  • Only Watch 2013 - On The Road

    From 30 August to 28 September 2013, the dates set for the grand auction at Monaco's Hôtel Hermitage, the 33 unique watches will be completing their very own world tour before succumbing to the bidding frenzy. These exceptional pieces will thus set out to capture the hearts of international collectors all over the planet in their own bid to promote the fight against muscular dystrophy. Between 25 and 28 September, they will be back in Monaco as part of the Monaco Yacht Show, the world's premier showcase for super yachts. They will then be visible in the Salle Belle Epoque in an exhibition held under the High Patronage de H.R.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco. Among the visitors, often identified by the brands themselves or the Antiquorum auction house, are Collectors and informed amateurs, who include some of the most important in the world.
    A feminine presence
    This year, the Only Watch exhibition is marked by a marked feminine presence. Of the thirty or so manufactures united by this biennial adventure, 6 have chosen to design and craft a unique watch intended for ladies. Will these models succeed in winning the hearts of the ceremony-goers? One thing is certain, they will all illustrate one of the thriving trends in current watchmaking, namely the growing fascination among a feminine clientele for watch complications, due to their complex mechanisms or discreet adornments. This phenomenon points to another widespread trend, the return to less ostentatious dimensions. Watch diameters of less than 40 mm are now being seen, as well as a tendency towards a neo-vintage flashback to the original iconic lines of former years when the standards of classic watchmaking were being set.
      

    100% of funds raised to be donated

    The record 4 million Euros raised at the 2011 are yet to be beaten! As in past editions of Only Watch, the sums collected at this 5th edition will be donated in their entirety to the fight against muscular dystrophy, mainly to finance research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a rare neuromuscular auto-immune disease, and an extremely disabling disorder that affects one in 3,500 boys, i.e. approximately 250,000 children, teenagers and young adults around the world. 

    'The funds raised by Only Watch enabled the Monaco Association against muscular dystrophy to finance more than a dozen teams around the world working on approaches to cell therapy, gene therapy and the exon jump. The task ahead is still immense', concedes the highly motivated and appreciative Luis Garcia, research director at the CNRS and scientific co-ordinator of ICE, a concerted international research programme on Duchenne muscular dystrophy. In this very human adventure, where the notion of time is vital in saving lives, Only Watch celebrates these tremendous efforts every two years by uniting the key Swiss watchmaking workshops at a very worthwhile auction event with a high media profile.

  • Maurice Lacroix - DKSH strengthens its Luxury business



    DKSH continues its focused strategic growth course for its Luxury & Lifestyle business. Following their acquisition in February 2010 of Hagemeyer-Cosa Liebermann, a Swiss company with a long tradition in the marketing and sales of Luxury & Lifestyle products, DKSH has now further strengthened its luxury goods activities through two significant investments. On the one hand, DKSH has taken a majority shareholding in Maurice Lacroix. Located in Saignelegier and Zurich, the renowned watchmaker has 200 employees and generates sales of CHF 70 million. DKSH has already held exclusive marketing and distribution rights to Maurice Lacroix products in Asia since 2008. Secondly, DKSH has established a joint venture with Zino Davidoff AG for the sales a

    nd marketing of luxury timepieces, leather goods, and accessories throughout Asia. With these investments, DKSH's comprehensive product offering has been enhanced by products from two high-quality brands.
    This strategic collaboration, focusing sharply on market expansion in Asia as well as optimally satisfying demand from the rapidly emerging Asian middle class is underpinned by Zino Davidoff AG taking a shareholding in Maurice Lacroix.
    Remaining as the third shareholder is Desco von Schulthess, which like Zino Davidoff are presently board of directors' members of the Maurice Lacroix Holding. Dr. Peter Brunner, President of Desco von Schulthess said, "Relinquishing the majority shareholding as well as handing over the management and strategic positioning of Maurice Lacroix to DKSH was a planned, long-term and logical step in my succession solution. This began with DKSH's acquisition of Desco's Asia and the financial participation of DKSH in Maurice Lacroix in 2008. All three partners involved are proud of this Swiss solution."


    For Maurice Lacroix, this new ownership structure opens up promising perspectives. Martin Bachmann, CEO, explained, "In addition to the even ber focus on market growth in Asia, this new constellation offers further growth and synergy potentials for continued global expansion within the framework of a successful brand strategy."

Moreover, through acquiring the controlling stake in Maurice Lacroix, DKSH is conscientiously implementing its growth strategy in its own brands for selected business segments.

    Founded and directed by Efim Khankin, Universal Watch Repair in Birmingham, Michigan, is a true family affair. Efim's wife Luda heads up the financial department, while sons Boris and Leonid are each in charge of important aspects of the company: Boris primarily heads the technical service department, while Leonid has the Herculean task of being the driving force behind the Ernst Benz Swiss watch brand that the Khankins acquired in 2005. "Ernst Benz is not like a job for me," Leonid says with a great big smile. "It's like a dream come true."


    From its beginnings with six customers in the 1970s, Universal Watch Repair now proudly counts more than 3,000 accounts for the restoration and repair of timekeeping treasures, not including the twenty-two manufacturers for which it is the official U.S. service center such as Graham, Arnold & Son, Perrelet and Maurice Lacroix. These statistics speak for themselves: the Khankin family clearly understands giving good service. Universal Watch Repair's workshop can truly repair any mechanical or quartz pocket or wristwatch, whether modern or vintage.     Universal Watch Repair's sixteen watchmakers sit at standard watchmaking benches located right next to large glass windows providing natural light to the busy workshop. The watchmakers are of various nationalities, including American. Most of them have been trained either at well-known watchmaking schools or at Metro Detroit's own Warren Consolidated School's horology program, the only high-school watchmaking program in North America and one of only ten watchmaking schools in the U.S.
