.U.C. 02.16-L movement - produced by Chopard Manufacture.

The particular features of the watch include its tourbillon at 6 o'clock and above all its set jewels, spread like a layer of snow across the entire dial. The tourbillon bridge is also set with jewels, as is the bezel - adorned with 36 trapezium diamonds. Meanwhile the crown boasts baguette diamonds and a briolette diamond. Not forgetting of course the emblematic seven floating diamonds twirling around between two sapphire glasses, the hallmark of the Happy Spirit.

This beautiful evening accessory comes in a new 42 mm diameter, making it the largest watch in the collection. Another special feature is its exceptional 9-day power reserve (that's 216 hours!). The timepiece is Geneva Seal certified.

    20 years, 36 mm, 2 tones and 7 diamonds

The second version is the Happy Sport Medium Automatic Two Tone. This is based on the 2013 edition released for the collection's twentieth anniversary, but with two tones - steel and gold. It features all the essential components, including the guilloche silver dial, sapphire back and seven floating diamonds. The timepiece is powered by an automatic movement housed in a discreet 36 mm case.

Dual certification for a family timepiece

For men, Chopard has already offered a sneak preview of its L.U.C. 1963 model, a classic watch that seeks to get back to the basics of watchmaking: good timekeeping, legibility, balanced lines and perfect execution. The 1963 celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Scheufele family at the head of Chopard, with a timeless 44 mm limited edition, boasting twin Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) and Geneva Seal certification.

Monaco - from a single model to a whole collection

Enfin, de l'elegance urbaine a la piste, il n'y a qu'un saut que franchit avec non pas un nouveau modele, mais une collection complete, la Grand Prix de Monaco Historique. Last but not least, it's just one small step from urban elegance to the race track - and that step has now been taken, not just by one new model but with an entire Grand Prix de Monaco Historique collection. It's the manufacture's way of paying tribute to the eponymous Historic Grand Prix that takes place every two years, with the brand bringing out a dedicated new watch for each edition. Henceforth, each model will be part of a long-term collection, of which the Chrono model is the first in the series. The case features a new shape, with tighter, edgier lugs. Its diameter is larger, too: 44.5 mm. The dial has been completely remodelled, with grooving. There's also a whole new styling to match, completely based on black and yellow - making it perfectly legible. And like all self-respecting sports watches, it has a titanium case, echoed in the tang buckle. The movement is also COSC certified.
