  • Eterna - New Vice-President Marketing & Sales

Bruno Jufer grew up in Grenchen, as son of a watchmaker, and inherited his father's passion for the craft at a young age. Sport played a major role in his youth as he was a member of the Swiss university ski team. He acquired his first experience of the watchmaking industry in the sports sponsorship department at Tissot while studying Economics at the University of Bern. He subsequently held positions as Director of Marketing & Sales with a number of brands. Notable achievements here included his active role in the international repositioning of Maurice Lacroix, the establishment of a distribution network for Jaquet Droz and global development of Carl F. Bucherer, where he also held the position of Vice-President. Over the past three years as CEO with Antoine Martin, he held overall responsibility for developing and establishing the brand.

As Bruno Jufer explains: "I was born in Grenchen and my aim now is to restore Eterna to its former glory and see it recognized as a genuine 'manufacture' - a watchmaking company that designs, develops and produces its own movements. My twenty years of experience in the watch industry and the intensive discussions I held with Mr. Hon, Chairman, and Mr. Shang, CEO of the China Haidian Group, persuaded me to take up this challenge."

  • Maurice Lacroix - Masterpiece Roue Carree Seconde Pink Gold

The acclaim of the public and connoisseurs reserved for the now famous square wheel has led the range to be extended towards a level of ultimate refinement. In 2010, Maurice Lacroix revolutionized the mechanics of time by designing a square gear wheel -a first in watchmaking history which, beyond its aesthetic value, inaugurated a new way of charting the onward march of time. In 2011, the Maurice Lacroix square wheel offered new angle on time's course with its focus on the seconds hand. This year, the Masterpiece Roue Carree Seconde has been adorned with pink gold in order to highlight the exclusivity of its display mechanism.

Who can tear their eyes away from this right-angled wheel in perpetual motion? No easy task; as the mechanism is completely captivating. Fashioned in pink gold, like all the time markers, it is set against the backdrop of a brown-black bottom plate. The striking contrast accentuates the hypnotic effect of its angular journey and the geometrical interplay of its lines and curves. The small seconds display comes to life before our eyes with the lively and rhythmic pace of the perforated square wheel, itself driven by a second clover-shaped wheel. With corners and edges that fit together as precisely as their circular counterparts, the two gears rotate continuously to produce a highly dynamic visual effect and remind us that time never varies in its onward journey.
The hours, minutes and power reserve are engraved directly on the plate of the movement and worked in gold. The 46 mm diameter steel case affords time a generous arena in which to express itself with characteristic boldness. The alternating satin and polished finishes highlight the forms. A large sapphire crystal case back reveals the mechanical ML156 movement, decorated with Grand Colimaçon in the purest Swiss watchmaking tradition.
Dedicated to excellence, the new Masterpiece Roue Carree Seconde Gold embodies the very spirit of the collection. A spirit in which engineering and aesthetics combine forces to push back the boundaries of design. Resolutely masculine and an undeniably expert piece of watchmaking, this new timepiece is highly refined while confirming the brand's expertise. It epitomizes watchmaking sophistication and affirms the total mastery of Maurice Lacroix in the arts of mechanical display beyond question.
Designed by engineer watchmaker Michel Vermot in collaboration with the Haute Ecole Arc du Locle, the square wheel mechanism took years of development. By definition, the gears of the non-circular gear wheels cannot be regular. The principal challenge was therefore to determine the shape of their teeth, in order to guarantee constant power transmission. The wheels were made using LiGA technology, a revolutionary process combining the techniques of photolithography and electroforming to produce microcomponents of high precision and finesse, unmatched by traditional machining methods.
Engineer watchmaker Michel Vermot taught for 20 years at the Haute Ecole Arc, located in Le Locle (Switzerland). A specialist in mechanical and electronic watchmaking, he managed many industrial projects at HEArc. He now runs the Movement Development Department at Maurice Lacroix.

  • Martin Braun - Reboot for Martin Braun

    WORLDTEMPUS - 8 February 2011
The watch world has been talking about it for a while, and glimpses seen on various wrists at GTE in January made it clear that collectors would soon be graced with a new line of watches. While their maker is familiar to collectors, the look and feel of these new masterpieces will not be.
Gone are the astronomical developments that sealed Martin Braun's reputation as an innovative movement designer. It should come as no surprise that Braun's new horological offerings will include unprecedented technical elements, particularly in the debut timepiece that will be the star of the show at Baselworld. This perpetual calendar adds a new twist to an old theme. Its manually wound movement featuring an integrated perpetual calendar (not a module) holds power for six full days, and its clearly legible large date is unusually positioned. The entirety of the design harmonizes well with the new movement—so well in fact that the waiting watch world may be well inclined to forget its need for back-to-basic, retro-styled looks that the major brands are currently pushing.
    Professionals
Braun's new marque—in addition to its alter ego, movement manufacturer MHO—was founded with the financial backing of Swiss entrepreneur Antoine Meier. Soon thereafter Braun, who says, "We aim to go beyond existing boundaries and to give unconventional ideas a chance," hired an experienced industry executive to run the new venture.
Bruno Jufer, previously employed with Maurice Lacroix, Jaquet Droz, and Zenith, was most recently a member of Carl F. Bucherer's executive management. He describes his new place of employment as "a benchmark for innovative technology in movement construction and unique watch design." These are no light comments coming from a man of his experience, with Braun quickly adding that Antoine Martin—a name that is easily pronounced in every language and chosen to represent its two founding visionaries—was born under Jufer's professional tutelage.
No predefined routes are scheduled to be followed by this new company, which should keep collectors on their toes. Stay tuned to Worldtempus for the entire story as it unfolds.
