The first million dollar Daytona sold in public auction, as auctioned by Christie's in the Aurel Bacs & Pucci Papaleo 'Daytona: Lesson One' auction of November 10, 2013. The 'Oyster Sotto' dial is believed by many to be exceedingly rare, as are Paul Newman's in general in this reference. It is said that these dials were leftover from the pump ref 6239/ 6241/ 6262/ 6264 Rolex Cosmograph and the dial manufactuer (Singer) later added OYSTER - hence the 'RCO' configuration.

The price realized was CHF989,000, which at the time equated to $1,089,186.

This Rolex Daytona watch is gorgeous. Understated, with elegant dazzle and a good heft. Unfortunately, the watchband is huge and not adjustable. An elephant could wear it around its ankle.
