  • SIHH 2015 - Highlights from day 1

    Hear what you see
We hit a horological high very early in the day with the presentation of the new A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk Minute Repeater, which is designed around the principle that you hear what you see. Since the digital time display jumps instantaneously, but the striking mechanism can take up to 20 seconds to strike out the time, A. Lange & Söhne decided to delay the jumping of the discs in the event that the pusher to operate the minute-repeater function (which consumes less energy than a conventional slider) is actuated shortly before the discs are due to change. So you always hear the time that is displayed on the dial. Other distinguishing features of this new piece are the non-circular shape of the gongs, the fact that the hammers strike the decimal time (to correspond with the decimal display on the dial) rather than the traditional quarter-hour repetition, that they do so in an inward rather than outward direction and that a new mechanism deactivates the striking-work if there are less than 12 hours of power reserve remaining - one of six different patents registered with this new model.

Read more about the new A. Lange & Söhne models on Wednesday here on WorldTempus.

    British bling
Backes & Strauss are going all-out to capitalize on their British heritage. Famous London names are used for timepieces that showcase the very best in precious stones, as evidenced by the new Piccadilly Royal Blue model, which is set with 245 diamonds in 10 different cuts for a total of 37.6 carats. Versions using coloured stones will follow soon thanks the cooperation between Backes & Strauss and Gemfields. My patriotic heart started beating a little faster, however, at the sight of the special gem-set version of the Berkley watch, with its Union Flag stone setting.

New base movements, new manufacture movements and new Portuguese models from Schaffhausen
IWC has a busy couple of years ahead as it prepares to open an entirely new manufacturing facility in Merishausen, on the outskirts of Schaffhausen. Three new movements will be produced at the factory: two base calibres (the 42000 and 69000) and a new 52000 manufacture calibre, all presented at today for the first time. But the focus for 2015 is on the 75th anniversary of the Portuguese collection, which has been entirely revamped with everything from a hand-wound eight-day model right up to a with a minute repeater and perpetual calendar.
Read more about the new base movements from IWC tomorrow on WorldTempus.

    Panerai presents CarbotechTM
The Florentine brand focuses on the Submersible derivatives in its collection this year with versions in titanium and a new material called CarbotechTM. This is a fusion of single-ply carbon fibre and layers of the high-end polymer PEEK (Polyether Ether Ketone), which binds the composite material, making it even ber and more durable. The value of a prized mechanical movement is seen in the new limited edition Mare Nostrum model, featuring the brand's OP XXV calibre, which is based on the Minerva 1322 base (see title image above). At a price of 37,700 euros with a titanium case, the added value from the movement is considerable, particularly compared with Radiomir 1940 and Luminor 1950 models presented with a new equation of time movement. These complicated models can be yours, in steel, for less than half the price.

  • Panerai - New partner

Officine Panerai traces its origins back to 1860 when Giovanni Panerai opened a watchmaker's shop in Florence and became a supplier of precision instruments, such as depth gauges and wristwatches, to the Italian Navy. Today, Officine Panerai's Radiomir and Luminor collections still use the b identity of the original military models.
Radiomir is named after a radium-based powder developped by the company to improve underwater and low-light time display.

The brand, which opened a production facility in Neuchâtel in 2002 where the in-house movements are produced, belongs to the Richemont Group.

  • Panerai - Luminor Submersible 1950 Amagnetic 3 Days Automatic Titanio

The creative energy of Officine Panerai's Workshop of Ideas is demonstrated in the Luminor Submersible 1950 Amagnetic 3 Days Automatic Titanio, the new model which is a novel synthesis of the strict respect for traditional values and authenticity of the Panerai brand, and the continuous search for technically advanced solutions.

    Remarkable resistance to magnetic fields
For Panerai, innovation is above all about functionality, and in the Luminor Submersible 1950 Amagnetic 3 Days Automatic Titanio it is seen in its special case construction which ensures a remarkable degree of resistance to magnetic fields: 40,000 A/m (ampere per metre), a limit more than eight times greater than the value specified by the international standards of the Normes de l'Industrie Horlogere Suisse (NIHS 90-10). Such a high limit is achieved by the use of a special internal case made of soft iron of the highest purity, which encloses and isolates the movement, forming a Faraday cage that diverts the flow of magnetic fields. The soft iron case is immediately beneath the dial, which is made of the same material.

This case structure is useful not only in extreme environmental situations but also in daily life, in that watches are often exposed to magnetic fields generated by electric charges and currents emanating from objects in common use, such as household appliances, computers and cell phones. Such magnetic fields can noticeably alter the rate of the watch and even stop the movement: a possibility that is virtually non-existent in the new Luminor Submersible 1950 Amagnetic 3 Days Automatic Titanio.

    New ceramic and titanium bezel
The soft iron internal case of the Luminor Submersible 1950 Amagnetic 3 Days Automatic Titanio is contained within a classic Luminor Submersible case of brushed titanium, fitted with the lever bridge which locks the winding crown and thus helps in achieving water-resistance to a depth of 300 metres. The design of the watch includes a feature which is completely new in Panerai watches: applied to the rotating titanium bezel, inspired by that of the models made by Panerai for the Egyptian Navy in the 1950s, is a disc of opaque black ceramic, on which the linear and dot-shaped titanium markers are fixed. The bezel rotates only in a clockwise direction, to prevent accidental movement interfering with the measurement of the time of the dive.

    The P.9000 manufacture automatic movement
Behind the quintessential black dial, with its distinctive applied linear hour markers coated with Super-LumiNova®, lies the P.9000 automatic movement, executed entirely by the Officine Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel. With a diameter of 13¾ lignes, 28 jewels, a variable inertia balance and Incabloc® anti-shock protection, the movement is distinguished by the precision of its construction and by the two spring barrels, which are continually wound by an oscillating rotor in both directions, providing a power reserve of three days. The movement also incorporates a convenient system for setting the hour hand which can be moved forward and backward in jumps of exactly one hour, at the same time adjusting the date display accordingly.

Identified by the reference PAM00389, the Luminor Submersible 1950 Amagnetic 3 Days Automatic Titanio is supplied with wide rubber strap fastened by a classic trapezoidal brushed titanium buckle, a spare strap and the tool for replacing it.

  • Panerai - Tuttonero Luminor 1950 3 days GMT Automatic Ceramica - 44 mm

With a Luminor 1950 case and the classic Panerai bracelet in ceramics, Tuttonero is made entirely of matt black ceramic: a watch with extraordinary aesthetic impact, which is faithful to the Panerai identity and constructed using the most advanced technologies in the field of materials.
Matt black is evident in every detail of the Tuttonero: the Luminor 1950 case with a diameter of 44mm, the lever device protecting the winding crown which makes every Luminor unmistakable and the dial which is of sandwich construction. Like the numerals and hour markers, the hands (hour, minute, small seconds and second time zone) are covered with ecru Super-LumiNova®, thus ensuring excellent visibility and legibility even in the dark.

The bracelet too is made entirely of matt black ceramic, the links being formed and finished by the same processes as the case and then attached to a PVD-coated brushed steel buckle. The design of the bracelet is the result of lengthy research aimed at achieving perfect integration with the ceramic case. Each individual link is asymmetrical and has curved surfaces which enhance the soft feel and effective performance of the bracelet.

The ceramic used by Officine Panerai is a synthetic material based on zirconium oxide powder. By means of a complex series of working and finishing processes this acquires a particularly uniform and even appearance combined with a high degree of hardness (up to five times greater than that of stainless steel), as well as being resistant to scratches, corrosive agents and high temperatures. These characteristics have made ceramic one of the materials of choice in the world of haute horlogerie.

The movement of the Tuttonero is the P.9001/B calibre, completely developed and made in the Officine Panerai manufacture. It is an automatic mechanical movement with a power reserve of three days, date, second time zone, zero reset seconds hand and power reserve indication on the movement, visible through the sapphire crystal on the back. The movement has undergone a blackening process to give the watch a completely black appearance, as indicated by the engraved inscription "TUTTONERO" on the back. The Tuttonero - Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT Automatic Ceramica (PAM00438) is waterresistant to 100 metres and is part of the Contemporary Collection.

  • Panerai - New iPad Application

The "Panerai Catalogue" is organised according to the classification of Officine Panerai watches, which are subdivided into four collections: Historic, the models driven by hand-wound calibres; Contemporary, the models with automatic movements; Specialities, the watches that express the highest level of technical excellence of Panerai production; Special Editions, the limited edition timepieces, which embody the values that are deeply rooted in the history of Panerai, namely rarity, exclusivity, authenticity and simplicity. Each watch from the different collections is illustrated with images and detailed technical information.

A specific section of the Panerai Catalogue application is devoted to calibres developed in-house by Officine Panerai at its manufactory in Neuchâtel. The technical features and functions of each of the ten calibres are illustrated through images, videos and detailed information, and each one can be instantly associated with all the models it powers.

Panerai Magazine is the second application developed by Officine Panerai specifically for the iPad, following the Panerai Magazine dedicated to 2011 news and novelties. It is available in English and can be downloaded free from the link:
