Baume & Mercier - Capeland on the Wrist
It may be that mega-priced, exotic watches get a lot of press in magazines and blogs, but naturally they in no way constitute the majority of the market. Most buyers are looking for something not only at a reasonable cost but also well made and well designed.
The Baume & Mercier Capeland was launched at SIHH 2011 and marked a considerable change in direction for the company. Achingly retro, the high-domed crystal is reminiscent of the original 1950s models and is exactly on par with current trends. This high curve is mirrored by the case back thanks to an aggressively rounded case that is now outfitted with a sapphire crystal window allowing the wearer to see the movement.
The roundness of the steel case tends to make the watch sit slightly proud on your wrist - a state of affairs that may look as if the watch doesn't quite fit, but actually it is extremely comfortable to wear; the curves allow the case to fit a range of wrist sizes easily. I feel sure that this is something that we will see much more of over the next few years from various manufacturers.
Unusually for a Baume & Mercier watch, the dial doesn't display the usual phi symbol indicative of the brand's logo. Instead it boasts tachymeter and telemeter scales and a date at the 5 o'clock position. The dial is busy, but readability remains good and the blued steel Breguet-style hands contrast nicely with the off-white dial.
In daily wear the watch is a delight; weighty but not heavy. The fit can be a bit tight under a shirt cuff, so one must bear that in mind and be careful not to bang it into anything in the first few days. The padded black alligator strap has classy contrasting white stitching and is a bit narrower than usual, which helps with flexibility. Initially I found it difficult to find a good fit but, happily, after a couple of days it relaxed nicely.
The chronograph functions operate cleanly with a good solid "click," the flyback was a bit stiff, but I suspect that will also ease up a bit after time. Certainly, most people will not use it to measure speed but the added function is nice to have at such a reasonable price point.
This great watch is stylish, has clean lines and a reserved presence that draws plenty of positive comments when spotted on one's wrist. In terms of value for money it's hard to beat all this functionality at 7,100 Swiss francs in stainless steel. If you are looking for something in updated retro style and desire a beautifully made watch, the Baume & Mercier Capeland won't disappoint.
